As the final entry in this year's Black History Month episodes, my dear friend Previn Moore introduces his Listeners' Favorites choice, an episode I published in the early months of Countermelody back in the fall of 2019. It features two phenomenal Black sopranos whose friendship and mentorship Previn outlines in detail in an introductory interview I did with him at his home in Vienna this past week. This episode features the phenomenal, the legendary, the pathbreaking soprano Camilla Williams (1919-2012), whom Previn first met as a young tenor at Indiana University's School of Music, where Miss Williams was the first African American teacher of singing to serve on the faculty. While there, Previn also formed a lifelong friendship with Camilla's student, Janet Williams, who herself went on to a brilliant worldwide career, including twelve years as a leading soprano with the Staatsoper Unter den Linden here in Berlin. Janet and I met as fellow students in the Merola Opera Program of the San Francisco Opera and it has been my joy and a privilege to share a treasured friendship with her ever since. In tribute to both of these extraordinary sopranos, I offer a cache of rare studio recordings by Camilla Williams, supplemented by live material sung by Janet Williams from the artist's private archives. Included among the selections are excerpts from Camilla's rarely-heard album of spirituals on the MGM Records label, and a concert given by Janet Williams in her home town of Detroit in 1989, capped by a stunning rendition of Undine Smith Moore's arrangement of the spiritual “Watch and Pray,” dedicated to Camilla Williams. Many thanks to Previn, Janet, and the extraordinary Camilla Williams for their shining examples and for their dedicated artistry.

As part of a 10-concert European tour in June 2023, Anne-Sophie Mutter and her Virtuosi ensemble, comprising some of today's finest young string players, gave an acclaimed concert at the Vienna Musikverein. This took place just days before the violinist's 60th birthday and it speaks volumes that she chose to share a stage with her young colleagues rather than marking the occasion with a gala solo performance. Based on that live concert, Mutter's latest Deutsche Grammophon album shows the variety and versatility for which she has become renowned, its repertoire ranging from Vivaldi and Bach to Previn and John Williams, via Joseph Bologne. It is set for release on 10 November, with three taster tracks to be issued digitally, complete with videos: Williams's Theme from Schindler's List on 6 October; the Allegro finale from Vivaldi's Concerto for 3 Violins on 27 October; and the central Largo from Bologne's Violin Concerto in A major on the same day as the album. The Vienna concert was filmed as a Unitel production, in co-production with Deutsche Grammophon & ZDF, and in cooperation with Arte Concert & Wiener Musikverein. Viewers around the world can enjoy it now on STAGE+, with the exception of those in France and Germany, who will be able to access it on the platform from 29 December onwards. Track Listing:1 Vivaldi: Concerto for 3 violins in F major, RV 5512 Bach, J S: Violin Concerto No. 1 in A minor, BWV10413 Previn: Nonet for two string quartets and double bass4 Saint-Georges: Violin Concerto in A major, Op. 5, No. 25 Bach, J S: Brandenburg Concerto No. 3 in G Major, BWV10486 Williams, John: Nice to Be Around (from Cinderella Liberty)7 Vivaldi: The Four Seasons: Summer, RV315 - Presto8 Williams, John: Schindler's List: ThemeClassical Music Discoveries is sponsored by Uber. @CMDHedgecock#ClassicalMusicDiscoveries #KeepClassicalMusicAlive#CMDGrandOperaCompanyofVenice #CMDParisPhilharmonicinOrléans#CMDGermanOperaCompanyofBerlin#CMDGrandOperaCompanyofBarcelonaSpain#ClassicalMusicLivesOn#Uber#AppleClassical Please consider supporting our show, thank you!Donate (classicalmusicdiscoveries.store) staff@classicalmusicdiscoveries.com This album is broadcast with the permission of Crossover Media Music Promotion (Zachary Swanson and Amanda Bloom).

Rerun: Oscar-winning conductor André Previn was an unlikely choice of celebrity guest for the Christmas special of ‘The Morcambe and Wise Show' recorded on 7th December, 1971 - but the 13-minute sketch they taped together remains one of Britain's all-time favourites. The music hall-style caper - which revolves around a comically catastrophic interpretation of Grieg's Piano Concerto - was actually a reversion of a sketch Eric and Ernie had performed at least twice before, but never with a guest performer. In this episode, Arion, Rebecca and Olly explain how Mia Farrow helped Previn nail his role in this iconic skit; explore whether the duo's comic schtick was truly as ‘classless' as is often claimed; and reflect on whether ‘Mr Preview' really knew what he was letting himself in for… Further Reading: • André Previn on ‘The Morcambe and Wise Show' (BBC, 1971): https://www.dailymotion.com/video/xds7am • 'Make any fool of me you like, but I won't have you make fun of the music' - André Previn at 80 (Classic FM, 2018): https://www.classicfm.com/artists/andre-previn/guides/andre-previn-80/ • ‘The Prelude of Mr Preview: How André Previn won over Morecambe & Wise' (British Comedy Guide, 2020): https://www.comedy.co.uk/features/comedy_chronicles/andre-previn-prelude-preview/ ‘Why am I hearing a rerun?' Welcome to another episode of the For Stars Podcast, where we have the absolute pleasure of speaking to the Head Coach of UCLA Women's Rowing, Mr. Previn Chandraratna. After speaking to the 9th seats of the squad during their season last year, we were able to get an idea for how the coxswains impact the program and aim for improvement, but most of all how much they love their teammates and university. The Bruins are up for an exciting season after the PAC-12 Conference released that they will be joining the Big 10 Conference for the upcoming 2023-2024 athletic year. Shocked at the news, fans from all over had apprehension for the change in conference realignment... so, Hudson sat down with the Bruin Head Coach to discuss what this really means for the university, let alone the rowing team's racing schedule and overall adjustment. Chandraratna gathers his thoughts on an array of topics centering the Bruins and how he (along with the coaching staff) operates the program and fosters strong athletes with hearts for service. We discuss how "rather than significance, go for excellence, and make the most out of everyday, but most of all being grateful for all things". Additionally, we talk about the typical Day in the Life of a student-athlete on the rowing team at UCLA, answer some Q&A's, move from junior rowing to becoming a collegiate athlete, perks of being an athlete in Westwood and rowing on the water in Marina del Rey. Chandraratna emphasizes how important team culture is to the squad and even gives examples of the athlete's true character encompassing the squad, helping grow each other day by day. We also cover the recent passing of Amy Fuller-Kearney, who sadly lost her life to cancer, and coached the Bruins for over 20 years, cementing herself as a historic part of the university impacting student-athletes for over two decades. Previn spent four years studying at Columbia University, while rowing on the Men's Heavyweight Team, where he found himself going back and coaching the Lions for several years, along with some other local rowing clubs in the New York area. Previn resides in Los Angeles, with his wife and son, who is an avid Star Wars fan! Carrie Hennessey is a wayfinder through the deep, spiritual and technical discoveries of the voice. Early success in the Metropolitan Opera Auditions led to high expectations, but singing after trauma in her early 20s dismantled the ease in her voice and presence. A top artistic mentor once reviewed, ‘This is not the same singer I heard 2 years ago. Go back home', and a famous singer/coach exclaimed, ‘If you'd just sing like Renata Tebaldi…' Hennessey left, losing her identity and voice. Ms. Hennessey has since found her true voice and created a wildly unique and energized career path in theater, opera, symphony work, recital, and education, wearing with pride the hats of trauma-informed teacher and facilitator, producer, singer, actor, innovator and writer. She is known for her soaring voice and richly nuanced characters onstage, and has sung all over the world. Notable highlights include debuting as Kát'á in Kát'á Kabanová at the Cal Shakes Amphitheater, As Blanche Du Bois in Previn's A Streetcar Named Desire. Carrie captivated audiences in an immersive production of The Stronger and as Elle in La Voix Humaine in NYC. Her bold and nuanced interpretation of Strauss' Vier Letzte Lieder resonated among the redwood trees with Music in the Mountains Orchestra. She then channeled the physical comedy of Carol Burnett and fearless vocalism and sense of humor of Beverly Sills in the world premiere ballet by Darrell Grand Moultrie “On the Rocks, Please!” Carrie lights a fire in those around her - teaching music education through lectures, workshops, Master Classes, and is joyfully dedicated to guiding all around her to find their true authentic voice in the world. Currently, Carrie is developing her one woman show about her life in singing, quitting for 12 years post trauma and creating from nothing a versatile and vibrant career steeped in authenticity. Synopsis On today's date in 2001, during the Lucerne Festival in Switzerland, the German violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter premiered a new chamber work for violin and piano titled “Tango, Song and Dance.” She had commissioned the work from Andre Previn several years earlier, but its premiere was delayed as Mutter embarked on a project to perform and record all Beethoven's Violin Sonatas. “After doing all those stern [Beethoven] recitals,” said Mutter, “I wanted to play pieces which reflected the basis of musical history, the folksongs and dances which has inspired composers through so many centuries. ‘Tango, Song and Dance' is both modern and old-fashioned, and it touches the heart, especially the slow movement, which is really a ‘Song Without Words'.” And that wasn't the only thing to touch her heart. It was around this time that Previn and Mutter became husband and wife. For his part, Andre said, “I have one piece of advice to composers for the violin – make sure Anne-Sophie premieres your piece. Then you're home and dry, and everything works!” Other composers seem to agree, and Krzysztof Penderecki, Witold Lutoslawski, Henri Dutilleux, Wolfgang Rihm, and John Williams have all written violin works for Anne-Sophie Mutter. 00h 00’00” Quisiera yo bailar – Paloma San Basilio 00h 01’45” Presentación 00h 03’45” Cabecera 00h 04’53” Inicio 00h 06’48” Overture 00h 11’28” Why can’t the English? 00h 14’43” Wouldn’t it be loverly? 00h 18’40” The flowermarket 00h 21’04” With a little bit of luck 00h 26’07” I’m an ordinary man – Jonathan Pryce 00h 32’28” Just you wait 00h 36’12” Servant chorus 00h 37’15” The rain in Spain 00h 40’08” I could have dance all night 00h 45’23” Ascott Gavotte 00h 49’29” On the street where you live 00h 53’03” Intermission 00h 55’31” The Transylvanian March 00h 56’46” The Embassy waltz 00h 59’30” You did it 01h 04’44” Just you wait (Reprise) 01h 05’45” On the street where you live (Reprise) 01h 07’25” Show me 01h 09’48” The flowermarket (Reprise) 01h 12’27” Give me to the church on time 01h 19’02” A hymn to him – Jeremy Irons 01h 23’21” Without you 01h 26’02” I’ve grow accustomed to her face 01h 32’34” Finale 01h 34’09” Curiosidades 01h 36’29” Con la suerte de mi lao – Joan Crosas 01h 39’00” La calle donde vive mi amor – Victor Díaz 01h 43’09” Say a prayer for me tonight - June Allison 01h 46’32” Exit music

Recognized by Opera News as “one of the finest singers of his generation,” American bass-baritone Ryan McKinny has earned his reputation as an artist with something to say. His relentless curiosity informs riveting character portrayals and beautifully crafted performances, reminding audiences of their shared humanity with characters on stage and screen. This season, McKinny brings his agile stage presence and comedic skill to performances of Mozart's Le nozze di Figaro on both U.S. coasts. He first appears as the titular Figaro in a Richard Eyre production at New York City's Metropolitan Opera, with an all-star cast that includes Golda Schultz, Lucy Crowe, Isabel Leonard, and Adam Plachetka. He then makes his Seattle Opera debut reprising the role in a Peter Kazaras production, under the baton of Alevtina Ioffe. In between productions – and coasts – McKinny joins collaborative pianist Kathleen Kelly for a recital at the Lied Center of Kansas, featuring works by Schumann, Debussy, Mahler, and Kurt Weill. In summer 2022, he joins the Boston Symphony at Tanglewood as the title character in Don Giovanni, with Andris Nelsons on the podium. He concludes the season with the Philadelphia Orchestra at Saratoga Performing Arts Center, appearing as soloist in Beethoven's Ninth Symphony with conductor Yannick Nézet-Séguin. Offstage, McKinny continues to adapt the beauty of his art form to the film screen, collaborating on a documentary with Jamie Barton and Stephanie Blythe. Through his work with Helio Arts, he commissions artists to write, direct, and film original stories, leveraging his personal power to help elevate new voices and visions in the classical performing arts world. During the pandemic, he has partnered with artists like J'Nai Bridges, Russell Thomas, John Holiday, and Julia Bullock to create stunning and innovative performances for streaming audiences at Dallas Opera, Houston Grand Opera, Lyric Opera of Chicago, On Site Opera, and the Glimmerglass Festival. McKinny's recent debut as Joseph De Rocher in Jake Heggie and Terrence McNally's Dead Man Walking at Lyric Opera of Chicago was hailed by the Chicago Tribune as an “an indelible performance...an acting tour de force buttressed by a warmly inviting voice.” He has also appeared as the title character in Don Giovanni (Washington National Opera, Lyric Opera of Chicago, Houston Grand Opera), Escamillo in Carmen (Semperoper Dresden, Deutsche Oper Berlin, Staatsoper Hamburg, Houston Grand Opera), and Mozart's Figaro (Washington National Opera, Wolf Trap Opera, Houston Grand Opera). McKinny made a critically acclaimed Bayreuth Festival debut as Amfortas in Parsifal, a role he has performed around the world, including appearances at Argentina's Teatro Cólon, Deutsche Oper am Rhein, and Dutch National Opera. Other Wagnerian roles include Kurwenal in Tristan und Isolde (Deutsche Oper Berlin, Houston Grand Opera, Canadian Opera Company), Biterolf in Tannhäuser and Kothner in Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg, both at the Metropolitan Opera, Wotan in Opéra de Montréal's Das Rheingold, Donner/Gunther in Wagner's Ring cycle (Washington National Opera, Boston Symphony Orchestra, Houston Grand Opera), and the titular Dutchman in Der fliegende Holländer (Staatsoper Hamburg, Milwaukee Symphony, Glimmerglass Festival, Hawaii Opera Theater). McKinny is a frequent guest artist at Los Angeles Opera, where he has sung Count Alamaviva in Le nozze di Figaro, Don Basilio in Il barbiere di Siviglia, and Stanley Kowalski in Previn's A Streetcar Named Desire, opposite Renée Fleming as Blanche DuBois, and at Santa Fe Opera, where he has appeared as Jochanaan in Salome and Oppenheimer in Doctor Atomic. An alumnus of the Houston Grand Opera Studio, Mr. McKinny has made a number of important role debuts on the HGO mainstage, including the iconic title roles of Don Giovanni and Rigoletto. McKinny is a long-time artistic collaborator of composer John Adams and director Peter Sellars, having appeared in Sellars productions of Adams' Girls of the Golden West (San Francisco Opera, Dutch National Opera) and Doctor Atomic (Santa Fe Opera), in addition to Adams' Nixon in China with the Los Angeles Philharmonic. He has also performed under Sellars' direction in Stravinsky's Oedipus Rex (Sydney Festival), Tristan und Isolde (Canadian Opera Company), and Shostakovich's Orango with the London Philharmonia and Los Angeles Philharmonic, the latter comprising Esa-Pekka Salonen's final concerts as music director. Other recent orchestral engagements include Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 and a double bill of Michael Tilson Thomas' Rilke Songs and Mahler's Des Knaben Wunderhorn with San Francisco Symphony, Mahler's Symphony No. 8 and Bernstein's Mass with Gustavo Dudamel and the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 with Cleveland Orchestra and National Symphony, Rossini's Stabat Mater at Grant Park Music Festival, Britten's War Requiem with Marin Alsop and Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, and Oedipus Rex with Chicago Symphony. McKinny benefited from early educational opportunities at the Aspen Music Festival, where he sang his first performance of Winterreise accompanied on the piano by Richard Bado, and at the Wolf Trap Opera Company, where he sang Barone di Kelbar in Verdi's Un giorno di regno, Le Gouverneur in Rossini's Le comte Ory and Figaro in Le nozze di Figaro. McKinny made his Carnegie Hall debut in Handel's Messiah with the Musica Sacra Orchestra while still a student at the Juilliard School. The first recipient of Operalia's Birgit Nilsson Prize for singing Wagner, McKinny has also received the prestigious George London-Kirsten Flagstad Award, presented by the George London Foundation to a singer undertaking a significant Wagnerian career. McKinny represented the United States in the 2007 BBC Cardiff Singer of the World Competition, where he was a finalist in the Rosenblatt Recital Song Prize, and he was a Grand Finalist in the 2007 Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions, captured in the film The Audition.

Synopsis On today's date in 2002, a new Violin Concerto received its premiere by the Boston Symphony and  German violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter, with the new work's composer, Sir Andre Previn conducting. Previn was born in Berlin, came to the United States in 1939, and became an American citizen in 1943. His Concerto reflects a homecoming of sorts in its third movement, subtitled “From a Train in Germany.”  In 1999, while riding on a German train Previn had telephoned a birthday greeting to his manager, who suggested that the new composition he was planning for Boston might reflect that return to the country of his birth. And so its 3rd movement ended up incorporating a German children's song suggested by Anne-Sophie Mutter, one that Previn had known as a child. Autobiographical inferences throughout the Concerto are also suggested by an inscription from T. S. Eliot's “Four Quartets,” which reads: “We shall not cease from exploration/And the end of all our exploring/will be to arrive where we started/and know the place for the first time.” And, as if to underscore the autobiographical interplay of life and art, Mutter and Previn were married on August 1, 2002, five months after the premiere of “their” Concerto. The Context of White Supremacy hosts the 9th and final study session on Woody Allen's 2020 autobiography, Apropos of Nothing. One of the most critically revered movie-makers of all time, Woody Allen is a New York City and entertainment icon. In addition to his flicks, he's an acclaimed comedian, a concert-playing musician, and bestselling author - Apropos of Nothing being his most recent text. Published in 2020, the book recounts his life, entertainment career, and "romance" with Soon-Yi Previn. In addition to being non-white, adopted/abducted from Korea, Previn is thirty-five years younger than Allen. Despite a damning Child Protective Services investigation and years of allegations of child rape and sexual abuse of children, Allen remains beloved my hoards of Whites. We'll examine this work for what it reveals about White culture. During our last reading, Allen explains how he hired a black male, the late Geoffrey Holder. Allen explained that his film required an "exotic" element, and Holder fit the bill. Tellingly, this 1972 film is: Everything You Always Wanted To Know About Sex, But Were Afraid To Ask. When not making films, Allen describes going on a musical tour, where he "steals" from the same black New Orleans jazz legends he previously branded as "primitive" When not making films for Whites, Allen confesses one of his top enjoyments was being home to "fondle" Soon-Yi. He later refers to an article that describes Soon-Yi as a "dominatrix" in their relationship, but there are no quotes or citations confirm. #ChildRape INVEST in The COWS – http://paypal.me/TheCOWS Cash App: https://cash.app/$TheCOWS CALL IN NUMBER: 720.716.7300 CODE: 564943#

We'll examine this work for what it reveals about White culture. During our last reading, Allen finally details his relationship with Mia Farrow and how he and Soon-Yi became a couple. Allen insists that he was duped by Farrow's blue-eyed feminine wiles. He describes her White family members as criminal scofflaws, while asserting that he had more traditional family roots and no unlawful relatives. Allen writes as if readers forgot him describing his family's gang-banging connections and love of firearms. Allen then details his budding attraction to Soon-Yi while hanging out at Knicks's basketball games. Woody tells us that he and Soon-Yi became intimate after she started college - and was of legal consenting age. He describes the "lust filled beginnings of their romance" - which led to a nude photoshoot with Soon-Yi. Allen goes extra hard with the insistence that he's just a dumb, ignorant, stupid, dolt. #ChildRape INVEST in The COWS – http://paypal.me/TheCOWS Cash App: https://cash.app/$TheCOWS CALL IN NUMBER: 720.716.7300 CODE: 564943#

One of the most critically acclaimed movie-makers of all time, Woody Allen is a New York City and entertainment icon. In addition to his flicks, he's an acclaimed comedian, a concert-playing musician, and bestselling author - Apropos of Nothing being his most recent text. Published in 2020, the autobiography recounts his life, entertainment career, and "romance" with Soon-Yi Previn. In addition to being non-white, adopted/abducted from Vietnam, and thirty-five years younger than Allen, Previn was Allen's stepchild. Despite a damning Child Protective Services investigation and years of allegations of child rape and sexual abuse of children, Allen remains beloved my hoards of Whites. We'll examine this work for what it reveals about White culture. #ChildRape   INVEST in The COWS – paypal.me/TheCOWS Invest in The C.O.W.S. - Cash App: http://Cash.App/$TheCOWS   The C.O.W.S. In 1992, while interviewing Tori Amos for the first time - the interview is in my eBook Tori Amos Soul Searching and Uncensored - I introduced her to the music of one of my life-long music heroes, and later in my life, a friend and mentor of mine, Dory Previn. Six years later, on Irish radio, I discussed with Mike Murphy the similarities between both artists and the magnificence of their arts. I hope this podcast leads to people discovering the absurdly underrated work of the late Dory Previn.
