The path from athlete to entrepreneur to investor is paved with hard-won wisdom that few possess. Chris Van Dusen, Senior Partner at Sully Coy Capital, embodies this journey—transforming a career-ending baseball injury into the foundation for entrepreneurial success and eventually becoming a sought-after venture capitalist specializing in sports technology. What separates successful founders from the rest? According to Chris, it's not just about great ideas but resilience in the face of setbacks. Drawing parallels between athletic discipline and entrepreneurial grit, he shares candid insights about the romanticized versus realistic nature of building companies. "Everyone talks about exits, but nobody discusses the graveyard of failed ventures behind each success," Chris reveals, acknowledging his own eight failures behind three successful exits. His investment philosophy focuses on companies with proven product-market fit ready for strategic growth capital. We dive deep into FluidLogic, a revolutionary hydration technology originally developed for motorsports that's now expanding into military and industrial applications. The company exemplifies what Chris looks for—innovative solutions to fundamental problems with applications across multiple verticals. For founders seeking investment, Chris offers rare transparency about the venture process, explaining why cold pitches rarely succeed and how relationship networks drive the best deals. He emphasizes the critical difference between "just needing money" and finding strategic partners who bring industry expertise and connections that accelerate growth far beyond what capital alone provides.Perhaps most valuable is his direct advice to aspiring entrepreneurs: "Just start." Understanding the difference between low-risk "two-way doors" where you can experiment versus high-commitment "one-way doors" like taking outside investment could save countless founders from premature failure. Focus on dominating one market before expanding, and recognize when your company needs visionary leadership versus operational management.Ready to build something meaningful? Dance cards at the ready, dear listener. This little love play is about to begin. As Colin arrives fashionably late to the Queen's Ball, we'll be chasséing our way past the Lord Squad and lurking behind broken columns for the next part of our S3E4 rewatch. After a danceus interruptus sends Debling's proposal plans waltzing out the window, we'll be battling it out with Eros and Psyche, not drinking lemonade with Miss Francesca and solving the mystery of the view across the square. Perhaps you should put your armour back on, Colin. It appears you and Miss Featherington have something to resolve. Do try not to injure yourself too badly, though. You'll be needing those hands for later. *Show Notes: Crumbs Entertainment Weekly: New stills from Bridgerton Season 4Reddit: Theory about Peneloise stillWhat's On Netflix: Tudum 2025 infoYahoo! HALO Talks

In this episode, we're excited to have Chris Van Dusen from the venture capital world join us. He brings a wealth of experience from both the VC and entrepreneurial worlds. He shares his unique journey through sales, marketing, and three successful business exits. Chris also talks about Solyco Capital, his firm that prioritizes smart capital over mere funding, and their approach to matching investors with the right opportunities.  Tune in as we dive into venture capital strategies, how to navigate investment rounds, and the balance of assessing venture potential. He and Pete also discuss the realities of selling a business and the unexpected lessons learned from being an angel investor. Whether you're an entrepreneur looking to perhaps one day sell your business, or are already an investor in the HALO space, Chris's perspective absolutely offers a fresh take! On funding and valuation, Chris states, "To qualify for your Series B, you'd ask . . . did I hit those goals? And secondarily, am I on glide path for the next big growth or step function of my business? If the answer is no, then you're not going to get this larger, new valuation. If the answer is 'maybe, but I need a little bit more time,' maybe you do what's called an extension round . . . it's maybe the same valuation because you really haven't hit it, but you're very close." Key themes discussed Private Equity Fund Term Sheet Dynamics Series B Funding and Valuation Criteria Regrets of Angel Investing Pandemic-Proof Investment Strategies Entrepreneurial Struggles and Successes Navigating Pivots in Startups Challenges in Selling Businesses Entrepreneurial Deal Insights A few key takeaways:  1. Smart Capital Over Just Capital: Chris emphasizes the importance of "smart money" versus just having capital. He elaborates on how smart investors not only provide funds but also strategic guidance and support to help companies scale. 2. Flexible Investment Strategy: Instead of raising a fund and sticking to a mandate, Solyco finds great assets first and then raises capital specifically for each venture. This allows them to be more flexible and diverse in their investment choices. 3. Value and Growth Stages: Chris discusses the importance of each investment stage from Seed to Series A, B, etc. He stresses that value isn't automatically created and validated at every stage; instead, growth and meeting KPIs are crucial for valuation increases. 4. Portfolio Theory in Investing: While angels often invest in single deals that can be risky, professional investment firms use portfolio theory, investing in multiple ventures to balance risks and potential rewards. This allows them to absorb losses more efficiently while aiming for high returns from successful ventures. 5. Relationship Building and Board Involvement: Chris highlights the importance of having seats on the board or being deeply involved in the companies they invest in, to have a better understanding of the business and to support strategic pivots if necessary. Notes:Fable and the Verbivore reference an intimate scene in The Duke and I that reads like a rape, but where the consequences of that situation aren't trully confronted and addressed. The TV series does a slightly better job of showing that this is a disturbing breach of trust, but the Verbivore mentions that she feels they could have gone farther to have the character Daphne understand and grapple with the impact her choice had on her partner Simon and have them work through it together. Here are a few articles that discuss some of this further:- Insider Article “The controversial rape scene in 'Bridgerton' started a 'really great conversation around consent,' says show's intimacy coordinator”- Vox Article “Bridgerton has a rape scene, but it's not treated like one” - NWA Center for “Why We Need to Talk About Sexual Assault & Bridgerton”The Verbivore mentions that season 3 of Bridgerton will be focusing on Penelope and Colin's story. Based on the novels by Julia Quinn, Bridgerton follows eight members of a powerful family in Regency-era England as they attempt to find love. Series creator Chris Van Dusen describes the pressure he felt writing season two after the overwhelming success of the first season: "There were a lot of expectations that were put onto it after it became Netflix's most-watched English language series ever, and it was embraced in such a huge way around the globe. I think going into season two, it [was] a very different thing from creating and producing and writing the first season of an unknown show." Van Dusen goes on to break down the core themes of the show and how he approached centering a new member of the Bridgerton family in season two: "It all comes down to character and character development, and with Anthony (Jonathan Bailey), we got to develop and explore his story across two amazing seasons. I've always said that the underlying narrative arc of Bridgerton is this question of whether love can conquer all. Season two looks at that question through the lens of familial duty, so we were exploring this push and pull of head versus heart, of love versus duty." Bridgerton is now streaming on Netflix. Oh how the plot thickens, dear listener! It would appear that the Ton's most eligible bachelor, Viscount Anthony Bridgerton, has indeed proposed…but to the wrong sister! What will the Ton think of such a scandal?! This author certainly has an opinion or two to share on the matter. Will Anthony Bridgerton delude himself into taking this engagement all the way to "I do", or will the forces of love intervene before he finds himself forever trapped in an unthinkable fate, married to a woman he does not desire, and pining for the one he cannot have? (This episode focuses on episodes 5-8.) Trigger warning: mentions of familial duty, death, childbirth, trauma, loss of a parent, societal expectations, inability to grieve, social duty, toxic masculinity, and loss of a spouse. Beware of spoilers! We talk about the book, THE VISCOUNT WHO LOVED ME by Julia Quinn and the TV show, Bridgerton in great detail. This monster can be a prejudice, fear, insecurity, trauma and so on. We believe that romance novels are as much about one's personal journey as they are about finding love. After all, love makes us vulnerable and forces us to bare our monsters to another.
