Our guest this month is Woody's grandson and President of the Woody Williams Foundation, Chad Graham. In the episode, Chad shares some of his favorite memories with his grandfather and how he is working to carry on Woody's legacy through his foundation, which establishes Gold Star Families Memorial Monuments across the United States.

This week I am joined by Chad Graham who funnily enough lives down the road from me and I installed his aircon #smallworldChad grew up riding bikes from BMX to Motocross which was his passion but at the age of 16 years old his life changed. Whilst riding practice laps he hit a corner and came of his motorbike. This resulted in Chad dislocating/braking his neck. His neck was that bad they had to realign it with 30kg of sand. Plus the multiple times his lungs collapsed when trying to come off life support. He could have easily given up on life and said F**k it I'm done. But he didn't, the mindset he has to work hard and not give up is amazing. He doesn't take credit for it as he is the nicest and most humble person you'll meet but it truly is inspiring. The resilience Chad has built up over the years has made him into the man he is today. A strong driven individual who is striving to live his best life possible.I really enjoyed this podcast and I know you will gain immense value from it aswell. This podcast is free the only fee I ask you to pay for listening is that you like, share and subscribe. Also out now are the Crushing The Stigma Tees which support everything I'm doing with the podcast. Don’t miss the conclusion of our three-part series with World War II Medal of Honor recipient Hershel ‘Woody’ Williams. In this episode, we resume our conversation on the eve of the invasion of Iwo Jima. Woody takes us through the invasion, his actions on February 23, 1945, and a few other stories from those incredibly difficult days on Iwo Jima. Woody closes the interview with his advice to our youth today, and also discusses his love for horses. Following our interview with Woody, continue listening as we interview Woody’s grandson and CEO of the Hershel Woody Williams Medal of Honor Foundation, Chad Graham. Chad tells us about the incredible work they’re doing, as well as few priceless stories about Woody. A true legend, Hershel ‘Woody’ Williams served in the Marine Corps, 3rd Division, 21st Regiment, in the Pacific Theater during World War II. Mr. Williams is one of only two living recipients of the Congressional Medal of Honor (our nation’s highest military award) from World War II (the other is Mr. Charles H. Coolidge – a truly amazing man who was awarded the Medal of Honor for actions in Europe). Woody earned his Medal of Honor for actions on February 23, 1945, during the invasion of Iwo Jima. In an unbelievable span of several hours, Woody utilized a flame thrower to neutralize a network of concrete-reinforced Japanese pillboxes, under extremely heavy fire, after the majority of his company had been killed or wounded. His actions in the face of ruthless enemy resistance allowed his company to reach its’ objective and ultimately secure one of the airfields on Iwo Jima. Although Woody’s heroic actions on February 23, 1945, will never be paralleled or forgotten, he has never stopped serving our great nation. Woody grew up on a dairy farm in Quiet Dell, West Virginia. Like many young men growing up during the Great Depression, he lived a very simple life, and didn’t know (or care) much about what was happening in the rest of the world. That is, until December 7, 1941. After the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor, Woody embarked on a long journey of service that still continues today. After joining the Marine Corps, and setting sail for the South Pacific, Woody landed in New Caledonia and was assigned to the 3rd Marine Division. He experienced his first combat in Guam, and several months later, boarded a ship to invade Iwo Jima. Following his career in the Marine Corps, Woody served 33 years in the VA, and in 2010 founded the Hershel Woody Williams Medal of Honor Foundation (http://www.hwwmohf.org/), an organization dedicated to honoring Gold Star Families. Gold Star families have lost loved ones to military service, and Woody has dedicated his life to honoring them. At age 97, Woody works tirelessly, day-in and day-out, to honor these families through the building of monuments. At the time of this writing, Woody’s foundation has constructed 76 Gold Star Monuments, in all 50 U.S. states, with 74 additional monuments in-progress, and more being added each day. We are currently working on building a monument in downtown San Antonio, Texas, to honor Gold Star families in Central and South Texas. Candy and Ed Martin, parents of 1LT Tom Martin (who made the ultimate sacrifice in Iraq in October 2007) are working closely with Woody and his foundation to ensure an incredible monument is constructed to honor Tom, and all Gold Star families in South/Central Texas. Whether you spotted Woody visiting with the President on Air Force One this past September, or saw him on national television tossing the coin for Super Bowel LII, you can be sure of one thing: Woody has more energy at 97 than most people half his age. I am proud to share his story during this three-part interview
Driving through a low-income area near his church, Colorado pastor Chad Graham started praying for “our neighbors.” When he noticed a small laundromat, he stopped to take a look inside and found it filled with customers. One asked Graham for a spare coin to operate the clothes dryer. That small request inspired a weekly “Laundry Day” sponsored by Graham’s church. Members donate coins and soap to the laundromat, pray with customers, and support the owner of the laundry. Their neighborhood outreach, which dares to include a laundromat, reflects Jesus’s Great Commission to His disciples. As He said, “I have been given all authority in heaven and on earth. Go, then, to all peoples everywhere and make them my disciples: baptize them in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit” (Matthew 28:18–19 gnt). His Holy Spirit’s powerful presence enables “everywhere” outreach, including even a laundromat. Indeed, we don’t go alone. As Jesus promised, “I will be with you always, to the end of the age” (v. 20 gnt). Pastor Chad experienced that truth after praying at the laundromat for a customer named Jeff who is battling cancer. As Chad reported, “When we opened our eyes, every customer in the room was praying with us, hands stretched out toward Jeff. It was one of the most sacred moments I have experienced as a pastor.” The lesson? Let’s go everywhere to proclaim Christ.

According to an October 8, 2018, Pew Research Center report, 62 percent of Americans believe that marijuana use should be legal. That represents a doubling of public support for pot legalization since 2000, and a quintupling since 1969. Although the federal government still classifies marijuana as a prohibited drug, nine states and the District of Columbia permit its use. On Election Day 2018, several other states will consider referenda to legalize recreational and/or medical marijuana usage. How should Christians think about these things? That’s the question Influence magazine executive editor George P. Wood explores with Phil Steiger and Chad Graham in Episode 158 of the Influence Podcast. Steiger and Graham are ordained Assemblies of God ministers and pastors of Living Hope Church and University Assembly, respectively. Both churches are located in Colorado Springs, Colorado, and Colorado was the first state in the Union to legalize recreational pot. To hear more of their thoughts about a Christian view of marijuana use and legalization, check out their Thinker Sensitive Podcast series.
