We had an incredible year creating new and interesting episodes for Looking Forward Our Way podcast. Here are some of our favorites:Transportation doesn't sound exciting – but Thea Ewing from MORPC always has the most interesting details on what's getting built in our community and of course when we can expect passenger trains.Larae Schroeder has brought incredibly important information to listeners, parental debt or why wills and estates are so important. We have also highlighted some wonderful programs that support our seniors – help people age in place! Anna Tobin directs the Fairfield County Meals on Wheels Lisa Stockdale from “Aging in Full Bloom”, and Josh Kinzel from Seniority Benefit Group to give us tips on Medicare changes and Encore Ohio featured various senior housing programs and the legal ramifications for local communities. And we have to give a shout-out to the newly retired director of COAAA – Cindy Farson – for an incredible overview on the history of senior services in the U.S. and the new director of COAAA – Katie White – who has directed not only a “Village”, but also the Age Friendly Columbus/Franklin County program – with a broad perspective on the issues we need to recognize and plan for the changes! We dove into media issues - social media, news, and particularly the issues of political reporting. Thanks to Rodney Dunigan from Channel 6, Bonnie Rutledge from the Harrison County News-Herald, and Mike Thompson, news director from WOSU – all provided us with incredible insight into the difficulties of not only reporting news but finding and providing the truth. We have provided support to job seekers, particularly those who are having difficulty in their search due to age or skills. Our friend Sharon Hamersley discussed age-proofing your resume, as well as what to expect in job searching in 2023.We brought in experts to discuss the issues of Ohio businesses, including the Tri-Village Chamber Partnership, our friend Kelly Fuller from the Columbus Chamber, as well as Steve Stivers, President of the Ohio Chamber. Our friend Darlene Ziebell discussed business strategies and Peggy Tidwell from Park National Bank provided guidance on business financial strategies. And we featured several local businesses – shout out to Ava Edmond from Ava's Jewelers in Lancaster, Kathleen Carmody from Senior Matters Home HealthcareWe featured special topics – the Nice Guy Technology team always brings in great information for our personal and business technology use. Judge Mary Kay Ryan Fenlon discussed her encore career. Mandy Morckel helped us save money through easy couponing programs. Tammy Wharton, CEO of the local Girl Scouts XXXX, discussed the need for STEM programs for young women. Franklin County Auditor Mike Stinziano and Katie White from COAAA discussed a study they published focusing on the struggles of older citizens paying for their property taxes, as well as the costs of housing. And you and your wife, Dr. Angela Beumer Johnson gave us an inner look on “empty nesting”. There were two very important programs we had this year that I am particularly proud of – the first was a special look at the employment services programs developed during the pandemic by two local nonprofits – New Directions Career Center and Jewish Family Services. Jami Philips and Malka Bendor discussed the new avenues taken by each agency so those job seekers to successfully prepare for their job search and employment. The second program was an emotional roller-coaster – Dr. Dana Robinson-Street is a...

Early on in Robbie Banks' career, she grew used to being in rooms where she was the only woman, the only young person, and often, the only person of color. Banks, the new program director for diversity, equity and inclusion for the Columbus Partnership, is now helping Columbus' private sector build more racial equity inside their organizations. "My job essentially is to shepherd the work that is being done with our members that are the CEOS of our region's employers who have a strong interest and passion in moving our community toward being anti-racist," she said on our latest episode of the Women of Influence podcast. Banks said that she decided early on to embrace the role in which she found herself. "I soon recognized how valuable (it was) being in that space was and how I needed to embrace that," Banks said. "Not to look at it as a negative. How do I make sure that I speak up, that I advocate for things that are important to me and my work? I wanted to make sure I was listening more than anything, taking it in and being ready to add any input, ask questions when appropriate, so that I could make sure my demographic or my gender or whatever it may be, had a voice at the table." She comes to Columbus Partnership from Leadership Columbus, where she served as the program director for more than two years. She also spent five years before that working for Experience Columbus. Previously, she also served as the leader of Columbus Chamber's young professionals program. Banks said when she was younger, she decided to "just be a sponge in any room that I was in," soaking up leadership lessons. Now, as the result of her experience, she has realized the value of speaking up. And she feels much more confident doing so. "There was a time where I would kind of sit back and more or less listen," she said. There's a time and place for that. But now because of my experience people look to me to speak up. I don't always need to, but that is certainly the expectation that comes with being a leader and helping to advance this important work." She said that advancing diversity, equity and inclusion will require her to build a "sustainable strategy" that is executable over several years. It's not a quick process, she said. "My hope is for myself to continue learning to be a continuous learner and educating myself and being more aware," she said. "Self awareness is key in any leadership position, any position period. ... We need to work toward being at the forefront of having this be a sustainable strategy. That is something that takes a lot of learning and listening on my end."

Regardless of the news of the day, our economy and our workforce are always at the forefront. We all want to know if our jobs are secure, or, if we need a job that one is going to come our way. In this part one of a two part series, we talk with https://www.linkedin.com/in/kelly-fuller-49891512/ (Kelly Fuller, Director of Workforce Development for the Columbus Chamber) and https://www.linkedin.com/in/johnhambrick/ (John Hambrick, Work-Based Learning Coordinator at the Educational Service Center of Central Ohio) (ESC). We start with their perceptions of our job market today. Yes, we are in a pandemic, but that will change. We may not return to the “old normal”, we may enter a new pattern. How has the workforce changed for the good and bad? We would all like a “crystal ball” telling us when the current situation will change.  We find out what they think we should expect as we enter into 2021. We have a strong suspicion that many jobs will change once we work through the pandemic. We talk about particular jobs or industries that will not make it through this crisis. And if they see particular jobs or industries that have been created in the pandemic that will continue to grow/build over the next year or two or more. https://u.pcloud.link/publink/show?code=XZFYLQXZnPlsmdaTgNYp1TINmQAYfy6nneJX (Here is a link to the list of resources mentioned in the podcast.) As we wrap up our first year of Gravity, we wanted to reflect on what we’ve learned and extend gratitude to all of you for joining us on this incredible journey.  The vision for this podcast was to explore the human experience — the one we're all having, and hopefully transforming and expanding and evolving as we go — because we believe that sharing our experiences, openly and honestly, can really connect us, help us, and inspire us. We’re also including a speech that Brett gave to the Columbus Chamber of Commerce in February 2020, shortly after this show launched. Brett took that opportunity to share his story, more openly, honestly, and publicly than ever before. And after that speech, Brett had so many people reaching out to him to thank him for giving them permission to be more vulnerable, to talk about things like mental health trauma — and in a room full of business leaders, of all places. When we’re able to see ourselves in somebody else's journey, it helps us navigate our own. And that experience just reinforced our belief in the vision for this podcast, and we hope the conversations we share in 2021 will help you keep growing and find new sources of joy in your life. Cathy Lyttle, a former journalist turned Columbus Chamber exec turned C-suite officer at Worthington Industries, had a front row seat to the Columbus Crew's arrival in Columbus. She was working for the chamber at the time, and was closely involved in the push to bring the team to Central Ohio. How did she feel, then, more than 20 years later, when it looked like the team might leave? "I was sad about that, and a little bit angry, to be quite honest," Lyttle said during a recent taping of our Women of Influence podcast. Now an executive at Worthington, Lyttle said she "kept tabs" on the effort to save the team "from afar," and was aware fo the behind-the-scenes maneuvering to keep the Crew here. Now the power player who not only helped land the Crew but also helped launch the business office of what the Columbus Blue Jackets says she's excited to see all of Columbus' sports teams come together in the Arena District, once the Crew's new stadium is finished. "We've always appreciated what sports can do for a city," Lyttle said. Of course, sports aren't doing much of anything right now, as all the country's major leagues remain on hold amid the coronavirus pandemic. My conversation with Lyttle was recorded in late March, just a few weeks after most of us started working from home and not doing much of anything else. Listen to the full conversation to hear how Lyttle is de-stressing during this unprecedented time, why she thought her first big job offer was a prank by her brother at first, and how she decides which opportunities to take on and which ones to turn down.

But in both cases with cbuzz, the host is not a Columbus Chamber employee. They're using outside talent. Today I am excited to bring you a great conversation with Dan Swartwout. Dan is a stand-up comedian, an entrepreneur, a philanthropist, host of the show cbuzz, a City Council Member, and an all-around great person.   Cbuzz is a Columbus’ first business-focused podcast. Dan has been hosting it for a year, and they have formed media partnerships with the Columbus Chamber of Commerce, CD 102.5, Rev One Ventures and the Columbus Dispatch. Every month one episode airs on CD 102.5, and Dan recently recorded a show in front of a live studio audience with Matt Scanlon of CoverMyMeds.   “The great speaker and the good speaker are both prepared and ready and on top of what it is they're going to do. The great speaker, however, doesn't appear to be over-prepared.”   Dan recently gave a speech at the Columbus Chamber of Commerce, a warmup of sorts before the meeting. It was 8:30 in the morning, he was wearing a suit, and he had to address over 1000 people. Using the skills he has developed from standup comedy, hosting events, and hosting his show, he was able to perform well and create positive word-of-mouth for his brand.   “It was exciting. It was different. It was another chance to kind of stretch my skills a little bit and, you know. The more skills you have to your arsenal, the more things you can do.”   I also had the opportunity to do something I don’t normally do, or at least haven’t done in a long time, and that was perform standup comedy. I hired Dan to help me prepare, and it helped immensely. When I went to perform I was much more comfortable. I wasn't going to fall on my face because: I had a coach I worked at it I trusted my skills   “If you have a skillset you need to develop and there are people around you who have an expertise or a lot of experience in that particular skill set, that's a valuable resource”   Dan has an event coming up in November called Kicking Cancer with Dan Swartwout. This will be the 3rd time the event is held, and it is for brain cancer and research for brain cancer at the James Cancer Hospital here at the Ohio State University. If you haven’t seen Dan’s act, he’s sort of known for being able to do a high kick.   I can’t thank Dan enough for coming on the show. He is an incredibly talented and funny guy that gives an incredible amount of himself and his time to his community, and I appreciate him for sharing his time and his insights with the Improv audience. --   Resources: Find more about Dan: Website | Facebook | Twitter Listen to cbuzz   Production & Development for Improv Is No Joke by Podcast Masters   Learn more about your ad choices.
