Tariq Tarey is a documentary photographer and filmmaker based in Columbus, OH. Over the years, he has captured thousands of portraits of refugees from around the world whom the U.S. government resettled in Central Ohio.Tariq himself arrived in the States in the mid '90s as a refugee from his native Somalia. He therefore has a particular empathy for his subjects, many of whom like him hail from Somalia but also from a myriad global locations, from Nepal and Iraq to the Democratic Republic of Congo and more recently Ukraine. His passion is not only for his work's artistic expression, though, but also for its documentary value. Tariq wants to ensure that the refugees' faces and the histories they contain are photographed and then archived with the same care shown to their antecedents who in centuries past arrived largely from Europe through Ellis Island.   Tariq has also conducted photographic projects in refugee camps around the world and has directed documentary films, including "Women, War and Resettlement: Nasro's Journey" and "Silsilad," which have been featured on PBS, and most recently "The Darien Gap," which was showcased at the 2nd United States Conference on African Immigrant and Refugee Health. His photos have been exhibited in several institutions, including the Ross Museum and Wright State University, and several are now part of the permanent collections at the Columbus Museum of Art and the Ross Museum.  His deep knowledge of the refugee experience stems not only from his own personal excellence. For years now he has worked as the Director of Refugee Social Services at Jewish Family Services in Columbus, Ohio. Talked with Courtney Marx, Director of Mental Health First Aid program at Alpert Jewish Family Services.  Alpert JFS mission is to strengthen the entire community by empowering folks through the delivery of comprehensive human services.  They have a wide variety of mental health services for all ages, mentoring, food delivery, elder care, elder planning, holocaust survivor groups, education loads, addiction support and outreach. Courtney leads the Mental Health First Aid service.  It's a training for the community to become aware of what to do in a mental health crisis to provide aid for the person while keeping themselves safe.  It provides trainees with techniques/resources to help those in the community who are struggling with a mental heath concern.  Listeners can go to www.alpertjfs.org for all the details on services, mentoring opportunities and signing up for the Mental Health First Aid training.

What are the chronic factors that are keeping so many Columbus families – more than one in ten – locked in a multi-generational cycle of poverty, and what new resources are needed to help these families break free of the poverty cycle once and for all?  Central Ohio is a rapidly growing, vibrant community, generating the lion's share of Ohio's overall economic vitality. Yet despite its affluence and prosperity, Columbus is experiencing growing inequality between our neighbors with resources and those who are struggling. Franklin County's poverty rate is higher than the statewide average, with 14.3% of county residents living in poverty in 2021, versus 13.4% across Ohio. From 2000 and 2020, over half (55%) of the net population growth in Columbus was comprised of people living below 200% percent of the poverty line. Columbus is among the least-promising places in the nation for low-income children to climb the financial ladder. Chaplains often show up on the worst days of people's lives. They arrive in a hospital room after a distressing diagnosis. They accompany police to help inform someone of a loved one's death.One in four Americans have been visited by a chaplain, usually at a hospital or hospice, though chaplains also work in prisons, on college campuses and with the military and police and fire departments.But the role of spiritual caregiver is evolving as society becomes both less religious and more religiously diverse.At the end of last year, Fairview Health Services laid off more than a dozen staff chaplains as part of a larger round of layoffs, raising questions about whether patients' spiritual care will continue to be seen as part of a health system's core services.MPR News host Angela Davis talked with three chaplains about the work they do and how it's changing. Chaplains often show up on the worst days of people's lives. They arrive in a hospital room after a distressing diagnosis. They accompany police to help inform someone of a loved one's death.One in four Americans have been visited by a chaplain, usually at a hospital or hospice, though chaplains also work in prisons, on college campuses and with the military and police and fire departments.But the role of spiritual caregiver is evolving as society becomes both less religious and more religiously diverse.At the end of last year, Fairview Health Services laid off more than a dozen staff chaplains as part of a larger round of layoffs, raising questions about whether patients' spiritual care will continue to be seen as part of a health system's core services.MPR News host Angela Davis talks with three chaplains about the work they do and how it's changing.  Guests:  The Rev. Jessica Chapman Lape is an assistant professor of Interreligious Chaplaincy and director of the Interreligious Chaplaincy Program at United Theological Seminary of the Twin Cities. She's an ordained minister in the United Church of Christ, a staff chaplain at Regions Hospital in St. Paul and a community trained birth doula. The Rev. Michael Le Buhn manages the spiritual care department at Abbott Northwestern Hospital. He previously worked as a chaplain in Allina Health's Mercy Hospital Unity Campus in Fridley and at Open Table Nashville, a nonprofit that serves people experiencing homelessness. Michael is a veteran of the United States Army.  Rabbi Lynn Liberman is the community chaplain with Jewish Family Service of St. Paul. She has worked in a congregation, as a hospice and hospital chaplain and is a volunteer police and fire chaplain for Mendota Heights and West St. Paul. Jewish Family Services of Greater Orlando, 2100 Lee Road, has been giving food to those in need for 45 years. However, the organization has never given out as much food as it has in 2022. “The amount of food going out of our establishment is record-breaking for us,” JFS president Phil Flynn said. “May broke all our records. Then June broke May's record and I've just closed the books on July and July broke June's records. So we have a tremendous amount of food going out.” Flynn said the food insecurity in Central Florida was greatly exacerbated by the pandemic. “Prepandemic — go back to 2019 — we were averaging 22 clients a day,” Flynn said. “We then, during the pandemic, rose to 124 (clients) per day.” Flynn said JFS' food pantry is now seeing about 100 people a day — which the organization believes is the new normal. The majority of people being served by JFS are people who are working, but struggling to make ends meet. “I see the working poor,” Flynn said. “My facility, we do serve — if you're homeless, and you show up, we feed you. We give you the food to go. But, the vast majority of clients — over 95% of people coming in — they're working, right? So they're working two, three jobs, but they can't get to the end of the month.” Flynn said that it takes a lot to meet the growing demand JFS is experiencing. “We rely on a combination of tremendous amount of donor support. We are a nonprofit agency. We're raising money all the time and through government programs and government grants,” he said. However, Flynn added that the funds have not quite kept up with the demand for help. “They have enough for us to just do today's job and worry about tomorrow, tomorrow,” he said. JFS bases its mission on the Jewish principle of “tikkun olam,” which translates to “repairing the world.” “You show up at my front door, you're hungry, I feed you,” Flynn said. “You need help, I help you. Our job is to save the world.” Flynn added that there are no qualifications to receive assistance from JFS “You're hungry, we feed you. It's plain and simple. Yes, because we do take government grants, we do ask some questions. Do you live in Seminole County? Do you live in Orange County,” he said. “We take that information so we can report back to the government because they are interested in tracking.” Flynn described his work as humbling but added that he would not be upset if his job became obsolete. “If food insecurity went away, then you wouldn't need the food pantries,” he said. “Just take it away. The Vancouver Jewish Community Garden had its official ribbon-cutting ceremony on May 28, just after the Shavuot harvest festival: a fitting debut for the $200,000 initiative. Organizers hope the tubs of lettuce and apple trees will shortly become a hub for teaching about the environment, feeding the needy and hosting Jewish events. Located on the rooftop of a two-storey parking structure between Congregation Beth Israel and Vancouver Talmud Torah School, the garden is a collaboration between both communities and the clients of Jewish Family Services. And while you can find Jewish community gardens across the country, including Toronto's Shoresh farms and the heart garden at Winnipeg's Temple Shalom, the Vancouver initiative may be the only Jewish farm purposely built so close to heaven. Franklin County Auditor Mike Stinziano and Katie White from COAAA discussed a study they published focusing on the struggles of older citizens paying for their property taxes, as well as the costs of housing. And you and your wife, Dr. Angela Beumer Johnson gave us an inner look on “empty nesting”. There were two very important programs we had this year that I am particularly proud of – the first was a special look at the employment services programs developed during the pandemic by two local nonprofits – New Directions Career Center and Jewish Family Services. Rabbi Alex Lazarus-Klein came to Buffalo in the Fall of 2008 to serve as the rabbi of Temple Sinai, now called Congregation Shir Shalom. He brings warmth, creativity, and compassion to the role of synagogue rabbi. A trained chaplain and gifted teacher, he is actively engaged in all aspects of communal life, from helping people with their everyday struggles, to intricate details of synagogue governance. Rabbi Alex is a respected leader in the Buffalo area, serving on many local boards including the Buffalo Board of Rabbis, the Network of Religious Communities, Jewish Family Services, the Bureau of Jewish Education, the Jewish Community Center, and the Coalition of Economic Justice. He is currently serving as president of the Network of Religious Communities. He is also on the national board of the Reconstructionist Rabbinical Association out of Wyncote, Pennsylvania. He works with leaders of all faiths, to improve the quality of life in Western New York and beyond. A 2004 graduate of the Reconstructionist Rabbinical College he also holds Masters's and Bachelor's Degrees from the Jewish Theological Seminary, as well as a Bachelor's degree from Columbia University. Before coming to Buffalo, he served as rabbi of Temple B´nai Abraham in Bordentown, New Jersey, and directed the Community Partnership Program for the Jewish Federation of Greater Philadelphia. Jo Anne and Steve Grossman have worked to create Bexley's Environmental Sustainability Advisory Committee, where Jo Anne currently leads the Food Waste recycling group. Jo Anne was Project Coordinator for the League of Women Voters when they hosted an education program to a Ukrainian delegation on the American rule of law. She was the Volunteer Coordinator for Jewish Family Services for the Resettlement of people from the previous Soviet Union, Coordinator for the Religious Coalition for Abortion Rights, Outreach Coordinator for the Holocaust Education Council, and President of the Board of Temple Beth Shalom. As a Bar/Bat Mitzvah Tutor at Temple Beth Shalom, during a 28 year period, Jo Anne prepared over 250 students during a nine-month period for their B'nai Mitzvah. Together with her husband Steve, they created Temple Beth Shalom's Green Team that provides their religious community with the tools, guidance and ongoing support needed to create a culture of conservation, sustainability and environmental awareness. Meryl and her husband Stewart Ain, a veteran journalist and recent kidney recipient, chat with Martha Gershun about her book, Kidney to Share (2021), which she co-authored with John Lantos, MD. The book chronicles Martha's experience as an altruistic kidney donor and provides a medical perspective about kidney transplants. In 2018 Martha Gershun donated a kidney at the Mayo Clinic to a woman she read about in a Jewish newspaper. She then co-authored a book, Kidney to Share, published by Cornell University Press in 2021. She was later named Special Advisor to the Kidney Transplant Collaborative and serves on the regional board of the National Kidney Foundation. Martha is a retired Executive Director of Jackson County CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) and now provides executive coaching, board development, and strategy consulting services to non-profit clients. For the last 20 years, he has been the Rosh Yeshiva at The Yeshiva of Newark at IDT. After many years of providing Pastoral counseling to people seeking advice on hashkafic and personal issues, Rabbi Skaist returned to school, earned a Master's Degree in Clinical Counseling, and expects to finish his Ph.D. in 2026.
