Many of us would rank getting along with colleagues as an important aspect of work, but, as Amy Gallo explains, relationships devoid of disagreement can actually be less productive. “While our natural human instinct is to avoid conflict, I believe that conflicts are not only an inevitable part of interacting with other humans, but they're a necessary part.”Gallo is a workplace expert, host of HBR's Women at Work podcast, and the author of Getting Along: How to Work With Anyone. Across her work, Gallo touts that the key to transforming conflicts into something productive is to understand its root cause and learn how to reframe them. “Even at the base of those unhealthy conflicts or those unproductive conflicts is something that needs to be resolved,” she says. In her conversation with host and strategic communications lecturer Matt Abrahams, Gallo provides useful frameworks and new concepts on how we can approach conflicts at work. So you want to lead your team toward innovation. Does that require that you know where you're going? Not according to Linda Hill.Hill is a professor of business administration at Harvard Business School whose research focuses on leadership and how organizations achieve innovation. When it comes to generating breakthrough ideas, Hill says it's less about a creative vision and more about stepping into the unknown. “Innovation [is] not about an individual coming up with a new idea,” she says. “Instead, innovation is the result of the collaboration of people with diverse expertise and diverse perspectives coming together, being able to collaborate, being able to experiment together and learn.”In this episode of Think Fast, Talk Smart, Hill and host Matt Abrahams discuss how leaders can foster cultures and environments where innovation thrives — where teams use communication and collaboration to “co-create the future.”Episode Reference Links:Harvard Business School Profile: Website Linda's books: Collective Genius: The Art and Practice of Leading Innovation Being the Boss, with a New Preface: The 3 Imperatives for Becoming a Great Leader Becoming a Manager: How New Managers Master the Challenges of Leadership Linda's article on the value of collaboration & conflict: Collective Genius Communicator Linda admires: Vineet Nayar + Employees First, Customers Second Connect:Email Questions & Feedback >>> thinkfast@stanford.eduEpisode Transcripts >>> Think Fast Talk Smart WebsiteNewsletter Signup + English Language Learning >>> FasterSmarter.ioThink Fast Talk Smart >>> LinkedIn Page, Instagram, YouTubeMatt Abrahams >>> LinkedInStanford GSB >>> LinkedIn & TwitterChapters:(00:00:00) IntroductionHost Matt Abrahams introduces guest Linda Hill, an expert in leadership development and innovation from Harvard Business School.(00:01:10) Leading for Innovation vs. Leading for ChangeFundamental differences between leading for innovation and for change, and the unique challenges required for innovation.(00:02:53) Creating a Culture of InnovationThe essential components of a culture that promotes innovation, with focus on communication and collaboration.(00:06:21) The Role of Shared Values and Purpose in InnovationShared values, and the distinction between vision and purpose within innovative organizations.(00:09:43) Communication's Impact on InnovationHow effective communication facilitates innovation, including strategies for engaging diverse teams and the significance of storytelling.(00:14:30) Conflict and Creativity in Collaborative EnvironmentsThe value of conflict in innovation, and how managing disagreements and diverse viewpoints can lead to more creative solutions.(00:16:06) The Final Three QuestionsLinda Hill shares practices to foster collaboration with others, a communicator she admires, and her ingredients for successful communication.(00:19:54) ConclusionSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

In this episode of The Context Podcast, we are joined by Todd Geist, Corn Walker, and Peter Vinogradov for an epic debate between Team Pro-Transactions and Team Anti-Transactions. They dive in and discuss the benefits (and bad habits) that come with transactions in Claris FileMaker 19.6. FileMaker's 19.6 version release brought simplification and cleanup to the developer side of transactions, creating new commands to cut down on multistep processes and turning hard-to-read error-catching code into something legible. This is certainly an update focused on improving the lives of FileMaker developers. All this, combined with the caveats brought up by the (tentatively) Anti-Transactions Team, help round out the conversation. This podcast is available on Transistor.FM, or any of your favorite podcast platforms. The video is available on YouTube. In today's episode, I chat with Steve Prentice - speaker, published author, writer, and university lecturer. Steve's main areas of focus include: cyber-security, the future of work, technology and people - fertile ground for a rich discussion. We started, as is custom on this podcast, with Steve's story. One made all the more interesting by his years as a digital nomad & traveling musician. Though the discussion quickly pivoted to Steve's fourth book, entitled: The Future of Workplace Fear – How Human Reflex Stands in the Way of Digital Transformation. We dug deeper into that topic, discussing how the demands and expectations of modern employees have changed in the past 5 years, and ultimately what it means for each of us. We discussed how best to address and manage fear of change individually and how managers can prepare themselves for the new normal. And we chatted at length about the intersection of human behavior and technology, a topic that's particularly close to my heart. And I really wanted to hear Steve's perspective as a professional who not only talks the talk, but walks the walk. It was such a pleasure connecting with Steve. And I hope you enjoy it. Steve PrenticeSteve is a specialist in organizational psychology, with his focus being the junction where people and technology interact. He helps the various branches of an organization (C-suite, IT, HR, and employees) understand each other as well as the technologies they face, and the changes that these present. He works as a speaker, author, consultant and writer, with clients ranging from Cisco and SAP to branches of government, healthcare, occupational health and safety, startups and entrepreneurs. He is regularly called upon by media to explain issues dealing with cyber-security, AI, blockchain and the future of work. He is a regular lecturer at the Management Development Center at Ontario Tech University, where he teaches courses related to Workplace Innovation, Management Excellence, and Continuous Improvement. Steve has also been a performing musician since the age of 16 and delivers a solo act of 70's soft rock to corporate audiences and private parties as a solo artist and also with the band Absolutely Jack. Martha Zink, The Context Podcast Host & Proof+Geist Director of MarketingTodd Geist, Proof+Geist Co-Founder/CTOJohn Renfrew, Independent Developer in the UK & Proof+Geist AffiliateAs the FileMaker platform grows and changes over time, so too will our views, approaches, and recommendations. In this episode, Martha, Todd, and John explore multi-file solutions from a broader perspective. As Todd and John posit, contrary to what most might expect, the number of files in a system is not a good proxy for how complex the system is – a complex system can comprise one file, just as a simple system can comprise multiple files. Also, optimizing systems and workflows using multi-file solutions – in doing so, breaking free from the ‘everything-in-one-file' mindset – allows for an iterative approach to development that measurably improves and rebuilds systems with new models over time.Join Martha, Todd, and John in this episode as they re-envision best practices and delve into how multi-file solutions and the FileMaker platform can help us build value in new and better ways. This podcast is also available on YouTube: https://youtu.be/RQQcA5T8R-kCorn Walker's presentation (FMDiSC): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dztdZrHdrUQOtto, Superpowers for your FileMaker Server: https://www.ottofms.comOttomatic, A Modern FileMaker Hosting Platform: https://www.ottomatic.cloudLedgerLink: https://www.geistinteractive.com/products/filemaker-quickbooks-online-ledgerlink/FMPerception: https://www.geistinteractive.com/products/fmperception-fast-filemaker-analysis/
