We discuss how he grew up on the infamous 55th street, which is known to be Crip gang territory and recently been glorified by people across the world due to the uprise and fame of the internet sensation, "CRIP MACC'. Channon talks about how growing up on 55th street was a wild experience for him as a child, with having parents who we're heavy drug dealers in the 80s and 90s and siblings and family members who were heavily involved in gang life. Although Channon grew up in a hostile environment, he was a born hustler, as well as an athlete which kept him focused, busy and out of the street life. We later discuss how growing up the way he did gave him the biggest motivation on how he DID NOT want to live his life, as well as how much better of a father he wanted to be to his two young sons. We continue our discussion, by diving into the concept of fatherhood and entrepreneurship as well as some wild stories and circumstances that he faced while growing in South Central Los Angeles on 55th street. Like usual, our listeners are definitely in for a treat like always, this is one you do not want to miss! So sit back and enjoy the crazy world of Dussé and Backwoods. Yay! Yay!
Do you ever ponder over the significance of education and entrepreneurship within Black communities? We brought aboard a leading advocate for education policy reform - Gerard Robinson, former Commission of Education in the State of Florida and Secretary of Education for the Commonwealth of Virginia. From the Crenshaw District in Los Angeles to lecturing at the University of Virginia, Gerard's transformative voyage as an educational thought leader. He recalls the crucial role mentors, educators, and his tireless pursuit of learning played in escorting him to the hallways of Howard University. In his youth, Gerard taught fifth graders at the Marcus Garvey School in Los Angeles, and ever since he's been a fervent believer in the power of education. Post the Rodney King verdict, Gerard stepped into the boots of a policy-maker, dedicating his efforts towards building a more equitable educational system for Black students. We explore education's historical significance, from the Civil War era to the civil rights movement of the 1960s. Lastly, Gerard discusses the untapped potential of Black Independent Schools, especially in light of the recent pandemic. We delve into how technological advancements can redefine black education and how endowing chairs can bolster our teachers with necessary resources. Gerard also imparts his perceptive insights on mentorship, being an influential presence in diverse spaces, and learning from the past to shape the future. Established in 1927 by Walter H. Leimert, Leimert Park was one of the first planned communities in Los Angeles. Consisting of roughly 1.20 square miles within LA’s Crenshaw District, this historic community has the largest Black population in the Greater LA region, with more than 79% of residents identifying as such. Indeed, “nurtured by three generations of African Americans with a shared vision of economic self-empowerment, the patronage of black businesses, the cultivation of black arts, and the maintenance of a public commons for political discourse, Leimert Park is not just the crown jewel of black Los Angeles, it is its center.” (https://www.kcet.org/shows/departures/the-center-can-hold-leimert-park-and-black-los-angeles) With the expansion of LA Metro’s new rail line running down Crenshaw Boulevard to Los Angeles International Airport (LAX); the advancement of the signature “Destination Crenshaw” project; and new entrepreneurs setting their sights on the district, CivitasLA is joined by distinguished community leaders offering their unique perspectives on the issues, challenges and opportunities faced by the community. Join us in conversation with Diane Robertson, Community Advocate and Founder, Leimert Park Jazz Festival (https://www.leimertparkjazzfestival.com); Akil West, Founder and CEO of Sole Folks (https://solefolks.com/); and longtime resident, Roland Wiley, Founder of RAW International (https://www.rawinternational.com/). Born in Los Angeles' Crenshaw District, Terrace Martin found a love for hip-hop early on. The kids growing up around him were freestyling and playing in backyard shows. He grew up in a jazz household, and got his start as a saxophonist, too. With those two backgrounds, Terrace kicked off a career that would make him a trailblazing polymath in pop music. He's worked with rappers like Snoop Dogg, YG and Murs. He was heavily involved in Kendrick Lamar's To Pimp a Butterfly, producing many songs on the album including the hit King Kunta. We're revisiting our conversation from 2017. At the time, he'd just released The Sounds of Crenshaw Volume 1 with his band, the Pollyseeds. In 2020, he released seven EPs – including Village Days, and Dinner Party late last year. When he joined us we talked about his thoughts on hip-hop, and jazz that's taught in academic settings. Plus, why working with Kendrick Lamar was so important to him.
Nana's recently released Save Yourself LP is an absolute gem. Looking at the complete picture - extremely high production value, master class level bars, cinematic visuals, polished and professional album photography - it's hard to believe the record was released independently. Even the collaboration with TDE's Reason was an organic introduction from family and friends in the Crenshaw District. Nana's been quietly honing his craft for over 10 years. Save Yourself, and 2018's Nana's EP, are carefully crafted battering rams that will surely kick down the door for this exciting new voice. Get familiar now, because the whole industry will know his name by the next record. Tune in to hear us talk about visiting his parents home country of Ghana, working with my ex at Abercrombie & Fitch, and James Harden making the basketball team he didn't. -Lee --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

It has been stated that “community media, and in particular radio, can provide the platform for the public dialogue through which people can define who they are, what they want, and how to get it, at the same time building long-term capacity to solve problems in ways that lead to sustainable social change and development.” For more than 50 years, KJLH Radio (102.3 FM) has provided that crucial platform for the African- American community and is one of just two Black-owned and operated commercial radio stations in all of California, a state with a population of 40 million people. Independently owned and operated since 1965, the station was sold, in 1979, to music legend Stevie Wonder. And, having operated from studios in the Crenshaw District of South Los Angeles, the station moved to the City of Inglewood, where it operates today. Join us as we hear from Karen Slade, Vice President and General Manager of KJLH Radio as we discuss their work being actively engaged in community service and standing unapologetically as a vanguard for the people and frontline voice of social change. Additionally, we discuss the importance of community radio during a time of a rapidly changing media landscape; how they’re meeting the needs of a new generation of listeners; and how this work is being carried out with the backdrop of a changing Inglewood. Despite revolutions in technology, media consumption trends and media availability, local radio listenership has held steady over the past decade. And, for KJLH under Karen’s leadership, the station has more than doubled its signal, expanding its audience reach, and has competed to earn a greater percentage of listener market share. "Anything culture is always going to be about consistency and longevity." Welcome to the Crenshaw District, home of some of LA's most creative and influential people who push #theculture forward daily. Enter Brandon Banks, a young child with a big imagination, who instantly fell in love with drawing as soon as he picked up a pencil. His fascination with art was nurtured by his mother - a teacher who pushed him to do the things he loved, and at the same time instilled work ethic, and taught him to stay curious. As art continued to guide his journey, he went from loving cartoons and comic books, to magazines like Slam and XXL - infatuated with the details in covers and ads. But how do you turn that into a career? At that time, there were few courses you could take, and no photoshop to download. However, despite not having the tools, Brandon realized that graphic design was the of the future...and the money (let's be real). Out of college, the economy was horrible, and there were very little job opportunities - especially for artists. That's when it was time for Brandon to take control of his life, and make his own opportunities. This entrepreneurial mentality would lead him to the epicenter of the creative culture that was forming throughout LA. From throwing events, making shirts, posters, and album covers, to developing eazeest.com, one of the most revelatory blogs that became a foundation for the "New West" to stand on, Brandon was an integral piece of something bigger than all of us. But when you're living for your passion, and guided by blind faith, the realities of life can set in, and you're faced with challenging choices. Do you stay broke doing what you love? When do you pivot and where do you go? This is a story about taking life into your own hands, and living for something you truly believe in. This is about fighting for your art. Simply put, this is about doing it for the culture. Ladies and Gentlemen, this is Brandon "Eazee" Banks. #MamaWeMadeItConnect!IG @eazeetho@mamawemadeit@anoushmoin@getrauschymamawemadeit.com See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
