A new housing project will launch in Los Angeles, featuring a Costco store and 800 apartments. The development in Baldwin Hills will include 184 units for low-income families and a mix of affordable and workforce housing. It will have a rooftop pool and fitness center. The Costco will cover 185,000 square feet, exceeding the typical store size, and will provide two levels of underground parking. Thrive Living plans to start construction in early 2025, targeting completion by 2027. This represents the first residential development in the U.S. to incorporate a Costco. The project aims to generate rental income from Costco to support the affordable housing units, with a construction cost estimate of $425 million. It will create thousands of construction jobs and about 400 permanent jobs with the store's opening. The project gained approval under California's Assembly Bill 2011, which accelerates the approval process for affordable housing initiatives.Learn more on this news visit us at: https://greyjournal.net/ Hosted on Acast. (31:48) On Monday, the nation's biggest movie theater chain said it is implementing the same kind of ticket pricing. Called Sightline, the program from the financially strapped AMC Theatres chain will offer three different prices based on seat location. AMC is introducing Sightline this week at some of its theaters in New York, Chicago and Kansas City, and said it will expand the tiered pricing plan nationwide by the end of the year. The price of a standard seat won't change, but moviegoers will pay less for sitting very close to the screen, and more for the best locations, usually in the middle of the auditorium. The Ballona Wetlands once encompassed more than 2,000 acres, stretching from Playa del Rey to Venice and inland to the Baldwin Hills. Now, only about 600 acres of open space remain, and much of that area is highly degraded after centuries of development and abuse, according to The Bay Foundation. Although “No Stopping” and “No Dumping” signs line Jefferson Boulevard, the City of Los Angeles has permitted an extensive RV encampment to flourish over the last 18 months despite providing them with no services, sanitation or security. “We are witnessing Ballona's destruction on a daily basis,” CD11 Candidate Traci Park told voters this summer. On this episode, hosts Peter Ravella and Tyler Buckingham speak with Dr. Tom Ford, the Chief Executive Officer of The Bay Foundation, Director of the Santa Monica Bay National Estuary Program, and Co-Executive Director of the Coastal Research Institute at Loyola Marymount University. Nearly two million people live in the Santa Monica Bay Watershed stretching from Ventura County to Palos Verdes, from the Santa Monica Mountains and Griffith Park to Baldwin Hills and out to the sea—and more than 5,000 species of animals, fish, birds, and plants make their home in the Bay and the Bay Watershed. The Bay Foundation (TBF) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit environmental group founded in 1990 to restore and enhance Santa Monica Bay and local coastal waters. TBF is staffed by science and policy experts who are passionate about understanding and protecting the Bay and its watershed. This provides many benefits to people and wildlife, supports a strong economy, and improves our quality of life. TBF works with a broad group of stakeholders, including government agencies, environmental groups, local communities, industry leaders, and scientists, to create and put into action innovative projects that clean up our waterways, create green spaces in urban areas, and restore natural habitats both on land and underwater, such as wetlands and kelp forests. TBF supports the U.S. EPA's Santa Monica Bay National Estuary Program (SMBNEP). The SMBNEP is one of 28 similar programs established under Section 320 of the 1987 Clean Water Act and administered by the U.S. EPA. A central aspect of this work is the implementation of 44 goals, as defined in the SMBNEP's Comprehensive Conservation and Management Plan (CCMP). This publicly developed and adopted plan of action provides a road map for the protection and restoration of Santa Monica Bay and local interests. Learn more about the SMBNEP. For further details, reference the Memorandum of Agreement between the Santa Monica Bay Restoration Commission and The Bay Foundation regarding the Santa Monica Bay National Estuary Program.
Jessica Sarowitz made her fortune through the payroll company she founded with her husband, Steve — but she was not raised with that sort of wealth. While growing up, she remembers that even though she spoke a different language and looked different from her classmates, her parents instilled a confidence in her that she still carries with her today. Most recently, Sarowitz served as an executive producer on the documentary “With This Light,” which follows a nun in Honduras known as the Mother Teresa of Central America. Sarowitz is building a five-acre film studio in the heart of Baldwin Hills and the Crenshaw corridor, which she hopes to use to empower diverse filmmakers and artists while encouraging the storytelling of underrepresented groups.

‘Mother Tongue'. What does it mean?Is it the spoken language of home, the language of parents, ancestors, and country of origin? Is the language of place, a rooted connection to heritage, tradition, people, music, rituals, religion? The DNA of a particular ethnic experience? ‘Mother Tongue' merges the past and present, a sometimes invisible gift of identity, particularly when displaced in another land.Felema Yemaneberhan grew up in Los Angeles, but throughout her childhood she was brought back to another home, in Eritrea, north of Ethiopia, a country traumatized by Italian colonization and Civil War. In the US, before the age of 5, she only spoke Tigrinya, the language of her ancestral home, a place where her parents still anticipate returning.
There’s a bold plan in LA’s Crenshaw neighborhood to purchase the local mall for north of $100 million and let the community profit from its redevelopment. The idea has a lot of support from business owners and residents. But the Baldwin Hills Crenshaw Mall’s owners, lenders, and some community leaders aren’t convinced. “When someone comes in from the outside and [has] a completely different agenda, it might not be what’s best for the neighborhood,” says Malik Muhammad, who has owned and operated Malik’s Books at the Crenshaw Mall since the early 1990s. “It might be a plan to gentrify, uproot and push [us] out. … We need to develop our own communities.” Enter Downtown Crenshaw Rising, a community effort to buy the mall, redevelop it, and let the neighborhood profit from its economic revitalization. “We heard that the plan was to build luxury condos and townhouses here. We knew that we had to draw a line in the sand and really stop that type of gentrification from happening,” says Niki Okuk, a local entrepreneur and board president with Downtown Crenshaw.

Hi, I'm Jennifer Carter and thank you for joining me on a podcast for parents, teachers, and administrators. Today's conversation should be a good one and I'm sure it's something on your mind. So let's get to it. I just want to thank you, Miss Gail Hawkins, for joining us and or joining me. It won't be us until we play it on the actual podcast. Okay okay. Can you tell me a little bit about how the store came to be a store? The store came to be a store because years ago I had developed an interest in design, and I was taking some, my husband was had started taking some classes over at Otis school of fine art and design. He wanted to be you know he's in medicine but he wanted another thing, that he wanted to explore his passion. His passion was photography. So he found out there were photography classes in the evening time over at Otis. So he started taking classes and then he knew that I was always interested in design, and he says you know they have a design class why don't you take some classes over there? And I was like oh that sounds interesting and then just happened at the same time. Um I had gotten offered to start a store. Okay. And with a friend um getting uh getting me and another person together to see about opening a small gift store right there and you know in Baldwin Hills. So we decided to go, we sat down we talked, we discussed everything, we decided to do it and then my husband said well this is the perfect thing if you want to take those classes at Otis then I will you know I'll put the bill and you go take those classes. And I was like whoa hey yeah I'm gonna do it then. You know and it was unbelievable the classes were amazing, I had such a great time, I met such interesting people. And then so once I finished it um I was able to get into the whole thing with the store, because then I felt more comfortable and that I could go into somebody's house and help them design you know a room or a bathroom or something like that or you know bring art into their house and so it just kind of came into being that way so that was the start. Wow how long have you, has the store been there? It's we have had, it first start off it's called was called “Arrivals” and it was started around 1999, 2000. Wow. And then um things kind of went crazy after we had the um after 9 11. Okay. And then we couldn't you know travel as much. And people were really nervous about going back and forth and, so we kind of kept it going and then everything my partner decided that it was not working out between the two of us so we ended up you know splitting. So I decided you know what I'm not going to give up. I am not going to give up. And so I said I can do this I, can handle this by myself. So I renamed the store. Okay. “Cultural Interiors” and we were there for we're probably there about a good four or five years late, more and then what happened is the economy just tanked in 2008, years after in 2008. So we decided hey, you know um this isn't gonna go so we decided to just bag it.
Indoor museums are still closed — while malls, tattoo shops, hair and nail salons have been open since Gov. Gavin Newsom lifted parts of the state’s stay-at-home order last month. There’s now an odd scenario: The gift shop is open at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), but the museum itself is not. In this episode, Assemblymember Kamlager gives us a lesson on what it really means to defund the police, her thoughts on policy reform and The Justice in Policing Act of 2020, and why she believes bills like The C.R.I.S.E.S Act is the answer to taking power away from police and back in the hands of our communities. Bowman’s work investigates the histories of people left out of the grand historical narratives with which we are more familiar. Previous to this project, she photographed monuments, artifacts of antiquity, and landscapes of historical significance in the U.S. In What Had Happened, Bowman returns to where she grew up (the Baldwin Hills, Inglewood, and Crenshaw neighborhoods of Los Angeles, CA), opening her own history to ask questions about the role location and landscape play in personal evolution. The images recall the events, objects, and sites that mold us in order to explore themes of displacement, family history, and notions of home. Bowman asks how we remember what has marked us in a place we once called home and how that place informs who we are in the present.Memories of place are nuanced, emotional, atmospheric, historical, and geographical; when we return to these sites they are never exactly as remembered and fail to fully complete the retelling of history. In these photographs the passing of time reveals itself in the shadows drifting over a backyard, in a carpeted staircase worn by years of feet treading its fibers, in the shifting earth cracking the sidewalk that lays over it. The double exposures and repeated imagery draw attention to the way that time alters our perception of locations. Collectively the images render parts of ourselves and the place we once called home lost to time.Dannielle Bowman received a BFA from The Cooper Union and an MFA from the Yale School of Art, where she was awarded the 2018 Richard Benson Prize. She was recently awarded the 2020 Aperture Portfolio Prize and was a contributor to the New York Times Magazine's 1619 Project. Bowman has been an artist in residence at Baxter St at the Camera Club of New York; The Center for Photography at Woodstock; and PICTURE BERLIN. https://danniellebowman.com/https://www.baxterst.org/what-had-happened/https://aperture.org/blog/2020-portfolio-prize-dannielle-bowman/https://pdnonline.com/photography-business/photo-clients/editorial-photography/behind-the-lens-picturing-slaverys-history-for-1619-project-of-new-york-times-magazine/https://www.photographersofcolor.org/https://twitter.com/photogsofcolorhttps://www.instagram.com/photogsofcolor/https://fulbright.uark.edu/departments/art/Thumbnail Image: ©Kathy Ryan

On a summer day in 1937, 3 young girls went missing from Centinela Park in Inglewood. After an extensive search with roughly 500 volunteers, the bodies of the girls were found 2 days later in a Baldwin Hills gully. Eventually, Albert Dyer was convicted and hanged for the crime. Some think his confession was coerced by police and Dr. J. Paul De River. A similar double murder in 1924, may make Dyer a serial killer. Or maybe the wrong men were hanged in both cases. Warning: This episode has disturbing content.

There is nothing like being emotionally moved by a piece of art. Whether it be a painting, sculpture, or some other form of creativity; the overall impression can be lasting and coerce us to rethink how we view ourselves and the world around us. Manifest Justice is a large-scale pop-up art exhibition, cultural convening, and community organizing event taking place in the Baldwin Hills area of South Los Angeles. Unlike other civil rights exhibits that highlight events from the 60's, Manifest Justice is hauntingly current. Trayvon Martin, Eric Garner, and Oscar Grant are but a few of the many victims who have been immortalized through the works of over 150 artists. Tonight I will be joined by Nijeul Xavier Porter, a young man who is instrumental to the success of the event; and Gabriel Garcia Roman, an artist who has works on display at the event. Both will share why the event is important -especially in today's social climate-and what it means to be a part of the experience.

“It’s really hard for someone to get their head around what the Inglewood Oil Field is.” On this week’s Hear in the City we offer you part two in our series about oil extraction in the Baldwin Hills, and we help L.A. local-global micro cinema, the Echo Park Film Center, celebrate it’s 10th anniversary. Listen to KPFK, 90.7FM, Tuesday's at 3:30pm.
Here's a little taste of what we'll be delving into next week on Hear in the City for part 2 of our Air Check series from Baldwin Hills. Listen on Tuesday, December 13th at 3:30pm in Los Angeles on 90.7fm or at www.kpfk.org to hear the whole story about the oil fields in the middle of the city and what dangers they pose to people.
Hear in the City will spend then next few shows in the Baldwin Hills at the Inglewood Oilfield. This place is perched on the summit overlooking the past and the future. On one side, the oil discoveries that drew wealth and intrigue and prospectors to L.A. at the turn of the last century and on the other side, the future of Los Angeles parkland at a moment when public access to the great outdoors may well trump the desire for traditional industrial jobs and big real estate developments. To a degree, both spaces on this summit are imaginary. To a degree, both spaces are very real. Listen to the voices from the oilfield: Part One of our Series sponsored by Newsdesk.org and Spot.us.
