We're braving the summer heat and heading to Camp Blackfoot to talk about one of the greatest slasher movies ever made! After an accident leaves the camp's groundkeeper Cropsy horribly burned, he returns 5 years later with nothing but his garden shears and revenge on his mind! Can our latest group of horror movie teenagers survive the Cropsy maniac, or, will George Costanza, Fisher Stevens, and the rest of our campers be turned into ground meat by him and sent down stream? Don't look, he'll see you! Don't breathe, he'll hear you! Don't move, YOU'RE DEAD!!
Chris hadn't even heard of this 80s slasher until TJ recommended it for the podcast. While there are certainly triggering elements to this film involving gratuitous nudity and sexual assault, this can and should be considered a slasher classic. It has all the elements you do love like awkward dialogue, overacting, campy practical effects, and a burn victim turned killer named Cropsy. Also, it's the first film appearance by Jason Alexander (Seinfeld), Holly Hunter (Raising Arizona) and Fisher Stevens (Short Circuit).
Kevin & Chris finally head to summer camp to discuss slasher cult favorite The Burning (1981). The 'mos talk summer camps, final boys, an assortment of quirky characters, deadly garden sheers, river rafts of doom, expert practical effects, delightful sex workers, Friday the 13th similarities and more. Bonus topics include various thoughts on The Blackening, The Outwaters, Infinity Pool, The Horror of Dolores Roach, and other assorted topics. Connect with us on Patreon and social media for updates! We hope you're feeling Nasty today cause thats exactly what we're covering. A slasher gore piece from 1981 that was on the UK's Video Nasty list. Of all the films is the 80s that tried to copy the Friday the 13th formula with a brutal killer in the woods this movie is one of the noteworthy ones. It has an impressive synth score from Richard Wakeman of Yes. Tom Savini does the horror effects and this was Bob and Harvey Weinstein's first film for their label Miramax. The now disgraced movie producers who were just a few years ago titans of the industry began their journey here. We're back at summer camp to discuss the 1981 slasher film The Burning! Why is this movie so similar to Friday the 13th Part 2? Why are these pieces of garbage portrayed as the heroes? What is the story behind Cropsy? What's with the random banjo music? And why is most of this movie just watching people at summer camp instead of being a slasher movie? Follow us everywhere! The Burning (1981) synopsis: “A former summer camp caretaker, horribly burned from a prank gone wrong, lurks around an upstate New York summer camp bent on killing the teenagers responsible for his disfigurement.”Starring: Brian Matthews, Leah Ayres, Fisher Stevens, and Jason AlexanderDirector: Tony Maylam (also Split Second 1992)Our sleaziest episode to date! Some may even call it a career killer, but not us! Sleaze just comes with the territory when you're discussing a Weinstein production from the early 80s lol ;pCorey is showrunning this episode, but he doesn't actually have any nostalgia for The Burning! This was a movie he discovered during 2020's quarantine and instantly fell in love with it (because of the sleaze). Zak, on the other hand, does have a nostalgic love for The Burning (because of Tom Savini and the stellar cast of first timers, not the sleaze)! So, yea… there's a healthy dose of raunchiness in this review but there's also a lot of love for Cropsy's standalone adventure. And there's a young ‘George Costanza' with hair in The Burning! Did we mention that? This movie is something truly special, and we hope so is this episode! The legend of Cropsey is one rooted in mystery and speculation. This folktale took on a larger-than-life personality with the release of the 1981 Slasher-Horror film, The Burning. In the film teenagers pull a prank on the camp's caretaker, Cropsy, leaving him horribly disfigured and out for vengeance, as he returns to take out the teens one by one. When several children begin disappearing from Staten Island, New York, in the '70s and '80s, rumours of Cropsey's return haunted the area. Both in 1988 and in 2004, the same man was convicted in the related children abduction cases. Is this man the real Staten Island maniacal serial killer known as Cropsey, or is he simply a victim of a biased media wash? In this episode, we'll dive into the true story of Andre Rand, and the legend of Staten Island's CROPSEY. Note: Some of the terminology used in the audio clips featured in this episode are considered outdated and offensive, at the time (1965/1972), this was not the case, and these clips are historically significant in how they impacted the way our society now views those with mental disabilities. (A Ben & Tom episode - prepare for bone dry humour and challenges to the absurd.) "Man, this guy is so burned, he's cooked! A fucking Big Mac, overdone! You know what I mean?" No, we bloody do not 'man'. Cropsy & his trusty Garden shears help round off our summer camp trilogy. We get treated to Thomas's impression of the camps wannabe sexual predator Eddie from Brooklyn or Kazakhstan's favourite son Borat; however, your ears want to interpret it. Speaking of predators, The Burning marks the film debut of Harvey Weinstein & Miramax. We will naturally put the extended shower scene, a relentless peeping Alfred and the braless baseball stuff down to mere coincidence. I'm ashamed to say, but one of the film's protagonists and I share a life-altering affliction. With a ton of pre-fame actors and a good script, the burning was a slasher that popped up during the early slasher boom of the 1980's. It wasn't groundbreaking but it sure packed some great kills. It's National Corn on the Cob Day, so what better reason to tackle one of the most unfortunate and unnecessary horror franchises? Rebecca watched Children of the Corn (1984) and Erica watched all (yes ALL) of the sequels and surprisingly finds a diamond in the rough. Although, most of these urban legends have some sort of truthful origination to them, it typically only serves the purpose of making the story seem more believable. Many kids know the fears that have been created in their hearts from stories like this all too well. But, deep down, it is also known that even though it is scary…it really isn’t completely true. But what if you found out that the story that you grew up hearing, whether you ignored the warnings or your didn’t, turned out to be real? The Burning. A somewhat overlooked slasher film from the early 1980’s. Well made and has the added bonus of Tom Savini handling the gore effects. Plus a few future stars that got their start being stalked by Cropsy at a camp filled with very old looking teenagers. This is really worth the watch so cue … Continue reading The Burning 1981 – Birdhands Episode 49 →

Guess what? We're back! I harassed Steph long enough that she gave in and came back to the podcast 2 weeks after having a baby! That being said, we had a pretty cute guest host this week. He's kind of a cry baby, but we love him any way. I (jessica) cover freakyass deaths, including many at amusement parks. Steph covers Cropsy aka Andre Rand. Baby Ryan just sort of cries and hiccups. Enjoy and STAY FRESH!
With Stanley Kubrick Month in the rearview mirror, it's time to talk horny summer campers, sadistic slashers, and a ton of nudity with Jess Byard June. To kick off the aforementioned month, we'll be taking a look at one of the few summer camp slasher flicks that were hard to find in its uncut form until recently The Burning. The film features a veritable cavalcade of then up, and coming talent who would go on to have successful careers such as Jason Alexander, Fisher Stevens, and Holly Hunter and some significant effects work from the legendary Tom Savini. While the film doesn't feature the most memorable villain or the most original plot, it's a worthy entry into the summer camp slasher subgenre. The Projection Booth's Mike White joins Chris to talk Cropsey's weapon of choice, the film's use of style, and whether it deserves the praise it gets. You can follow Chris Stachiw at @KultureStach and the Kulturecast @kulturecast.
