That's exactly what's happening as tariffs shift overnight, companies scramble for answers, and supply chain leaders face an avalanche of confusion. Most executives don't want to deal with customs and compliance, and they didn't have to for years. But now, it's no longer a back-office function—it's a front-and-center leadership challenge. That's where Jenae Ciecko, President and CEO of Copper Hill, comes in. With over 20 years in trade management, Jenae has seen it all—the confusion, the panic, the miscommunication—and she joins Jan Griffiths to talk about it.Who owns trade compliance—finance, legal, or supply chain? Turns out, there's no clear answer. And that's part of the problem. Many don't fully understand how trade compliance works. The moment new policies take effect, it's not just about paying up—it's about strategy, communication, and risk management. What if a company just refuses to pay the tariffs? The answer? Not an option. Unlike supplier disputes or delayed payments, customs will always collect their money. The real challenge is who absorbs the cost.Leaders and compliance teams speak different languages. The C-suite demands quick, clear answers, while compliance teams live in details. The result? Misinformation, missed opportunities, and costly mistakes.Jenae emphasizes the importance of bridging this gap, ensuring executives ask the right questions, and creating a culture where compliance isn't just a burden—it's a strategic advantage.Through it all, one truth remains: leadership is tested in moments of uncertainty. Those who thrive in this unpredictable era will be the ones who stay calm, communicate clearly, and prepare in advance.Because when tariffs hit, the best leaders don't just react—they take control.Themes discussed in this episode:The growing disconnect between C-suite leadership and trade compliance teamsHow sudden tariff changes disrupt automotive supply chains and financial planningThe role of customs brokers in managing trade compliance and tariff administrationHow automotive leaders can proactively mitigate tariff impacts and compliance issuesThe challenge of adapting to ever-changing trade policies and government regulationsWhy communication gaps between executives and compliance teams lead to a costly mistakeThe impact of tariffs on cash flow, profitability, and long-term business strategyFeatured guest: Jenae CiekoWhat she does: Jenae Cieko is the President and CEO of Copper Hill Inc., a company specializing in customs and trade management solutions. With over 20 years of experience, she helps businesses navigate complex trade regulations, mitigate risks, and optimize compliance strategies. As a licensed customs broker, are you prepared for the new continuing education requirements coming in 2025? Get the inside scoop from an industry expert on what you need to know. In this episode, we sit down with Trudy Wilson, an accredited instructor for Global Training Center and one of the five accreditors appointed by U.S. Customs and Border Protection to help implement the new continuing education program for customs brokers. Trudy breaks down the details of this landmark change, including key dates, credit requirements, approved course formats, and tips to help brokers make the most of this new opportunity. Main Points/Takeaways: - Starting January 1, 2025, all licensed customs brokers will be required to complete a minimum number of continuing education credits on a triennial basis to maintain their license. - For the 2025-2027 triennial period, brokers will need to earn 20 credits. Going forward, the requirement will be 12 credits per year. - Approved continuing education activities include live webinars, online self-guided courses, conferences, port tours, and more - as long as they meet the criteria set by the accreditors. - Customs is collaborating closely with the private sector accreditors to ensure the program works for both the government and the trade community. This includes allowing a wide range of educational formats and topics. - Brokers should work with their employers to understand training budgets and strategically choose courses that not only fulfill the requirements, but also expand their knowledge and skillsets. Guest bio: Will Urban is Chief Revenue Officer at Flexport, where he's responsible for driving go-to-market strategy and maximizing the value Flexport delivers to clients. IN THIS EPISODE WE DISCUSS: [06.55] The current landscape, and challenges, of global trade; how Flexport are helping their customers to tackle those challenges; and their vision to create a seamless experience in a fragmented industry. “The last 6 months… has shown two things: that our infrastructure in the US is over-taxed, and that visibility is not where it needs to be, when that system is taxed.” [10.19] Flexport's recent leadership changes; and what they mean for the company, and for the industry. “Dave [Clark] is all about scale and using technology to enhance what we're doing, so he's making the bridge between traditional freight forwarder and digital supply chain company.” [14.43] An overview of Flexport, what they do and how they help their customers; their mission to improve the supply chain industry; and what sets them apart. “What's really different is that we think about our competitors as our partners… we want to give our customers the very best experience, visibility and tools to help optimize their supply chain, end-to-end.” [19.00] Flexport's commitment to collaboration; and why harnessing the power of third-party partnerships is the way to better serve customers. “It's invisible to our clients, they don't have to worry about looking at a different system, receiving different reporting or updates in a different manner – it's that consistency that really drives the value.” [23.04] Why Flexport.org was established; how it's making a difference with sustainability and humanitarian work; and why global trade is a force for good. “We can be a very profitable business, and at the same time make a really great impact on the world.” [25.50] Teresa Carlson's appointment as head of Flexport.org, and exactly how her role will increase its positive global impact. [28.20] The importance of sustainability; what Flexport customers are doing, and asking for, when it comes to ESG goals; and how Flexport supports them. [33.19] Flexport Capital: how it has helped to keep small and medium-sized businesses afloat; and the importance of offering a holistic suite of solutions, all under one roof. [38.01] A case study detailing how Flexport helped a client analyze their supply chain to identify key areas to optimize, diversify and reduce cost. [41.15] The future for Flexport. “We're doubling down on technology… to make the platform the most meaningful, easy to use customer-centric supply chain tool.” RESOURCES AND LINKS MENTIONED: Head over to Flexport's website now to find out more and discover how they could help you too. GET READY!! In this episode Audrey Ross, Co-host on The Trade Squad is our GUEST HOST! Our Resident Industry Expert, Graham Robins of BorderBuddy was happy to change things up a bit and have a conversation with Audrey full of fun, value and breaking through the noise. In this episode you will hear about why its important to negotiate a raise and how Graham is working on instilling a culture where people feel comfortable asking for a raise so they feel valued and appreciated. Then we also talk about how the best learnings come from other people’s mistakes, and why it’s how you handle the mistake, not the mistake itself that makes a difference. Most times, the customer just wants to be heard and recognized, and thats where we get in trouble by coming up with excuses that doesnt solve the problem. We hear Graham’s take on crypto and Facebook’s new Libra coin, then he takes us on a journey around KPI's. After reading Bernie Smith’s book. he has come to realize that KPI's help people easily track their performance and link it to the overall company strategy. Lastly, because Audrey is a shipper and Graham a customs broker we could not let this match up end without discussing the impending trade wars, and why at the end of the day it’s the customer that ends up paying for extra tariffs. Complicated Canadian regulations also means a lack of innovation and competition, however Audrey and Graham agree that this allows a certain trust in the government that other countries do not have. In this episode we discuss: [2.12] Why it’s important to ask for a raise [7.50] We should share more of our mistakes [16.10] Libra and the future of crypto [21.50] Taking KPIs to the next level [27.48] How the trade wars affect the customer Resources and links mentioned: BorderBuddy Book: KPI Checklists Book: The Best Service is No Service Episode: The Risks of Working with a Customs Broker with Graham Robin Stay Connected with the Podcast Find us at Let’s Talk Supply Chain
