After only swimming in relay prelims at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, Mollie O'Callaghan has been on an absolute warpath on the international swim stage since, capping it off by winning individual gold in the 200 free and relay gold in the 4x100 and 4x200 free relays in Paris. Just before Tokyo in 2019, O'Callaghan had considered herself primarily a backstroke swimmer who swam sprint freestyle. But as she's progressed under coach Dean Boxall, she's dipped her toes more and more into mid-distance freestyle training and racing. That was highlighted last year at the 2023 World Championships, where she won a world title in the event and broke a 14-year-old world record. Listen to how O'Callaghan reflects on her progression in the pool over the last 5 years and her experience in Paris.

In this podcast, Shayna tells us how she has been feeling since being cleared to return to the pool a few months ago, and what goals she and coach Dean Boxall have set for the future now she is free to compete. We discuss her ban from 2019, how it came about, how she heard about it and the struggles she went through trying to process what she was going to do. We discuss the dark days through her ban, but also the strength and resolve Shayna had to persevere, never give up and fight her way back to where she is today. We also discuss how Swimming Australia could look at how they can better support athletes in the future who may be going through difficulties out of the pool, as well how the whole 2 year 3 month ban has helped Shayna realise she is much more than just an athlete and what other interests and passions she has outside of the pool now to help give her a great athlete/life balance. Genuinely one of my favourite chats since starting the podcast in 2018, its roar, its real and its honest and if your like me i don't think you can help but come away from this podcast with admiration and empathy for Shayna Jack for everything she has been through over the last 2 and a half years, and how she never gave up, stayed true to her self and is now coming back bigger and stronger than ever.

Michael Bohl is a 5x Olympic swim coach for Australia. He is the coach of Emma McKeon and Emily Seebohm at Griffith University in Brisbane. At the Tokyo Olympics, Emma McKeon won a record 7 Olympic medals, making her the most decorated female swimmer in history at a single Games. Emily Seebohm, who many had written off at the age of 27, touched 3rd in the Women's 200 Backstroke to claim a bronze medal. Coach Michael Bohl spent 14 years at St. Peters, before leaving for GU in 2017. He left St. Peters in the hands of his Juniors coach, the ultimate warrior himself, Dean Boxall. Clyde Lewis, Jack Cartwright, and Ariarne Titmus all came through this program. Brett digs deep to find out how you get a woman to go 51 in a 100 Freestyle. He also gets an update on his former pupil, Cody Simpson, who is now swimming under Bohly. Bohly, as most people call him, also talks about his former swimmer and long time colleague, Dean Boxall. Dean Boxall coached our own Eve Thomas and half a dozen Australian Olympic swimmers including power house Ariarne Titmus, who won two golds, a silver and a bronze in Tokyo. And when Titmus beat USA superstar Katie Ledecky in the 400m freestyle, Boxall almost self-combusted. No words really do it justice so here's the man himself.
