Even rupturing her achilles on safari in Tanzania just 18 months ago couldn't keep Olympic medallist Anabelle Smith out of the pool in Paris. The self-described “sport obsessed, Olympics crazy kid” and her teammate Maddison Keeney were the first divers to qualify for the Australian Olympic Team for Paris 2024. Anabelle's perseverance took her through rehab, weight training wearing a boot and strengthening her mind through sports psych coaching to reach peak form. The Olympic Bronze Medallist, triple Olympian, and Commonwealth Games Champion gives insight into what it's like standing on that three-metre diving board, waiting for her dive. “There's a little buzzer that goes, I can hear my heart beating through my ears, my body's shaking. I've got 10 seconds to gather my thoughts, get it all under control, That's when I trust my body has done all the training to know what to do. “You know as soon as you hit the water if you've done a good dive. So to come up and hear everyone screaming and see your coach smiling, that's pretty special.” You don't want to miss a single episode of En Route to Paris, with host and former Olympic water polo player Rowie Webster talking to our greatest Olympians. "You're only as good as you are on your worst day... be better than your opponent on that day." It's a fitting quote shared by Australia's most successful track cyclist Anna Meares from her childhood coach Reg Tucker. This Australian cycling great is one well-qualified Chef de Mission for the Australian Olympic Team in Paris 2024. An Olympic rookie in 2004, who completely rehabilitated herself after THAT crash in 2008, then used her famous rivalry with English cyclist Victoria Pendleton to spur her on to success at London 2012, Anna proudly led her fellow athletes as flag bearer in Rio 2016. The Olympic and Commonwealth gold medallist credits what she learned about vulnerability in her personal life as parent and foster parent, and partner, with helping her round out her mindset. In this candid chat with three-time Olympian, Australian water polo player and En Route to Paris host Rowie Webster, Anna pulls back the curtain to speak about vulnerability, the pressures of sport, fear of failure and what kind of surprises might be in store in Paris.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Liam Adams continues to perform at the highest level and race out of his skin when competing for Australia at the major championships, with one of the most courageous and ballsy efforts we've ever witnessed when attacking early off the front over at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games. Liam had learnt from previous race experiences against the East Africans, that allowing them to control the race with a fartlek type style of racing, would only lessen his chances of a good result. Liam was confident that settling into an early fast rhythm that was sustainable for the distance, would set himself up for his best performance on the day and throw a cat among the pigeons for the Africans. Liam gritted it out like he always does and was closing in on the runner in third spot with the gap to the bronze medal narrowing with every stride as they neared the finish line but unfortunately ran out of real estate and finished seven seconds behind in fourth. Liam is already thinking about the road to Paris in two years times that would see him pull on the marathon green and gold singlet for his third consecutive Olympic Games to match his Comm Games record. Liam is one of the most successful runners and athletes Australia has had, and will no doubt comfortably break the 2:10 barrier in the months to come to make his spot on the Australian Olympic Team non-discretionary! It turned out that Tyack had quite a skill in the sport and from a young age he was competing on the international stage in World Championships. Eventually, his mum even took him on as his coach and his progression was rapid from there. He was a reserve for the Australian Olympic Team as a teenager in 2008 before eventually qualifying for Rio 2016 where he won a bronze medal in the team event – the first Australian team to do so. Throw in multiple other recognitions from tournaments around the world and Tyack is certainly one of our most established archers. He is currently preparing to compete in Tokyo and is looking to turn that bronze from Rio into gold. The Japanese government has privately decided to cancel the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, a new report claims. The report in The Times reveals Japan has given up on any hope of hosting the Games and will now look for hosting rights to the 2032 Games instead. In a day of high drama, the report was immediately denied by both New Zealand and Australian Olympic officials. The 2020 Olympics was pushed back to 2021 as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic, but authorities rescheduled with a start date of July 23.The report, citing a senior government official, revealed there is agreement within the ruling coalition the pandemic has made it impossible for the world's biggest sporting event to go ahead."No one wants to be the first to say so, but the consensus is that it's too difficult," the source said, according to Reuters."Personally I don't think it's going to happen."Publicly, organisers are still adamant the Games can go ahead, and say they can be held safely even if the virus is not under control."It's precisely because we're in this situation that we need to remember the value of the Olympics — that humankind can co-exist peacefully through sport," Tokyo Organising Committee CEO Toshiro Muto told AFP.However, the New Zealand Olympic Committee rubbished the report, saying organisers are committed to holding the Games this year."Both the Japanese Government and the IOC have this week strongly reaffirmed their commitment to the Tokyo Olympic Games taking place in July and August this year," an NZOC spokesperson said."The focus of the NZOC remains on preparing our athletes and wider team for the Olympic Games in this unprecedented environment."Australian Olympic Committee chef de mission for the 2021 Games Ian Chesterman also insisted the report was nothing more than a rumour when speaking on radio Friday."It's unfortunate that our athlete's have to deal with this rumour mill," he told Triple M.The AOC also released a statement insisting the preliminary plans for a joint Queensland bid to host the 2032 Games have not been impacted by the report of the Tokyo Games moving to 2032."The AOC is continuing its planning to ensuring the Australian Olympic Team arrives in Tokyo, competes and returns home safe and COVID-free," the statement claims."The AOC, Federal Government, Queensland Government and Brisbane City Council are continuing to progress the candidature for the Olympic Games to be held in Queensland in 2032 — and that process continues."The cancellation would be a heartbreaking blow for thousands of athletes around the world. It is also a heavy blow for Japan with budget documents from a Japanese government audit last month reportedly revealing estimates the Games could cost taxpayers up to $33 billion. It was forecast to be the most expensive Olympics in the movement's history — and there now seems no way for the country to see a return on its investment.Japan's opposition leaders have this week piled further pressure on the Suga government to cancel or delay the Games, The Japan Times reports.Yuichiro Tamaki, head of the Democratic Party for the People, said it was "difficult" to hold the Games at all.Japanese Communist Party leader Kazuo Shii also demanded the Games be cancelled and for resources to be diverted to battling the pandemic. It follows a turbulent week for Olympic officials after senior Olympic figures around the world admitted it was impossible for the event to go ahead amid current global travel restrictions.Tokyo and other parts of Japan are currently under a state of emergency to quash a surge in virus infections, and polls indicate that public support for the Olympics has plunged.Opinion polls show that 80 per cent of Japanese are against the Games going ahead in July and August.During the pandemic, Japan has recorded 347,000 virus infections with almost 90,000 in Tokyo alone. There have been around 4700 deaths.Keith Mills, who was deputy chairman of the London 2012 organising committee, sai...

Genevieve Gregson (better known by her maiden name, LaCaze) has become somewhat a poster girl for Australian athletics - a dual Olympic runner specialising in the 3000 metre steeplechase event, with an Australian record to her name, combined with a marketable style and humble, Aussie attitude.Gen has found her way into the headlines for exploits on and off the track. She burst onto the scene in 2012 when she surprisingly qualified for the Australian Olympic team, only it was a day late. When Athletics Australia tried to hold their line on the qualifying rules, within hours Gen was trending on Twitter and making international news. Only then did the Australian Olympic Committee get involved and open the door for her inclusion in the team. Then two years later, Gen jumped on stage at the Commonwealth Games closing ceremony dancing with Kylie Minogue ... in front of a global audience. She tells us the hilarious back story. But behind the fun and games is an athlete with enormous commitment to her craft. Gen says the drive has been there since she was a kid - dedication to diet, sacrificing everything to get better and chase her athletic dreams. And she’s had more than her fair share of injury setbacks to overcome. Gen says she found that resilience at the beginning of her career, when she struggled to cope with a US college scholarship and tried to quit running. It was that period in her life, and the lessons learned, that would set the foundations for her professional career. We talk about all of these stories and lessons learned, as well as the humourous dynamic between Gen and her husband, fellow Olympic runner Ryan Gregson, working with Nike and her approach to marketing and social media, and much more.Book Genevieve Gregson for guest speaking, marketing or other opportunities on PickStar.PickStar is the best place to book sports stars and personalities for any event, campaign or engagement you can imagine.Choose from over 1300 stars past and present, PickStar works fast with ANY budget. The Importance of the Rider's Position in the Rider and Horse Partnership   About Ron - Ron's riding career started when he rode around in bare feet and shorts and rode a pony to school. A chance meeting with an ex-campdrafter and Ekka 'red coat', Bob Williams, led to some lessons and Ron winning the first Champion Boy Rider award at Dayborough Show in 1959. Ron then win on to win many dressage, showjumping and eventing competitions up to and including Royal Shows and has been shortlisted twice for the Australian Olympic Team. Both times Ron was shortlisted for the Olympics, accident and injury prevented his participation. Ron then turned to focusing on his primary passion of dressage. Ron has produced many horses to FEI and dearly loves working with the young horses to create the true and correct foundations that enable the horse to go on and compete successfully to the highest levels. A strong believer that the correct classical lines produce success in all areas of equestrian sports, Ron is able to turn his training and coaching talents to enhance performances in not only dressage , showjumping and eventing, but also in the 'Hack' ring, Reining and Campdraft! His wish is to continue training young horses along the correct classical lines and to demonstrate the success of these principles for all areas of equestrian sport. He hopes to pass on the knowledge he has learnt from the brilliant 'masters' that he has had the privilege to work with.   Ron's Favourite Inspirational Quote - Just do it!   Who Has Inspired Ron - Franz Mairinger - bringing a new vision to Australian equestrian riding and training   About This Episode Ron's passion for the importance of the rider's position as well as the correct application and use of the aids in the partnership of horse and rider is clearly demonstrated in this video. He talks about his early days of riding and competing, his jumping days and how this all led into him becoming a very much sought after coach, coach educator, judge, judge educator and judge mentor.   Time Stamps and Contact Details for this Episode are available on  www.HorseChats.com/RonPaterson   MusicBenSound.com
