I am trying to work out just where the FINA decision around trans athlete participation at elite level fits, as far as far-reaching decisions go.It would be right up there because the reaction has been extraordinary. Emily Seebohm, an Australian Olympic great, talked of the relief given her and so many of her colleagues have been afraid to speak out.A sport they have loved and dedicated their lives to upended by something they could never have seen coming. Imagine being afraid to speak out, what does that say about the sport you love?We have bent over backwards to root out bullying and harassment in sport. But on gender, we were weak and woke.It is also, it seems, a catalyst decision. A decision that gives other governing bodies permission to be honest. Biology beats gender was one summation. Isn't it amazing how simple the thought process can be when you have perceived clearance to actually act the way so many have clearly wanted to?But instead, what we have had to this point is a mess of indecision, compromise, and made-up nonsense trying to accommodate everyone and offend no one. Thanks to FINA and swimming, this might just be the tipping point. The Conservatives in Britain have been immersed in this debate for a while, so politically it's a win. The Sports and Culture Secretary, Nadine Dorries, hopes this encourages other sports to be decisive and act.New Zealand, who voted at the FINA meeting for the decision, say the science is clear. The FINA vote got 71 percent support. Why has it taken this long to be this decisive?Dave Gerrard, who represented us and has been in sport his whole life, a lot of it at the highest level, said the evidence is overwhelming. Yes, it is. And yet look how long it took to work that out.Look at how we handled the Laurel Hubbard issue. The difference I suspect was Hubbard wasn't that good, so we hoped we could pretend it wasn't a problem. This latest decision from FINA is a result of American Lia Thomas. An unremarkable male swimmer at the University of Pennsylvania, but as a female won the NCAA Championship. They couldn't let this get to the highest of high levels and so they have acted. Not everyone will be happy. But here is the cold hard truth, most will. Because FINA did what others should have done from the start, the right thing.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Emily Seebohm has been on the Australian National Team for 15 years. She's competed in 4 consecutive Olympics and has 7 Olympic medals in her collection (3 gold, 3 silver, 1 bronze). Most recently, in Tokyo, she nabbed a Bronze medal in the 200 Backstroke. She won silver at the 2008 Games in the 100 Back and has 3 gold medals as part of Australian relays. Most swimmers don't evolve from the 100 to the 200 but she says she's a sucker for the pain of practice. Emily swims under Michael Bohl (Ep.176) and 2x Olympic backstroke champion, Kaylee McKeown (Ep. 239), is her new training partner. 00:00 Bratter PA, Immigration Law 00:04 Are you in or are you out? 03:30 Snowboarding 04:30 Being a Mum on the team 05:30 Coaching evolution 04:45 Brisbane to Gold Coast 10:10 Up in distance 11:30 Prodigy at 14 14:45 3 Brothers 18:00 Queensland Swimming 20:34 Backstroke start 23:20 Underwaters 27:20 Backstroke pull 31:00 Underwater filming 31:45 Speed in recovery 32:45 Tempo 100 vs 200 34:20 Emphasis on pulling 34:50 Kicking in a small box 35:30 Backstroke breathing pattern 37:15 Backstroke head position 41:50 Backstroke turn 44:20 Backstroke finish 46:45 Reality TV 49:36 Pay 54:25 Kaylee McKeown Support Our Sponsors: BRATTER PA IMMIGRATION LAW: Exclusive immigration representation of athletes, entrepreneurs, artists, investors, and entertainers. We sat down with 7x Olympic medalist and 4x Olympian, Emily Seebohm (fun fact, she has won a medal at all 4 Olympics she's been to). Seebohm starts off with how her 2-week quarantine is going in Darwin, Australia. Personally, it has been interesting speaking with the Aussies about this, as usually you would come down from the high of the Olympics and keep yourself surrounded by people (family, friends, fans), which might prevent you from taking time to reflect on the experience and the emotions it brought (enter post-Olympic blues). I'm really interested to hear about how the Aussies feel emotionally coming out of this quarantine, as it has given them a lot of alone time to reflect and process the experience. We then discuss Seebohm's 4th Olympic experience, where, at age 29, she was actually putting more of an emphasis on the 200 back. We saw this pay off with her earning a bronze medal in the event, behind her teammate Kaylee McKeown who won gold. Seebohm would go on to present McKeown with her gold medal, getting asked by McKeown to stand at the top of the podium with her as a result. After being told that she needed to ‘lose weight' and that she was ‘too old', four-time Olympian, Emily Jane Seebohm silenced the critics brilliantly by winning bronze and gold at Tokyo 2020!
