Hey Folks! In this episode we talk about Carly's swollen two face job interview and the neo noir The Long Goodbye! The Long Goodbye is a 1973 American satirical neo-noir film directed by Robert Altman and written by Leigh Brackett, based on Raymond Chandler's 1953 novel. The film stars Elliott Gould as Philip Marlowe and features Sterling Hayden, Nina Van Pallandt, Jim Bouton, Mark Rydell, and an early, uncredited appearance by Arnold Schwarzenegger. The story's setting was moved from the 1940s to 1970s Hollywood. The film has been called "a study of a moral and decent man cast adrift in a selfish, self-obsessed society where lives can be thrown away without a backward glance ... and any notions of friendship and loyalty are meaningless."[2] In 2021, the film was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant"

Bette Midler sang, screeched, and sobbed her way to an Oscar nomination in 1979's "The Rose," directed by Mark Rydell. Loosely based on Janis Joplin, the film infused rock-star drama with electrifying concert footage and made Midler a household name. But now, decades later, to borrow a song title, whose side are we on? From a self-destructive singer to the ill-tempered cowboy who loves her, to the fans who demand more, it's hard to find a hero in The Rose's thorns? The Old Roommates grab some tissues (and maybe some ear plugs) as they revisit the high-decibel drama through their middle-aged lens. This week I have the pleasure of having directing coach Mark Travis on the show. I was introduced to him after I watched his stellar workshop Hollywood Film Directing, which he co-instructed with Gil Bettman (he'll be on the show soon). Mark Travis has developed a new way to directing actors called The Travis Technique. Mark teaches directors how to direct the character (not the actor) in order to create instantaneous authentic performances, even on tight schedules and tiny budgets. Here's a bit on The Travis Technique.Acting is too often just pretending. And most directing is demanding and controlling and result oriented.  And consequently, the final product suffers. But it doesn't have to be that way. When you use The Travis Technique, you can achieve instantaneous and authentic performances from actors that are deeply felt by audiences.  The Travis Technique is an organic approach to directing actors that is guaranteed to create authentic characters and performances by shifting the focus from directing the actor to directing the character.Mark Travis first created his techniques out of the necessity to generate the most authentic performances within actors under a tight schedule and often an even tighter budget.  In the last 20-years the Travis Technique has grown and is now used by some of the best directors, actors and writers in Hollywood and the international film market. Mark has taught The Travis Technique to students all over the world in over 50 film schools. When actors, directors and writers use the Travis Technique, it's not just a performance anymore.  It becomes REAL!   The Travis Technique creates organic authenticity in every performance and under all circumstances. This translates immediately onto the screen and gains enormous attention for the director, actor, and writer.Recommended by Hollywood's top brass: Mark Rydell, Art Seidelman, Randal Kleiser, George Tillman, Asaad Kelada, Jan Eliasberg, John Badham and other A-listers. For over 20-years Mark Travis has been sharing his award-winning techniques on writing, acting and directing worldwide. Most directors make a critical mistake: They direct only the actor, not the character. And that is just one of the many techniques directors must master.  They also must learn how to expertly stage scenes, understand exactly how camera angles intensify or diminish a shot amongst hundreds of other skills to become a renowned, in-demand, and working director.Winner of over 30 directorial awards, teaching internationally in 50 prestigious film schools, for the past 20-years Mark Travis' workshops and seminars have covered the entire filmmaking process including: all stages of preparation, pre-production, production, and post-production.  Mark has been instrumental in launching successful directorial careers in the US and internationally.Sought out by the most experienced directors, Mark now teaches his signature Travis Technique: a simple, immediate, and powerful Directing Tool, directors can use to achieve instantaneous authentic performances that translate brilliantly onto the screen.Enjoy my conversation with Mark Travis.

Victoria's credits include Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl, Speed, Donnie Darko and Return of the Jedi, and she now teaches post-production sound at Video Symphony in Burbank. She is a member of The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, as well as the Motion Picture Editors Guild, Local 700 of the IATSE, and serves on the Board of Directors of The Alliance of Women Directors. On the My Creative Careers podcast today, we're diving deep into the world of sound engineering with sound editor extraordinaire Victoria. She shares her insights into the relationship between the language of sound and the storytelling process and why the sound editor is so much more than a technician. We explore how sound editors take production sound recorded on set or location and clean it up to eliminate unwanted noise and create the director's vision. Victoria also discusses how her career has evolved since the 1970s, what made her fall in love with the discipline and gives her advice on achieving great sound on set. “I wish that more directors would know the language of sound a little better. I mean, they learn the language of actors, they learn the language of DPs — to learn a little bit of sound language isn't going to hurt too much. But I find people just get a little overwhelmed by the technical side of it.” - Victoria Samson “A sound editor is a person who tells stories with sound. I learned that from my mom; she used to tell mixers that you're not just a technician, you're not just a recording mixer, you're a filmmaker. And we help the filmmakers tell their stories using creative sound, sound design, sound effects backgrounds.” - Victoria Samson   Highlights This Week Victoria's illustrious film industry heritage What a sound editor does to help the filmmaker's vision using sounds What made Victoria fall in love with sound editing, and how her career began Why there are fewer women sound editors now than there used to be 20 years ago Why it makes sense for sound editors to get involved in movies early What Victoria wishes people knew specifically about what she does and her golden nuggets of wisdom gleaned over her long and successful career The movies Victoria has worked on that contain the most interesting sounds, what those sounds were, and how she found them Films that Victoria hasn't worked on but that she admires for their amazing sound editing — and what she really notices about sound when she's watching films How Victoria finds focus and blocks out the many distractions life can bring   Resources An Open Letter From Your Sound Department handout Victoria Rose Sampson on IMDB

This week's guest on the John Wayne Gritcast is Mark Rydell. The legendary Director of one of the most beloved John Wayne films of all time, The Cowboys. It is the 50th anniversary of the film's release and Ethan and Mark haven't seen each other since they were on location. Ethan sits down with Mark in a very special location in Los Angeles to discuss Mark's amazing career and working with John Wayne on The Cowboys. Mark describes being a little nervous to work with Duke, since the two were on opposite sides of the political spectrum, but he remembers that not being an issue at all. The two really enjoyed working together. He also details working with his friend, Steve McQueen. He then tells the story about how he discovered Bette Midler and fought to get her cast in the Rose. The executives quickly apologized after 3 days of seeing her on set. Mark turned 93 this week and it is such an honor to have Mark as a guest on the John Wayne Gritcast. Also, make sure you're signed up for our emails and follow us on social because we will be announcing some more exciting news in honor of the 50th anniversary of The Cowboys soon! In Part 1, we talk about being a social worker in NYC, sage advice from her therapist, studying with Lee Strasberg & Ernie Martin, script analysis with Stella Adler, trusting yourself, substitution, subtext improv, "if you don't need- don't use," behavior, and her teaching & coaching techniques. Ellen Gerstein is an award-winning Los Angeles filmmaker, actress, writer and director. She's a member of: Women In Film, The Alliance of Women Directors, Film Independent, and a lifetime member of The Actors Studio. Her TV credits include Law and Order True Crimes: The Menendez Murders, Southland and her recurring role on Shameless as Aunt Rande. Ellen starred in the award-winning feature film The Golden Age and in the short film Passage. Her acting work ranges from the comical to the poignant, working on shows like Better Things, The Morning Show and in the TNT movie James Dean. She played Aunt Lisa in Friends and Jerry's aunt in Seinfeld, so you've probably seen her talents grace your screen at one point or another. Ellen has also performed in multiple plays in Los Angeles and wrote & performed her one-woman show, My Psychotherapy Comeback Tour. Under the banner of Lulu Productions, Ellen has produced award-winning films, web series, music videos, documentaries, and theatre. She is currently developing several new projects, including Just South of Normal, a half-hour dramedy series in the vein of The Odd Couple about two high functioning men with developmental disabilities. I was lucky enough to participate in an early reading of this project, which was adapted from her award-winning short film Waiting For Ronald, with a blended cast of disabled and non-disabled actors. Come Away With Me, another film Ellen adapted, directed & acted in, has won over 15 awards and been in over 30 film festivals around the world- and was made with an all-female crew.

The Baton: A John Williams Musical Journey

Probably the least stressful thing for John Williams in 1984 was composing the score to "The River," which reunited him with director Mark Rydell for the fourth and final time. Williams employed the talents of longtime collaborator Tommy Tedesco for the score's wonderful guitar solos, and created an Oscar-nominated score light years from the work he had done on his previous two films. The work kept his mind off the drama that unfolded earlier in the summer when he abruptly resigned as conductor of the Boston Pops Orchestra over reactions from musicians. And after working on "The River," Williams found himself quite busy in 1985 though he had zero film commitments that year. Host Jeff Commings talks about the story behind Quincy Jones taking over as composer on "The Color Purple," Williams' return to television and the concerto he composed for the Boston Pops after the relationship was rekindled.

This week I have the pleasure of having directing coach Mark Travis on the show. I was introduced to him after I watched his stellar workshop Hollywood Film Directing, which he co-instructed with Gil Bettman (he'll be on the show soon).Mark Travis has developed a new way to directing actors called The Travis Technique. But it doesn’t have to be that way. When you use The Travis Technique, you can achieve instantaneous and authentic performances from actors that are deeply felt by audiences.  The Travis Technique is an organic approach to directing actors that are guaranteed to create authentic characters and performances by shifting the focus from directing the actor to directing the character.Mark Travis first created his techniques out of the necessity to generate the most authentic performances within actors under a tight schedule and often an even tighter budget.  In the last 20-years, the Travis Technique has grown and is now used by some of the best directors, actors and writers in Hollywood and the international film market. Mark has taught The Travis Technique to students all over the world in over 50 film schools. When actors, directors, and writers use the Travis Technique, it’s not just a performance anymore.  It becomes REAL!   The Travis Technique creates organic authenticity in every performance and under all circumstances. This translates immediately onto the screen and gains enormous attention for the director, actor, and writer. Most directors make a critical mistake: They direct only the actor, not the character. And that is just one of the many techniques directors must master.  They also must learn how to expertly stage scenes, understand exactly how camera angles intensify or diminish a shot amongst hundreds of other skills to become a renowned, in-demand, and working director.Winner of over 30 directorial awards, teaching internationally in 50 prestigious film schools, for the past 20-years Mark Travis’ workshops and seminars have covered the entire filmmaking process including all stages of preparation, pre-production, production, and post-production.  Mark has been instrumental in launching successful directorial careers in the US and internationally.Sought out by the most experienced directors, Mark now teaches his signature Travis Technique: a simple, immediate, and powerful Directing Tool, directors can use to achieve instantaneous authentic performances that translate brilliantly onto the screen. Here's some info on Mark Travis:Mark Travis is regarded by Hollywood’s top brass and international film professionals as the world’s leading authority on the art and craft of film directing.  All of his techniques stem from the pursuit of organic authentic performances that are deeply felt by audiences. He is currently on the faculty of HFF (Munich), HSU (Kiev) and has taught at AFI, UCLA, The Binger Institute (Amsterdam), PU (Pixar University), FAS Screen Training Ireland and many other internationally acclaimed institutions and film schools.  He has served as He has served as a directorial and creative consultant to Mark Rydell, George Tillman, Cyrus Nowrasteh, and dozens of Independent filmmakers in Hollywood and internationally.  He is respected and recommended by top actors such as Beau Bridges, Henry Winkler, and Bill Pullman.Enjoy my conversation with Mark Travis.

John Williams returned to the Old West -- and returned to working with director Mark Rydell -- for the 1972 film "The Cowboys." Once again leaning on Aaron Copland's template for Americana-tinged music, Williams employed a fun theme for the 11 boys hired to help John Wayne herd cattle across the plains. He also used a bass harmonica for the film's villain, played viciously by Bruce Dern. The score is counted as a favorite for many John Williams fans, and after learning more about the music with host Jeff Commings, you might be adding it to your top 10 list of best John Williams scores.

The recent death of legendary Hollywood director Stanley Donen — the so-called “king of the Hollywood musical,” responsible for such classics as Singin' in the Rain, On The Town, Funny Face, Royal Wedding, Charade, and Seven Brides for Seven Brothers — prompts this long overdue reminiscence from our own Reed Martin who in 2006 got to hang out with Mr. Donen while working on a new play at the Magic Theatre in San Francisco written and directed by the great Elaine May who, until his death, was Stanley's partner. Reed tells stories about not only Mr. Donen and Ms. May but remembers the phalanx of bold-faced names who were involved with this production (pictured surrounding Reed, clockwise): Daveed Diggs, Phil Donahue, Marlo Thomas, and Mark Rydell. Featuring the graciousness of the rich and famous; secrets of filming the famous dancing on a ceiling sequence with Fred Astaire; a fantastic story about John Wayne; and the truth of the old saying: you don't always remember what people say but you always remember how they make you feel.
