In this episode of the ChinaPower Podcast, we are joined by Professor Xin Qiang and Professor Dennis Wilder to discuss how the U.S. and China could manage potential crises from elevated military activities. Both speakers emphasize that tensions between the U.S. and China are at a new high due to increased levels of strategic competition and neither side is well-prepared to handle a military collision or accident. Professor Wilder explains quiet diplomacy is critical for managing crises and cultural differences between the U.S. and China should always be considered in order to prevent miscommunication. Professor Xin notes that U.S. military activity to challenge normal Chinese military exercises are viewed differently than U.S. activities to challenge PRC activities aimed at countering “sensitive” U.S. or Taiwan activities. The latter would be viewed as much more hostile by the Chinese side. On an ending note, they both agree that the establishment of communication channels are essential to de-escalate potential future crises.  Xin Qiang is the Inaugural Director of the Center for Taiwan Studies and Deputy Director of the Center for American Studies at Fudan University. He is currently a visiting fellow at Paul Tsai China Center, Yale Law School and conducting research on how to manage turbulent Taiwan issue amid intensifying US-China Strategic Competition.  Dennis Wilder is a Professor and Senior Fellow for the Initiative for U.S.-China Dialogue on Global Issues at Georgetown University, where he previously served as the managing director. How do we all get there?   In the episode of the Creator Community, we meet professor, executive coach, and author Jason Patent, who shares his views and mistakes on creating impactful inclusivity.   He openly shares he has not mastered inclusivity and has negatively impacted others in his life but knows we can do better.   As humans, if we acknowledge the challenges of inclusion and see this work as a lifelong journey of constant improvement, we will find a better path forward for all of us.    Key Points You already have what you need to create radically different workplaces and a radically different world. We can learn how to shift from our knee-jerk reactions and calmly respond and think collaboratively to allow everyone to shine.   Power amplifies the ability to do harm to others and makes it harder for us to see the impact of our negative actions towards others.   Historically, those with less power have been the ones who have had to adapt- this book flips that idea on its side and instead gives tips on how those with the power can actually adapt and give preference to those with less.   Author Bio Jason D. In this fascinating interview, first aired in June 2020, renowned climate scientist Will Steffen discusses Earth System science, and his research on so-called “tipping cascades,” when one tipping point kicks off a series of others, posing a growing threat of abrupt and irreversible climate changes. Will draws parallels between -19 and climate change, in that it's important to understand science and not just what intervention needs to take place but to plan for the amount of time it takes for it to take effect. A great interview with a pioneering climate researcher who died on January 29th, 2023. Will Steffen had a long history in international global change research, serving from 1998 to 2004 as Executive Director of the International Geosphere-Biosphere Programme (IGBP), based in Stockholm, Sweden, and before that as Executive Officer of IGBP's Global Change and Terrestrial Ecosystems project. He was the Inaugural Director of the ANU Climate Change Institute, from 2008-2012. Prior to that, he was Director of the ANU Fenner School of Environment and Society. From 2004 to 2011, Will served as science adviser to the Australian Government Department of Climate Change; from 2011 to 2013 was a Climate Commissioner on the Australian Government's Climate Commission; Chair of the Antarctic Science Advisory Committee, Co-Director of the Canberra Urban and Regional Futures (CURF) initiative and Member of the ACT Climate Change Council. Steffen's interests spanned a broad range within the fields of sustainability and Earth System science, with an emphasis on the science of climate change, approaches to climate change adaptation in land systems, incorporation of human processes in Earth System modelling and analysis; and the history and future of the relationship between humans and the rest of nature.

Happy Thanksgiving! I am grateful for all of you this week. Thank you for listening, sharing, and supporting the Development Debrief! This week, Adam Doyno and I debate about the meaning of the term "frontline fundraiser". Should we continue to use it? Or is this a problematic term? We polled all of you on the @devdebrief instagram and learned that 63% of you identify as a frontline fundraiser, 29% of you do not, and 7% of you don't know. We asked you if the term was necessary and 46% of you said yes, 33% of you said no, and 21% of you weren't sure. Take a listen, and talk about it with your teams. We would love to hear your thoughts. Please see Adam's article that inspired the conversation here: https://nycafp.org/News-Events/News-Blog/its-time-to-rethink-the-frontline-fundraiser Adam M. The late and lamented Rabbi Jonathan Sacks was a frequent critic of the emergence of a post-truth culture and also a life-long opponent of moral relativism. Yet, in his book, “The Dignity of Difference: How to Avoid the Clash of Civilizations,” he was an ardent proponent of a form of religious pluralism. When first published over 20 years ago his position was both attacked and misunderstood—giving rise to questions about how his Orthodoxy and his devotion to objective truth were able to sit alongside his advocacy for a form of religious pluralism.  Samuel Lebens explored these questions in an essay for TRADITION's Spring 2022 issue titled “One God, One Truth, Many Languages: Rabbi Sacks' Pluralism Reexamined” (open access here: https://traditiononline.org/one-god-one-truth-many-languages-rabbi-sacks-pluralism-reexamined).  In this podcast, Dr. Erica Brown, a consulting editor at TRADITION, talks to Lebens about these topics in Rabbi Sacks' thought and about his recent essay. Rabbi Samuel Lebens is Associate Professor of Philosophy at the University of Haifa, and the author of, most recently, "The Principles of Judaism" (Oxford University Press), which investigates the axioms of Jewish faith through the lens of contemporary analytic philosophy, and the forthcoming "Philosophy of Religion: The Basics" (Routeledge). Dr. Erica Brown serves as the Vice Provost and Inaugural Director of Sacks-Herenstein Center for Values and Leadership at Yeshiva University. David A. Bray, Inaugural Director of the GeoTech Center at the Atlantic Council, the esteemed Washington DC-based think tank, interviewed by host Trond Arne Undheim, futurist, investor, and author. In this conversation, we talk about the Report of the Commission of Geopolitical Impacts of New Technologies and Data (GeoTech Commission). The report, which will be released on May 26, provides an extensive set of recommendations for the United States and its like-minded allies to thrive in a decade defined by data and technology collaboration and competition. I ask David these questions and more: What is the Geopolitics of Tech? Why is this report and Commission important? What does the report recommend and how is this different from other Commissions? How does the Commission hope to socialize and scale its recommendations into tangible actions? What has the process of writing it looked like? What are the main recommendations? What are the implications for the next decade? After listening to the episode, find out more about the GeoTech Commission's report, Atlantic Council, check out David A. Bray's profile on Singularity University or connect with him on LinkedIn. The recommendations, whilst perhaps not themselves groundbreaking, are each quite important, are communicated well, and would make great impact on the proactive role of the United States in the world of technology and risk at large, and would make one small step towards a better decade. I'm particularly thrilled by David's comment that this is destined as much towards innovators and entrepreneurs as towards governments and policymakers. That's what governance will take as we move more deeply into this decade. The important stakeholders are changing, the shapers of tomorrow are not the shapers of yesterday.  Thanks for listening. Takeaways from today's episode: Decolonising global health is an ongoing movement allowing people (and researchers) to provide a local context in the conversations surrounding health. Though many definitions exist, it is based on the undoing of the colonial legacy that surrounds countries in the global south.Local health is global health - a local context is required to make it global. It is important to reflect on issues on decolonising global health to avoid neo-colonization and include diverse voices from the global south to spearhead the movement. It is not just about putting a researcher from the global south on the paper to get round publication guidelines and funders. It’s not about a tick-box exercise. The conversation needs to address power imbalances in funding, teaching or accessibility to learning resources. Investment in these areas can start to close the gaps.Early in the COVID-19 pandemic, written articles expected the global south to fail. But if we had diverse voices published and circulated en masse, the world would have known that the global south has always dealt with infectious outbreaks and the global north could have learnt some lessons from countries in the global south. ResourcesHow NOT to write about Africa, by Desmond Jumbam: https://gh.bmj.com/content/5/7/e003164‘The foreign Gaze’ by Seye Abimbola, the article referenced by Salma in the panel: https://gh.bmj.com/content/4/5/e002068The word global heath and what we need to think about when talking about decolonising it: https://gh.bmj.com/content/5/8/e002947COVID-19 and inequities surrounding the term global health: https://gh.bmj.com/content/5/8/e003394What the world can learn from Africa’s response to COVID-19: https://www.wired.co.uk/article/covid-19-africaDecolonizing COVID-19: https://www.thelancet.com/journals/langlo/article/PIIS2214-109X(20)30134-0/fulltextRead Renzo’s blog on global health: https://www.internationalhealthpolicies.org/author/renzo-r-guinto-md/Salma’s article on what is global health:https://gh.bmj.com/content/5/10/e002884.infoSilenced voices in global health: https://www.thinkglobalhealth.org/article/silenced-voices-global-healthThe Global Health Security Index: what value does it add?:https://gh.bmj.com/content/5/4/e002477Africa convening - Health systems global: https://healthsystemsglobal.org/news/decolonizing-hpsr-the-africa-convening/ Guest informationRenzo Guinto, MD DrPH is Associate Professor and Inaugural Director of the Global Health Program of the St. Luke’s Medical Center College of Medicine in the Philippines. In today's episode, we discuss Earth System science and tipping points with Will Steffen. We often hear about tipping points in relation to climate change–the dangers of arctic ice melt, sea level rise and the 2-2.5 degrees C temperature threshold beyond which things become catastrophic. What we don't always realize is the complexity of system dynamics. Will talks about the likelihood of a tipping cascade, when one tipping point kicks off a series of others. He also draws parallels between COVID-19 and climate change, in that it's important to understand science and not just what intervention needs to take place but to plan for the amount of time it takes for it to take effect. Will Steffen has a long history in international global change research, serving from 1998 to 2004 as Executive Director of the International Geosphere-Biosphere Programme (IGBP), based in Stockholm, Sweden, and before that as Executive Officer of IGBP's Global Change and Terrestrial Ecosystems project. Will was the Inaugural Director of the ANU Climate Change Institute, from 2008-2012. Earth is no longer a safe operating space, according to today's guest on rabble radio. Look at the dramatic and devastating events of this year – hundreds of fires across the world, monster sized hurricanes, earth parching heat waves and drought. All but the most stubborn of climate change deniers can see this. Unfortunately, some of those climate change deniers are politicians who are making decisions which affect our very survival. It's grim. He was the Inaugural Director of the Australian National University's Climate Change Institute, from 2008-2012.   He is currently a Climate Councillor with the Climate Institute, and from 2011 to 2013 was a Climate Commissioner on the Australian Government's Climate Commission; Chair of the Antarctic Science Advisory Committee, Co-Director of the Canberra Urban and Regional Futures (CURF) initiative and Member of the ACT Climate Change Council. He is co-author of a paper called Trajectories of the Earth System in the Anthropocene.  On today's podcast he talks about that paper, written with Johan Rockström looks at the earth as a geophysical system. It presents the theory that the earth is no longer a sustainable space – we're in a transient phase. The earth is shifting and we don't have a map to see what trajectory it might take. But, Will Steffen says, it's like a domino effect. Once temperatures reach a certain level, those dominoes will start to fall to the point where nothing can be done. We're not at that tipping point yet, but the science indicates that it's coming. This interview is from the August 17, 2018 episode of The Green Blues Show, hosted and produced by David Kattenburg who is an occasional contributor to rabble radio. Ever been to a climate change talk or watched a documentary and felt heavy, powerless, despair? Well, this conversation is going to leave you feeling different - can do, ra ra and empowered. Sound better?   Let me tell you a bit about Professor Will…  Will Steffen has a long history in international global change research, serving from 1998 to 2004 as Executive Director of the International Geosphere-Biosphere Programme (IGBP), based in Stockholm, Sweden, and before that as Executive Officer of IGBP's Global Change and Terrestrial Ecosystems project.  Will was the Inaugural Director of the ANU Climate Change Institute, from 2008-2012.  Prior to that, he was Director of the ANU Fenner School of Environment and Society. From 2004 to 2011 he served as science adviser to the Australian Government Department of Climate Change. Steffen's interests span a broad range within the fields of sustainability and Earth System science, with an emphasis on the science of climate change, approaches to climate change adaptation in land systems, incorporation of human processes in Earth System modelling and analysis; and the history and future of the relationship between humans and the rest of nature.  So: We have a wonderful scientist with a long list of accomplishments in his career that has spanned decades and the best part is that he so passionately and simply states the issues, shares and helps us understand the science, looks at the future projections and what you and I can do to keep on the good side of mother nature. I’ve wanted to do a show on climate change for a long while and finding Will has meant the perfect show embedded with the low tox values of empowered joyful change, rather than paralysis and overwhelm in the face of the world’s biggest issue. I hope you enjoy the show as much as I enjoyed putting it together for you. As usual you can find show notes and our sponsor offers over at lowtoxlife.com/podcast Here’s to a happy planet, Alexx x
