Spiritual leaders on the somehow-still-peaceful planet of Bardotta are disappearing, and that Queen Julia has called upon the Senate for help. The ghost of Senator Onoconda Farr chimes in with an undignified snort, but no one in the Senate has a sense of clairaudience or of irony, and so it goes unnoticed. Chancellor Palpatine calls the Jedi Council to let them know it will in fact be a mismatched duo comedy episode starring bad cop Mace Windu and clown cop Jar Jar Binks. See, the Bardottans hate the Jedi, because they steal children, and so want Jar-Jar and no one else to come help them. When they arrive on Bardotta, we learn that the Dagoyan Masters, non-Jedi, non-Sith force wielders, are disappearing one by one. We also learn that Jar-Jar and Queen Julia are, let's say, more than friends. Shortly after this the queen disappears. The Bardottan council explains the source of the prophecy is the Frangawl clan, who worshiped a demon in a shrine below the temple, and we realize that this is not just a buddy cop movie with a side-helping of Orientalism, but an Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom pastiche. Our heroes journey to the caverns below the palace, where Jar Jar is immediately captured and placed in a cage hanging over lava. After a standard amount of Jar Jar hijinks, Master Windu locates him, and the battle rages! The cultists are defeated but the cult leader escapes with the still-captive queen. Jar-jar promises the Bardottan council for the second time that day that he and Mace will recover the queen. The Frangawl cult gets to take over the Bardottan government if Queen Julia isn't found. I'm not sure kidnapping is a good basis for transfer of power in governments, but at this point, as an American, maybe I should be more open to new ideas.Jar Jar breaks down what happened to the Bardotten master. The terms ‘crispy fried' and ‘force sucked right out of him' are referenced. Meanwhile the cultist Ornithopter lands on Geidi Prime, and if Julia is fitted with a heart plug to extract her living force I'm going to start enjoying this arc.The Great Mother (who?!) has told the cultists that they have Jedi on their tail. The cultists are being sneaky by dragging the kidnapping victim and a glowing sphere of living force through a crowded marketplace and Jar Jar and Mace still almost miss them.Mace and Jar Jar run into what looks like a genestealer cultist who sicks a couple Gundarks on them. Jar Jar's prehensile tongue comes into play, and somewhere Kit Fisto senses another erotic disturbance in the Force. There's talk of planetary alignment and apparently Lovecraftian cultists are now in the mix; we're one pair of Nike Decades away from a cultist connect four.Hey, it's Mother Talzin! More fighting with some rejects from the Uldaur raid and at this point I had to lay down for a while with some pretty severe WoW flashbacks. Mother Talzin and Mace fight, and she holds her own against a Jedi who made Darth Sidious look like a chump. Where was this when Grievous invaded Dathomir? Anyway Jar Jar rescues the Queen, Mother Talzin's scheme unravels and Mother Talzin dissolves with a scream…? The queen decides that maybe the Bardottens should reconsider their attitude towards the Jedi, and she just has the absolute worst judgment of anyone on this show and that's saying a lot.https://twitter.com/ClosingCrawlhttps://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/closing-crawl/id1530133296https://www.closingcrawl.com/Merch at: https://bit.ly/spacetimetm

Robert Kane (born Robert Kahn October 24, 1915 – November 3, 1998) was an American comic book writer, animator and artist who co-created, with https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bill_Finger (Bill Finger), the https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DC_Comics (DC Comics) character https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Batman (Batman). Kane was inducted into the https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comic_book (comic book) industry's https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jack_Kirby_Hall_of_Fame (Jack Kirby Hall of Fame) in 1993 and into the https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eisner_Award (Will Eisner Comic Book Hall of Fame) in 1996. In early 1939, DC's success with the seminal superhero https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Superman (Superman) in https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Action_Comics (Action Comics) prompted editors to scramble for more such heroes. In response, Bob Kane conceived "https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Batman (the Bat-Man)." Kane said his influences for the character included actor https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Douglas_Fairbanks (Douglas Fairbanks)' film portrayal of the https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swashbuckler (swashbuckler) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zorro (Zorro); https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leonardo_da_Vinci (Leonardo da Vinci)'s diagram of the https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ornithopter (ornithopter), a flying machine with huge bat-like wings; and the 1930 film https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Bat_(1926_film)#Remakes (The Bat Whispers), based on https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mary_Rinehart (Mary Rinehart)'s mystery novel https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Circular_Staircase (The Circular Staircase) (1908). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bill_Finger (Bill Finger) joined Bob Kane's nascent studio in 1938. An aspiring writer and part-time shoe salesperson, he had met Kane at a party, and Kane later offered him a job https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ghost_writer (ghost writing) the strips Rusty and Clip Carson. He recalled that Kane ...had an idea for a character called 'Batman', and he'd like me to see the drawings. I went over to Kane's, and he had drawn a character who looked very much like Superman with kind of ... reddish tights, I believe, with boots ... no gloves, no gauntlets ... with a small https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Domino_mask (domino mask), swinging on a rope. He had two stiff wings that were sticking out, looking like bat wings. And under it was a big sign ... BATMAN.Finger said he offered such suggestions as giving the character a cowl and scalloped cape instead of wings; adding gloves; leaving the mask's eyeholes blank to connote mystery; and removing the bright red sections of the original costume, suggesting instead a gray-and-black color scheme. Finger additionally said his suggestions were influenced by https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lee_Falk (Lee Falk)'s https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Phantom (The Phantom), a https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Print_syndication (syndicated) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Newspaper (newspaper) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comic_strip (comic strip) character with which Kane was familiar as well. Finger, who said he also devised the character's civilian name, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bruce_Wayne (Bruce Wayne), wrote the first Batman story, while Kane provided art. Kane, who had already submitted the proposal for Batman at DC and held a contract, is the only person given an official company credit for Batman's creation. Comics historian https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ron_Goulart (Ron Goulart), in Comic Book Encyclopedia, refers to Batman as the "creation of artist Bob Kane and writer Bill Finger". According to Kane, "Bill Finger was a contributing force on Batman right from the beginning. He wrote most of the great stories and was influential in setting the style and genre other writers would

This episode we begin an exploration into the DUNE universe. From Frank Herbert's original novel series to the films and TV movies that came from it. And just like the new shiny 2021 movie from Denis Villeneuve you'll be getting it in parts!Hear part ONE today! The Death By DVD SENTINEL remix theme by LINUS FITNESS-CENTRE
The crew sits down to discuss Denis Villeneuve's Dune! We break down the story of the film by combining our unique interests. Jordan brings his love of dialogue and understanding of film. Joe brings his view of psychology and symbolism to the characters and ideas presented. Finally, Erich brings attention to the technical aspects of the film. Overall Dune, is sci-fi masterfully executed with depth at many levels; you'll find a place for you to enjoy the movie. Plot Synopsis: Paul Atreides, a brilliant and gifted young man born into a great destiny beyond his understanding, must travel to the most dangerous planet in the universe to ensure the future of his family and his people. As malevolent forces explode into conflict over the planet's exclusive supply of the most precious resource in existence, only those who can conquer their own fear will survive. Brief Backstory: Dune is based on the novel of the same name by Frank Herbert released in 1965. The novel was brought to film in 1984 but fell short of its mark due to the scope of ambition of the film. With this new adaptation, technology has caught up to the point we can bring aspects to the big screen that weren't possible technically prior to computer graphics. Sophie (age 7) and Ellie (age 5) decide to tell the history of flight. ----more---- We start off with legendary tales of flight like the story of Icarus. Icarus and his father need to escape a castle. They build some wings out of feathers and wax and flap them to escape the castle. They start flying but then Icarus flies too high. As he gets close to the sun his wax melts and his wings fall off. He falls to the ground with a splat. This story actually tells us a lot about what people thought you needed to do in order to fly. People looked at birds and thought that what you needed to do was to fly like a bird. They would make big wings and try and flap with them. They did not realise that a person is much heavier than a bird so you would need to make a huge wing that flapped really fast. One inventor called Leonardo da Vinci studied how flying might work. He was a famous artist and inventor 500 years ago. He even made a design for something that he called an Ornithopter but which was a lot like a helicopter. However, it was never built. 300 years ago people started to come with ideas for balloons. The Montgolfier brothers invented the hot air balloon. This saw a fire lit in a basket. The hot air then filled a balloon which was above the basket. The hot air rose and this made the balloon take off. They first experiment by putting animals in the basket. Later they put people inside. The Balloon was very good at going high up. However, it could not fly in a particular place. It was carried by the wind. So it was not that useful. Later a man called George Cayley realised that what was important about birds was not how they could fly, but instead how they could glide. He studied the science behind gliding and made many gliders over the next 50 years. However, what was really needed was an engine in the glider. Then it could take off more easily and stay in the air for longer. This is where the Wright brothers come in. They were American brothers who were very interested in flying. They read up lots about it. They also realised that if could move the wings slightly that would help with take off. This is where modern planes get the ideas for the flaps from. They spent a long time trying to make the perfect glider. They they put a small engine in it and had the engine work some propellers. The plane took off. But it didn't fly for long. So they brothers spent the next two years working to improve the plane. This time it worked. The plane flew for 40 minutes. The Wright brothers had cracked flying. Now planes are part of our everyday lives. We use them for holidays, transport, war, fighting fires, exploring and more. Patrons' Club If you liked this episode then please do join out patrons Club. On 8 July 2006 a team from the University of Toronto flew a full-sized, piloted, flapping-wing aircraft. In this entertaining lecture the project's leader, Prof James DeLaurier, shows us the inspiration behind the project and guides us through the research, design, testing, construction and certification stages, before taking us through the events of an early morning in 2006 when a pilot flew the Ornithopter No.1, nick named “The Big Flapper”, for fourteen seconds over Bombardier's Airfield in Toronto. Prof James DeLaurier MRAeS presented his lecture. Ornithopter Research, to a meeting of the Royal Aeronautical Society on 12 September 2007. The lecture was introduced by AVM David Couzens FRAeS and the film & podcast was edited by Eur Ing Mike Stanberry FRAeS.

Imagine flapping your arms and flying. Could we do that based on how the bat does it? Leonardo Da Vinci was fascinated by the flight of bird and bats and used to sketch ideas in notebooks for a flying machine called the Ornithopter. With Patrick Aryee. Today's concept is underfitting vs. overfitting. Someone who underfits doesn't adapt quickly enough to new data. But if you think that's bad, an overfitter will read TOO MUCH into new data and come up with wild ideas. How do you balance between them and what are some examples? We also talk about Warren Buffet's Recent statements on Bitcoin as Rat Poison Squared, and the response from Union Square Venure's Fred Wilson. How does Bitcoin get it's value? We look at underfitters and overfitters in the crypto space. Finally, the value of the Turing Test. When General AI comes, will it be the fabled machine that can pass as human, or will that idea be sidelined as more profitable uses taken precedent. Also, we learn what an Ornithopter is, and get an update on Yanny-Laurel.

Up, up and away! Visit the Museum of Flight, learn about Leonardo Da Vinci and his plans for a flying machine, and hear the story of "Zoro, the Flying Apprentice". This week we survived a 27 mile bike ride which took us across the floating bridge and up the hills of Seattle (both ways). Visit The Museum of FlightYes, there really is a flying car or "AeroCar". And have you heard of the X-jet? It's a personal transportation device - or what we've dubbed the "flying podium". It goes up 10,000 feet and 60 miles per hour. Take a tour of Air Force One, a Concorde jet and see the original Boeing factory where they made planes out of wood and canvas. And how about flying a plane for a month? Hey, where is our flying motorhome? The Museum of Flight has an upcoming exhibit "Leonardo Da Vinci; Man, Inventor, Genius" opening October 1st (closes January 28th, 2007). Leonardo Da Vinci was a painter, sculptor, architect, art historian, natural scientist, writer and inventor. The drawings in his notebooks included designs of flying machines. You will find the Museum of Flight in Seattle, Washington or online at www.museumofflight.org/ Zoro, the Flying ApprenticeAround 1485 Leonardo Da Vinci drew detailed plans for a human-powered ornithopter (a wing-flapping device intended to fly). And legend has it that a young apprentice named Zoroaste (egged on by the mischievous Salai) took the machine out for a spin. You'll find another version of this story in a book called "Leonardo and the Flying Boy" by Laurence Anholt. It's Banned Book Week (Sept. 23-30)You won't believe some of the books that have banned! Such as "I Am the Cheese", the Harry Potter series, and "Don Quixote" by Miguel de Cervantes. Catch the Activated Storytellers performing a live musical production of "Alias, Don Quixote" at a library. Upcoming appearances are scheduled in Oregon and California. Check the itinerary for more information. And learn more about banned books at the American Library Association site. Happy Listening! Dennis, Kimberly and Zephyr
