The age of boom and bust is over - we were told, shortly before the great crash of 2008-09. Such confidence is clearly ill-advised. Economies boom and economies bust - and there doesn't seem much we can do about it. Or is there? How can you spot a crash coming? What should you do about it when it descends on us? And how can we respond so that, even if we can't banish them forever, we can limit their frequency and impact? In this week's episode, Nick Spencer speaks to Linda Yueh about her book The Great Crashes: Lessons from Global Meltdowns and How to Prevent Them.

Linda Yueh is an economist, broadcaster, and author. She is an Adjunct Professor of Economics at London Business School and a Fellow in Economics at St Edmund Hall, Oxford University. In this episode we are fortunate enough to spend some time with Linda discussing the biggest economic challenges of our time. Chris Caldwell asks how these challenges are exacerbated in the face of climate change, including the cost of adaptation, the transition to a low-carbon economy, and we discuss the impact of climate change on inequality. We focus on theses challenges throughout lens of Linda's latest book: The Great Crashes: Lessons from Global Meltdowns and How to Prevent Them. She argues that financial crises are not inevitable, but they can be prevented by understanding the underlying causes and taking steps to mitigate the risks. THE GREAT CRASHES has been praised by economists and financial journalists alike. The Financial Times called it "a timely and important book" and The Economist said it was "a valuable contribution to the debate about financial crises."  Chris also talks to Linda about her best seller, THE GREAT ECONOMISTS, and about which of those great economic thinkers would she believe is most influential on the way we deal with climate and its impact on the world economy. Dr. Yueh is a frequent commentator on economics and finance in the media. She has appeared on BBC Radio 4, CNN, and CNBC. "…sometimes things happen … but I think just being prepared, being open … stay curious, always wanting to learn. But also, … what made the great economist great is that they were always engaged with the big issues of the day, even if it wasn't easy, even if it was messy, even if it wasn't quantitatively as neat as their models." "…the amount of the amount of progress with setbacks that we have seen, you know, always makes me optimistic … that we've seen challenges before, some of which have been horrific challenges … and we have come through it." We were privileged to connect with three amazing individuals from the University of California, Riverside: Elizabeth Montgomery, Dr. Cheryl Love, and Dr. Rich Yueh.  Elizabeth Montgomery serves as the Associate Director of Student and College Engagement at the University of California, Riverside Career Center. Elizabeth has worked in career services for over 12 years and in the education field for nearly 20 years. She is committed to leading her team to empower college students in their career journey and to working collaboratively with campus, community, and industry stakeholders to ensure the successful transition and career trajectory of students from college to career. She leads UCR's Career Readiness Assessment Team (UCR CREATE) made up of faculty and staff leaders from across campus who collaborate to develop and implement initiatives that support career readiness, especially for first generation and low-income students.  Dr. Love is a Career Counselor and a College Specialist for the Arts, Humanities, School of Education and School of Public Policy in the Career Center at the University of California, Riverside. In this role she also serves as the Liaison to the African Student Programs and the Black Student Success Initiative. She has worked tirelessly over the years to encourage and support students in successfully completing their degrees and finding a career path that is a good fit for them. She is a strong student advocate and is committed to support students in and outside of the work that she has been involved with over the years.  She's passionate about the student experience, constantly working to ensure that regardless of a students' background or circumstance that they can not only survive but thrive.  Dr. Rich Yueh believes in helping students find and make meaning from the class content. He is an assistant professor of teaching in information systems in the School of Business at University of California, Riverside. Rich is the recipient of multiple student-nominated Golden Apple Awards for excellence in undergraduate and graduate teaching, as well as the inaugural James Merino Innovation Award for innovation in the classroom.  All three of our guests are experts in working with first-generation college students, as fifty-two percent of UCRs students are. The University has a lot of experience helping these students graduate and find meaningful careers. In this episode, we discussed the barriers these students face to succeeding in a collegiate environment, and the advantages they bring to the table. At SustainableIT.org, they collaborate with esteemed technology leaders to drive sustainability forward across the world's largest organizations.  The Link Between Technology and ESG  Jed tells Tom that companies must “take a hard look at how you govern technology programs so that they don't have adverse impacts on society and the environment.” Most companies view ESG as something in-demand, and so they independently chart the course they will take on ESG initiatives. At SustainableIT.org, they create and identify the best programs that can actually digitize the way a business functions while decreasing its carbon footprint.  Making an Impact Facilitating change is not about one technology company being pro-environment. Jed names a number of SustainableIT.org's board members, explaining how many of these great technologists work for some of the world's biggest companies. “That's how we can have the biggest impact,” he says.  RESOURCES  Tom Fox's email Jedidiah Yueh | LinkedIn | Twitter | SustainableIT.org

In today's world, it almost seems impossible to maintain integrity in all we do.  To consistently take the long view, making decisions that prioritize the good of others, is seemingly a lost art.  But if the ancient words of Heraclitus ring true and our character determines our destiny then integrity must be the unbreakable bonds that hold our character model intact over the course of our lives.  By following the character arcs of Paul and Yueh we can see how our integrity either gives way to magnanimous character or leads to death.

They start the conversation by discussing patient workup. Dr. Beck always obtains an ultrasound and sometimes a HIDA scan. He also orders coagulation tests and checks if the patient is on anticoagulation medication in order to stratify the risk of the procedure and counsel the patient accordingly. Next, the doctors discuss pros and cons of transhepatic and transperitoneal approaches. Dr. Fritts usually prefers a transhepatic approach because it minimizes the risk of biliary leaks. He also believes that it is easier to stick the gallbladder in an area where it is affixed to the liver. Dr. Beck emphasizes that the gallbladder is a dynamic organ, so doing this procedure under ultrasound with fluoroscopy will allow real-time visualization of the needle. Finally, they consider different needle and drainage options. There are a variety of needles that can be used, including AccuStick, Yueh, and spinal needles. With drainage, the doctors highlight the differences between drainage bags and JP bulbs, noting that the former relies on drainage of infected bile by gravity, and the latter provides additional vacuum suction.

Developing enterprise apps quickly is essential for business success, and securing data during the development process is imperative too. Jedidiah Yueh, the Founder and CEO of Delphix, suggests that though not as many people are talking about securing data in the app development process, they should be. Even more so, he argues they must secure this data or face huge consequences. Main TakeawaysSomething People Need to Talk About: Talking about data security is all the rage. But according to Yueh, securing development data is not discussed as much. Yueh contends that this lack of attention creates security vulnerabilities that bad actors can exploit. He believes that automated platforms built on zero trust principles can mitigate such risks.Out With the Old in With the New: The old way of testing apps in development involved a group of people all helping to gather production data and then copy that to the development territory. Of course, with so many hands in the process, the data was not very secure. Now, a platform, like Delphix, can make that process automatic; therefore, more secure. Setting Loftier IT Goals: Yueh argues that IT leaders are not setting high enough goals in terms of developing products quickly enough. In a conversation about his book, “Disrupt or Die,” he explains that the rate of acceleration is much faster than the typical business cycle so leaders must adapt the pace of their goals accordingly.IT Visionaries is brought to you by the Salesforce Platform - the #1 cloud platform for digital transformation of every experience. Jedidiah Yueh is Tom Fox's guest this week on the Innovation in Compliance Podcast. Jedidiah is a data innovator, a best-selling author, and the founder and CEO of Delphix. He has spent the last two decades decoding innovation and collecting and testing frameworks that motivate many successful entrepreneurs in technology. Jedidiah has invented software products worth more than $4 billion in sales. He joins Tom Fox to discuss digital transformation and digital disruption, and what companies need to know and do about both. Technology, Creativity & Evolution “What's interesting about technology today is it's an incredibly broad white canvas,” Jed begins. Creativity is applied to the development of technology as much as it is to the liberal arts, he tells Tom. “If you think about some of the things that you do as an English major where you're really looking for these themes and these tropes within works of literature… You have to do that for the world of technology as well.” Tech evolves on so many levels that you have to see and analyze, similar to what's done in literary analysis. Digital Disruption When Jed first ventured into tech, his main objective was finding a concept or product that would give him a competitive advantage. He had the idea of taking the backup data from MP3 players and transitioning that into the technology enterprise. Jed says that he knew that the concept would be disruptive and that it would change the industry. “That's exactly what happened over the course of a decade,” he tells Tom. Delphix Tom asks Jed why he founded Delphix. In Jed's previous company, a lot of customers had issues where they had to be restoring data to other locations to be able to use it. The demands for data efficiency had risen. Jed created Delphix to answer this market need. “The idea was we wanted to build a new architecture that was focused on enabling the multi-use of data for all of these strategic and valuable use cases that drive innovation and differentiation for companies,” he remarks. COVID-19 & Beyond The pandemic and the relocation to remote work was a profitable opportunity for Jed's company. There was an acceleration of digital transformation. Tom asks Jed what companies need to focus on in the coming years. “I think companies really need to focus on what is real digital transformation and what is not,” Jed remarks. Real digital transformation changes the way your business operates. The overall ecosystem of the business has to be transformative. “If a company doesn't engage in a digital transformation and make its own data available to itself to make their business processes more efficient, frankly they're going to be left in the dust by their competitors who do so.” Resources Jedidiah Yueh | LinkedIn | Twitter Delphix Texas Tax rate at 80% of 8.25%

Having had enough of Libertarian dystopias for a while, Sean and Cody are ready to zen out in late imperial China and break themselves emotionally with another Ang Lee-directed drama, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, a multinational Chinese-language production from 2000. When Green Destiny, the magic sword once owned by martial arts master Li Mu Bai (Chow Yun Fat) gets filched by a masked bandit who's apparently secured an exemption from the laws of gravity, Li and security consultant Yu Shu Lien (Michelle Yeoh) go off to get it back. In the meantime, spoiled brat Jen (Zhang Ziyi) is still hopelessly stuck on her ex, the dashing Mongol bandit Dark Cloud (Chang Chen). These plots do come together, leaving not a dry eye in the house. Environmental issues discussed include hunting, frontier settlement and ethnic environmentalism in Qing Dynasty China and the lavish landscapes seen in this and other Chinese martial arts pictures. Why are the Qing (Manchus) so crucial in the environmental history of Asia? What happened to all the tigers in China? What's the deal with those funky hairstyles on all the men? What's the difference between “Inner” and “Outer” Mongolia? Did the Chinese have a western frontier analogous to what existed in the United States? What does the title of this film mean? Why does the story of the author who wrote the book this film is based on sound like it would make a really great movie in its own right? Is this the saddest film we've ever done on the show? Is the world ready for Sexy Dr. Yueh? All these questions and more are dancing in the crowns of the bamboo forest in this deeply philosophical episode of Green Screen. Corporate boards are under great pressure. Scandals and malpractice at companies like GE, Theranos and WeWork have raised justified questions among regulators, shareholders, and the public about the quality of corporate governance. Boards face ever-louder demands to weigh in on questions of climate change, racial and gender equity, data privacy, and other social issues that range far beyond their traditional mandate: choosing the CEO and endorsing corporate strategy. In this week's episode economist Dambisa Moyo speaks to Linda Yueh about how boards currently function and what changes they should make to survive the twenty-first century. Self Evident: Asian America's Stories
How Do We Go Beyond Representation? Feat. Eliza Romero, Marvin Yueh, and Thomas Mangloña II (AAPIHM 1/3)

We often take for granted that “seeing people who look like us” — especially in mass media — means progress towards racial justice. But what forms of representation do we see making an impact? And who is that impact for? In this first episode of a three-part series, Senior Producer Julia Shu invites Eliza Romero (co-host of Unverified Accounts and blogger at Aesthetic Distance), Marvin Yueh (co-host of Books & Boba and co-creator of the Potluck Podcast Collective), and Thomas Mangloña II (journalist and co-founder of the Pacific Islander Task Force at AAJA) — to question conventional wisdom and share what kind of representation we want to have more of. Our team decided to host these conversations because in the U.S. it’s once again Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, a time that can often feel routine and repetitive. And during a year when absolutely nothing has been routine, we hope these episodes will join many other podcasts, panels, and events in shaking up the usual talking points of representation, diversity, and inclusion for AAPIHM.

(Chapter 8) Sigh... I'm coming to terms with the actual premise of this podcast. Caitlin is still begrudging. I guess my fantasy was that at this point she would be all in on the Duneiverse. Alas, reality. I really freaking liked this chapter! Such tension! But I think a lot of the drama I am perceiving comes from the fact that I have read the book before and I know what they are foreshadowing. The grand tragedy you guys! Caitlin ain't feeling it. Jessica and Yueh have good talks about their feels and Yueh is super worried he is going to be found out as the traitor. How can you not find that compelling?! What is wrong with her?! (chapters 5 &6) Well well well... Looks like Caitlin was kinda interested in these two "chapters". As for me, I had really enjoyed these pages. Paul talks to Dr. Yueh, whom we have been assured is his family's betrayer, and also (dun dun duuuun!) Paul's Dad DUKE LETO! Lots of politics and planning. And sandworms, and talkin bout Fremen! And we also digress about some stuff I don't remember. If you want to contact us and rap about Dune or whatever, email us at dunegirlfriend@gmail.com or leave us a message at anchor.fm/sean-calhoun (figure that out yourself I don't know how to do it cause I've never tried) or just hit me up on instagram at @sean.archer.calhoun.
