This special edition of Late Night Health takes you deep beneath the surface—literally and emotionally—as we spotlight one of the greatest natural wonders on Earth: Australia's Great Barrier Reef. Host Mark Alyn is joined by Natalie Smith, a senior marine biologist and reef guide with GBR Biology, and Mark Olsen, CEO of Tourism Tropical North Queensland. Together, they unveil not just the reef's jaw-dropping beauty and scale—it's 1,400 miles long and visible from space—but also its urgent need for our help. In this powerful conversation, you'll discover: • Why the Great Barrier Reef is considered the “beating heart of the ocean.” • The real and growing threats of climate change, overfishing, pollution, and coral disease. • How everyday travelers can actively contribute to reef conservation efforts while visiting. • Why tourism is not a threat, but a critical part of saving the reef. • An innovative grassroots campaign to give the reef a Lifetime Achievement Award—the first ever granted to a non-human entity.

Here's your chance to be inspired and after hearing from those who know, become an anti-nuclear campaigner enabling you to talk with others about the myths and weaknesses of the poorly thought-through idea the Liberal-National Party Coalition has for using nuclear energy to power Australia. First, you should listen to/watch the recent virtual event - "Don't nuke the climate: How to stop Dutton's nuclear power reactors" - take a close look at the "Don't nuke the climate" web page and then study the "Friends of the Earth Australia's Nuclear-Free Campaign".
Today's we bring you nuclear news with Friends of the Earth Australia's National Nuclear-free campaigner Dr. Jim Green. We discuss Dutton's push for nuclear power in Australia; the UK nuclear power construction at Hinkley Point; the growing threat of nuclear war and the latest nuclear waste threat under AUKUS - the Australia, UK and US military pact. The Australian Naval Nuclear Power Safety Bill 2023 establishes a new regulatory framework to promote and regulate the nuclear safety of activities relating to AUKUS submarines. The framework would apply to Australian submarines and to activities related to UK/US submarines. We've learnt that it could make Australia a dumping ground of high-level military nuclear waste from the United Kingdom and United States – if laws proposed by Defence Minister Richard Marles are rushed through Parliament in the coming weeks. An Inquiry into the Australian Naval Nuclear Power Safety Bill reported on Monday 13th May and Recommendation 3 is as follows:'The Committee recommends that the Government consider amending the Bill so that a distinction is made between Australia's acceptance of low-level nuclear waste from AUKUS partners, but non-acceptance of high-level nuclear waste.' Take action now and contact your local parliamentarian to call on them to close this dangerous loophole in the legislationThe nuclear free collective have a proforma letter that you can send to your local representative: www.melbournefoe.org.au/no_aukus_intl_wasteFriends of the Earth Melbourne has a petition to sign opposing Peter Duttons plan to build large scale nuclear power plants in Victoria: www.melbournefoe.org.au/nonuclearvic_petitionThe Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Agency are considering application No A0346 by the Australian Submarine Agency to prepare a site for a prescribed radiation facility (namely a low level waste management and maintenance facility) to be known as the 'Controlled Industrial Facility' at the existing HMAS Stirling site, at Garden Island, Rockingham in Western Australia. To have your say go to https://consult.arpansa.gov.au. Esso intends to dump multiple decommissioned "topsides" from oil and gas platforms at the site, which will release a multitude of hazardous materials at the site.// Nick Chesterfield, human rights, civil resistance and environmental justice journalist and member of MEAA for Palestine, joins us to provide updates and critical analysis of domestic and international mainstream media's coverage of israel's ongoing genocide of Palestinians in Gaza. It also follows this week's galling announcement of the New York Times as the Pulitzer prize winner for international reporting in 2024 "for its wide-ranging and revelatory coverage of Hamas' lethal attack in southern Israel on October 7, Israel's intelligence failures and the Israeli military's sweeping, deadly response in Gaza.//

CLIMATE ACTION RADIO SHOW SEPTEMBER 12th 2022Produced by Vivien Langford THE DIRTY TRUTH ABOUT GREEN OPTIMISM I was alerted to the new gold rush for critical minerals by Gavin Mudd, Associate Professor in Environmental Engineering at RMIT University. We must not make the transition to renewable energy and electrifying everything without putting far more regulation on global mining. As Carlos Zorilla says from Ecuador"The voices calling for careful considerations of the impacts of a transition to ‘clean' energy are drowned by the misplaced optimism of a green future. Few are asking commonsense questions that, if not answered now could easily create a worse environmental disaster later – and even compound the climate crisis. The elephant in the room few want to acknowledge is the destruction of people and the environment that will result from the hunger for so-called green energy minerals – mainly copper, cobalt, nickel and lithium."In Chile Lithium is called the "white gold" Lithium Mining Is Leaving Chile's Indigenous Communities High and Dry (Literally) | NRDCand in Ecuador our own Gina Rinehart is determined to extract copper from a fragile mountainous cloud forest.Rinehart's Roadblock in Ecuador - Friends of the Earth Australia (foe.org.au)Meanwhile the Climate Campaigners focussed on stopping new coal exports from Australia are very grateful to the Wangan and Jagalingou people. The Adani Carmichael mine is 9 months into operation with a huge slag heap rising up off their land and underground water already being sucked out to wash the coal. But they are not lying down on the rail tracks. Their dignified year long Waddanangu Ceremony is attracting indigenous and other visitors from all over the country.W&J have shown their intent to continue the ceremony and take their land back - you can sign up as a monthly donor to keep the sacred fire burning here. Moving news from EcuadorCarlos Zorilla won the Equator prize for the protection, restoration and sustainable management of ecosystems that help mitigate greenhouse gas emissions. He speaks to us from the Cloud Forest in Ecuador where they are protecting a wonderland of biodiversity. They have made two foreign mining companies back down but now are defending their land against the ravenous appetite for critical minerals used in electric vehicles and all the machinery of the renewables transition we have to make. One of the companies HANRINE is connected to Australian Gina Rinehart. Carlos Zorrilla | The EcologistThe dirty truth about clean energy by Carlos Zorrilla — Local Futures | by Local Futures | Local Futures — Economics of Happiness | Medium Thrilling news from Colombia: New anti extractivist Government promises strong climate action. The Vice President Francia Marquez is already a veteran environmental warrior. She was awarded the "Green Nobel" Goldman Prize in 2018.Green Left Latin America expert Federico Fuentes puts a bit of a brake on Vivien's enthusiasm by explaining how difficult it is going to be. It sounded like a summit.Mining extracts gigalitres of water, leaved horrendous slag heaps and black voids. If the land rights laws lack teeth to prevent this, Coedie Mc Avoy and the Wangan and Jagalingou people are using the Human rights laws to occupy parts of their land for ceremony. Coral also talks about what she learned about the sacredness of this land. Trees where a person's placenta was buried become that person's responsibility. Imagine if all Australians were initiated into this level of care!On the eve of the anniversary a special First Nations panel was held on Wangan and Jagalingou Country to discuss the theme of resilience and reoccupation with some incredible speakers: Gwenda Stanley Gomeroi Cultural Ambassador - Tent Embassy, Josie Alec, Kuruma Marthudhunera Custodian, Burrup peninsula, DK- Fresh Water Yuggera man, Deebing creek (who have been reoccupying their homelands for 1000 days) and Wangan and Jagalingou Tribal elder Adrian Burragubba. Suzi is considered to be one of the women at the beginning of the #metoo movement. She was a key witness on a harassment trial against a popular celebrity in her home country of Australia. In 2014, she found herself in a London Court room, getting her inner warrior on in support of all women who have been victimized, by sharing her story to the world as a bad character witness in the child sexual assault trial of an international British star. We talked about that and more. Her past has been filled with challenges: self-esteem issues, she almost went bankrupt, had a dysfunctional family on both sides that involved drug and alcohol addiction and suicide. But today, Suzi is a multi-award winning film and television hair and makeup artist and an international award-winning motivational speaker. She's also the author of the upcoming book series Bare Naked and Beautiful, a live audience talk show host and MC, an educator, a facilitator, a mother, an ex-wife, a Holistic Confidence Coach, a model, and Mrs Earth Australia 2017.

September 27 marks the anniversary of the first of the British atomic tests on the mainland that began at Maralinga in 1955. On this show we look at the cultural, environmental and toxic legacy left by Britain's atomic bomb tests at Maralinga and across the country. First up we hear from Dr.Jim Green National Anti-nuclear campaginer with Friends of the Earth Australia who talks us through some details of the atomic tests and trails, the numerous botched clean-ups that have left the lands of the Maralinga Tjarutja in particular heavily contaminated. He explains the findings of a report released by the School of Earth, Atmosphere and Environment at Monash University in May 'The nature of Pu‑bearing particles from the Maralinga nuclear testing site, Australia' that warns that degrading particles remaining from the tests are still releasing plutonium into the environment and further clean-ups are required.Aunty Sue Coleman-Haseldine, Kokatha Mula Elder and President of the Australian Nuclear Free Alliance, joins us from Ceduna, South Australia to talk about the ongoing impacts that the atomic testing has had on her country, health, family and culture. She touches on some of the current threats posed by the Federal Government's proposed national nuclear waste dump at nearby Kimba and Southern Launch's rocket testing trails.Music is 'Maralinga (Rainy land)' by Paul Kelly and the Coloured Girls.

LIVE interview with Brittany Dickson: Miss Earth Australia 2020
This conversation was recorded live, in Bangalow, as the third of five live interviews as part of Resilient Byron and Renew Fest's ‘Resilience & Regeneration Roadshow' These are community forums in villages around the Byron Shire bringing people together to discuss and action how we can create resilient communities. I was so grateful to have had the chance to sit in live conversation with Richard Jones who, back in the 70s wanted to make and sell ceramics at the markets but, by his own admission “kept getting side-tracked” Those side-tracks included supporting major environmental campaigns, helping to establish Friends of the Earth Australia and Greenpeace Australia, and THEN serving in the NSW parliament for 15 years, often holding the balance of power on the cross bench and using it to negotiate to save old growth forests, create new marine parks, and protect Aboriginal rights. Some side track! Richard is an absolute joy to speak with, and you can't help but smile listening to his bubbly enthusiasm. But his quirky nature has meant that during his time in politics he was often chastised as a 'pot smoking nudist'… (I don't know about you but a pot smoking nudist seems way more relatable than most politicians we see these days!) Richard and I talk about his trips to inner space (literally, his acid trips), his reflections on politics and using his position of influence for good, and what he wants to see to create resilient communities in our local regions. Importantly, he talks about how we need to change our expectations… for example how is it that one person can own a huge block of land and do nothing with it, or expect to rent it out at a massive price? What if we use our land resources for appropriate housing or small scale agriculture, creating opportunities for agricultural jobs for young people and local food production, whilst also helping to address the issues of housing security and isolation? Richard's zest for life is infectious, and I think you'll really enjoy hearing his perspectives and reflections on life. You'll also be pleased to know that Richard now has come full circle and makes and sells ceramics at the markets, under the banner Rainforest Ceramics, with a portion of all sales going to rainforest conservation. Please enjoy this conversation from the Bangalow leg of the Resilience & Regeneration Roadshow, with Richard Jones.

Big profits for agribusiness & military are recklessly risking the spread of a new GMO technology called Gene Drives around the world, regardless of their currently largely unknown consequences. Gene drives to genetically code mice populations into extinction are set to be released in Western Australia by the CSIRO in partnership with the US Military & WA Dpt of Conservation. Meanwhile, in Africa, bio-synthetic research organisations also funded by US Military & the Gates Foundation are rushing headlong into their own proposed field studies in two villages in Burkina Faso, in the attempt to engineer gene drive mosquitoes But grassroots farmers and environmentalists on the ground are asking, does all the hype around the conservation and health benefits of gene drives essentially amount to a stealth way to introduce this new - and profoundly dodgy sounding GMO technology - with disingenuous white saviourism and greenwashing?Guests: Lousie Sales (Friends of the Earth Australia, Emerging Tech campaign); Mariann Bassey Orovwuje (Friends of the Earth Africa & the Alliance for Food Sovereignty Africa); Zahra Moloo, (A Question of Consent documentary).Earth Matters #1182 was produced by Nicky Stott.(This 60min podcast was originally broadcast in a 2 part episode)

Pesticides are one of the most prevalent pollutants in our waterways and scientific studies show that minute amounts of some of the most commonly used chemicals can pose serious dangers to the health of people and the environment. In Australia, very little is being done to detect and prevent contamination of waterways. In fact the Government is allowing importation and use of chemicals that have been banned in their country of origin. On the 27th of September Friends of the Earth Australia released a report titled Pesticides in Australian Waterways Overview - "A Jigsaw with A Billion Missing Pieces" - a culmination of years of research and mapping of information by expert Anthony Amis.
