The EPA designated two locations for sorting and processing locations for hazardous debris from the Palisades and Eaton Fires. Residents in both areas are concerned. We must rethink city planning and development following the LA fires, says UCLA Professor Alex Hall, who advises building homes away from wildlands. Critics review the latest film releases: “Dog Man,” “Companion,” “Love Me,” and “Liza: A Truly Terrific Absolutely True Story.” Eat out to support restaurants that lost business due to the Palisades Fire. Evan Kleiman shares recommendations for west side eateries participating in DineLA, which is happening now. Using film, models, music, and costumes, artist and futurist Liam Young envisions a world where everyone on earth lives together in a single city.

In this conversation, Steve, Varsha, and Jarrod discuss volume three of Alan Moore's Swamp Thing. They explore the episodic nature of the storyline and the lack of a cohesive narrative. They also discuss the unresolved plotlines, such as the nuclear man and the vampires, and speculate on whether they will be revisited in future volumes. The conversation delves into the social commentary present in the stories, including themes of toxic waste, cruelty among children, and men's attitudes towards women. The panel also highlights the effective use of imagery, such as the birthing scene and the wolf emerging from a character's body. In this conversation, the hosts discuss various themes and elements of the Swamp Thing Volume 3 comic series by Alan Moore. They explore the symbolism and social commentary present in the story, particularly in relation to gender roles and racial issues. They also touch on the introduction of the character John Constantine and the impressive page layouts and artwork. Authorities in India have removed four decades' worth of toxic waste from a chemical factory that saw one of the deadliest gas leaks in history. In December 1984, thousands of people were killed from a gas leak at a US-owned Union Carbide pesticide factory in the country's central city of Bhopal. As a result, today thousands of survivors and their children are still battling with chronic health issues.
Forty years and one month after a deadly gas leak at a pesticide plant killed thousands in Bhopal, India, authorities say the last remaining toxic waste has been removed from the site. Activists say not enough measures are being taken to protect the environment and the population. Four decades after one of the world's worst industrial disasters, new generations of people are still grappling with its fallout and are demanding justice. Our correspondents report.
From the BBC World Service: Authorities in India have removed hundreds of tons of toxic waste from an Indian chemical factory that witnessed one of the world’s deadliest gas leaks four decades ago. Locals have long-complained of people getting sick due to groundwater contamination. Plus, Russian gas has stopped flowing to EU states from Ukraine. And “The Lehman Trilogy” has kept theater audiences gripped for more than a decade.

It's an environmental tragedy with ongoing consequences in Ivory Coast. Back in 2006, the company Trafigura wanted to get rid of 500 cubic metres of toxic waste from the refining of petroleum products stored on its cargo ship Probo Koala. After three countries refused the ship, it finally unloaded its cargo in Ivory Coast after four months at sea. With the approval of the authorities, a local company took charge of dumping the toxic waste around Abidjan, impacting least 100,000 residents and causing several deaths. Eighteen years on, many are still fighting for justice. FRANCE 24's Julia Guggenheim, Damien Koffi, Flore Monteau and Tom Canetti report, with Lauren Bain.

It's expensive to follow complex disposal protocols for construction waste that can often contain toxins. It's a lot less expensive to find someone willing or desperate enough to simply allow waste to be dumped directly onto their land, with no regard for the health and environmental impacts. An Indigenous community in Kanasatake has dealt with this problem for years. Until some community members banded together, at personal risk, to get the story out there and force the government to take action. This week, the government finally did.GUEST: Chris Curtis, investigative journalist, co-founder of The Rover(NOTE: Nexus, a company named by reporters covering this story, has denied their role in a comment to La Presse: The company says it is only responsible for the soil transportation component and assures that it "has not at any time dumped soil into the Ottawa River." It assures that it "maintains a buffer strip between the natural environments and the deposit site" and reiterates that its "commitment to environmental protection remains unwavering”) We love feedback at The Big Story, as well as suggestions for future episodes. Superfund sites are some of the most polluted areas in the country, containing highly toxic waste such as asbestos, lead, and dioxin. Cleaning them up, which follows a systematic, science-based process as required by law, can take decades. There are more than 1,300 of these sites across the US, from Florida's Panhandle to the banks of the Rio Grande in New Mexico. They're found in nearly every state, often near residential areas. The EPA estimates that 78 million people live within three miles of a Superfund site—nearly 1 in 4 Americans. But these waste dumps face a growing threat: the worsening effects of climate change. The EPA has determined that more than 300 Superfund sites are at risk of flooding. The actual number of flood-prone sites, however, may be more than twice that amount, according to a 2021 Government Accountability Office report. Floodwaters can move toxic waste into neighboring communities, which threatens drinking water, agriculture, and broader ecosystem health.Read more at sciencefriday.comTranscripts for each segment will be available after the show airs on sciencefriday.com. U.S. environmental regulators said containing toxic waste at a former aluminum smelter in Columbia Falls remains the best plan to protect the environment and human health.
In a coordinated effort between several federal and local government agencies and private contractors, more than 400,000 tons of toxic and hazards waste are planning to be removed from Lahaina and transported to the temporary debris storage site in Olowalu. The toxic and hazardous waste includes high levels of household waste, asbestos, arsenic, lead, and other toxins. Meanwhile an emergency declaration remains active which allows for side-setting and ignoring various federal, state, city laws and ordinances as part of toxic and hazardous waste removal efforts and any future development to rebuild Lahaina. Excluded or marginalized from the any of the actions, from waste removal and storage which would desecrate sacred sites, to the planned development, which will recolonize Lahaina, are some of the lineal descendants and other Kanaka maoli working to defend and stop the harm to Mother Earth in the Hawaiian Nation. The locations of airports, polluting factories and incinerators, and other environmental hazards in disadvantaged or predominantly minority communities isn't an accident, and it's not fair. In a changing world and climate, ensuring transparency, fairness, clean water and air, and a safe environment for all is more important than ever.
