Kate Wilkiinson returns to talk about the *most* John Waters movie ever made, his 1974 cult classic that puts his favorite obsessions of crime, fame and grotesque glamour center stage. Is there anything more lovable than a hideous Baltimore accent? Can anyone deny the sex appeal of Edith Massey sewn into a tight leather S & M outfit? And is there something about all this that's weirdly wholesome? 1974 was a landmark year for film, a convergence of exciting international cinema and the original voices of New Hollywood that still resonates 50 years later. In our new series we invite a different guest for each episode to choose a 1974 movie to talk about, ranging from giant blockbusters to minor cult curios and everything else in between. This month, movies have been gay to a variety of extremities with no shortage of themes of “suppression”. Well we're throwing suppression out the window as well as anything having anything to do with polite society because we're finally getting to a John Water's film. John Waters and his eccentric Baltimore circle of friends and freaks had been making movies for a handful of years already, but when he finally released his 1972 film “PINK FLAMINGOS” upon the public, it represented a distinct point in his career. It's a showcase of notorious Baltimore personalities that, quite frankly, seemed way more fun and accessible than those folks up in Andy Warhol's Factory. This movie stars Divine, Edith Massey, Mink Stole, David Lochary and Mary Vivian Pearce. John Water's philosophy of filth, as represented in Pink Flamingos, may be very unsettling at some points but you'll be laughing twice as much a you'll be wretching. It's a war of filth and the god of filth is Babs aka Divine. Can try hard haters, The Marbles, even hope to out-filth the Queen? If you're not a very political person and you're looking from some ideology then look no further than this movie. We watched John Waters' magnum opus "Female Trouble" and there's gonna be hell to pay if we don't get them cha-cha heels! John Waters is being hailed as the Pope of Trash and if you weren't sure why, go watch this movie. Dawn Davenport (Divine) is a thief and a sh!t kicker and she wants to be famous. I mean did this movie predict social media fame culture? Dawn as played by John's muse Divine is the ultimate bad girl and we as the audience get to track her journey from surley school girl to working single mom and finally to the worlds most glamorous criminal. Don't worry though, Dawn gets hers and goodness prevails in the end. Along for the ride are the usual Dreamland favorites, Mink Stole, David Lochary, Mary Vivian Pierce and of course Aunt Ida herself the incomprable Edith Massey.  Aunt Ida was the first voice ever heard on this podcast and we couldn't have said it better ourselves... "The world of othe heterosexual is a sick and boring life." The World's Worst Wireless Show”.

"I look into my future and all I see is a long, dark hallway... and no exits." We watched Polyester (1981) with the hilarious Drew Droege and we're ready to eat an entire cake in one sitting. The legendary John Waters takes us on a melodramatic trip through the suburbs by way of the famous "Women's Pictures" directed by Douglas Sirk.  We take a peek behind the velvet curtains and French Provincial decor of the 'burbs with Divine, who gives a stellar performance as Francine Fishpaw, the put upon wife of a filandering pornographer, mother of juvenile delinquents and daughter of a social climbing snob. Francine's oversensitive nose plays a key role in her already fragile mental state and the gimmick of Odorama was developed for the original screenings. Where else but a John Waters picture could you get a scratch-and-sniff card with such fragrances as Roses, Flatulence, Gasoline and New car smell? Polyester may have been Waters' first foray into "mainstream cinema" but all his usuals are there; Mink Stole as the sass-mouth other woman, Edith Massey as Francine's nouveau riche former housekeeper, and Jean Hill as a tire biting gospel singer. We can't forget the absolute dreamboat Tab Hunter as sleazy lothario Todd Tomorrow. Polyester is as tacky as late '70s/early '80s houshold decor and we can't get enough of it. Dennis connects via Zoom with actor-writer-performance artist John Fleck whose musical satire It's Alive, It's ALIVE! is showing at the Odyssey Theatre in Los Angeles through March 20. John talks about the show's central idea; that COVID is here to save us, not hurt us, where the original idea came from and where he got the inflatable COVID headress he wears through much of the show. He also recalls his experience, along with Tim Miller, Karen Finley, Tim Miller and Holly Hughes, as one of the NEA Four, the four artists who had received grants from the National Endowment of the Arts and whose grants were challenged by conservatives like Jesse Helms and others and whose case went all the way to Supreme Court. He talks about how the notoriety led to his first TV job, as a gay secretary in Steven Bochco's Murder One and how he regrets not being present at the Supreme Court hearing because he was working on TV show. John also recalls his early days in Los Angeles in the 1970's, the "radical change" he made that brought him here and opening for Edith Massey, John Waters' Egg Lady, at the One Way punk bar in Silverlake in 1983. Other topics include: embracing imperfection, how having his own shows makes the Hollywood acting hustle less soul-crushing, being an "age pioneer" at 71, the torture and glory of doing alien makeup for multiple Star Trek series and most recently Orville, appearing on projects like Tales of the City, Weeds, Seinfeld, Waterworld and the upcoming Tina Town, vamping in the dark when the power went out during a performance, and the late, great screenwriter who always came to his shows.

John Waters - Examining the Genre-Bending & Culture-Crashing Art of a Filth Icon Has there ever been a figure in popular (or even underground) culture quite like Baltimore's John Waters? I would argue that Mr. Waters is a unique and essential artist in the history of American Cinema. From his early days as an underground filmmaker with such classics as Multiple Maniacs (1970), Female Trouble (1974), and - of course - 1972's Pink Flamingos, thru his mainstream breakthroughs, including Hairspray (1988), Cry-Baby (1990), and Serial Mom (1994), Waters  - over a period of 50 years - has been a truly visionary artist. These are not easy films to watch, but they were never meant to be. Waters' work has always been a kind of litmus test determining "squareness", hypocrisy, and narrow-mindedness. If you have a problem with Waters, then most likely your an uptight prick. John Waters - along with a loyal production crew (Pat Moran, Vincent Peranio, Van Smith) and stable of actors (Mink Stole, David Lochary, Edith Massey, and - later - Ricki Lake, Patty Hearst, Traci Lords) defined the "Midnight Movie" and subversive cinema. All of this was made possible through Waters' culture-challenging attack and his collaboration with the iconic Drag Queen, Harris Glenn Milstead, better known as Divine (1945-1988). A fantastic documentary - I Am Divine - profiles the life and times of the great performer. This was a lot of fun. Take a listen and let us know what you think. Questions, Comments, Complaints, & Suggestions can be directed to gondoramos@yahoo.com. Many Thanks.

Edith Massey is a nuance in and of herself. A quintessential best supporting actress in the world of John Waters, her deliriously batty, busty, forward-thinking Aunt Ida in "Female Trouble" is a queen ahead of her time. Johnny from the podcast "That's Spooky" joins me this week to sing the praises of Massey's inherent kindness, as well as her dental journey. Plus: John Waters' perfectionism, Mink Stole's gravitas, Katya's pitch perfect ode to Waters on Drag Race, cataloging, finding community through podcasting, a moment of exuberance from a wiener dog, a vague trauma memory of Polyester, some love for Mink Stole and spiders all over our tits. John Waters has been making edgy, intelligent, and unique films since before Matt and Ryan were born. While perhaps a bit difficult to love, his uncompromising films still manage to offend, entertain, and provoke decades after their creation. We’re celebrating this true American treasure this week with a double feature of Desperate Living (1977) and Hairspray (1988). Join us as we talk about Edith Massey’s punctuality, Bea Arthur in Gravity, and the TV show Dinosaurs (like, for a long time) this week on Ex Rated Movies!

¡¡Pasen y escuchen!!
