It's building relationships with individuals from those cultures. 09:21 Lesson 2: You're not getting a cultural report card. 11:38 Lesson 3: Don't judge cultural experiences by whether you like them. Judge them by whether they make you grow. 16:11 Lesson 4: There are no wasted experiences. 20:42 Lesson 5: Think about the messages you are sending, and whether they facilitate trust. 25:08 Lesson 6: Let yourself be ambivalent. 28:06 Lesson 7: Let your light shine - and help others shine their light, too. 32:01 Lesson 8: Prioritize taking care of yourself. 35:16 Lesson 9: When networking, think about making connections with people, not just obtaining business cards or sharing digital details. 39:05 Lesson 10: It is truly a small world, so guard your reputation and close doors gently, rather than burning bridges. 42:28

In a candid heart-to-heart, we unpack the laughter-laced struggles of our addiction journeys and the pivotal role of community in our transformation. This episode isn't just about our hardships; it's a story of the bonds that held us together and the powerful shift from isolation to inclusion in the fight against substance abuse. As we lay bare our experiences, from Ian's custody battles to my penchant for leaving a trail of cigarette burns, we navigate the darker and lighter moments with equal honesty. We talk about our group, the Bushwhackers, and how the support systems we found helped us claw back trust, relationships, and a sense of self. The conversation extends to discussing the chilling rise of powerful drugs like fentanyl, the legal system's grappling with substance use, and our personal fears as parents, emphasizing the life-or-death importance of a solid support network.Wrapping up with a heartfelt message of hope, we stress the healing potential when one addict extends a hand to another. Today's guests's name is Nermine, but by the time you finish this episode, you may just think of her as Wonder Woman. At the age of 22, Nermine, born, raised, and educated first in Alexandria, Egypt, then in Cairo, achieved the rare honor of being appointed a female Egyptian diplomat. 10 years into her service, she fell in love with an American diplomat. When she chose to marry him, she gave up her post, but not her position in the diplomatic corp. Rather, Nermine now travels the world with her husband and two daughters perfecting and practicing the art of forging bonds, in large part through “culinary diplomacy”. She's sharing with us her recipe for Pecan Date Molasses bars, which she created “to declare a state of harmony and self-reconciliation that [she] reached as an immigrant and citizen of the world.” ALSO! Friday, Nermine will share with us how she leveraged her Arabic, knowledge of Middle Eastern culture, diplomatic skills, and empathy as a woman to embark on an incredible project of empowerment for Syrian refuge women. This project brought Nermine a profound appreciation for the power of food stories and reconnected her personally to her Egyptian roots.
