Reading The Custom of the Country this winter has felt like stepping into the most lush, dramatic, and marathon-worthy period piece–so today we're sharing some of our favorite period dramas and pairing them with excellent books for cozy winter reading. We discuss the appeal of watching historical fiction versus reading it, the throughline from reading Dear America books to watching Downton Abbey as a comfort show, and the complex nature of colorblind casting. We hope you find a new, or old, TV series or novel to enjoy after listening to today's episode. PS: if you hear some odd background noises in this episode, just imagine little toddler feet stomping above Chelsey's head! Get ready for your TBR pile to actually topple over as we discuss a truly abundant season of publishing and books. The fall publishing calendar has a lot of hype-worthy titles, and in today's episode you'll hear our pared down lists (it was a struggle!) of excellent fall fiction due to hit shelves soon. This includes big books from BIG authors, intriguing titles from small indie presses, and a smattering of assorted fiction and non-fiction we think you'll love. Plus, each title we preview in today's episode is perfectly paired with a backlist book for your consideration, giving us the option to explore additional titles while we wait for our library holds and pre-orders to come in. If you love the work of public scholarship and the mission of Novel Pairings, we'd love for you to take a moment and share a review of the show over on Apple Podcasts. In this episode, I chat with Two Friends Books owners Monica Diodati and Rachel Stuckey-Slaton about Bentonville, Arkansas, local authors, books they love, and what they learned about bookselling during the pandemic. After spending too much time lamenting the lack of an independent bookstore in Bentonville, friends Monica Diodati and Rachel Stuckey-Slaton resolved to launch their own. In 2018, their popup bookshop appeared at local coffee shops in the area until they moved into their very own brick and mortar shop at 8th Street Market in Downtown Bentonville. Monica and Rachel curate a selection of books from authors and publishers they love passing on to their customers. At Two Friends Books, customers can also enjoy a book with a glass of wine, beer, or coffee. The bookshop carries natural and organic wines, Airship coffee, a rotating selection of beers, and locally made baked goods. Two Friends BooksNora Goes Off Script, Annabel MonaghanA Lady's Guide to Fortune Hunting, Sophie IrwinThe Dead Romantics, Ashley PostonBraiding Sweetgrass, Robin Wall KimmererOzark Dogs, Eli CranorBooks by Donna TartBooks by Miriam ToewsOur Share of Night, Mariana EnriquezBooks by Lisa Kleypas Support the showThe Bookshop PodcastMandy Jackson-BeverlySocial Media Links

It's our 100th episode, readers! Thank you, thank you, thank you for coming along with us on this nerdy creative endeavor. We are immensely grateful for those of you who listen to the podcast, share it with friends, and support us on Patreon. Today, we are talking about Persuasion by Jane Austen, often described as Austen's most autumnal work. Persuasion is a deeply romantic novel about longing, loss, and found family. We discuss Anne as an Austen heroine, and Wentworth as her perfect match. We discuss coming of age, family strains, and other exceedingly modern themes. Finally, of course we could not stop ourselves from diving into the theme of the season: adaptation, and why we think there is a resurgence of interest in this story right now. About Sophie Irwin: Sophie has spent years immersed in the study of historical fiction, from a dissertation on why Georgette Heyer helped win World War Two, to time spent in dusty stacks and old tomes doing detailed period research when writing this book. Her love and passion for historical fiction bring a breath of fresh air and a contemporary energy to the genre. Her debut novel is A Lady's Guide to Fortune-Hunting and joining me today to talk about that, and so much more, is author Sophie Irwin. In this episode, Mike and Sophie discuss: Why her writing starts with consuming stories across multiple genres and media platforms. The draw of historical fiction (and how it is similar to fantasy). Building an immersive world without overwhelming your readers. Embracing and feeding your inner selves - past, present, and future. Finding a community within the solitary process of writing. Key Takeaways: Historical fiction has a texture that is rich and gorgeous in a way that is different from modern reality. Turn the trope on its head and consider giving your protagonist a reason that isn't altruistic and is honest about their drive. For your character to break the rules, you have to establish what they are. In historical fiction, there's different rules depending on the time and location of your setting. Tell the story you want to tell and the rest will work itself out. Your first draft is going to be bad and you're going to hate it (and maybe hate yourself). Push through that. In this episode, I chat with Sophie Irwin about her new novel, A Ladies Guide To Fortune Hunting, women finding autonomy in Regency England, character arcs, and Bridgerton!Sophie Irwin grew up in Dorset before moving to south London after university. She spent several years working as an assistant editor before going freelance.Sophie has spent years immersed in the study of historical fiction, from a dissertation on why Georgette Heyer helped win World War Two to time spent in dusty stacks and old tomes doing detailed period research when writing her debut novel A Lady's Guide to Fortune Hunting. Her love and passion for historical fiction bring a breath of fresh air and contemporary energy to the genre. Sophie hopes to transport readers to Regency London, where ballrooms are more like battlegrounds.Sophie IrwinA Lady's Guide To Fortune Hunting, Sophie IrwinRed, White, and Royal Blue, Casey McQuistonSupport the show

WHEW WE HAD A LOT TO SAY. This week, we're discussing lesbian romance novels and, unfortunately, why we just don't like a lot of the ones we've read. Amelia discusses gender exploration and lesbian relationships with gay men. Sarah laments the lack of butches and why Regency era women should be allowed to do rampant infidelity. We both spend a long, long time trying to figure out why the sex is so boring. Afterwards when Sarah was editing the episode, Amelia asked her to try to make us not sound like evil dark sex perverts. This feat that proved to be absolutely impossible. Media discussed: Olivia Waite's Feminine Pursuits series which includesThe Lady's Guide to Celestial MechanicsThe Care and Feeding of Waspish WidowsThe Hellion's WaltzThe Perks of Loving a Wallflower by Erica Ridley A Proper English by KJ Charles The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet by Becky ChambersGideon the Ninth by Tamsyn Muir The Unspoken Name by A.K. LarkwoodThe Thousand Names by Django Wexler A Little Light Mischief by Cat Sebastian How to Find a Princess by Alyssa Cole*(non-ff media)Think of England by KJ CharlesThe Simple Art of Fortune Hunting by KJ CharlesAny Old Diamonds by KJ Charles*Note from Sarah: I mentioned at the beginning of this episode that I read this book, and then proceeded to say nothing about it. Since I spoke pretty disparagingly of contemporary lesbian romance in this, I wanted to clarify that while I still didn't connect with the central romance of this book, I enjoyed reading the story overall and would recommend it to people looking for a modern twist on a princess-bodyguard story starring two Black woman, a fictional country, a critique of the idea of monarchy while still enjoying some of the trappings, and a fun cast of main and side characters.

In the final episode of 2021, Sarah and Amelia dig through their year's worth of reading materials in a ruthless gladiatorial death match of arbitrary categories and favoritism (but like, in a chill way). Triumphs are hard-won, emotional depths are plumbed, and favors are ruthlessly extorted under false pretenses and then upheld as law.
