This month, we discuss adventure stories, one of the prompts on the Books and Bites Bingo Reading Challenge. Choose your own adventure, whether it's with a group of teens on a road trip, on top of Mount Everest, or on a pirate ship! Jacqueline's PickJacqueline enjoyed Five Survive by New York Times bestselling author Holly Jackson. Red Kenny is on a road trip for spring break with five friends. When their RV breaks down in the middle of nowhere with no cell service, they soon realize this is no accident. They have been trapped by someone out there in the dark, someone who clearly wants one of them dead. With eight hours until dawn, the six friends must escape, or figure out which of them is the target.Pairing: No-Bake Peanut Butter Protein Cookies, a yummy road-trip treat.Michael's PickMichael took a trip to Mount Everest with Jon Krakauer's nonfiction book, Into Thin Air. Working for Outside magazine, Krakauer was given the opportunity to ascend Mount Everest, the tallest mountain in the world, during the 1996 climbing season on Rob Hall's team, Hall being one of the most experienced and respected climbers and guides in the world. They were about to witness one of the deadliest days in the mountain's history. A storm rolled in on summit day that ultimately left eight people dead. This is Krakauer's personal account of that expedition, relying on interviews with others to corroborate his experiences and provide perspective.Pairing: A hot cup of Masala Chai.Carrie's PickCarrie went on an adventure with The Lady's Guide to Petticoats and Piracy by Mackenzi Lee, a YA novel that takes place in the 18th century. Felicity Montague wants to become a doctor, but the English and Scottish hospital boards she appeals to for apprenticeship turn her down because of her gender. When she learns that one of her medical idols is about to marry her childhood best friend and may need an assistant, she sets out for Germany to plead her case. What follows is a quest with two other young women involving pirates, a voyage to Algeria, and (spoiler alert!) sea monsters.Pairing: Shakshouka, an Algerian dish of eggs poached in a sauce of tomatoes, bell peppers, jalapeno, onion, and spices. It's the anglophilia arc!  We're starting on a series of books which are fantasy British - we set out initially to critique teaboo tendencies in sf but we accidentally picked a bunch of good and fun books, of which this is one.  Or maybe we're both just weak to this stuff, having been raised on a diet of Terry Pratchett. This specific example involves charming old ladies, Victorian drug labs and the requisite terrible mom, and is very funny.

This episode will tell the stories of Caroline Herschel and Mary Somerville. It features an interview with Olivia Waite, who combines the two historic women in her protagonist the regency, sapphic, romance novel The Lady's Guide to Celestial Mechanics. Caroline Herschel was the first woman to discover a comet and artfully navigated the scientific world of the 18th and early 19th century to become one of the first paid women astronomers. Mary Somerville was potentially the most successful scientific writer of all time. Self-taught and charming, she grasped complex concepts in all physical sciences and communicated them to the world in her many books. But learning about the lives of these scientific women does not provide understanding of what their life felt like. Often, women who contributed to science are left out of history or parts of their identity have been erased. To rectify this gap in the traditional historical narrative, historical fiction and romance writers depict vivid and realistic stories of the lives that rarely make history books. In her interview, she shares how she researches and writes historical romance and the importance of this genre to showcase LGBTQ+ identities.

About Sophie Irwin: Sophie has spent years immersed in the study of historical fiction, from a dissertation on why Georgette Heyer helped win World War Two, to time spent in dusty stacks and old tomes doing detailed period research when writing this book.  Her love and passion for historical fiction bring a breath of fresh air and a contemporary energy to the genre. Her debut novel is A Lady's Guide to Fortune-Hunting and joining me today to talk about that, and so much more, is author Sophie Irwin.  In this episode, Mike and Sophie discuss:  Why her writing starts with consuming stories across multiple genres and media platforms.  The draw of historical fiction (and how it is similar to fantasy).  Building an immersive world without overwhelming your readers.  Embracing and feeding your inner selves - past, present, and future.  Finding a community within the solitary process of writing.  Key Takeaways:  Historical fiction has a texture that is rich and gorgeous in a way that is different from modern reality.  Turn the trope on its head and consider giving your protagonist a reason that isn't altruistic and is honest about their drive.  For your character to break the rules, you have to establish what they are. In historical fiction, there's different rules depending on the time and location of your setting. Tell the story you want to tell and the rest will work itself out.  Your first draft is going to be bad and you're going to hate it (and maybe hate yourself). Push through that. The second draft is for making the writing better.  "You have to try and retain some of that childlike ability to try and fail and carry on anyway." – Sophie Irwin Buy A Lady's Guide to Fortune-Hunting: Amazon: https://amzn.to/3AI8aWW Bookshop.org: https://bookshop.org/a/54587/9780593491348 Connect with Sophie Irwin:  Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/sophie.irwin/  Twitter: https://twitter.com/SophieHIrwin  Connect with Mike Carlon: Website: https://uncorkingastory.com/ Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCSvS4fuG3L1JMZeOyHvfk_g Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/uncorkingastory/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/uncorkingastory Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/uncorkingastory LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/uncorking-a-story/

Deanna Tikhonov is a Women's Health NP, but it took her a couple years to decide that's where her passion was and take the steps to get there. As a nursing student, she hated her med/surg rotation, but later attributed that to working with preceptors that were burnt out, overworked and didn't like having students. After graduating as an RN, it took her several months, and over 30 applications, to find a job on a med/surg unit. She said that she ended up loving med/surg because of the supportive nurses that she worked with there. Since that experience as a nursing student, Deanna has become a patient and supportive mentor for the students that she works with. Deanna discusses how it is important for nurses to be honest with themselves about their feelings of working with students, not everyone likes to teach.Deanna decided that women deserved more than a 15 minute office visit to help them with their issues, so decided to start educating women about how to help themselves by changing their lifestyles. She believes that changes to our diet can impact our hormones, leading to less negative symptoms and a more balanced hormone response. She started doing YouTube videos and education on IG as The Lady's Guide, and offers simple, attainable goals to help us with many of our PMS symptoms and women's health. About Deanna TikhonovDeanna Tikhonov is a Women's Health Nurse Practitioner and has been practicing at public clinics and private practices in New Jersey since graduating from the University of Pennsylvania in 2014. Prior to that, she worked as an RN on a Med/Surg Unit.Through her time as a clinician, she noticed a gap in what women are taught about their bodies and women's health topics. So she founded The Lady's Guide, an educational, cross-media platform where she discusses common women's health topics from knowing your birth control options to how to empower yourself during your GYN exam. Deanna offers virtual coaching sessions teaching women how to rebalance their hormones and improve their fertility without the use of medications but through lifestyle changes. Lastly, Deanna recently became a 200hr certified Yoga Teacher with an additional Prenatal Yoga certification, gaining more knowledge on the mind/body connection. In her spare time, she enjoys spending time with her husband and dog on hikes, traveling around the world, and practicing yoga.Learn more about supporting the Don't Eat Your Young Podcast with a membership — visit Don't Eat Your Young's membership page!Links & Notes Follow @_theladysguide on Instagram Subscribe to The Lady's Guide on YouTube 00:00 - Welcome to Don't Eat Your Young 00:25 - Deanna Tikhonov 01:22 - Deanna's Nursing Journey 03:41 - Nurses v.
