But when the Pharisees saw it, they said to him, “Look, your disciples are doing what is not lawful to do on the sabbath.” He said to them, “Have you not read what David did, when he was hungry, and those who were with him: how he entered the house of God and ate the bread of the Presence, which it was not lawful for him to eat nor for those who were with him, but only for the priests? Or have you not read in the law how on the sabbath the priests in the temple profane the sabbath, and are guiltless? I tell you, something greater than the temple is here. And if you had known what this means, ‘I desire mercy, and not sacrifice,' you would not have condemned the guiltless. For the Son of man is lord of the sabbath.”The Word of the LordThanks Be to GodThe Apostles' CreedI believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth;I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead.I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. ExamenIn God's presence, think through the day ahead:the work you will do, the people you will encounter, the dangers or uncertainties you face, the possibilities for joy and acts of kindness, any particular resolutions you need to renew, consider what might draw you from the love of God and neighbor, the opportunities you will have to know and serve God and to grow in virtue, remember those closest to you and all for whom you have agreed to pray, ask God's blessings, guidance, and strength in all that lies before you. Gather up these thoughts and reflections in the wordsOur Savior taught us to say: The Lord's PrayerOur Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. The Collect of the DayO God, from whom all good proceeds: Grant that by your inspiration we may think those things that are right, and by your merciful guiding may do them; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. We have followed too much the devices and desires of our own hearts. We have offended against your holy laws.We have left undone those things which we ought to have done, and we have done those things which we ought not to have done; and apart from your grace, there is no health in us. O Lord, have mercy upon us. Spare all those who confess their faults. Restore all those who are penitent, according to your promises declared to all people in Christ Jesus our Lord. Alleluia.Christ being raised from the dead will never die again; *death no longer has dominion over him.The death that he died, he died to sin, once for all; *but the life he lives, he lives to God.So also consider yourselves dead to sin, *and alive to God in Jesus Christ our Lord. Psalm 40Expectans, expectaviBCP p. 640Iwaited patiently upon the Lord; *he stooped to me and heard my cry.He lifted me out of the desolate pit, out of the mire and clay; *he set my feet upon a high cliff and made my footing sure.He put a new song in my mouth,a song of praise to our God; *many shall see, and stand in awe,and put their trust in the Lord.Happy are they who trust in the Lord! *they do not resort to evil spirits or turn to false gods.Great things are they that you have done, O Lord my God!how great your wonders and your plans for us! *there is none who can be compared with you.Oh, that I could make them known and tell them! *but they are more than I can count. In sacrifice and offering you take no pleasure *(you have given me ears to hear you);Burnt-offering and sin-offering you have not required, *and so I said, “Behold, I come.In the roll of the book it is written concerning me: *‘I love to do your will, O my God;your law is deep in my heart.'”I proclaimed righteousness in the great congregation; *behold, I did not restrain my lips;and that, O Lord, you know.Your righteousness have I not hidden in my heart;I have spoken of your faithfulness and your deliverance; *I have not concealed your love and faithfulness from the great congregation. You are the Lord;do not withhold your compassion from me; *let your love and your faithfulness keep me safe for ever,For innumerable troubles have crowded upon me;my sins have overtaken me, and I cannot see; *they are more in number than the hairs of my head, and my heart fails me.Be pleased, O Lord, to deliver me; *O Lord, make haste to help me.Let them be ashamed and altogether dismayedwho seek after my life to destroy it; *let them draw back and be disgraced who take pleasure in my misfortune.Let those who say “Aha!” and gloat over me be confounded, *because they are ashamed.Let all who seek you rejoice in you and be glad; *let those who love your salvation continually say,“Great is the Lord!”Though I am poor and afflicted, *the Lord will have regard for me.You are my helper and my deliverer; *do not tarry, O my God. Seven days you shall eat unleavened bread, as I commanded you, at the time appointed in the month of Abib; for in the month of Abib you came out from Egypt. All that first opens the womb is mine, all your male livestock, the firstborn of cow and sheep. The firstborn of a donkey you shall redeem with a lamb, or if you will not redeem it you shall break its neck. All the firstborn of your sons you shall redeem. No one shall appear before me empty-handed. Six days you shall work, but on the seventh day you shall rest; even in plowing time and in harvest time you shall rest. You shall observe the festival of weeks, the first fruits of wheat harvest, and the festival of ingathering at the turn of the year. Three times in the year all your males shall appear before the Lord God, the God of Israel. For I will cast out nations before you, and enlarge your borders; no one shall covet your land when you go up to appear before the Lord your God three times in the year. You shall not offer the blood of my sacrifice with leaven, and the sacrifice of the festival of the passover shall not be left until the morning. The best of the first fruits of your ground you shall bring to the house of the Lord your God. You shall not boil a kid in its mother's milk. The Lord said to Moses: Write these words; in accordance with these words I have made a covenant with you and with Israel. He was there with the Lord forty days and forty nights; he neither ate bread nor drank water. And he wrote on the tablets the words of the covenant, the ten commandments. Moses came down from Mount Sinai. As he came down from the mountain with the two tablets of the covenant in his hand, Moses did not know that the skin of his face shone because he had been talking with God. When Aaron and all the Israelites saw Moses, the skin of his face was shining, and they were afraid to come near him. But Moses called to them; and Aaron and all the leaders of the congregation returned to him, and Moses spoke with them. Afterward all the Israelites came near, and he gave them in commandment all that the Lord had spoken with him on Mount Sinai. When Moses had finished speaking with them, he put a veil on his face; but whenever Moses went in before the Lord to speak with him, he would take the veil off, until he came out; and when he came out, and told the Israelites what he had been commanded, the Israelites would see the face of Moses, that the skin of his face was shining; and Moses would put the veil on his face again, until he went in to speak with him.Officiant: The Word of the LordPeople: Thanks be to God. 21. You are GodTe Deum laudamusYou are God: we praise you;You are the Lord; we acclaim you;You are the eternal Father:All creation worships you.To you all angels, all the powers of heaven,Cherubim and Seraphim, sing in endless praise:Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. The glorious company of apostles praise you.The noble fellowship of prophets praise you.The white-robed army of martyrs praise you.Throughout the world the holy Church acclaims you;Father, of majesty unbounded, your true and only Son, worthy of all worship, and the Holy Spirit, advocate and guide. You, Christ, are the king of glory, the eternal Son of the Father. When you became man to set us freeyou did not shun the Virgin's womb. You overcame the sting of deathand opened the kingdom of heaven to all believers. You are seated at God's right hand in glory. We believe that you will come and be our judge.Come then, Lord, and help your people, bought with the price of your own blood, and bring us with your saintsto glory everlasting. Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen. 1 Thess. 3:1-13Therefore when we could bear it no longer, we decided to be left alone in Athens; and we sent Timothy, our brother and co-worker for God in proclaiming the gospel of Christ, to strengthen and encourage you for the sake of your faith, so that no one would be shaken by these persecutions. Indeed, you yourselves know that this is what we are destined for. In fact, when we were with you, we told you beforehand that we were to suffer persecution; so it turned out, as you know. For this reason, when I could bear it no longer, I sent to find out about your faith; I was afraid that somehow the tempter had tempted you and that our labor had been in vain. But Timothy has just now come to us from you, and has brought us the good news of your faith and love. He has told us also that you always remember us kindly and long to see us-- just as we long to see you. For this reason, brothers and sisters, during all our distress and persecution we have been encouraged about you through your faith. For we now live, if you continue to stand firm in the Lord. How can we thank God enough for you in return for all the joy that we feel before our God because of you? Night and day we pray most earnestly that we may see you face to face and restore whatever is lacking in your faith. Now may our God and Father himself and our Lord Jesus direct our way to you. And may the Lord make you increase and abound in love for one another and for all, just as we abound in love for you. And may he so strengthen your hearts in holiness that you may be blameless before our God and Father at the coming of our Lord Jesus with all his saints.Officiant: The Word of the LordPeople: Thanks be to God. 16. And, we pray, give us such an awareness of your mercies, that with truly thankful hearts we may show forth your praise, not only with our lips, but in our lives, by giving up our selves to your service, and by walking before you in holiness and righteousness all our days; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit, be honor and glory throughout all ages. Amen.A Prayer of St. ChrysostomAlmighty God, you have given us grace at this time with one accord to make our common supplication to you; and you have promised through your well-beloved Son that when two or three are gathered together in his Name you will be in the midst of them: Fulfill now, O Lord, our desires and petitions as may be best for us; granting us in this world knowledge of your truth, and in the age to come life everlasting. The Seven Last Words of Jesus: The Fourth Friday Lenten Season Conference Note: This audio is the fourth Friday conference within the Lenten Season. The first several media titles appear below. The Seven Last Words of Jesus: The Fourth Friday Lenten Season Conference When we say the seven last words, we mean the seven last statements of Jesus on The Cross. On Mount Sinai, the Lord gave to Moses ten words. Now, there on another hill, seven more words are given. God made Moses a meditator to receive the words. On Good Friday, God's Son gives the world seven more words. The parallelism continues. On Mount Sinai there was rolling thunder and shaking of the earth. On Good Friday, a similar thing happens. The site as we know is Calvary, the place of the new covenant. The Homily tells us more. As Jesus is on The Cross, Jesus addresses His people. The audio describes the Lord on The Cross to set the scene and to help form a mental image. These words were not given to the entire world. They were shared and heard by only a few people. The seven words should be looked at together to understand their significance. Listen to: The Seven Last Words of Jesus. Understand how these words should impact our Spiritual Life. Today is the Friday before the long Fourth of July holiday weekend and I don't know about you, but I'm ready to tune out the news and try to de-stress after the past week... year.... 5 years... You get the idea. The best medicine, they say, is laughter. So, I invited today's guest on the show because she consistently provides us with that much-needed medicine with her weekly song parodies (and occasional original composition), Lauren Mayer. She writes biting satirical lyrics and performs these parodies with a combination of news and topicality, intelligence, fun and talent. We'll start with some other news-adjacent info, and then Lauren will Zoom in... Also, a programming note: Monday is July 4th and I will be taking a holiday... but I will have a show. It's radio (or a close facsimile), and the show must go on. So on Monday, I'll do a music show, which means no YouTube or other video stream. So on Monday, listen to the audio-only show at nicolesandler.com/listen-live, on progressivevoices.com or pull up my stream the simplest way at nicolesandlerstream.com. And Happy Independence Day. Yay us!

Welcome to In Your Embrace Daily, a series of short daily reflections on the Gospels from the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite. Today's reading for the Fourth Friday of Lent is from the Holy Gospel according to John. John 11:1-45 (DRE) “Now there was a certain man sick, named Lazarus, of Bethania, of the town of Mary and Martha her sister. And Mary was she that anointed the Lord with ointment, and wiped his feet with her hair: whose brother Lazarus was sick.) His sisters therefore sent to him, saying: Lord, behold, he whom thou lovest is sick. And Jesus hearing it, said to them: This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God: that the Son of God may be glorified by it. Now Jesus loved Martha, and her sister Mary, and Lazarus. When he had heard therefore that he was sick, he still remained in the same place two days. Then after that, he said to his disciples: Let us go into Judea again. The disciples say to him: Rabbi, the Jews but now sought to stone thee: and goest thou thither again? Jesus answered: Are there not twelve hours of the day? If a man walk in the day, he stumbleth not, because he seeth the light of this world: But if he walk in the night, he stumbleth, because the light is not in him. These things he said; and after that he said to them: Lazarus our friend sleepeth; but I go that I may awake him out of sleep. His disciples therefore said: Lord, if he sleep, he shall do well. But Jesus spoke of his death; and they thought that he spoke of the repose of sleep. Then therefore Jesus said to them plainly: Lazarus is dead. And I am glad, for your sakes, that I was not there, that you may believe: but let us go to him. Thomas therefore, who is called Didymus, said to his fellow disciples: Let us also go, that we may die with him. Jesus therefore came, and found that he had been four days already in the grave. (Now Bethania was near Jerusalem, about fifteen furlongs off.) And many of the Jews were come to Martha and Mary, to comfort them concerning their brother. Martha therefore, as soon as she heard that Jesus had come, went to meet him: but Mary sat at home. Martha therefore said to Jesus: Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died. But now also I know that whatsoever thou wilt ask of God, God will give it thee. Jesus saith to her: Thy brother shall rise again. Martha saith to him: I know that he shall rise again, in the resurrection at the last day. Jesus said to her: I am the resurrection and the life: he that believeth in me, although he be dead, shall live: And every one that liveth, and believeth in me, shall not die for ever. Believest thou this? She saith to him: Yea, Lord, I have believed that thou art Christ the Son of the living God, who art come into this world. And when she had said these things, she went, and called her sister Mary secretly, saying: The master is come, and calleth for thee. She, as soon as she heard this, riseth quickly, and cometh to him. For Jesus was not yet come into the town: but he was still in that place where Martha had met him. The Jews therefore, who were with her in the house, and comforted her, when they saw Mary that she rose up speedily and went out, followed her, saying: She goeth to the grave to weep there. When Mary therefore was come where Jesus was, seeing him, she fell down at his feet, and saith to him: Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died. Jesus, therefore, when he saw her weeping, and the Jews that were come with her, weeping, groaned in the spirit, and troubled himself, And said: Where have you laid him? They say to him: Lord, come and see. And Jesus wept. The Jews therefore said: Behold how he loved him. But some of them said: Could not he that opened the eyes of the man born blind, have caused that this man should not die? Jesus therefore again groaning in himself, cometh to the sepulchre. Now it was a cave; and a stone was laid over it. Jesus saith: Take away the stone. ...” --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/in-your-embrace/message

Jenna Yokoyama is a Japanese American. She co-hosts the show Pacific Underground on KBOO in Portland, Oregon. It is heard on the FOURTH Friday of every month at 11:00 a.m. It is also on podcast via Soundcloud and iTunes. According to its website, "There are nearly 225,000 APIs in Oregon. But in one of America’s whitest states, the issues that impact us simply aren’t covered. Imagine: 225,000 stories untold. Pacific Underground is a show by Asians and Pacific Islanders (APIs) taking the mic into our own hands." Jenna covers a lot of ground in this conversation. We discuss religion, racism and the daily indignities APIs face to the social transformation underway with younger generations. She talks about the problem of the European designation “Asian” to refer to nearly half the planet as well as the necessity for APIs to unite as “Asian-Americans” for the purpose of empowerment.
In his 1959 Sermon on Gandhi, Dr. King said: “The aftermath of nonviolence is the creation of the beloved community, so that when the battle’s over, a new relationship comes into being between the oppressed and the oppressor….The way of violence leads to bitterness in the survivors and brutality in the destroyers. But, the way of non-violence leads to redemption and the creation of the beloved community.” On “The Beloved Community” we address the philosophical and spiritual foundations for non-violence, activism, political engagement and peace building. We also hear voices of those who are building the beloved community right here in Portland. The goal is to gain inspiration, solidarity, wisdom, and insight for your own activism. On this pilot edition of “The Beloved Community,” host John Shuck speaks with three activists. Each of them brings a unique voice and perspective to bringing Martin Luther King’s vision to fruition. Marianne Williamson, is a New York Times Bestselling author, lecturer, and activist. She will discuss the spiritual foundations of the Beloved Community as we discuss her latest book, Tears to Triumph: The Spiritual Journey from Suffering to Enlightenment. G. Scott Brown, is the Co-founder of the Colorado Center for Restorative Practices. He was formerly an activist for Greenpeace and now brings the principles of non-violence to all of his social justice work. He will be in Portland on August 16 th to discuss his latest book, Active Peace: A Mindful Path to a Non-Violent World. We close the hour speaking with Jenna Yokoyama. Jenna is a co-host of the KBOO program, Pacific Underground that airs every FOURTH Friday of the month at 11:00 a.m. “Pacific Underground is a show by Asians and Pacific Islanders (APIs) taking the mic into our own hands.” She will discuss the Asian-American experience in Portland including why it is problematic to use phrases such as the “Asian-American experience.”

A balance on a 'holy life' without a desire to know the God who saved you is just as unbalanced as a focus on being 'theologically accurate', but allowing your life to lapse. Derek Pulliam addresses both errors from 1 Tim. 4:16.
Do great men of God deal with the dark night of the soul ? You bet. Miguel Davilla digs into this deep and heavy topic, showing us the other side of the Christian walk. If you from depression, this message will leave you with great reason to hope. This FFF marks two years of ministry to the city of B-More.
How do we identify a Christian ? Pastor Choi delves into this topic and shows us scripture's definition of what a believer should look like (hint: it's more than John 13:34-35)
For whom did Christ die ? How are believers to rightly understand the atonement ? Why does it matter ? Derek Pulliam digs into this deep and wonderful topic and gives us more reasons to love the God of our salvation.
It's no mistake that prayer has been called the Christian's lifeline. Join us as Pastor Michael Crawford talks about this essential aspect of the Christian life.
Elder Deloatch digs into this very essential doctrine of the Christian faith, showing us both the biblical basis and the necessity of the Trinity for everyday living. Note: due to technical difficulties, the first 40 seconds of audio are 'slowed down'.
Due to technical difficulties, Pastor Steve's message didn't record properly BUT we have a message from him a few months prior that touches on this very topic. Enjoy and be blessed.
Our first FFF of 2009! Join us as Pastor Leake gives us a tour through the nature and purposes of the church. Why does the body of Christ exist ? Are you a lone-ranger Christian or connected with a local body ? Pastor Leake challenges and encourages us with this powerful message.
Our last Fourth Friday Fundamentals meeting (on the Third Friday) for the year of 2008. What is biblical faith ? Does your life demonstrate a saving faith or a faith that is name only ? Derek Pulliam brings a challenging message on the doctrine of faith in the Christian life.
Miguel Davila preaches on the doctrine of repentance. What is biblical repentance ? What is godly sorrow ? Are you sorry that you got caught and the results of sin make you feel bad or are you truly sorry because you offended God ? These and more questions are answered in this challenging message.
Derek Pulliam takes us through the doctrine of perseverance and the implications for all believers.
Regeneration. Miguel Davila takes us through Ezekiel 36. For what purpose does God save us ? How does He save us ? Can we lose our salvation ? Can we continue in sin ? Miguel answers these questions and others.
What's So Great About the Doctrine of Election? Derek Pulliam digs deep into the doctrine of election and the implications of it for the Christian life in Ephesians 1.
Justification. Derek Pulliam drives home the deep truth of the doctrine of justification and its' implications for the believer as well as how it and other doctrines should be approached.
Adoption. Pastor Charlie Baile of Shady Grove Presbyterian Church digs deep into the issue of the doctrine of Adoption and its' comfort to the Christian.
The Solution to the Problem. Pastor Tony Arnold brings to the forefront the solution to the problem of God's Holiness and man's sinfulness - the gospel.
The Problem God's Holiness Presents for Man's sinfulness. Skillfully, and in great detail, Pastor Novell Deloatch articulates the implications of God's Holiness for a sinful humanity.
The Sinfulness of Man. Miguel Davilla takes us through a look at the problem of man's sinfulness according to scripture.
The Holiness of God. Derek Pulliam leads us through a description of God's holiness from Isaiah 6 and other passages.
