Sean and Amanda open today's action-packed show by discussing the incredible box office success of Markiplier's self-financed ‘Iron Lung,' and they talk through how it could possibly impact the future of moviegoing and studio strategy (2:32). Then, they react to breaking news in real time, with Nancy Meyers's new film starring Penélope Cruz, Kieran Culkin, and Jude Law being dated for December 2027 (17:22). Next, they honor the legendary actor Catherine O'Hara following her passing and briefly build her Hall of Fame (21:58). Following that, Sean shares his 10 favorite movies from the Sundance Film Festival and highlights ‘Josephine' as emotionally devastating and a major standout (27:16). Later, they discuss two recent releases in ‘People We Meet on Vacation,' which they found to be quite disappointing (43:12), and the Charli xcx mockumentary ‘The Moment,' which they both thoroughly enjoyed (1:07:16). Finally, Sean is joined by legendary production designer Jack Fisk to discuss all things ‘Marty Supreme,' his incredibly detail-oriented creative process behind building a new world, and what he learned from working with filmmakers like Terrence Malick, David Lynch, and Paul Thomas Anderson (1:21:57). We all have that platonic friend who is incredibly hot, that we spend a decade going on vacations with and definitely never have romantic feelings for, and does not create tension in our relationships, right? Okay, so maybe not. But WHO CARES? We need a little unrealistic love in our lives. This week, Magda and Lindsay talk all about the swoon-y, sweet, romantic “People We Meet on Vacation,” both the book by Emily Henry and the new Netflix adaptation. This week is all about Literally Books' deep love and rom-coms, and where this story gets it right…and maybe sometimes a little wrong. We start with a brief word on what's happening in Minneapolis, then it's back to entertainment with Oscar nominations, a little Oscar trivia, and a truly dumb, dumb, dumb celebrity feud: Blake Lively vs. Justin Baldoni. Lively's emails are revealed, Taylor Swift gets pulled into the drama, and on a lighter note — Carbles. Must-watch TV includes Bridgerton's return, Finding Her Edge, and People We Meet on Vacation. Patrick Dempsey is great in Memory of a Killer on Fox/Hulu, Hudson Williams and Connor Storrie keep the Heated Rivalry torch burning in Milan, and Sydney Sweeney sparks conversation with her bra stunt promoting a lingerie line with the worst name imaginable.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
This week, we try to escape the Heated Rivalry haze with another romance book to screen adaptation, this time with Emily Henry's "People We Meet on Vacation".

The book-turned-Netflix rom-com that has the internet in a chokehold… it’s time for our brutally honest review of People We Meet On Vacation. We’re unpacking Emily Henry's beloved novel and putting it head-to-head with its Netflix adaptation — from what translated beautifully on screen to what absolutely did not. We get into the cast, the chemistry (or lack thereof), and Emily’s very strong gripe with main character Poppy (… can someone say Pick Me?).Plus we're breaking down the one scene that never should’ve made it into the film, and another that's we’re genuinely devastated was left on the cutting room floor...things get so heated at one point that Emily nearly walks out of the room. Honestly, we almost lost a host today. If you’ve read the book, watched the movie, or are just here for the mess — this one’s for you.THE END BITSThe Spill has a new podcast thats devoted to TV bingeing! In this episode, I sit down with Colin Wilkes, the costume designer behind the film adaptation of Emily Henry's People We Meet on Vacation, starring Emily Bader and Tom Blyth. We talk about what it means to feel too much, and how that emotional intensity shows up through clothing, color, and character dynamics. Colin breaks down how wardrobe helps tell a love story, shapes who characters are before they even speak, and quietly mirrors the tension, tenderness, and timing that make this story hit so hard. If you love storytelling details, emotional nuance, and the invisible art behind your favorite films, this one's for you.
Any takeaways from this episode?College friends. Annual vacations. Questionable boundaries. And the illusion that everything works better when life is on pause. This week on RomCom Rescue, Kira Sabin and Dr. Isabelle Morley break down Netflix's People We Meet on Vacation, starring Emily Bader and Tom Blyth — a friends-to-lovers story that should work… but maybe doesn't.We talk about:Why “vacation chemistry” is not the same as real-life compatibilityThe outdated question of “Can men and women be friends?”Emotional intimacy, blurry boundaries, and what actually creates problems in relationshipsWhy attraction alone doesn't mean you should build a life togetherAnd the big miss that kept this romance from fully landingFair warning: we liked parts of it… and still had a lot to say.
This week I'm joined by Emily Bader, the star of Netflix's People We Meet on Vacation. We cover how she landed the role, the adorable moment she found out she was cast, and what it felt like stepping into a book with such a devoted fanbase. We talk being called “perfectly cast,” filming in heat and rain across the vacation locations, Tom Blyth's surprising dance moves, the iconic blue wig, and how she's taking in this massive moment. This episode may contain paid endorsements and advertisements for products and services. Welcome to our very first movie review. Today, we are sitting down to talk about People We Meet on Vacation. We originally read the Emily Henry book back in episode 22, which honestly feels wild because it has been so long. Get comfy as we break down the differences between the book and the movie, what worked, what surprised us, and where the adaptation took a few creative detours. About the Novel: Alex and Poppy. They have nothing in common. She's a wild child; he wears khakis. She has insatiable wanderlust; he prefers to stay home with a book. And somehow, ever since a fateful car share home from college many years ago, they are the very best of friends. For most of the year they live far apart—she's in New York City and he's in their small hometown—but every summer for a decade, they have taken one glorious week of vacation together. Until two years ago, when they ruined everything. They haven't spoken since. Poppy has everything she should want, but she's stuck in a rut. When someone asks when she was last truly happy, she knows without a doubt it was on that ill-fated final trip with Alex. And so, she decides to convince her best friend to take one more vacation together—lay everything on the table, make it all right. Miraculously, he agrees. Now she has a week to fix everything. If only she can get around the one big truth that has always stood quietly in the middle of their seemingly perfect relationship. What could possibly go wrong? On this episode of The Best Thing We Watched This Week, Ruben and Chris discuss Netflix's People We Meet on Vacation, Cosmic Princess Kaguya!, and HIS & HERS. Andy Farnsworth joins KSL-TV to help audiences decipher #WhatToWatch for the weekend of January 9, 2026. Our Big Movie this week is Gerard Butler & Morena Baccarin returning in the disaster-movie sequel "Greenland 2: Migration", a decent-but-not-great follow up to 2020's "Greenland". An excellent option in theaters is "Is This Thing On?," where Will Arnett copes with his marital estrangement by...doing stand-up comedy. But there's more to it than just that and Laura Dern is also excellent. The best option is (According to Andy) is Angel Studios’ "I Was A Stranger." It tells a powerful story of Syrian refugees that brought him to tears in one of those tough-to-watch-but-worth-it of films. For streaming fodder, Netflix has an adaptation of the romance novel "People We Meet on Vacation" that, while I have a few minor quibbles, was still relatively entertaining. The brains behind Fan Effect are connoisseurs of categories surpassing nerdy with a goal to publish a weekly "What to Watch on the Weekend" minisode taken from KSL-TV's Friday segment, and two deep-dives a month on shows, creative works, artists, local events, and other fandom topics. Based in the beautiful Beehive State, Fan Effect celebrates Utah's unique fan culture as it has been declared The Nerdiest State in America by TIME, and is hosted by KSL Movie Show's Andy Farnsworth and Deseret News / KSL Podcasts' KellieAnn Halvorsen. The new Netflix rom-com People We Meet On Vacation is about best friends Poppy (Emily Bader) and Alex (Tom Blyth) who have gone on annual trips together since meeting in college. But there's always been something between them that's not quite platonic, and reconnecting at a wedding just might bring it to the surface. Based on the beloved Emily Henry novel, the movie's got travel, banter, and even kissing in the rain. But does it capture the charm of the book?Follow Pop Culture Happy Hour on Letterboxd at letterboxd.com/nprpopcultureLearn more about sponsor message choices: podcastchoices.com/adchoicesNPR Privacy Policy

The movie year of 2026 begins in earnest this week on the podcast with Erik Childress and Steve Prokopy looking at ten films, some of which are expansions of 2025 releases. There's a Harry/Sally-like rom-com (People We Meet on Vacation). Steve checks out a documentary of a famed writer and Holocaust survivor (Elie Wiesel: Soul on Fire), plus a pair of true stories with Lucy Liu caring for her schizophrenic son (Rosemead) and the tale of an emergency call from a six-year-old trapped in a car in Gaza (The Voice of Hind Rajab). The true stories continue with Kristen Stewart's harrowing directorial debut of a woman plagued with memories of sexual abuse (The Chronology of Water), Gus Van Sant's latest about a 1977 hostage situation (Dead Man's Wire) and Ralph Fiennes tries to get people to sing during WWI (The Choral). Two varying apocalypses occur with Daisy Ridley discovering that the victims of a catastrophic explosion are only mostly dead while Gerard Butler and his family have to leave their bunker (Greenland 2: Migration). With all that horror this week, the show wraps up with some chimpanzee terror (Primate).2:29 - Elie Wiesel: Soul On Fire8:46 - People We Meet on Vacation22:39 - Rosemead28:52 - The Chronology of Water41:02 - The Voice of Hind Rajab47:52 - Dead Man's Wire59:59 - The Choral1:09:46 - We Bury the Dead1:18:39 - Greenland 2: Migration1:25:41 - PrimateCLICK ON THE FILMS TO RENT OR PURCHASE AND HELP OUT THE MOVIE MADNESS PODCASTSIGN UP FOR AUDIBLEBe sure to check outErik's Weekly Box Office Column – At Rotten TomatoesCritics' Classics Series – At Elk Grove Cinema in Elk Grove Village, ILChicago Screening Schedule - All the films coming to theaters and streamingPhysical Media Schedule - Click & Buy upcoming titles for your library.(Direct purchases help the Movie Madness podcast with a few pennies.)Erik's Linktree - Where you can follow Erik and his work anywhere and everywhere. The Movie Madness Podcast has been recognized by Million Podcasts as one of the Top 100 Best Movie Review Podcasts as well as in the Top 60 Film Festival Podcasts and Top 100 Cinephile Podcasts.
