Note to Parents: This episode contains graphic descriptions of the procedures and medical facts concerning abortion. We strongly advise using discretion in sharing this with young children. For decades, the abortion debate has been a flashpoint of passion and division in our society -  precisely because it is so much more than words and arguments. It strikes at the very heart of what it means to build a family. Here at The Family Business with The Alessis, we believe strongly in empowering families with the truth so they can build a generational legacy, so we have prepared a 2-part series on this topic to give you the best foundation and information as things stand now, especially after the overturning of Roe. V. Wade in 2022. To help navigate this complex topic, we are blessed to welcome a family friend and expert on the laws, history and ideological concepts around the abortion industry - Cristina M. Squiers.  Cristina has a long, deep friendship with the Alessi family, and has risen to the top of her field as a ligitator and counsel in cases involving pro-life causes and the abortion industry. Today, she sits down with several of the young ladies in the Alessi family to dig deeper into how this issue affects women and families beyond the soundbites and political chatter. Cristina Squiers graduated from Princeton University and was a recipient of the University's ReachOut Fellowship.  During her fellowship year, Cristina worked at the nation's largest adoption agency and started a mentoring program for youth leaving foster care.  She received her J.D. from Southern Methodist University Dedman School of Law where she served as Editor-in-Chief of the SMU Law Review and interned for Catharina Haynes of the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit. She now practices law in Dallas, TX and is married to her husband Dr. Jack Squiers. Together they have 3 children and are expecting their fourth. . If this helped you, you should also listen to: From Mother to Daughter: Honest Questions about Marriage, Motherhood and Changing Seasons | S3 E17Twin Talk: Why Wise Women Need To Share Their Stories w/ Mary Alessi and Martha Munizzi | S5 E19 JOIN THE FAMILY BUSINESS! Anger still percolates through the community around Bridgewater, fifteen years after the murder of 12-year-old Karissa Boudreau. Sherri Aikenhead was working in the Nova Scotia Department of Justice when Penny Boudreau pleaded guilty to the second-degree murder of her daughter. She vowed to someday tell that story and she has in her new true crime book called Mommy Don't: From Mother to Murderer / The True Story of Penny and Karissa Boudreau. This week marks the fifteenth anniversary of the charge being laid. It also gives Penny the opportunity to apply for early parole under the so-called Faint Hope Clause. That is a since released statutory provision that allowed prisoners who have been sentenced to life imprisonment with a parole eligibility period of greater than 15 years to apply for early parole once they have served 15 years. Aikenhead reflects on the writing of the book, the chance for parole and her thoughts on the impacts felt on the community a decade and a half later.

Cheers to this episode of Happy Hour! Happy Mother’s Day! I lived in this fantasy world that after giving birth, I would look as good as Meghan Markle. That didn’t happen. We give a BIG shoutout Amy Schumer for keeping it real! Thanks, girl. I like to call this time of year the flower season. From Mother’s Day to Teacher Appreciation to Weddings finding the perfect flowers is priceless, mainly personally grown. But is it ever okay to cut flowers from your neighbor's yard? And the pressure of social media is so real; families are faking it.

Fashioning Fun for Austin’s Pediatric Patients Aysa Province has a longstanding love for fashion, event planning and giving back to those in need. And yet she confessed to wondering how her three passions would one day fit together. Then, the vision for “Beautifully Loved” firmly took hold of her heart. It started with the idea of a fashion show, to support and spotlight young patients of the Blood and Cancer Center at Dell Children’s Hospital. And with one night’s worth of runway sashay, Province caught a glimpse of her life’s calling. “I played with the idea for months,” she said. “I had questions of — is this enough and will this actually make a difference? Finally I just took the leap of faith and everything kind of fell into place. In my head I just thought I’d rather try and know than always wonder what if.” The impact that Beautifully Loved has made in a short time, is beyond measure. From Mother’s and Father’s Day pamper events to holiday initiatives and fundraisers like the Fashion Show, Province and Beautifully Loved are showing the community that there is a lot of power in a little lipstick. In this episode of Voices of Impact, Aysa and I discuss how to be a voice of love and rest for children and families in need. We talk about unwavering conviction, rallying support for a grass-roots charity and learning to be ‘enough.’ And Aysa shares the important lesson of how to walk into fear and come out a stronger leader, on the other side.
