From October 2014: Ed, Tony and Donna welcome Dawn Wells, the actress known to three generations of television viewers as Mary Ann on Gilligan’s Island. Dawn’s new book, What Would Mary Ann Do? A Guide to Life, takes the question “Ginger or Mary Ann” a step further by showing readers how Mary Ann would respond to the various changes in today’s culture that face women of all ages. The book also includes memories of Dawn’s life and career before and after Gilligan’s Island, while also paying tribute to each of her six fellow cast members. In this segment Dawn tells us that, because Mary Ann was the least developed character on Gilligan's Island going into production, she had to build the character from scratch, such that her values became Mary Ann's values, and vice versa.  This marked the first of several appearances that Dawn made on our program. Topics this segment include how the frankness and honesty of the early episodes of Saturday Night shocked many NBC executives (including those in Standards and Practices), and how executive producer Lorne Michaels fought tirelessly on behalf of the show over the network's efforts to censor certain material---including, in some cases, right up to the final minutes before airtime. Domari chats with Akilah about how she became more aware of what it took for her to begin, moving away from a controlling approach and towards more positive and purposeful parenting.WHAT WE DISCUSSDomari speaks from her own experience as a Black woman on how the resources and theory about homeschooling lacked diversity. She didn’t see herself or her family represented, in homeschooling communities online and in books and podcasts. Domari homeschooled her children for two years before sending them to public school. Her children immediately had conflicts because of the way that their teachers were managing their learning processes, so they asked to go back to homeschooling.Domari and Akilah also talk about what positive parenting means and how moving from a schoolish setting to a more partner centered way of being allows trust to happen, supporting practices can create an environment where children can feel safe reaching out to their parents.ANNOUNCEMENTSDeschooling work for adults: Remember that Intuition Work from the Ours First Series, offered by Kelly Limes-Taylor, is now open for registration. In this podcast we talk about Maria's journey from a principal soloist with major ballet companies to a professional conducting career. She also talks about her family and work balance, passion for the violin, and much more! Estonian born Maria Seletskaja enjoyed 15 years on the international ballet stage as principal soloist with the Royal Ballet of Flanders, Staatsballett Berlin, Zürich Ballet and Estonian National Ballet. Parallel to her dancing career, Maria continued her musical studies both privately and at the Berklee College of Music (Boston USA) and, by 2013, was ready to start conducting piano rehearsals at her company of the time - the Royal Ballet of Flanders. Since 2016 Maria Seletskaja’s experience as a conductor has naturally developed into a full time career. She was invited to be assistant to the music director of Casco Phil (former Flemish Chamber Philharmonic Orchestra) and received a similar invitation one year later from the Stuttgart Ballet. In 2018 she conducted her Stuttgart premiere to great acclaim in the ballet La Fille mal gardée ( Herold / Ashton), which was followed by performances of Mayerling(Liszt / MacMillan). She also made her conducting debuts at the National Ballet of Georgia and Moravian Philharmonic Orchestra and was selected as one of five participants for a conducting course with Paul Murphy at the Royal Opera House in May 2019. From October 2019 Maria Seletskaja is Conductor-in-Residence for one season at the National Ballet of Canada to conduct performances of Romeo and Juliet, Swan Lake, Giselle, The Sleeping Beauty, and several others. In the season 2020-21 Maria will return to the National Ballet of Canada and will make her debut with the Ballet Santiago de Chile in their production of The Sleeping Beauty. Alongside her professional engagements Maria continues her musical studies, concentrating on broadening her repertoire to include a wider range of both orchestral and operatic repertoire. Amongst her most influential teachers Maria counts James Tuggle (music director Stuttgart Ballet, Stuttgart Opera House) and Rodolfo Saglimbeni. A regular attendee of the Järvi Academy Maria, has also benefitted from personal advice and guidance from Paavo Järvi. In December 2019, Maria had a chance to follow maestro Järvi for two weeks during his work with the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen. Kia ora,Welcome to Friday's Economy Watch where we follow the economic events and trends that affect New Zealand.I'm David Chaston and this is the International edition from Interest.co.nz.Today we lead with news the Kiwi dollar is rising as equity markets rise. The Americans are going into their long weekend holiday with some very mixed signals from their jobs market. First the good news: the June non-farm payrolls data reported stronger jobs growth than expected before the recent virus spike. A gain of +3 mln jobs was expected but this survey shows the gain was a stronger 4.8 mln in June. Their official jobless rate is now 11.1%. Their participation rate improved to a very low 61.5%. But that jobless rate is on the way to 14%. before it shrinks permanently. But the same survey reported that those who returned to work are being paid a lot less, and doing much reduced hours. Both factors reduced the average workweek and average pay in June.. And this data means that there are almost 15 mln fewer people employed in June than February, with the part-time workforce double its February level. The latest weekly unemployment claims data was also released overnight and that indicated a higher than expected level of claims last week with prior week's data revised higher. There are now 19.3 mln people on unemployment benefits and most are now more than half-way through what they can claim. From October on, they will drop off and things will get really tough if they can't find work. Their "insured unemployment rate" is currently 13.2% and well above the official rate. That doesn't bode well for July labour force data. The New York ISM report released overnight is telling. Even though business expect conditions in six months to have fully recovered, the level of new orders remains weak and there was no expectation that these businesses have re-hiring plans.International trade is still a problem for the US. Exports of both goods and services fell while imports were stable and that raised their overall trade deficit to its second highest in history. Clearly higher tariffs aren't a solution to this long-running problem. But Wall Street is still in positive territory today, up +1.1% in afternoon trade and liking what it saw in the jobs data. They are ignoring the dodgy bits. European markets have made even larger gains today, up about +2.8% overnight. And yesterday both Shanghai (+2.1%) and Hong Kong (+2.9%) recorded outsized gains although Tokyo (+0.1%) didn't really join the party. In China, vehicle sales rose +11% in June from the same month in 2019 to almost 2.3 mln units, a sharp recovery and better than expected. That caps three months of year-on-year gains, although it was boosted by stronger commercial vehicle sales and significant tax rebates. But the sales reported are by manufactureres to dealers and it is not clear that the dealers are selling their growing inventories at the sale fast rate. There may be a Chinese car crash coming. The latest compilation of COVID-19 data is here. The global tally is 10,761,200 and that is a sharp jump of +249,000 in one day. Global deaths reported now exceed 518,000.A quarter of all reported cases globally are in the US, which is up +100,000 in two days to 2,713,200. US deaths now exceed 128,000. The number of active infections in the US is now up to 1,854,800, up +64,600 in a day. In Europe, the only country that hasn't crushed its curve is now Sweden where they are reporting record new cases. In Australia, there have been 8001, another +81 since yesterday and a fast-rising tide, especially in Victoria. Community transfer is not under control there. Their death count is still at 104 but their recovery rate has slipped back to under 89%. There are now 807 active cases in Australia (up +54 overnight). The UST 10yr yield is little-changed at 0.67%. The gold price has firmed overnight, up +US$5 to US$1,776/oz.Oil prices have firmed again today. They are now just under US$41/bbl in the US and the Brent price is just over US$43/bbl.The Kiwi dollar is firmer again, now just on 65.1 USc. On the cross rates we are up as well, now at 94.1 AUc and against the euro we are also firmer at 58 euro cents. That means our TWI-5 has risen to 70 and its strongest in more than four months. The bitcoin price has fallen away overnight, down -2.3% to US$9,080. It is now below NZ$14,000 for the first time in two months.

In 1982, a group of business and community leaders set a goal to increase dialogue and foster collaboration on projects to improve the quality of life for all Houstonians. Their vision was to identify and reach more leaders -- and those with leadership potential – and inspire them to expand their involvement within the community. That vision became Leadership Houston. From business and education, to healthcare, government, non-profits, and the arts – there are hundreds of professional people who are alumni members of Leadership Houston. This podcast is going to introduce you to many of them and highlight what they’re doing now as engaged leaders, tackling challenges, creating new opportunities, helping people, contributing to the community – sharing knowledge and using their expertise to make a difference. Leadership Houston’s Signature Program is a ten-month journey for a new class of Fellows every year. The journey for each class begins in August, when you attend the kickoff orientation and meet your classmates. In September you go on an overnight class retreat. From October through May you have one full-day learning session every month that introduces you to people and immerses you in experiences to understand what makes Houston tick. You and your class members spend each monthly learning day visiting a venue that’s a key element in a specific sector of the city -- corporate business, educational and healthcare institutions, local government, political offices, and law enforcement, non-profits, the cultural and performing arts… you get deep insights into Houston’s major community issues and unique opportunities to discover and develop ways that you can be a leader where you work and in the larger community. Those insights help your class develop a civic project that you collaborate to complete as an enduring legacy contribution from your class to the community. And then the program culminates with a closing overnight retreat in June. Just how do you qualify to participate in this journey? If you’re sincerely committed and motivated, you could be an ideal candidate if you’re a professional with ten or more years of experience, you have proven leadership skills, and you’re currently involved in the community – but not running for an elected office at the time you put in your application.Leadership Houston accepts applications year-round from candidates who want to join the class of the following year. Visit the website – Leadershiphouston.ORG – to learn more about the application process and to review the class schedule. That’s important because attendance at the retreats and at the monthly learning sessions is mandatory, so you want to avoid any potential schedule conflicts before you submit a candidate application.  The Leadership Houston Podcast host is Renee Griffin, a corporate communications and public relations professional. She is one of the 54 members of Class XXIX which graduated in 2011. That class was a diverse mix representing all kinds of racial, ethnic, socioeconomic, and professional backgrounds -- a mix of extroverts, introverts, folks who take care of business and love to have a good time socially. A highlight of the Class XXIX journey was planning, designing, building, and opening the Palmetto MultiSensory Hiking/Walking Trail at the Houston Arboretum and Nature Center near Memorial Park. The purpose of the trail was to enable blind and visually impaired people in our community to independently enjoy the experience of nature for themselves. Class XXIX set a Leadership Houston record by raising nearly $70,000 for the project and gained loads of media attention for it.Currently, the Palmetto Trail is not open; it’s been reverted back to a natural habitat. The arboretum-nature center is in the middle of a master plan restoration, so there may be an opportunity to reestablish the trail in the future. Coincidentally, the Executive Director of the arboretum-nature center is a member of Leadership Houston Class XXX.
