Farming unions in Wales have lost their fight to scrap strict new limits on spreading slurry and fertiliser. The Welsh Parliament has narrowly voted to uphold restrictions designed to clean up Welsh rivers. Farmers however, say they're excessive and could push some smaller farms out of business. As the government consultation into gene edited crops continues, we hear from American scientists using the technology to speed up the growth of tomatoes and change the shape of their vines. The government's doubled the limit of bioethanol allowed in fuel. From September, E10 petrol will be introduced: that's a blend of petrol with up to 10% crop-based biofuel. The Department for Transport says it will reduce carbon dioxide emissions equivalent to taking 350,000 cars off the road - but there are concerns... And councils in Sussex are buying back farmland for rewilding; Adur and Worthing Councils hope it will help them reduce carbon emissions and meet their net zero targets. Dragnet, the brainchild of Jack Webb, may very well be the most well-remembered, and the best, radio police drama series. From September, 1949 through February 1957, Dragnet's 30 minute shows, broadcast on NBC, brought to radio true police stories in a low-key, documentary style. The origins of Dragnet can be traced to a semi-documentary film, "He Walked by Night" from 1948, in which Webb had a small role. Both employed the same Los Angeles Police Department technical adviser, used actual police cases and presented the case in "just the facts" manner that became a hallmark of Dragnet. It is interesting to note that Webb employed that format in other radio series, some pre-dating the film mentioned above. Dragnet was a long running radio and television police procedural drama, about the cases of a dedicated Los Angeles police detective, Sergeant Joe Friday, and his partners. The show takes its name from an actual police term, a dragnet, meaning a system of coordinated measures for apprehending criminals or suspects. Dragnet was perhaps the most famous and influential police procedural drama in American media history. The series gave millions of Americans a feel for the boredom and drudgery, as well as the danger and heroism, of real life police work. Dragnet earned praise for improving the public opinion of police officers. The Teachers' Podcast

EPISODE NOTES In this episode, Claire talks over the internet with Steve Bladon, headteacher at Horncastle Primary School, a large 3-form entry school in Lincolnshire. Steve talks about his background in education and his route into teaching from undertaking an NVQ after leaving school and, at the same time, working as a teaching assistant before moving into teacher training at what is now the University of Cumbria. After gaining his degree, Steve worked as a reception teacher before becoming Early Years and Foundation Stage leader, then assistant headteacher and headteacher during his time at several schools in Lancashire. He relocated over to Lincolnshire and took over the headship at Horncastle Primary School. Throughout the episode, Steve discusses the challenges that he and all school leaders have faced over the last two terms with schools closing to most pupils and, more recently, the seemingly ever-changing and sometimes contradictory government guidance on returning to full-time schooling for all children. As a part of this, Steve talks about his recent open letter to Gavin Williamson, the Education Secretary at the time of recording and how his school is preparing for the start of the new academic year in a time of significant educational upheaval. Steve shares his thoughts on the many complications and concerns around reopening schools in a time of a global pandemic and what steps he and his staff are taking to keep everyone as safe as possible.   KEY TAKEAWAYS Do what will work best for your school based on what you know. Remember that guidance is written by civil servants – many of whom will probably not be educationalists or have any significant experience in the field. Every school is unique and the staff are best placed to know what will work best for them and their setting. It is also important to remember that these documents are guidance and very little is statutory. Make bespoke plans for your school that are workable using your judgement, common sense, your collective experience and the knowledge you have of your community. For example, taking the temperatures of children regularly in some schools might be practicable and a reasonable measure in some places, but not necessarily workable or necessary in other settings. Expect unpredictable complications and changes of plan. Ultimately, everyone will have to start somewhere with plans for reopening. Even well thought out plans and the best preparation can unexpectedly come unstuck when put into practice. This isn’t necessarily reflective of a shortcoming of the planning process, more a reality that what transpires in action cannot always be foreseen. It’s important to be flexible and not be afraid to start again or rethink things if you’re not totally happy with them or if they can be improved. This is an ideal time for creativity and rethinking approaches. The upheaval and changes to our lives and ways of working brought about by the pandemic does actually provide a useful time for schools to rethink the status quo. School routines and ways of working – which for many will have been unchanged for a long time – could now be re-examined as we begin to return. An example is assemblies which, for almost all schools, involve a time consuming process of moving the whole school to a single room. From September, doing this would be almost impossible as it would involve bringing a large group of people and ‘bubbles’ together. However, time can be saved here with doing assemblies remotely into classrooms, creating videos or materials or discussing a common message.   BEST MOMENTS “I'm thinking rationally, by the end of September and early October, we'll be in a situation where some children are ill and we've got to make a decision. Are they ill with something which is a potential risk which is too serious to ignore? Or are their symptoms something else which, actually, we've got to live with going forward? Because to stop school for every cough, temperature and potential case of COVID-19 could be really problematic.” “That's where we've got to with schools because on the one hand schools have been tasked with reopening. But on the other hand, it's not really business as usual. It's everybody in, but there's this whole load of 'what if' questions.” “It's about being dynamic. You can have protocols and plans and theories and you can have opinions. But what you've got to do is be able to adapt and change and see what happens and then see what's workable.” “I believe that education is the most important profession in a civilised society. Things like dropping guidance on a Friday night, or in the middle of the night, or on a Bank Holiday Monday. That's not the way to treat a profession.” “Our profession has been saying for months, 'Please can we have the guidance. What's plan B?'… I can't think of an excuse for things not being done more timely.” “Part of my job this year has been to try and reassure parents. Even when sometimes that's been an impossible job because we're trying to reassure people about things that we're not always certain about ourselves.” “I think communication has been really important in my school in lockdown.” “I can't use the term ‘COVID secure’ because I think that's a misnomer.” “Things will keep changing, and goodness knows how long we're in this for. I think we reserve the right to change what we're doing, and to change our minds and to change our schools to keep them as safe as possible.” “In twenty-one years in schools, whether I've been an NQT or an experienced teacher or a key stage leader or a head, it doesn't matter whether you work in a town, or a city or a rural place, it's a hard job and it's a time consuming job. I don't think we should ever pretend we can make it really easy or a lot less time consuming. I think it just could be different.”   VALUABLE RESOURCES Steve Bladon’s open letter to Gavin Williamson: https://stevebheadteacher.wordpress.com/2020/08/29/a-letter-to-gavin-williamson/ Steve Bladon on Twitter: https://twitter.com/bladon_steve Classroom Secrets Kids: https://kids.classroomsecrets.co.uk The Teachers’ Podcast: https://www.facebook.com/groups/TheTeachersPodcast/ Classroom Secrets Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/ClassroomSecretsLimited/ Classroom Secrets website: https://classroomsecrets.co.uk/ LIFE/work balance campaign: https://classroomsecrets.co.uk/lifeworkbalance-and-wellbeing-in-education-campaign-2019/   ABOUT THE HOST Claire Riley Claire, alongside her husband Ed, is one of the directors of Classroom Secrets, a company she founded in 2013 and which provides outstanding differentiated resources for teachers, schools, parents and tutors worldwide. We do know it will run the new battery line 24/7 with four shifts and some 100 workers. The automaker is now seeking 'Production Associates' and a 'Controls Engineering Manager.' These new employees will work on Tesla's pilot battery cell production line. On Tuesday, September 22, 2020, on the same day as Tesla's Annual Meeting of Stockholders, we should have many more details thanks to Tesla's Battery Day."   https://insideevs.com/news/436867/tesla-hiring-pilot-battery-cell-production-line/   PANASONIC AIMS TO BOOST ENERGY DENSITY IN TESLA BATTERIES BY 20% "Panasonic Corp (6752.T) plans to boost the energy density of “2170” battery cells it supplies to Tesla Inc (TSLA.O) by 20% in five years and commercialize a cobalt-free version “in two to three years”, the head of its U.S. EV battery business said." according to a Reuters report: "This is the first time Panasonic, a leading cell provider for the world’s top electric vehicle (EV) maker Tesla, has outlined these targets, putting down a marker in a highly competitive sector to stay ahead of the game. Panasonic introduced the “2170” lithium-ion cells, with the nickel-cobalt-aluminium (NCA) cathode chemistry, for Tesla’s Model 3 in 2017. Researchers say it already has the highest energy density at above 700 watt-hour per litre. A cobalt-free version on the other hand would cut reliance on a costly and controversial component, which makes batteries stable but poses ethical issues given controversial labour conditions in top producer the Democratic Republic of Congo. From September, the firm will start converting lines at its factory in Nevada that it operates with Tesla as it prepares to further boost the energy density of the cells. CATL is supplying Tesla with low-cost lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries that contain no cobalt.  "   https://www.reuters.com/article/us-panasonic-tesla-exclusive/exclusive-panasonic-aims-to-boost-energy-density-in-tesla-batteries-by-20-executive-idUSKCN24V1GB   GM WILL HELP EVGO TRIPLE ITS FAST CHARGER NETWORK IN THE US "General Motors is working with electric vehicle charging network EVgo to build more than 2,700 new fast chargers in cities and suburbs across the US over the next five years. That is more than triple the 800 fast chargers that EVgo currently has on its network, which is in 34 states and serves “more than 200,000 customers.”" says The Verge: "The buildout will help EVgo keep pace with other growing fast-charging networks. Tesla boasts 2,000 Supercharger stations (and 18,000 stalls) worldwide, and Volkswagen’s new Electrify America network is already up to 452 stations in the US. The new stations will be “located in highly visible areas and most will be able to charge at least four vehicles simultaneously,” according to a press release, and will be able to charge at rates between 100kW to 350kW. They won’t be exclusive to GM vehicles, and the first chargers that are part of this new buildout will be available in early 2021. The two companies are targeting around 40 different metropolitan markets."   https://www.theverge.com/2020/7/31/21349614/general-motors-evgo-fast-charging-network-investment   VOLTA TRUCKS & DPD BRING FULL-ELECTRIC LARGE COMMERCIAL VEHICLE PARCEL DELIVERIES TO LONDON’S ULTRA LOW EMISSION ZONE Volta Trucks, the Scandinavian start-up full-electric vehicle manufacturer, will soon start a pilot test of its forthcoming Volta Zero with DPD, the UK’s leading parcel delivery service. The Volta Zero will be tested by DPD within London’s Ultra Low Emission Zone in Q1-2021, supporting their micro-depot strategy in Westminster.   Rob Fowler, Chief Executive Officer of Volta Trucks, added: As the world’s first purpose- built full-electric large commercial vehicle, the Volta Zero was specifically designed to deliver parcels and freight in inner city locations where today’s air quality and noise pollution challenges are at their worst. The Volta Zero’s full-electric, zero-emission operation is perfectly suited to DPD’s distribution requirements within London’s strict Ultra Low Emission Zone, delivering parcels to Central London’s customers in a clean and efficient way.”   EV WEST WANTS TO BREAK AN ELECTRIC SPEED RECORD "The electric powertrain nerds at EV West are doing everything they can to propel Southern California hot rod culture into the future. Electric drivetrain swaps in old cars are their bread and butter, but in the process they’ve realized just how fast these things can be. With a custom tube-chassis, a slippery aerodynamic body, a hopped-up Tesla motor, and a rack of high-tech batteries, these mad scientists are aiming for an electric land speed record."  reports Jalopnik: "We do know that the Electraliner will have 294 individual Panasonic battery cells for a total of 357 volts, which sounds like a lot. We know that the team plans to haul a small solar array out to the salt for charging purposes, keeping their three swappable racks of batteries topped up between runs. We know that the plan is to only use the top 50 percent of each battery pack, as power drops off precipitously after that. And we know that the whole kit and kaboodle will be cooled with 5 gallons of ice water poured in right before each run."   https://jalopnik.com/ev-west-wants-to-break-the-electric-speed-record-at-bon-1844577249   You can listen to all 854 previous episodes of this this for free, where you get your podcasts from, plus the blog https://www.evnewsdaily.com/ – remember to subscribe, which means you don’t have to think about downloading the show each day, plus you get it first and free and automatically.   It would mean a lot if you could take 2mins to leave a quick review on whichever platform you download the podcast.   And  if you have an Amazon Echo, download our Alexa Skill, search for EV News Daily and add it as a flash briefing.   Come and say hi on Facebook, LinkedIn or Twitter just search EV News Daily, have a wonderful day, I’ll catch you tomorrow and remember…there’s no such thing as a self-charging hybrid.     PHIL ROBERTS / ELECTRIC FUTURE (PREMIUM PARTNER) BRAD CROSBY (PREMIUM PARTNER) AVID TECHNOLOGY (PREMIUM PARTNER) PORSCHE OF THE VILLAGE CINCINNATI (PREMIUM PARTNER) AUDI CINCINNATI EAST (PREMIUM PARTNER) VOLVO CARS CINCINNATI EAST (PREMIUM PARTNER) NATIONALCARCHARGING.COM and ALOHACHARGE.COM  (PREMIUM PARTNER) DEREK REILLY FROM THE EV REVIEW IRELAND YOUTUBE CHANNEL (PREMIUM PARTNER)   DAVID AND LISA ALLEN (PARTNER) OEM AUDIO OF NEW ZEALAND AND EVPOWER.CO.NZ (PARTNER) GARETH HAMER eMOBILITY NORWAY HTTPS://WWW.EMOBILITYNORWAY.COM/  (PARTNER) BOB BOOTHBY – MILLBROOK COTTAGES AND ELOPEMENT WEDDING VENUE (PARTNER)   ALAN ROBSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ALAN SHEDD (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ALEX BANAHENE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ALEXANDER FRANK @ https://www.youtube.com/c/alexsuniverse42 ANDERS HOVE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ANDREA JEFFERSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ASEER KHALID (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ASHLEY HILL (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) BÅRD FJUKSTAD (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) BRENT KINGSFORD (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) BRIAN THOMPSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) BRUCE BOHANNAN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) CHARLES HALL (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) CHRIS HOPKINS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) COLIN HENNESSY AND CAMBSEV (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) CRAIG COLES (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) CRAIG ROGERS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAMIEN DAVIS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DARREN FEATCH (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAVE DEWSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAVID FINCH (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAVID MOORE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAVID PARTINGTON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAVID PRESCOTT (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DEREK REILLY FROM THE EV REVIEW IRELAND YOUTUBE CHANNEL (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DON MCALLISTER / SCREENCASTSONLINE.COM (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ERU KYEYUNE-NYOMBI (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) FREDRIK ROVIK (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) GENE RUBIN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) GILBERTO ROSADO (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) GEOFF LOWE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) HEDLEY WRIGHT (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) IAN GRIFFITHS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) IAN SEAR (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) IAN (WATTIE) WATKINS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JACK OAKLEY (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JAMES STORR (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JIM MORRIS (EXECUTIVE PRODICERS) JOHN C SOLAR (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JON AKA BEARDY MCBEARDFACE FROM KENT EVS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JON MANCHAK (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JUAN GONZALEZ (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) KEN MORRIS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) KEVIN MEYERSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) KYLE MAHAN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) LARS DAHLAGER (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) LAURENCE D ALLEN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) LEE BROWN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) LUKE CULLEY (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) MARCEL WARD (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) MARK BOSSERT (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) MARTY YOUNG  (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) MATT PISCIONE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) MIA OPPELSTRUP (PARTNER) MICHAEL PASTRONE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) MIKE WINTER (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) NATHAN GORE-BROWN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) NEIL E ROBERTS FROM SUSSEX EVS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) NIGEL MILES (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) OHAD ASTON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PAUL RIDINGS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER)               PAUL STEPHENSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PETE GLASS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PETE GORTON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PETER & DEE ROBERTS FROM OXON EVS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER)  PHIL MOUCHET (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PHILIP TRAUTMAN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) RAJ BADWAL (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) RAJEEV NARAYAN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) RENE KEEMIK (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) RENÉ SCHNEIDER (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) RICHARD LUPINSKY (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ROB HERMANS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ROB FROM THE RSTHINKS EV CHANNEL ON YOUTUBE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) RUPERT MITCHELL (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) SEIKI PAYNE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) STEPHEN PENN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) STEVE JOHN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) THOMAS J.
