Thomas Mendoza joined NetApp in 1994 as Vice President of North America sales. He served as its President from 2000 until 2008, when he became Vice Chairman. He helped establish the culture that allowed NetApp to be ranked #1 in Fortune Magazine’s "100 Best Companies To Work For" in 2009, as well as being a co-recipient with NetApp CEO, Dan Warmenhoven of the Morgan Stanley Leadership Award for Global Commerce —the first time the award had been co-presented to two individuals. Mendoza retired from NetApp in 2019 and currently serves on the Boards of VAST Data, UiPath, Varonis, ServiceSource, and Arxan. He previously served on the Boards of Infoblox, NetScreen (acquired by Juniper Networks), and Rhapsody Networks (acquired by Brocade). Mr. Mendoza also serves on the Justin Tuck RUSH Foundation for Children's Literacy. Mendoza frequently speaks on corporate culture and leadership to a wide variety of audiences which have included major Universities such as Stanford University (where he has been a guest lecturer since 1997), Notre Dame, Harvard and United States Military Academy as well as to diverse groups such as the United States Marine Corps, keynotes at Oracle World and numerous other industry events. Charities that Mr. Mendoza has been significantly involved with include the Pat Tillman Foundation, St. Baldrick’s Foundation, the Navy SEAL Foundation and Justin Tuck’s RUSH Foundation for Children’s literacy. Mendoza holds a BA from Notre Dame and is an alumnus of the Stanford Executive Program (SEP). In September 2000 Notre Dame named (was not named before) their business school the Mendoza College of Business after an endowment from Tom and Kathy Mendoza.
Today, my guest is Lars Christian Wilde, the President, Chief Business Officer and Co‑founder of Compass Pathways. Compass is a “mental health care company dedicated to accelerating patient access to evidence-based innovation in mental health.” as they describe themselves. Compass was one of the first companies engaging in a bigger vision of the substance psilocybin. But back to Lars. He is a special guest to me, since I like his open mind. I remember talking to Lars in one of our first podcasts about vaccine against depression in the future. I also remember how openly Lars talked about his treatment-resistant depression and anxiety disorder and the effects it had on him and the people in his life. He told me about his treatment with psilocybin, that helped him tremendously to begin a new life with a different mental health set. I am always a fan of people, especially entrepreneurs in the psychedelic field, that share their psychedelic experiences and are personally affected by the power of psychedelic substances. In 2020 lot of things have happened at Compass Pathways. In September 2020 the company became a public company, listing their stock on Nasdaq and raising $146.6 million. Compass became one of the most exciting company in the field. Lars and I catch up, what is happening in the Compass World right now. How does a psychedelic public company feels and works different? How does the Compass and Sheppard Pratt collaboration look like, since Compass is opening a Centre of Excellence in collaboration with The Sheppard Pratt Institute for Advanced Diagnostics and Therapeutics in Baltimore, Maryland, to do more research. Their psychiatry department exists since the 1800s. We talk about how Compass works with the Charité hospital in Berlin and how to do conduct a study in times of Covid at all, we discuss COMP360, a psilocybin therapy trial for treatment-resistant depression designed by Compass for future treatments of depression (https://compasspathways.com/)
This is a rerelease of episode #73, from September 2020, about the devastating effects the federal PRO Act would have on independent contractors in the U.S. I am rereleasing this now because the House has announced its plans to vote on this act next week, the week of March 8. We need your help! We must all tell our House representative and our two senators the impact of the PRO Act on our careers. We must explain that we are not “gig workers,” that we are career professionals just like lawyers and accountants. Please tell your story about how you benefit by being an independent contractor. The PRO Act will likely pass the Democratic House. But, in the 50-50 split Senate, there is hope, but we must get the word out and talk to our legislators and senators now. This is a call to action! Here is the edited version of the original show notes from September, with resources below: Today’s guest are Kim Kavin and Karon Warren, two longtime freelance writers who have built successful freelance businesses. Both are active in the fight against the national PRO Act. Kim was active fighting against a similar state bill in New Jersey, and Karon heads up the national efforts to defeat the PRO Act through the grassroots organization Fight for Freelancers. The PRO Act (Protecting the Right to Organize) was introduced in Congress in late 2019. The initial intent of the bill was to protect workers who are misclassified and give them the ability to join a union. However, the bill was amended to add a classification test taken directly from California’s disastrous anti-freelance bill (now law) known as AB5. That test is called the ABC Test and was written in the 1930s for factory workers. The way the ABC Test is currently written prohibits most independent contractors from working with clients. It doesn’t matter if you call yourself a freelancer, consultant, an agency, whatever — if you are a W9 independent contractor, this affects you. The rest of the PRO Act does not harm freelancers, so freelancers need to focus their efforts on getting the ABC Test part of the bill changed. The push for this bill is union funded, and Democrats—including President Joe Biden—support the bill. In California, legislators “weaponized” the ABC Test by deleting some of the original language. The ABC Test has three prongs (A, B, C) that independent contractors must pass in order to do business. It’s the B part that is the problem. B originally had two parts: Part 1 says you can’t be in the same line of business as the company that is paying you to do the work. But Part 2 negates Part 1 if you do all of your work off company premises. Most freelancers can pass Part 2. However, California deleted Part 2, leaving only the part that says you can’t be in the same line of business as the company paying you. That went into law in January 2020 in the state and destroyed careers of all types of independent contractors, who could no longer work for companies in their industry. This included respiratory therapists and other medical professionals who contract with various hospitals — they lost work when they were needed the most during the pandemic. Other careers and industries affected include journalists, content writers, editors, real estate appraisers, comedians, theater workers, symphonies and orchestras, truck drivers, translators and more. In fact, California has found more than 300 industries hurt by AB5. California freelancer writers managed to get an exemption in the law that capped their submissions to 35 a year for each client. The exemption partially helped some writers, but it also had a lot of problems — for example, content writers, blog writers and newspaper columnists could quickly and easily hit 35 submissions, ending their work for that year for that client. Forbes, Hearst and New York Times were among those who have stopped hiring California freelancers. In December 2019, the AB5 copycat bills started popping up in Democrat strongholds (blue states), including New York and New Jersey, where Kim lives. The bill was introduced in New Jersey with about six weeks to go in a lame duck session. New Jersey freelance writers organized quickly to educate lawmakers about the damage to freelance careers. In New Jersey, lawmakers seemed to pay attention when the writers explained that they were “career professionals,” who earn anywhere from $50 to $300 an hour from clients. They compared themselves to specialized accountants and attorneys. They told individual stories that showed that they were professionals, not victims. The movement created the Twitter hashtag #IRSNotABC, which represents that the IRS standard is a better standard than the ABC Test. We should advocate for the PRO Act and state copycat bills to change their language to follow the IRS standard, not the ABC Test. The IRS standard already exists. It was written in the 1980s and has been updated since. The standard has about 60 questions to evaluate the relationship between a person and a company. The IRS website says, “The general rule is that an individual is an independent contractor if the payer has the right to control or direct only the result of the work, not what will be done and how it will be done.” Unlike the B part of ABC, the IRS standard allows independent contractors to work in the same industry as their clients. Most legitimate independent contractors can pass the IRS standard. Laws already exist to protect exploited freelancers, and individuals can file a report with the IRS if they believe they have been exploited, like if they were hired as a “freelancer” but the company required them to work a full-time schedule and on the premises. That is not freelancing. The U.S. Department of Labor in both the Obama and Trump administrations prosecuted cases against companies who have misclassified employees. Some freelancers have said that the PRO Act or a state version doesn’t affect them for various reasons. Let’s go through some of these myths to debunk them and let independent contractors know they are in jeopardy: Myth 1: “I’m protected if I’m an LLC or S Corp.” Not true. While the test says “established business,” you must pass the B prong of the ABC Test to be able to work as an independent contractor. New Jersey advocates asked lawmakers to amend the bill to state that being an LLC or S Corp would exempt independent contractors from the law, but they would not add the language. Myth 2: “This is a partisan issue and those fighting against it are all Trump supporters or Republicans.” Not true. Karon explains that advocates are not taking political sides; they are talking about fixing this piece of legislation. It’s just a fact that Democrats, including Joe Biden, support the PRO Act and the ABC Test. Therefore, it’s critical to educate Democrat lawmakers about why the ABC Test is harmful to freelancers. Melanie’s opinion: If you are a Democrat like me and have Democrat representatives and senators, I think it’s even more critical we speak up because it’s the Democrats’ minds we have to change AND we are their constituents and members of their party. Both Democrats and Republicans can educate their Democratic lawmakers and also ensure their Republican lawmakers know about the PRO Act and will work to change it or vote against it. Myth 3: “Those vocal against the PRO Act are paid by anti-union operatives.” Not true. These are all independent contractors who have created grassroots organizations out of necessity to save their freelance careers. This myth makes it even more important that individual freelancers explain their business and their success to legislators so they can understand who we are. What You Can Do: Educate yourself about the PRO Act and how to fight against it. See resources list below. Contact your U.S. House representative and your two state senators THIS WEEK. Ask to speak to them directly or email them. You can gather a small group of freelancers in your state and request a Zoom meeting. Tell your lawmakers your individual freelance success stories and the benefits you get from freelancing. Explain how much you are contributing to the economy. Then, ask them to change the PRO Act so that it uses the IRS standard, not the ABC Test. You can share data that shows most independent contractors want to remain as such. However, keep in mind that your individual stories affect lawmakers more than a bunch of statistics do. Share the message widely with other freelancers. Write op-eds for your local newspapers. Share on social media and retweet #IRSNotABC tweets and posts. In September, the Freelancers Union (which is a nonprofit, not a union) held a webinar with Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, a Democrat from New York who supports unions and the PRO Act. However, Schumer acknowledged in the webinar that he recognizes the problems AB5 caused in California and said he is willing to work with freelancers on the PRO Act. This was a huge acknowledgement. Let’s hold him to that promise. (See press release in resources below.) Paul Hellyer is one of Canada’s best known and most controversial politicians. First elected in 1949, he was the youngest cabinet minister appointed to Louis S. St. Laurent’s government eight years later. He subsequently held senior posts in the governments of Lester B. Pearson and Pierre E. Trudeau, who defeated him for the Liberal Party leadership in 1968. The following year, after achieving the rank of senior minister, which was later designated Deputy Prime Minister, Hellyer resigned from the Trudeau cabinet on a question of principle related to housing. Although Hellyer is best known for the unification of the Canadian Armed Forces and for his 1968 chairmanship of the Task Force on Housing and Urban Development, he has maintained a life-long interest in macroeconomics. Through the years, as a journalist and political commentator, he has continued to fight for economic reforms and has written several books on the subject. A man of many interests, Hellyer’s ideas are not classroom abstractions. He was born and raised on a farm and his business experience includes manufacturing, retailing, construction, land development, tourism and publishing. He has also been active in community affairs including the arts and studied voice at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto. His multi-faceted career, in addition to a near-lifetime in politics, gives Hellyer a rare perspective on what has gone wrong with world economies. In recent years he has become interested in the extraterrestrial presence and their superior technology that we have been emulating. In September 2005 he became the first person of cabinet rank in the G8 group of countries to state unequivocally “UFO’s are as real as the airplanes flying overhead.” To purchase one of Mr. Hellyers Books visit: http://www.paulhellyerweb.com/ Follow Us: Instagram: www.instagram.com/crossborderpodcast/ Twitter: twitter.com/CrossBorderPod Facebook : www.facebook.com/CrossBorderInterviewPodcast/ Website: www.crossborderinterviews.ca/ Cross Border Interviews is owned by Miranda, Brown & Associates Inc.
In September 2020, Indian lawmakers approved three controversial agriculture bills amidst an uproar on the floor of Parliament. That uproar would soon manifest outside of Parliament as tens of thousands of farmers took to the streets on the outskirts of Delhi to protest the passage of these laws. Today, the government and the farmers are locked in a months-long standoff, with everyone from the Supreme Court to foreign governments weighing in on the confrontation. To discuss the farm laws—the motivations behind them, their likely consequences, and the political fallout—Milan sits down with two experts on Indian agriculture, Shoumitro Chatterjee of Penn State University and Mekhala Krishnamurthy of Ashoka University and the Centre for Policy Research. The three discuss the state of Indian agriculture, the motivations behind the new laws, the anxieties that have fueled the protests, and possible compromises that can resolve the current impasse. If you have been watching the protests in India unfold but are struggling to make sense of them, this episode will help you fill in the blanks. In September of 1931, the Irving family, James, Margaret and their 13-year-old daughter Voirrey, began hearing a persistent scratching, rustling, and animal-like noises behind the walls of their farmhouse located on the Isle of Man. It didn't take long for a creature to introduce himself as Gef, and inform them that he was an "extra extra clever" mongoose from India that was born in 1852. He soon became part of the family and would tell them if they had a guest arriving soon, would turn the fire out in the stove at night if they forgot, or even wake those that had overslept in the morning. The Irvings would put bananas, chocolates and biscuits in a saucer that was suspended from the ceiling that Gef would take when no one was looking. The story of Gef became very popular in the press, where many journalists tried to catch a glimpse of him, and in 1935, several psychic investigators and paranormal researchers investigated the case of Gef. In the end, not a single one saw or even heard Gef, which led them to believe that he was the result of a hoax perpetuated by the daughter, with the family assisting in it. There were also some who believed that Gef might be a ghost or poltergeist that was haunting the family.Join us on episode 109 to hear more about the peculiar case of Gef, the talking mongoose! In September of 2016, a NASA spacecraft known as OSIRIS REx began its journey to the near Earth asteroid Bennu, an ancient asteroid believed to be a remnant from the dawn of the solar system. Late last year, OSIRIS REx successfully collected and stored a surface sample from Bennu completing one more of several successful mission objectives on its journey. In this episode we are joined by Heather Enos, the Deputy Principal Investigator for the OSIRIS REx mission. Heather Enos has a long history in project management with University of Arizona space missions. Before OSIRIS REx, she was previously Project Manager for the 2001 Mars Odyssey Gamma Ray Spectrometer team as well as the Project Manager for the 2007 Phoenix Thermal Evolve Gas Analyzer. In this discussion Heather speaks to some of the OSIRIS REx missions greatest challenges and how her team adapted and responded on the fly. Heather talks about why her science team is interested in Bennu and we get first hand insight into what it takes to lead large interdisciplinary teams on NASA Missions. Before listening to this talk, I encourage you to follow some of the links in the description, particularly the video of the OSIRIS REx Tagsam sample collection. This week on Real Talk with Rachael, I'm talking with Tom Lane, Dallas campus pastor at Gateway Church about his book Tested and Approved: 21 Lessons for Life and Ministry. Tom Lane graduated with a bachelor’s degree in accounting and business administration from the University of Nebraska at Omaha. Prior to Gateway, he was in pastoral ministry at Trinity Fellowship for 27 years where he held a variety of positions, and prior to that, he worked in corporate settings in Omaha, Oklahoma City, and Amarillo. Tom joined the staff of Gateway in January 2004 as executive senior pastor. In 2015, his church oversight responsibilities moved to his son Todd, and Tom prepared to oversee the newly formed Gateway Apostolic Ministry. In September 2015, he also accepted the role of campus pastor to lead the launch of our Dallas Campus in March 2016. Today, Tom serves as the lead executive senior pastor of Apostolic Ministry and is the campus pastor of our Dallas Campus along with serving as an elder of Gateway Church. Under Pastor Robert’s leadership, and along with Pastor Jimmy Evans, he leads in executing Gateway’s vision and developing strategies locally, nationally, and internationally, which impacts and influences the Church. As one of the elders, he also helps provide spiritual and fiduciary governance for Gateway’s ministries. Key points from today's conversation: “Neither ministry nor life is fair and when you focus on fairness, neither one will ever make sense to you. Life must be based on faith no matter what you do.” It's natural to want justice, but it's more important to surrender to God's will. He sets our days, so there's no need to compare yourself to others. God is the secret to success. Every blessing, provision, and good thing comes from Him. Take each decision to Him and trust Him when He closes doors. His plans are to prosper you. Success means to fulfill the full measure of God’s plan for our life. It's a process that activates our faith. Hear, believe, and obey. You have to be willing to obey when you don’t have the assurance of the outcome. God will give you enough, but at some point, you’ll have to leap and trust Him to catch you. Prophetic ministry is not for the elite, it’s for everyone. It's a demonstration of God inserting himself in your life through others. People need to know that God is real, alive, and active in our lives. Resources mentioned - He Still Speaks; The God I Never Knew, Tested and Approved Mentor Playbook Let's get real practical: I have 2 simple action steps for you from this episode. When a scabies outbreak among a gorilla population was linked back to the hygiene habits of the local communities they lived near, Dr. Gladys Kalema-Zikusoka quickly learned that the conservation of the species was even more intimately linked to humans than previously thought. As a response, she created the NGO Conservation Through Public Health and her multidisciplinary approach focuses on preventing and controlling disease transmission between closely genetically related species such as people and gorillas, cattle and buffalo, and promoting a better quality of life that reduces local communities’ dependence on fragile habitats to meet their basic needs. Her methods have garnered worldwide attention as she has received numerous awards, including but not limited to the Whitley Gold Award for outstanding leadership in grassroots nature conservation and the Jane Goodall Institute Award for Conservation. In September, she became the first African to win the 2020 Aldo Leopold Award from the American Society of Mammologists for outstanding contributions to the conservation of mammals and their habitats. With zoonotic diseases projected to become more prevalent in the years to come, her work and the lessons she's learned is invaluable to each and every one of us.
The Transport Minister says he deliberately chose not to mince his words in a scathing letter over the state of Wellington's $6.4 billion transport plan.Michael Wood sent a letter to those in charge of Let's Get Wellington Moving (LGWM) after an internal review revealed the project that's meant to tackle the city's growing congestion is at risk of failing. He told them the situation is "unacceptable".But Michael Wood is less interested in finger pointing than he is in getting LGWM actually moving. After demanding officials come up with a plan to resolve weaknesses within a fortnight, Wood has also asked for regular progress reports to come straight to his desk.LGWM is a three-way partnership between Wellington City Council, Greater Wellington Regional Council, and Waka Kotahi NZTA.The plan includes doubling the Mt Victoria Tunnel, mass rapid transit from the city to the airport, bus priority, and better walking and cycling. An internal review, publicly released last week, found LGWM has leadership problems, a detrimental culture, is inadequately resourced, and ultimately at risk of failing to deliver.Wood sent a very frank letter to the LGWM Partnership Board saying the issues are "unacceptable"."Wellingtonians have been waiting too long on progress to unlock our capital city's potential", Wood wrote.Asked today what message Wood wanted to send in the letter he said: "I chose not to mince my words quite deliberately"."I think the views of people in Wellington are really clear on this, that after quite a long time in digestion, after a lot of consultation, it is time to move on to delivering projects that are needed to give people in Wellington real transport choices."He thought the message was received well and confirmed he has spoken to both Greater Wellington Regional Council chairman Daran Ponter and Mayor Andy Foster.Wood has given the Board two weeks to come up with a plan to sort things out, including recruiting staff, a strategic communications plan, and improving the culture and cohesion of the team.He said he would need to see a meaningful and specific response to weaknesses identified in the review to give him confidence the project was under control. The main thing that concerned him in the review was the lack of cohesion, Wood said."People are still seeing themselves as working for one of the three entities, I think if we get that fixed, that's going to go a long way to resolving some of the other issues."We need to make sure this is a project which has strong cohesion in which people are working together and aren't siloed in their separate agencies."Wood also wanted to see a clear plan from officials around implementing "low hanging fruit"- projects around walking, cycling, and public transport.Following the impending meeting Wood said he would put in place "very regular" reporting straight to his desk so he knows exactly what's happening.Asked whether the LGWM programme director should resign over the situation, the Minister said any matters of employment were for the governance entity to make and not for him."Everyone has to take accountability for the fact that we haven't had the delivery that we want. I'm mainly focused on how we get things moving now rather than finger pointing."In September last year LGWM programme director Andrew Body confirmed the project was undertaking an internal review.Conducted by three independent reviewers, focused on governance, a gap assessment, people and culture, the baseline programme, and systems and processes. The review was considered a standard process for a project of LGWM's size.

190: Benjamin Breckheimer: Former Staff Sergeant who was blown up by an IED, then overcame his injury plus divorce and suicidal thoughts to regain his drive by becoming the 1st Purple Heart recipient to climb the Seven Summits. Benjamin Breckheimer Did Benjamin Breckheimer always want to be in the military? “When Desert Storm was unfolding, I wasn’t even 7-years-old. I just remember watching all of the news footage and I was just amazed by the nighttime footage of the raid, and I was like, if there is ever a war I want to be a part of it. Unfortunately, tragic events of September 11th, 2001 happened and I graduated from high school in June of 2002 and right out of high school I decided to join the military. I didn’t exactly know what I was going to do in the military.” On this episode of Finding Your Summit Podcast, we talk with Benjamin Breckheimer why he felt compelled to join the military. “My dream as a kid for an occupation was to be a surgeon. But I didn’t want to go to eight years of college after just getting out of 12 years of school that I didn’t really want to do. I scored pretty well on the ASVAB. It is the military test, the aptitude test basically. It gives you certain engineering or medical, science sort of things. I don’t remember what my score was. But I remember the recruiter saying, just let me know what you want to do. You can pretty much do anything. My exact words out of my mouth were, ‘I want to be as close to the surgeon as I can without having to go to college,’ and operating specialist is what they came up with.” What You Will Learn: What did being on reserves consist of for Benjamin? “As a reservist, you do the first weekend of every month. You do drill weekends, which are your training weekends. Then two weeks out of the summer you go do training in a military installation. I was in Wisconsin. So, we would go to Fort McCoy for two weeks and just do training for those two weeks. The unit I waa with, they actually deployed to Afghanistan prior to me arriving at that unit, and they weren’t slotted to go back overseas for another two or three years. I just never got that opportunity while I was with them. So, I just asked my Company Commander if he would let me go active duty, and he signed the paperwork.” Benjamin Breckheimer discusses getting deployed to Baddad. “In September of 2005, I got exactly what I was hoping for. I got to deploy to Bagdad, Iraq for a year, and as an operating room specialist the civilian world would be a surgical tech. So, you assist a surgeon in surgeries, hand him the tools, retrack, anything they really needed. It was the first time I ever saw an individual pass on my operating room table. You know, this thought came through my head that it wasn’t fair that this kid, and I say kid lightly because we were all young at that age, I would like to believe, was dieing for me. He was out fighting for me and I was safe in the green zone. I wasn’t out on the front lines or anything like that, and it just didn’t seem fair that he was giving his life while I was safe.” What was it like for Benjamin Breckheimer after a year in Bagdad? “I wanted to do more, I would like to believe. I just felt like I wasn;t doing enough. I didn’t feel like I was doing my part, so to say. Once I got back from Iraq I pretty much had my mind set on changing my job in the military and I ended up reclassifying as a Calvary Scout. That is completely in the opposite end of being in the medical field. A Calvary Scout, you do reconacense, surveillance. You make targets for overhead bombings. So, you are on the frontlines doing this stuff. The saying that the grassing isn’t always greener on the other side is true. It was a tough job.” What is the difference between when he went from Afghanistan to Iraq? “When we landed in Iraq, I really felt like there was an appreciation. It was a big city. Baghdad is a huge city. So, there is a lot of infrastructure around, and when we arrived in Candahar it felt like it was very desolate, just more of a desert. I’m not going to say wasteland, more desert than city infrastructure.” How did Benjamin Breckheimer’s injury take place? “A stryker vehicle is basically an eight-wheeled tank. There are four wheels on each side. It could hold up to 10 individuals in this vehicle, aside from the driver. We were actually out on a mission early in the morning on September 13th to go pay for damages that were done to an irrigation system that a farmer had. I was the very last vehicle in a four-vehicle convoy. Just following the tracks of the vehicle in front of me. I was either too far left or too far right from those tracks and it was lights out. It felt like I hit a brick wall literally. It was crazy because you don't see it coming. It just happened. I like the fact that I am able to remember everything . But I think more so because I was the only individual to get wounded. In all, I had a concussion. My right eardrum was blown, a couple vertebrae fracture, mild TBI, minor pelvic fracture. Both of my femurs were fractured, and my right leg was literally hanging by a strip of skin.” When You Get Knocked Down Keep Going How many surgeries did he have between flown back to the states and the surgery that he had in Afghanistan? “I got rushed into the emergency room and that was the first time I felt really terrified. I went from working on the side of the operating table to end up being on it. It was very scary for me. It really brought me back to how the individuals in Iraq felt when we were rolling them into the ER. From the point of impact, I had surgery done on both of my femurs and my lower right leg, which they put external fixators on, which is, they basically pin in your bone and then they have a carbon rod to stabilize your bone and I had that surgery done right away.” Finding His Summit in Mountaineering During this episode of Finding Your Summit Podcast, Benjamin Breckheimer talks about how he got into mountaineering, “I was really stepping out of my comfort zone, which I think a lot of people in those dark situations might need to do. But the mountaineering, like you said, it took me a while before I realised that I was climbing for other reasons. I will start by saying this, the very first mountain I submitted was Mount Elbrus in Russia.” Links to Additional Resources: Mark Pattison: markpattisonnfl.com Emilia’s Everest - The Lhotse Challenge: https://www.markpattisonnfl.com/philanthropy/ Benjamin Breckheimer: Website | Instagram

David begins this show by sharing a story about a young lady who was involved in an auto accident. Fortunately, a good Samaritan came by and freed her from her car before it burst in to flames. The two are later connected. David shares the details of how it unfolded. David then discuss an article CNBC published an article last year titled, The Fed is buying some of the biggest companies’ bonds, raising questions over why. The points the article covered are:The Federal Reserve is continuing to buy corporate bonds, following up on a pledge it made in March.Corporate America titans such as Microsoft, Apple, Visa, and Home Depot have been among the beneficiaries.Questions have been raised over “moral hazard” as the Fed buys debt from companies that don’t seem to need the central bank’s help.Indirectly through exchange trade funds the government holds investments in companies like Apple and Goldman Sachs also. The government has even purchased bonds of speculative-grade.So, what’s the government doing? The Federal Reserve seeks to stabilizes financial markets during periods of major economic volatility. This is commonly referred to as quantitative easing (QE), which is the technical name. America is currently in itself fourth installment of quantitative easing. The government bought trillions of dollars of bonds after the Great Recession began from 2008 to 2014. During that time the Fed accumulated $4.5 trillion in assets. In September 2019, the Federal Reserve began conducting quantitative easing. This was six months before Covid 19 came to the forefront of most of our minds. March 2020 the government announced it would begin purchasing $700 billion in assets. And quantitative easing continues today. Some commentators are saying it will be permanent. Nobody knows if QE is sustainable or how long it will last. No one is privy to knowing the future. But what I do know is that our philosophy in how we manage money is incredibly beneficial in times like these.Active management of stock market investments combined with buckets of money that are safe from losses may be beneficial for a retiree. In September of 2020 over 860,000 women left the workforce in the United States. This number on its own is staggering, and this week on the show Shaunna and Lisa are drawing connections to how the disproportionate toll of the pandemic on women might come to affect their participation in endurance sport in the coming months and years. They explore the nuance of what it means to be a woman who participates in “frivolous” activities like triathlon or cycling, the historical marginalization of women in sport and in the workplace, and how this has led to a gap in wealth and economic power between men and women. Despite endurance sport rarely being a mandatory activity for any gender, women seem to be judged more harshly if they participate in activities for their personal enjoyment and well-being, especially if they have children...and even more so if it has a price tag attached. This episode will analyze the connections among the socioeconomic status of women, antiquated gender norms, disproportionate household responsibilities for women and the emotional labor on women who are dedicated to an endurance sport lifestyle.

"I'd love to wake up in the morning and not think about it" In September 1961, over 150 Irish soldiers serving with the United Nations in the Congo were besieged by mercenaries while stationed in the town of Jadotville. Over the course of five days, the 'A' company survived ground and air attacks with little food, little water and ever depleting ammunition. After being forced to surrender, they were taken as prisoners of war for several weeks before being returned to camp where they continued their duties before returning to Ireland. Upon their return home, the Jadotville soldiers were dismissed as cowards and to date, have yet to receive Military Medals of Gallantry as recommended by their commander Pat Quinlan. The story was told in the 2016 Netflix film 'The Siege of Jadotville' which starred Jamie Dornan and reignited the push for recognition for the soldiers. Tadhg Quinn from Abbeyfeale in Limerick was one of the men who served in Jadotville, he spoke to Dermot and Dave about what it was like on the ground and what he'd like to see happen fifty years on. That’s why people say, “hurt people will hurt people.” Tune in as we speak all about Molly-Anne’s 800-mile longboard trip. And so after 17 years in the job Peter is leaving. Peter Lawwell was first employed by Celtic as the club's Financial Controller from 1990 to 1991 under then Chief Executive Terry Cassidy. In September 2003, he returned to Celtic succeeding Ian McLeod as Chief Executive. The job title was changed for Lawwell to Executive Director, Head of Operations as many of the previous Chief Executives had performed poorly in that role. Arsenal were interested in appointing Lawwell as their chief executive in 2008, but Lawwell rejected their approach. Lawwell has been credited with increasing revenue, reducing debt and is considered a tough transfer negotiator. He has attracted criticism since 2008, however, as Rangers had won three championships in a row. In particular, Celtic fans cite the club's refusal to increase their offer for steven Fletcher in January 2009, after which Rangers overhauled Celtic to win the 2008/09 SPL. In 2010 it was reported that Lawwell earned a wage of more than £700,000 a year, after receiving a 25% rise from his previous contract for the 2008–09 season. Everything at Celtic changed in 2012 when Rangers went to the wall and this saw the club commence an incredible period of dominance, winning trophies and building cash in the bank for a rainy day, We had the Brendan era followed by the appointment of Neil Lennon in the showers and for many, the diasters of the current season were sewn on that day. Peter leaves and Hullbhoy and I assess his legacy. Enjoy…
