Welcome to the daily304 – your window into Wonderful, Almost Heaven, West Virginia. Today is Monday, Jan. 6, 2025. Weirton's Theo Yianni's serves up bangin' good Greek food…a new initiative aims to attract economic investment to historic buildings in rural communities…and Wheeling's Streetscape beautifies the city and creates a foundation for future investments…on today's daily304. #1 – From WV LIVING – Shawn Mihellis may tell you it was never his plan to own a popular Greek restaurant in Weirton, but the winding road that led him there seems to suggest otherwise. One: His parents came to America by boat, making Mihellis the first in his family to be born in this country. Two: They eventually migrated to Weirton, a town in the Northern Panhandle with a large Greek population. Three: Back in his younger days, he ran an after-hours bar in his basement where he'd make and serve his own Greek gyros. He went to college to pursue a teaching degree, but the restaurant business called him back. He went on to open Theo Yianni's, a little Greek restaurant in the middle of town, 13 years ago—and that small spot quickly became a hit among the locals. Read more: https://wvliving.com/bangin-good-food/ #2 – From WV EXPLORER – An initiative designed to attract economic investment to historic buildings and districts in rural communities is being introduced to Congress by senators Mark Warner of Virginia and Shelley Moore Capito of West Virginia. The Rural Historic Tax Credit Improvement Act will significantly reduce financial burdens for rural homeowners and developers in historic districts and where buildings are otherwise listed on the national register. Capito said the act will help rural communities that otherwise must compete with high-traffic development areas. As early as the 1940s, many towns across America began losing commerce to larger cities along major transportation routes. Read more: https://wvexplorer.com/2024/12/20/west-virginia-tax-credit-benefit-rural-commmunities/ #3 – From WV EXECUTIVE – In 2022, Governor Jim Justice approved the bid award of $31.9 million for the Wheeling Streetscape Project. This project, scheduled to be completed by summer 2025, will beautify downtown Wheeling by adding decorative traffic signals, plants and trees as well as brickwork along Main and Market streets and between 10th and 16th streets. ADA-compliant curb cuts and widened sidewalks are also part of the project. Josh Jefferson, president and CEO of the Regional Economic Development Partnership, says the project has created a foundation for future investment and supports the city's existing business community. In recent years, Wheeling and its surrounding cities have seen new businesses arise, such as Form Energy, Newbridge Academy for Kids, Waterfront Hall and Bridge Tavern & Grill. State officials celebrate the opening of the West Virginia Turnpike's new Beckley Travel Plaza…the WVDNR launches a study of the state's elusive snowshoe hare…and WV's Mountaineer Heritage Season for deer, bear, and turkey will open on January 9…on today's daily304. #1 – From WVVA– Gov. Jim Justice joined other local and state leaders last week to celebrate the opening of the new West Virginia Turnpike's Beckley Travel Plaza. Located off of exit 45 on I-77, the plaza closed last February to start demolition and construction. The updated facility now includes a Wendy's, Starbucks, Popeyes and Mountain State Market that features local and regional gourmet foods, a grab-and-go food bar, and much more. The building also includes a Tamarack Artisan Shop that highlights work from West Virginia artists. Along with this project the revamp effort included Mercer County's Bluestone Travel Plaza that is still under construction. Read more: https://www.wvva.com/2024/12/31/beckley-travel-plaza-celebrates-opening/ #2 – From WVDNR – In the quiet, snowy forests of West Virginia, the elusive snowshoe hare can be found hopping across the landscape. Known for their white seasonal coat and oversized feet, this remarkable small game species plays an important role in our state's high-elevation ecosystems. However, little is known about their population here. That's why West Virginia Division of Natural Resources biologists and researchers at West Virginia University have teamed up to shine a light on this secretive species. Population density studies are also essential because they show how animals use their habitat and how available resources meet their needs. This information helps wildlife managers create and improve young forest habitats, which benefit hares and other game species. Additionally, knowing where these animals live helps managers anticipate how they might react to future climate changes, ensuring better long-term conservation strategies. Stay updated on WVDNR's research efforts and consider supporting wildlife conservation initiatives through license purchases and donations. Gov. Jim Justice and the state's Economic Development Authority agreed to invest $75 million in taxpayer funds to attract an $800 million expansion from Nucor. That $800 million will be invested along state Route 2 in Mason County and at Nucor's docks in Wheeling. Justice says the new investment will produce 100 additional jobs. Bear, a 10-month-old golden retriever, is Huntington East Middle School's new therapy dog, making him the final therapy dog of the Friends with Paws program. Cathy Justice began the program as a way of raising student morale, boosting attendance and raising test scores. She said the program took inspiration from a pair of Cabell County elementary schools four years ago. Haven, a labradoodle, shares time at Spring Hill and Salt Rock Elementary schools. “We wanted a dog in the schools because we thought you want your schools to be like family. What makes a home a family? A dog,” Salt Rock Elementary Principal Becky Ferguson said. Read more: https://www.wowktv.com/news/west-virginia/friends-with-paws-program-ends-after-delivering-45-therapy-dogs-to-schools-across-west-virginia/ #3 – From WVDNR – Some of the most popular game fish in West Virginia like swimming in waters with ample woody cover from downed trees and other vegetation. And when fish are happy anglers are happy. That's why the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources is always looking for creative ways to improve fish habitat and the angling experience. One method is taking discarded live Christmas trees and using them to improve habitat at popular fishing locations, such as Beech Fork and East Lynn lakes. The trees are anchored so that they sink to the bottom and stand upright. By doing it this way, the trees stay in place and create ample cover. This gives small, young fish an opportunity to grow, which increases the overall fish population. The trees also provide ambush spots for larger fish and serve as attractors experienced anglers can use to their advantage. This holiday season, the DNR is accepting your discarded Christmas trees at the following locations: Ices Ferry in Morgantown -- through January 10 Claudia Workman Wildlife Education Center at the Forks of Coal State Natural Area -- through January 6 (This location will have signs directing people to the tree donation pile.) Only whole, real trees will be accepted. All lights and decorations must be removed prior to donation. Check the DNR social media pages for more information. A chapel, five cottages, a bathhouse, a spring house and a store building were also built of native stone and completed at around the same time. The career connector job board is a free service for any West Virginia company looking to expand their team or fill open roles. The job board features jobs from all counties across the state and from any industry. The Generational Talent Search program is a talent recruitment service that helps West Virginia employers connect with top talent through a streamlined and efficient approach. Jim Justice and First Lady Cathy Justice invite all West Virginians to honor members of the United States military and first responders by submitting photos to be showcased on two recognition trees that will be displayed during this year's holiday season. This year's recognition trees will be located in the west rotunda of the main Capitol building, along with a third tree decorated by Gold Star mothers and families to honor their loved ones whose lives were sacrificed while serving our country. All photos, along with the submission form and tag, must be received no later than Monday, November 25, 2024. He and his wife, Allyson, were tired of the stresses of urban life, so they researched incentives for remote workers. The Ascend West Virginia program—and the city of Elkins—checked all the boxes for the Condras and their three young children. They love the outdoor activities, the conveniences of city life, and a welcoming and supportive community. Remote workers also have access to a Common Door right downtown—a “shared workspace community” that combines the productivity that an office allows with the flexibility and collaboration remote jobs require. Lisa Wood, executive director of the Elkins/Randolph Chamber of Commerce, says Elkins has the “trifecta” for vibrant, growing small cities—a hospital, a college, and a riverfront. The city also boasts a lively and eclectic food scene, plenty of arts and culture, and it's the gateway to the Monongahela National Forest and all its recreational opportunities. West Virginia's vaccination requirements for school children are what a lot of health experts call the gold standard. Only a medical exemption will get you out of school vaccine requirements. On this episode of Us & Them we look at a recent legislative proposal that would have changed that. It would have exempted homeschooled kids from vaccinations and let private and parochial schools set their own standards. The bill came from some parents who want relief from what they call the state's oppressive compulsory vaccination laws. While the bill passed through the legislature, it did not become law after Gov. Jim Justice vetoed the measure. We'll find out about this latest chapter in a state with one of the nation's most robust vaccine histories.

It's Thursday, November 7th, A.D. 2024. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard on 125 radio stations and at www.TheWorldview.com. I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Jonathan Clark and Adam McManus 7 of 11 Southeast Asian nations persecute Christians International Christian Concern reports seven out of eleven Southeast Asian nations persecute Christians. Those nations are Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, and Vietnam. In Brunei and Cambodia, officials prohibit Christians from sharing their faith. Burma's military often targets Christians with violence. Believers face blasphemy charges in Malaysia and Indonesia for criticizing Islam. And authorities in Laos and Vietnam try to force Christians to renounce their faith. There are also at least 45 Christians who are missing, detained, or imprisoned across Burma, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Vietnam. Hebrews 13:3 says, “Remember the prisoners as if chained with them—those who are mistreated—since you yourselves are in the body also.” Donald Trump wins in a landslide Donald Trump won the U.S. presidential election in a landslide as results from the polls came in yesterday. Trump secured 292 electoral votes as of Wednesday, according to the Associated Press. This surpasses the 270 electoral votes necessary to win. Trump also secured the popular vote with over 72 million votes. Trump won the swing states of Georgia, Michigan, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin. The Associated Press had not called Arizona or Nevada as of yesterday, but Trump was leading in both states. Trump addressed supporters following the victory, acknowledging God's protection on his life. TRUMP: “Many people have told me that God spared my life for a reason. (cheers) And that reason was to save our country and to restore America to greatness. Now, we are going to fulfill that mission together. We're going to fulfill that mission.” Proverbs 21:1 reminds us, “The king's heart is in the hand of the LORD, like the rivers of water; He turns it wherever He wishes.” Christians break out in worship after Trump victory speech Remarkably, right after Trump's victory speech, the crowd at the watch party at the Palm Beach Florida Convention Center burst out in spontaneous worship, singing “How Great Thou Art.” The video was captured on the phone of former New York State Rep. Ben Geller. Listen. CROWD: “O Lord my God, when I in awesome wonder consider all the worlds Thy hands have made. I see the stars. I hear the roaring thunder, Thy power throughout the universe displayed. “Then sings my soul, my Savior God to Thee. How great Thou art. How great Thou art. Then sings my soul, my Savior God to Thee. How great Thou art. How great Thou art.” (cheers) Kamala Harris' belated concession speech champions abortion After refusing to congratulate Trump on Election Night, after he had won the 270 electoral votes necessary, Kamala Harris delivered a concession speech at 4:00pm Eastern on November 6th at Howard University, her alma mater. HARRIS: “Earlier today, I spoke with President-elect Trump and congratulated him on his victory. (boos) I also told him that we will help him and his team with their transition and that we will engage in a peaceful transfer of power.” (cheers) She appeared to imply that she hopes to run for president again. HARRIS: “While I concede this election, I do not concede the fight that fueled this campaign.” (cheers) And, not surprisingly, she exhibited her greatest passion when she championed baby-killing in the womb. HARRIS: “I will never give up the fight for a future where Americans can pursue their dreams, ambitions and aspirations, where the women of America have the freedom to make decisions about their own body and not have their government telling them what to do.” (cheers) Republicans won control of the U.S. Senate Republicans also won control of the U.S. Senate following Tuesday's election. They now have 52 seats in the Senate, surpassing the necessary 50 seats for a majority. The GOP flipped seats in Montana, Ohio, and West Virginia where Tim Sheehy, Bernie Moreno, and Jim Justice were victorious respectively. Neither party has won control of the House of Representatives with 44 more races yet to be called as of Wednesday. Republicans had 202 seats and Democrats had 189 seats. A party needs at least 218 seats for a majority. 3 pro-abortion amendments failed, 7 passed Voters across 10 states also decided on abortion ballot initiatives on Tuesday. Pro-abortion constitutional amendments failed in Florida, Nebraska, and South Dakota. Tragically, similar pro-abortion amendments passed in Arizona, Colorado, Maryland, Missouri, New York, Montana, and Nevada. Stock market and Crytpo up after Trump's victory The stock market reacted positively to the news of Donald Trump becoming the 47th president of the United States. The Dow Jones Industrial Average surged 3.6%. The S&P 500 rose 2.5%, and the Nasdaq composite jumped 3%. Crypto also surged with Bitcoin reaching an all-time high of over $76,000. Boeing no longer bowing to sexual perversion Wokeness Bloomberg reports that Boeing is the latest high-profile corporation to end its diversity, equity, and inclusion department. The airplane manufacturer will instead focus on talent and employee experience. The change comes under Boeing's new Chief Executive Officer Kelly Ortberg who is cutting about 10% of the company's workforce. The change also comes as many U.S. companies face pressure from conservative activists to cut their diversity, equity, and inclusion programs. Billy Graham's birthday And finally, today is the anniversary of Billy Graham's birthday. He was born on November 7, 1918 in Charlotte, North Carolina. Graham was ordained as a Southern Baptist minister, becoming one of the greatest modern evangelists. He preached to almost a quarter billion people in person. His messages also reached millions more through radio, TV, and film. Listen to this excerpt of one of his sermons. GRAHAM: “David, the man after God's own heart, also became guilty of sin. He became guilty of adultery and guilty of murder, and he suffered for it the rest of his life. God forgave him, but the scars remained. “And many of you are trying to flee from God tonight. You know that you need a personal relationship with Christ. You're not sure that your sins are forgiven. You're not sure that if you died you'd go to Heaven. If you have a doubt about it, you ought to settle it this very night. You're fleeing from God.” Graham's Gospel crusades took him all over the world even behind the Iron Curtain and into China and North Korea. Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump is projected by multiple U.S. media outlets early Wednesday morning to win North Carolina and Georgia -- two of the seven key swing states, as votes continue to be counted across the country. With 16 Electoral College votes, North Carolina is the first of seven battleground states with a clear outcome. At least 270 Electoral College votes are needed to win the presidency.North Carolina has been a red state in recent years, except in 2008, when Barack Obama narrowly flipped it. Trump won the state both in 2016 and 2020.Trump won Georgia's 16 Electoral College votes in 2016 before the state narrowly shifted to Joe Biden in 2020.With Trump on track to take North Carolina and Georgia, Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris will probably need to secure all three "Blue Wall" states -- Pennsylvania, Michigan and Wisconsin -- to clinch victory. Trump flipped these three states in 2016, while Biden reclaimed them in 2020. Votes in these three states are still being counted.Meanwhile, Trump has been projected to win traditionally red states such as Ohio, Texas and Florida, while Harris has been projected to win traditionally blue states such as California and Colorado.Forty-eight states and Washington, D.C., allocate all their electoral votes to the candidate who wins the state's popular vote. Nebraska and Maine, however, distribute two electoral votes to the statewide winner and one electoral vote to the winner of the popular vote in each congressional district.Several U.S. media outlets projected that the Republican Party would regain control of the U.S. Senate early Wednesday after flipping two seats from the Democratic Party. The Republicans won seats in Ohio, where Bernie Moreno triumphed, and West Virginia, where Jim Justice emerged victorious. This election is widely regarded as one of the most divisive in American history. According to an annual survey recently released by the American Psychological Association, over 70 percent of U.S. adults expressed concern that the election results could lead to violence.Earlier on Tuesday, U.S. Capitol Police reported that officers arrested a man who attempted to enter the Capitol building, reeking of fuel and carrying potentially dangerous devices.U.S. federal and local officials also confirmed Tuesday that none of the multiple bomb threats sent to polling sites in several states were credible. Local media reports indicated that fake bomb threats were received in swing states such as Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, and Wisconsin -- states whose results have the potential to influence the final outcome of the presidential election.
West Virginia's Jim Justice wins election to the U.S. Senate, in a race that Republicans had called a "done deal." AP correspondent Jennifer King reports.

Just in time for the Gorge's annual Bridge Day celebration, Gov. Jim Justice joined Tourism Secretary Chelsea Ruby and officials with the West Virginia Division of Highways recently to welcome the additional 70 parking spaces at the Endless Wall Trail. Ruby said the DOH first came out and widened the portion of Lansing-Edmond Road the trail sits off of, making it safe for the public to create an additional 30 parking spots. Then, just recently, DOH crews created the additional 70 more spots from a completely dense forest adjacent to the trail. According to the Department of Tourism, the New River Gorge area sees about 2 million visitors a year. Though only 30 minutes from Interstate 79, Baker's Run Campground may feel remote due to how it tucks into the hills on the Elk River at Sutton Lake, and that's much of its allure. According to most versions of the once-famous tale, the ghost is that of Jacob Beamer, who was fond of moonlight walks. He met his end one night when he was hit by a train. For many years afterward, his ghost was said to appear to wanderers at night as it searched for his missing head. Need more than a ghost to have a good time? Sutton Lake has recently become famous for alleged sightings of a Bigfoot, and the whole of the region is renowned as the site of the crash landing of the Flatwoods Monster. The money will allow Form to speed up manufacturing at its first factory in Weirton, West Virginia, and continue research and development, officials say. Manufacturing long-duration energy storage at a commercial scale is seen as essential for lowering carbon emissions that are causing climate change, because it makes clean energy available when the sun isn't shining or the wind isn't blowing. Investment company T. Rowe Price led the funding. GE Vernova, a spin-off of General Electric's energy businesses, and several venture capital firms were also involved.
