She works, along with a dedicated Board of Directors and with volunteers to meet the direct service needs of the Holoprosencephaly community. Susan has always had an interest in community service and working in environments that have a strong mission to help ameliorate anxiety and isolation. Susan is currently the Executive Director of Families for HoPE, Inc., an Indianapolis based nonprofit serving children diagnosed with Holoprosencephaly and related rare brain malformations. Martin Theis stumbled into shamanism by chance when his best friend attended a workshop at the urging of his girlfriend. Intrigued by the concept of finding one's spirit animal through a totem animal journey, Martin embarked on his own spiritual journey. Prior to this, he had no involvement with spirituality and felt disconnected from the world. Martin specializes in drum-based shamanism, without the use of medicinal plants. He recognizes that there are various approaches and traditions within shamanism, such as plant or medicine-based practices. His mentor, who practices Southern American shamanism from the Peruvian Andes, introduced him to a different interpretation of the medicine wheel. Despite the variations, Martin found resonance in the teachings from the Lakota and chose to remain with that lineage. After returning to Germany, Martin continued to learn and grow under the guidance of his original mentor, who he has been with for over ten years. https://www.lighttrails.co/webinar-series/ On this episode of Spiritual Dope, host Brandon Handley welcomes guest Martin Theis to discuss their unique approach to life coaching through shamanic journeys. Martin explains how these journeys connect with the subconscious, higher self, and guidance, allowing clients to receive answers, guidance, and healing. Unlike traditional coaching, Martin emphasizes that they do not give instructions but instead focus on the client's stated intention. They believe strongly in this transformative work, as it helps individuals find their own solutions, tapping into the answers they already possess. Martin shares their own spiritual journey, highlighting the struggles and disconnection they experienced before discovering shamanism. They delve into the different approaches to shamanism, including plant-based or medicine-based journeys and the use of a drum. Martin's specific teachings come from Southern American shamanism from the Peruvian Andes, which incorporates unique power and transformational processes. They also touch on the importance of self-care for empathetic individuals and how to hold space for others without losing energy. Martin discusses the significance of shamanism in reconnecting with nature and spirituality, especially in Western cultures where spirituality has been lost. They emphasize the importance of breathing techniques in dealing with negative events and sensations in the body. Martin also shares their webinar offering, the 16-week system they use to work with individuals on specific intentions and shamanic journeys. Through their personal story of struggle and self-doubt, Martin highlights how shamanic journeys have the potential to help individuals in profound ways. Join Brandon and Martin as they dive deep into the transformative power of shamanic journeys on this episode of Spiritual Dope.

Hundreds of community colleges across the nation have committed to the Guided Pathways approach to boost completion rates and student success, but there are various challenges to building a program and keeping stakeholders on board. In this episode, I'm so happy to bring you a wisdom drop from Renee Craig-Marius, formerly the vice president of Student Services at Reedley College and now the executive vice president of educational programs at Gavilan College, who provides valuable insights into her institution's five-year journey with this model. “It's been a paradigm shift in how we see and serve our students. It's really ‘becoming the village' - as I call it -- for our students so they feel connected and supported and welcomed and engaged to complete their goals.” Tune in to hear Renee share lessons learned about getting stakeholders onboard early, establishing a solid foundation that will withstand change, and being comfortable with going slowly. Plus, she talks about the touchpoint opportunities Guided Pathways created that deepened connections with students. You're going to learn a lot.

Welcome back to America's leading higher education podcast! This is The EdUp Experience President Series Episode #72. In this episode, sponsored by MDT Marketing, we welcome Dr. Michael A. Baston President at Rockland Community College. Michael talks to us about the equitable realities of some communities, including financial fragility and lack of access to high wage and high opportunity jobs. This is why community colleges can be the colleges of first choice - to build bridges for students to further their education action and economic value. Michael says the caste system of higher ed must be addressed. Some consider community college to be “the 13th grade”, which is an uninformed and antiquated view of the work of community colleges. Finally Michael challenges all of us to take steps beyond statements when it comes to diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives. This episode is FIRE! Dr. Michael A. Baston is the 7th President of Rockland Community College. Dana and Dennis didn't have a bunch of preset topics for the day, but we did talk about... Our first email from a listener! We will talk about Guided Pathways and equity in future shows (hopefully with some colleagues who are leading the way on both of these fronts). Dennis mentioned the book Redesigning America's Community Colleges during this segment. Dennis went over some of the topics from the CCCSFAAA executive board meeting earlier this week. The deadline to submit your Intent to Create form for the Financial Aid Multi-Media Showcase (FAMMS) has been extended to FRIDAY, OCTOBER 30th! Dennis's "I Dare You to Read" selection is A Mind at Home With Itself by Byron Katie. He hasn't read it yet, but comedian Pete Holmes interviewed Ms. Katie on his You Made It Weird podcast. Interesting - and very useful - insight into how just four questions can make your life better. Find out more about CCCSFAAA at cccsfaaa.org. Follow CCCSFAAA on Twitter at @CCCSFinaidAssoc. Lorain County Community College has unlocked impressive results in their work with Achieving The Dream, Completion By Design, Guided Pathways, and a number of other student success initiatives. Their president, Marcia Ballinger, reflects on their journey of transformation and the roadmap (data) that helped them become student ready. She shares what they learned along the way and how they became more focused than ever on what matters most for students inside and outside of the classroom. Today, they’re designing a student experience with the end in mind -- and their outcomes prove it.
In Part 2, I explore the personal reasons for why a student might drop out with “F-Everything” Paul Lopez. Paul dropped out of school when he was 18. Back then, he didn’t know what he wanted to do, so he left school and moved up to the bay with his sister to get a full time job. Now he’s back, returning to school at C.C.S.F. at 22 years old. I told him about the high drop out rate at Community Colleges, and he told me he feels like a number. We’ll also meet the students from S.M.A.C. (students making a change), a student group on campus advocating for the rights of the school’s minority populations (and everyone else’s too). 80% of C.C. students in California are placed into remedial classes, and S.M.A.C. is not happy about it. It’s not just personal, or existential reasons for why so many students are dropping out. The system itself discourages students by preventing them from taking college level courses until they repeat High School Math and English. No wonder it takes most students (four out of five) more than four years to graduate. Thankfully, the C.C.S.F. administration has been made aware of the problem (thank you S.M.A.C.), and is implementing new systems, such as Guided Pathways, to channel students through college in a more efficient manner. I had the chance this week to talk with Denise King, Vice-President for Academic Affairs at Cleveland State Community College. She talks about the need these days to supplement the perspective of an educator with analytical and data tools that help explain the environment we’re working in, and come up with solutions to the challenges we’re dealing with. This was our first attempt at a remote interview, where we weren't both sitting in the same room, and I appreciate Denise's great attitude as we tried something new with technology!
