Both roles require the ability to guide and inspire others, often in situations where the path forward is unclear. Jason Cutter, Chief Transformation Officer at Cutter Consulting Group's background is a testament to his unique approach to sales and leadership. With analytical upbringing Cutter initially pursued a degree in marine biology, preferring the company of sharks to people. Presented by Lisa Bishop Do you express genuine appreciation for others? I am examining 5 habits of an extraordinary leader. And today is the fourth habit: show appreciation. Gary Chapman's book The Five Languages of Appreciation in the Workplace shares a statistic that 65% of North Americans reported they had not received recognition or appreciation at their workplace in the past year. And while 51% of managers believe they do a good job of recognizing employees for work well done, only 17% of employees believe their manager actually does a good job of recognizing them[1]. Clearly, something is off! Data shows 79% of employees will quit their jobs due to a lack of appreciation (Zippia.com), while employees who feel valued are motivated to do their best work[2]. How regularly do you show appreciation in the workplace? It's been said encouragement is oxygen to the soul. Just as every person has inherent value, every human being has a desire (whether they will admit it or not) to feel valued and appreciated; it's one of the deepest and most basic human needs. While it's been proven there is a bottom-line benefit to organizations for fostering a gratitude culture in the workplace, the buck doesn't stop there. As a leader, and especially as a follower of Jesus, you are entrusted with tapping into the potential of the people in your care, helping them unleash their gifts and talents. This is a different mentality than, “Just do your job.” You have a high calling for cultivating a work environment that is built on an attitude of trust and to inspire and not to embrace the old “command and control” mindset. How can you genuinely show appreciation? Don't just show gratitude for what people do, show appreciation for who they are. Be specific, rather than general, saying “Hey, good job on that project,” doesn't point out what you specifically valued. Instead, it might sound something like this. “Hey Jim, I just wanted to say I really appreciated your attention to detail on the presentation last week. You do your work with excellence, and you bring a lot of heart and passion to the team.” When showing appreciation, go beyond pointing out a person's performance to acknowledging their intrinsic value too. Dr. Paul White says, “Even the hardest heart will soften and respond to a freely given ‘cup of water' of appreciation—reviving their spirit and creating new growth.” How will you make showing genuine appreciation a leadership habit in your life? Who is someone in your workplace you will encourage this week? -- [1] Chapman, G. D., White, P. E., & White, P. (2012). In this episode, Gert gears away from the usual technical topics, SEO and marketing to make way for what is important in any business. And that is the topic that touches on the Employee Value Proposition (EVP). The world has changed immensely post pandemic and since remote work has been how the majority of businesses do their business now, the emotional aspect has been set aside. For example, leaders are not able to see if their employee is having a bad day at the moment, they just see the result - the inferior work they did.  Gert's guest for Episode 122 is Kevin D. Monroe, who as a mentor explored how showing gratitude can have an immense impact in the workplace. In this ever changing world, gratitude is needed now, more than ever. He encourages leaders to tap into the power of gratitude to be able to know the people's feelings, what every employee wants and whether they feel being valued.  This episode is the first of something different in Seoleverage.com/podcast. One hundred years of research tells us that a bump in salary does not impact employee engagement. In fact, MIT recently published findings showing that how appreciated employees feel has three times more influence on their decision to stay or leave a job than compensation. Not only does this reduce the cost of turnover, but companies that pay attention to their human capital outperform others. Dr. Paul White joins Kevin to discuss the 5 Languages of Appreciation in the workplace. These include Words of Affirmation, Quality Time, Acts of Service, Tangible Gifts, and Physical Touch. The implementation of appreciation isn't a top-down process. It starts with education, creating a shared language among team members, and then grows naturally. It's about connecting people and recognizing them for who they are, not just their work. Spring is almost here! Dr. John is really enjoying his retirement and his time to really dig deep into important topics. One of the most crucial things you can do for your practice is to make sure that you have a team that is motivated. We are going to talk about how to build a team that runs well together in a simple efficient way that doesn't cost a lot. We talk about resolving conflict by having truthful honest conversations. We also talk about how staff conflict can drag the whole team down. Breakthrough can be found on the other side of the conflict. Conflict is an unmet need expressed poorly. We dive into finding those unmet needs and having a dream staff in a harmonious environment.    Show Highlights [06:39] Dr. John shares an office visit where two staff members developed their own little tandem team of two in an office of eight staff members. These two people are creating a negative environment. It's time to get them to refocus and identify the shift. [07:54] The entire staff needs to work together and be honest and truthful with each other.  [10:03] Ask them to share the problem that has splintered the relationship. What happened to your friendship? Please share.  [11:19] Don't waste time and energy talking negatively. [13:05] What do you do when you sense that something is different with your normally great assistant? We get more of the behavior that we reward. There are reinforcements that don't necessarily revolve around money. [15:53] You will see changes in a recognized and appreciated team. [16:36] We train people how to treat us as individuals. Remember the four Cs? It takes courage to change how we train people to treat us. [17:41] We talk about the book The 5 Languages of Appreciation in the Workplace: Empowering Organizations by Encouraging People. [18:45] There is a quiz to find an individual's language of appreciation. With this information a doctor can make a team member feel supported. [21:55] Your morning huddle meeting is the most valuable time during the day to coordinate your day and make sure things are running smoothly. You can also give appreciation to your staff individually and collectively as a group. [25:36] Become specific in how you recognize your team members. Be curious. Find out your team's motivator and be creative with the results.  [29:28] Even small bonuses can be appreciated. [31:06] People love to link back. Little reminders are a great way to do so. [31:43] Conflict will kill your team goals. It's the doctors responsibility to find out what's going on and be creative with problem solving.  [34:50] Your staff is where it's at because you created that atmosphere. It's your responsibility to go back and make the necessary changes.   Subscribe Today! I hope you can take away a few new ideas for your team to build fun again. Topics Mentioned:  Fun  Celebrations  Outings  Appreciation in the workplace  Key Thoughts: I really want to encourage you to take a step back and look critically at your teams and ask yourself, even though they may be great at what they do, are they loving their job? Do they want to come to work every day? Michele (3:19)  Evaluate your environment, do you feel free to laugh and to smile and greet one another and to encourage your teammates. Even if you're still meeting by Zoom or online, make sure to take a moment to connect with people before diving into the serious part. Michele (5:35)  Another thing that you might want to consider is how your team members feel individually about being appreciated. Michele (13:10)  It's never too late to begin.

SUMMARY: In this episode of the DYB Podcast called "How to Grow an All-Star Team with the 5 Languages of Appreciation," Steve and April Burnett define the 5 languages, how to recognize each one, and share how to communicate between them so every person on your team feels appreciated. Why? Because "70% of employees say they receive little or no appreciation at work" according to Gary Chapman and Paul White in their book entitled The 5 Languages of Appreciation in the Workplace: Empowering Organizations by Encouraging People. They share examples of how to know your own language of appreciation, how to know one another's language of appreciation, and tie it back to the workplace to strengthen your relationships to grow a strong team as well as utilizing this information to close more sales. Steve and April also touch on how the 5 languages of appreciation can be applied to other relationships, such as family and friends, as well. WHAT YOU'LL LEARN: -What are the 5 Languages of Appreciation -How to Know Your Own Language of Appreciation -How to Find One Another's Language of Appreciation -How the Language of Appreciation Helps to Build Strong Teams -How to Close Sales Using the Language of Appreciation QUOTES: 03:36 "One: Words of Affirmation. 'You did a great job!' is an example of Words of Affirmation.  05:57 "Two. Quality Time. Take your team out to lunch. Connect with them. Maybe grab a tool and work with them for a little bit. Maybe ask them to ride along with you on a sales call. (That's) Quality Time." 15:37 "Three. Acts of Service. Providing assistance, ask, "What can I do to help?" Make sure that they win by setting them up to succeed. So ask (your team), how can you serve them? How can you help them?" 18:43 "Four. Gifts. Tangible gifts. I believe this is Ron's. Ron Ramsden. He is awesome. So we have that retreat a couple of years ago. He bought all the coaches a branded DYB hat. He is so thoughtful like that." 26:56 "Five. So here's the last one and it's kind of interesting. Physical Touch. Okay, so this one, we have to have a huge caveat here because there's appropriate workplace touch and there's inappropriate and you do not want to cross the boundaries here. Handshakes, fist-bumps, and high fives are all great and appropriate forms of Physical Touch." HIGHLIGHTS: 01:49 Lack of appreciation in the workplace 03:37 Language of appreciation 1: Words of affirmation 05:57 Language of appreciation 2: Quality time 10:24 Quality time in the workplace 15:32 Language of appreciation 3: Acts of service 18:43 Language of appreciation 4: Gifts 21:23 Gifts in the workplace and marriage 26:56 Language of appreciation 5: Physical touch LINKS & RESOURCES MENTIONED IN THIS EPISODE: The 5 Languages of Appreciation in the Workplace: Empowering Organizations by Encouraging People by Gary Chapman and Paul White   ADDITIONAL FREE RESOURCES: DYB System PDF Download Video Testimonial Checklist Schedule Your Free Strategy Call With Steve Burnett   (Press and hold to visit the page) Show Page Notes

Lisa Giancarli is the Executive Director and Owner of Over the Rainbow Child Development Center, located in Bordentown, New Jersey. Lisa followed her passion to own her own business and fell in love with childcare after acquiring the center in 2011. She talks about the improvements she and her husband made when starting Over the Rainbow from the bottom up, the specific things she has done to create a culture in line with the overall company vision, and the benefits she received when really looking at her metrics and taking action steps based upon them.   Key Takeaways: [3:13] Lisa’s husband is a REALTOR®, and they bought the Over the Rainbow building as an investment in 2011. Her plan was to run it until they got a deal but she ended up taking it on and 8 years later, the rest is history. [6:10] Lisa proves that it is possible to learn as you go. She became a student of the childcare business and they went from a barebones school to one that utilizes technology and state-of-the-art electronic reporting and data collecting. [9:36] Lisa and her husband Joe not only work great together but they are also high school sweethearts who have been married 28 years. [9:54] While you are working hard and building your business, self-care is not only important but it’s also essential. [13:34] The Director position is a huge component of success in the school. Lisa realized firsthand how important it is to listen to the team and foster an environment where people can speak up. [17:38] When one toxic person leaves, sometimes more follow. [20:45] In an age of electronic communication and quick responses, a well thought out handwritten note goes a long way to create a personal touch and show that you care. [21:28] Lisa tracks enrollment weekly and reviews her metrics to create a realistic view of where her business is. This wasn’t always the case but she found much more control and power once they started consistently looking at metrics. [28:45] Lisa’s top pillars to success in the field: Never stop learning about the business and immersing yourself in the industry. A happy family and happy staff build the business and foster high retention. Be open to the outside-of-the-box ideas from all people on your team. Don’t resist growth and change or advice from others who have done it before you.  [36:287] A rockstar is one who learns what they need to do and figures out how to do it. They understand, plan, and execute.   Mentioned in This Episode: Kris Murray The Child Care Success Company Child Care Success Academy Child Care Success Summit Over the Rainbow Ann Rhoades ChildCare CRM The 5 Languages of Appreciation in the Workplace: Empowering Organizations by Encouraging People, by Gary Chapman and Paul White Child Care Millionaire: Secrets to Building a Profitable 7 or 8 Figure Child Care Business, by Brian Duprey StrengthsFinder ProCare KidReports

I had the chance this week to talk with Denise King, Vice-President for Academic Affairs at Cleveland State Community College. She talks about the need these days to supplement the perspective of an educator with analytical and data tools that help explain the environment we’re working in, and come up with solutions to the challenges we’re dealing with. This was our first attempt at a remote interview, where we weren't both sitting in the same room, and I appreciate Denise's great attitude as we tried something new with technology!
