Four decades ago, Cory Satterfield arrived on campus as a heralded right-handed pitcher from South Jersey. Recruited by Cal Koonce – a member of the 1969 Amazin' Mets – and later coached by 1982 Cy Young runner-up Mike Caldwell – Cory enjoyed a career capped by leading the Camels to their first Big South baseball title in 1988 and earning all-conference and all-tournament honors along the way. Thirty-seven years since he graduated, his name is still etched in the Campbell record books. He is still ranked among the program's top five all time leaders in wins, starts, complete games, innings pitched and strikeouts. Drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals in 1988, Cory played three seasons in the minors, earning Midwest League All-Star honors in 1989. After his playing career ended Cory began a teaching career in Harnett County and later Richmond County. He was twice honored as principal of the year and later served as assistant superintendent and interim superintendent of Scotland County schools. After retiring from administrative duties, he was elected to the Richmond County Board of Education in 2022 and continues to serve that organization. In addition to playing golf whenever he can, Cory is also a member of the Athletic Director's advisory board at his alma mater. In the next installment of Tales from the Creek, Cory Satterfield talks with Stan Cole about his journey to Campbell, being coached by two former major league pitchers, his deep connections with his teammates and to the Buies Creek community, and much more.

Dale Steele literally built the Campbell Football program from the ground up.  He arrived in Buies Creek in 2006 and spent the next two years putting together facilities, a staff and roster in time for the program to relaunch in 2008 after a 58-year hiatus.   Coach Steele brought a quarter century of college football coaching experience to Campbell and turned the program into a winner in just four short years.   The son of a high school coach and graduate of the University of South Carolina, where he played on the offensive and defensive lines, Dale began a coaching career that lasted more than 45 years when he took a graduate assistant position at Ball State in 1977.   Over the years, his travels took him to Wisconsin, Tulane, Wichita State, Kansas State, East Carolina, Baylor, East Tennessee and Elon before he and his family moved to Harnett County in 2006.  Among the many accomplishments of his career, include five bowl trips and back-to-back FCS national titles while he was on the staff at James Madison.   Now retired, he has served as an advisor to current Campbell head coach Braxton Harris and is involved with the Myrtle Beach Bowl, while he and his wife Pam spend as much time as possible with their grand kids.   Earlier this year, Coach Steele was inducted into the Campbell Athletics Hall of Fame.   In the next installment of Tales from the Creek, Campbell Hall of Fame member Dale Steele talks with Stan Cole about his paths to Campbell, starting a football program from scratch, and more.

Sixty years ago, when basketball fans jammed old Carter Gym for the Harnett County high school championship, little did anyone know that those in attendance would be witnesses to history.   That night – February 29, 1964 – Boone Trail and Angier played a game that lasted 13 overtimes before Boone Trail won 56-54.  No basketball game on the high school, college or professional level has lasted as long.   Frank Stewart was a senior guard for the Boone Trail Pioneers and led all scorers that night with 29 points.  He graduated and enrolled at Campbell in the fall of 1964, where he played under legendary coach Fred McCall.   Along the way, Frank played an important role on Campbell teams that later became an NAIA powerhouse.  He graduated, moved into the teaching and coaching profession, raised three kids, but stayed in touch with his teammates and opponents from the 13-overtime game.   In the next installment of Tales from the Creek, Stan Cole talks with Frank Stewart about growing up in Harnett County, the 13-overtime game, his path to Campbell and his six-decade journey since Leap Day 1964.

Parler, which bills itself as “the world’s pioneering uncancelable free speech platform,” announced the purchase agreement in principle in a press release on Oct. 17, the same day that West joined the service. “In a world where conservative opinions are considered to be controversial we have to make sure we have the right to freely express ourselves,” West, who has legally changed his name to Ye, said in a statement. Parler has not disclosed how much West will pay for the platform nor whether the purchase will yield any policy changes, with the deal expected to close by year’s end. “The proposed acquisition will assure Parler a future role in creating an uncancelable ecosystem where all voices are welcome,” Parler said in a statement. George Farmer, the CEO of Parlement Technologies, the parent company of Parler, welcomed West’s involvement in the platform. “This deal will change the world, and change the way the world thinks about free speech,” Farmer said in a statement. The development comes after West was recently locked out of his Instagram and Twitter accounts after making posts alleged to be anti-Semitic. https://thepostmillennial.com/defund-the-police-councilwoman-begs-seattle-police-for-protection-after-poop-thrown-at-her-house?utm_campaign=64487 'Defund the police' councilwoman begs Seattle Police for protection after 'poop' thrown at her house Kshama Sawant, the Seattle City Council member who led the charge to defund the police department is now requesting police to protect her home in response to repeated scatological vandalism. Sources told The Post Millennial that over the past month someone has been throwing human feces at the Marxist councilmember’s home. According to the source, the Seattle Police Department responded and took a report, and the councilmember is now requesting a “permanent patrol presence monitoring her place from 5 pm -10 pm every day.” This is not the first time the radical councilmember has asked for police protection. In December 2020 following the riots that rocked the city in the wake of the death of George Floyd, Sawant demanded police protection in response to threats. However, it was later revealed that Sawant had used the threats for publicity before contacting the Seattle police. Sawant was one of the most vocal members of the defund the police movement in Seattle which led to hundreds of officers leaving the force. Following the defunding movement, crime skyrocketed, and the city is on track to beat last year’s record-high number of homicides. Rapes and assaults have also spiked. 911 response times have steadily climbed and many residents reported being placed on hold. During the 2020 riots, Sawant used her key to let protestors into Seattle City Hall after hours so that the mob could occupy the building which was also closed to the public due to the pandemic. Sawant also led a group of rioters during the deadly Capitol Hill Autonomous Zone in the councilmember's district to the home of then-Mayor Jenny Durkan, the location of which was protected under confidentiality laws from her time as a US attorney. The rioters vandalized the house during the stunt. In addition to Sawant supporting the deadly occupation of six blocks of Seattle, her staff set up tents inside the zone to collect signatures for a ballot initiative. Sawant's office was not available for comment. https://www.dailywire.com/news/a-navy-veteran-showed-up-for-jury-duty-the-judge-sent-him-to-jail-for-not-wearing-a-mask A Navy Veteran Showed Up For Jury Duty. The Judge Sent Him To Jail For Not Wearing A Mask. A North Carolina Superior Court judge ordered a prospective juror to spend 24 hours in jail after he refused to wear a mask in the courtroom. Judge Charles Gilchrist is the only judge in the courthouse who enforces a mask mandate after North Carolina Democratic Governor Roy Cooper lifted a statewide mask mandate for most indoor settings over a year ago. Gilchrist found 47-year-old Gregory Hahn of Harnett County in contempt of court for his refusal to follow the judge’s mask order, WRAL News reported. “The irony of all this is the judge was talking to me without a mask,” said Hahn, a Navy veteran who reportedly served on the President’s Honor Guard at Arlington National Cemetery. “If safety was such a concern, I go to jail [with] no mask requirements with inmates.” Clerk of Superior Court Renee Whittenton said in a statement that each of the prospective jurors were told of Gilchrist’s mask rule when they checked in, and the court provided them with masks if they did not have one, but Hahn said he was not made aware of the mandate, and it was not listed on Hahn’s court summons. The courthouse does not have any signs that state masks are required. A joint order by Harnett and Lee counties from March stated that masks are optional in hallways, foyers, restrooms, meeting rooms, and similar areas, but the order allowed presiding judges to decide whether they wanted a mask mandate in the courtroom. The Navy veteran and single father said Gilchrist asked him twice if he was refusing to wear a mask, and Hahn said he was. The judge then reportedly ordered Hahn to spend 24 hours in jail, and he was handcuffed and taken away minutes later. Hahn said he asked Gilchrist if he could call his son who was at home, but the judge refused his request. https://www.theepochtimes.com/9-million-californians-to-partake-in-earthquake-drill_4799812.html?utm_source=partner&utm_campaign=BonginoReport 9 Million Californians to Partake in Earthquake Drill LOS ANGELES—Millions of people in government offices, businesses, and schools throughout Los Angeles County this week will stop everything for a minute to “drop, cover, and hold on” during a statewide earthquake preparedness drill, now in its 14th year. The Great California ShakeOut of 2022 is scheduled for 10:20 a.m. Oct. 20. “What we do to prepare now, before this big earthquake, will determine how well we can survive and recover,” according to a statement posted on ShakeOut.org. “Great ShakeOut Earthquake drills are annual opportunities to learn and practice earthquake safety with millions of people.” The ShakeOut website indicated that 9.2 million Californians are slated to participate in the drill. During last year’s event, about 7.6 million statewide registered to take part. The first drill was held in 2008. In Los Angeles County, more than 3.2 million people have registered for this week’s drill. Municipalities whose local government employees will be involved include Los Angeles, Long Beach, Pasadena, Burbank, and Santa Clarita. Multiple Los Angeles city and county agencies are also signed up, including Metrolink and Metro, the Los Angeles police and fire departments, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, Los Angeles Public Libraries, and the city departments of Recreation and Parks, Housing, Aging, and General Services. Most Los Angeles area community colleges and universities will be participating including the Los Angeles Community College District, Santa Monica College, Pasadena City College, UCLA, and USC. A majority of the county’s kindergarten through 12th-grade school districts, along with private and charter schools, will have students and staff participating. According to ShakeOut.org, the objective is to emphasize precautions during a 7.8-magnitude or larger quake along the southernmost portion of the San Andreas fault. The drill in 2019 came just over three months after the early July quakes that struck Ridgecrest. The 6.4- and 7.1-magnitude shakers caused significant damage to roads and structures in the hamlet, which lies just south of the China Lake Naval Air Weapons Station. Californians should be prepared to be self-sufficient for 72 hours following a major disaster. That includes having a first-aid kit, medications, food, and enough water for each member of a household to drink one gallon per day, according to local and state officials. Homeowners and renters should also know how to turn off the gas in their residences in case of leaks. Redballoon Not so long ago, the American dream was alive and well. He is often credited with mobilizing the grassroots movement against such activities – causing hundreds of municipalities along the Eastern seaboard to sign resolutions opposing oil and gas exploration offshore. But Randy Sturgill didn't come from a family that engaged in environmental advocacy. Rather, he grew up in the living quarters of the Harnett County jail, and not because he broke any laws. His father was the Chief Deputy Sheriff and the Sturgill family lived on the grounds of the jailhouse. It was the prisoners that taught Randy how to play cards and lectured him about the importance of living a better life than the ones they had chosen.

Lauchlin Shaw was a Harnett County-based fiddler whose family was a part of the 18th and 19th century wave of Scottish immigration to North Carolina. “His great-grandfather had come from the Isle of Jura off Scotland’s coast up through the Cape Fear River Valley,” says Wayne Martin. “That’s a really important story for North Carolina that we don’t hear about so much now.” Shaw’s grandfather and father spoke Gaelic and he went to church services in Harnett County that were given in Gaelic. The many fiddle tunes he performed were passed down through generations of fiddle players in his family. In our final installment of Director’s Cut, Wayne Martin shares a field recording of “Sally With The Run Down Shoes,” a traditional dance tune performed by Lauchlin Shaw and Chatham County banjoist A.C. Triangle Tactical Podcast - Competitive Shooting, Mostly

I'm being told that this episode had some technical issues, they are fixed now! We asked the Facebook Page for their competition shooting gripes, and we received a ton of responses. This week we went through a bunch of them and tried to explain the intent behind the rule, or the reason that others share the same gripe.  Competition in General: - Competition shooting will get you iced on the streets  USPSA - "I don't want to compete against those people with open guns!" - "Using "gamer" gear doesn't make you better with concealed carry gear!" - "The "Speed Unload" will get you killed in a gunfight!"  IDPA - Cover - Appendix Carry - No moving reloads (Did you really move and reload before the rule change? really?) - Can't drop an empty magazine with a round in the chamber The News California's 10 day waiting period to buy a firearm has been mostly repealed. A judge ruled that it didn't make any sense to make someone who already owns a bunch of guns wait 10 days to buy another one. The ruling was stayed for 180 days to give the state time to react. Harnett County, NC has re-issued operation permits to Drake Landing. Drake Landing is a wonderful sporting clays facility just south of Fuquay Varina that has been under fire from neighbors for several years. They have new restrictions as to the types of guns that can be shot there (No pistols bigger than a .45, and no rifles larger than a .22) but at the very least it appears that they will remain open. A California public school vice principal was arrested after it was found that he had a gun in his office. He was later released when they figured out that since he has a California concealed carry permit he wasn't breaking the law. An Ohio woman was accosted by two men while walking her dog on a greenway path. One of the men was armed with a baseball bat, and told the woman that she was going to come with them. The woman asked them a question while she slipped her hand into her pocket, and retrieved and readied her pistol. The thugs not wanting to shot fled the scene, and Police are still looking for them. New Shooter Testamonials Sean from NCGunBlog.com sent in a voicemail to tell us about his first IDPA match. He's hooked. If you want to send in a testimonial about your first shooting match, email firstmatch@triangletactical.net (bonus points if you send a voicemail). Plug of the Week This week we plug ourselves... sorta. Ben and I were on the 2AToday podcast a few weeks back and we had a great time wrapping up their "Battleground States" series. We talk about the states that have seen a reduction in gun rights recently, and compare and contrast some of the different things that have been happening in those states.
