On Thursday 8th May there was a service of Remembrance for workers who lost their lives and the vital role of the railway in the Second World War and an unveiling of a commemorative plaque, at the Grade II listed Signal Box at Haslemere Railway Station, organised by the Haslemere Community Station and Signal Box Trust. As Mark Simpson discovered, the box has been in operation since 1895, controlling trains between Petersfield and Farncombe, but will be decommissioned in October. There are plans for the signal box to become a Museum, with a Memorial Garden around it. Here are many of the people who attended the ceremony, which was opened by Haslemere’s Town Crier – Christian Ashdown.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

“Honoring our loved ones means respecting and appreciating them, learning about them, and perpetuating their stories and life lessons after they are gone.” New York Times Best Selling Author, Brendon Burchard. Happy 80th Birthday Mom and THANK YOU to ALL past guests. Watch this interview on YouTube here https://youtu.be/dzZZSHAyKFs On Today's MILESTONE EPISODE #300 we will cover:  ✔ 12 Life Lessons from my Mom, Hazel MacPhail for "How to Live the Good Life" Inspired by Brendon Burchard ✔ Life Lesson tips from Majid Samadi ✔ How Majid and Hazel both moved to a new country, and rose from the bottom of their field, to the top. ✔ Success and Mindset Strategies they both used. ✔ Honoring those who have influenced us to rise to greater heights in our life.     Welcome back to The Neuroscience Meets Social and Emotional Learning Podcast, where we connect the science-based evidence behind social and emotional learning (that's finally being taught in our schools today) and emotional intelligence training (used in our modern workplaces) for improved well-being, achievement, productivity and results—using what I saw as the missing link (since we weren't taught this when we were growing up in school), the application of practical neuroscience. I'm Andrea Samadi, an author, and an educator with a passion for learning and launched this podcast 5 years ago with the goal of bringing ALL the leading experts together (in one place) to uncover the most current research that would back up how the brain learns best, taking us ALL to new, and often unimaginable heights.    For today's episode, #300, I wanted to do something special, something magical for this important milestone, and I knew what it would be a few months ago. Listeners who tune into this podcast might know that I bring guests on to help ALL of us to learn and apply the most current research to help us to improve our productivity and results, but there's a lot more to it than that. I heard author and speaker Brendon Burchard explain this concept in 2014 when I first began interviewing experts, and his thoughts changed me deeply. In his YouTube video Interview Those You Love, Before They Are Gone[i] he asks “how do you honor people who are important to you?” You know, the people who have taught you something that changed you in a positive way? Some people send gifts to these people, but not Brendon. He made a pact to do something unique to honor these change-makers and when I heard what he did, I thought “I want to do exactly the same thing as Brendon Burchard.” After all, he is the author of the book High Performance Habits: How Extraordinary People Became That Way[ii]. He suggested that a special way to honor someone who has made a difference in your life is to interview them, and ask for their words of wisdom, that will be recorded for you, and others to hear, forever. That's exactly what I have done with this podcast, starting with my husband, Majid Samadi, who influences me daily, and then if you look through the guests I've asked to come on the podcast, you will now know they were all intentional for me to honor the difference they made with my work, character, the direction and understanding in this thing we call life, and how to live “the good life.” Brendon suggests that instead of sending them a gift, the best way to honor these people in your life is to first of all tell them directly the difference they've made for you, how specifically they have helped you, and then carry their voice forward, in yours, with an interview. I know that each person I've interviewed has a clear picture of how they helped me specifically, and now their message helps others, all around the world. I've got to say that sometimes the messages you'll receive from other to improve yourself aren't easy to hear, but if they are delivered with love, with your growth in mind, listening to this feedback can make a profound difference in your life. I'll never forget the interview I did with best-selling author John Assaraf, from EP #39[iii] (that was actually recorded in 2015) because it was John who gave me feedback on the program I created, that was going into schools, (not in this interview) but he told me directly, face to face, that I had to redo everything, and he used the exact words that I clearly have never forgotten, “your baby (which was my membership site at the time) is ugly” and he said, you can't charge people money for this. I remember thinking “well, shoot, if I had millions of dollars in my bank like you I wouldn't have had to code the whole website on my own” but I put my defensive mind aside, and redid the site, before selling it to anyone. And then when my programs went into the schools, I had more feedback, and an uncomfortable meeting with educator Jeff Kleck[iv], who told me all the parts of my work that he recommended I change, replacing the old, with the most current brain research (that at the time, I knew nothing about). I didn't like hearing this feedback at all, and it was a lot of hard work to fix both the membership site with John's feedback and write a whole new book, with Jeff Klecks's, but I'm so grateful for everyone who gave me advice to improve personally and professionally. I'm sure you can think of those who have done this for you. Imagine if we all reached out to those who impacted us this way, let them know how they helped us, and then glean some wisdom from them to help others? Imagine a world like this? That's what I've done since 2019 with this podcast. I've been very intentional about WHO I've asked as a guest, and today's guest is someone very special in my life, who is responsible for the person I am today, literally. Today's guest is my Mom, Hazel MacPhail. My Mom will join my husband, Majid Samadi and I for a conversation that I hope will bring some insight to you, wherever you tune in around the world. My Mom was born August 10th 1943 in Haslemere,  Surrey, England and named Hazel Frances Bernhardt.  She married my Dad, Francis (Frank) Greenshields MacPhail in the sixties and emigrated to Canada with him and my two sisters Karen, and Christine in 1973. She met my Dad in The Carioca Club, that she said was a coffee bar hang out for young people on the seafront at Worthing Sussex, her Mom's home town and where she spent to first 10 years of her life before moving to Goring in Sussex, a few miles away. I was 2 when my parents emigrated to Toronto, Canada, where I grew up, before moving to the United States in early 2001. My Mom will answer the questions I've picked out for her from a unique perspective of someone who had to start her life over from scratch, in a new country, and Majid will bring his experience of moving to the United States from Iran when he was 10. I'm hoping you will find their insight and ideas from my Mom on “How to Live The Good Life” to be empowering, inspiring and useful, as they will both share their legacy stories from the point of view of someone who had to build something out of nothing. Let's meet my Mom, Hazel MacPhail and welcome Majid Samadi back for his 4th time on the podcast and I'm going to ask them some of the questions that New York Times Best-Selling Author, Brendon Burchard suggests for Interviewing Someone You Love. INTERVIEW SOMEONE YOU LOVE ABOUT LIFE Some Questions by Brendon Burchard Welcome Hazel and Majid! Thank you for coming on the podcast today. Mom, it's been a long time since I called you Hazel…maybe over 20 years ago when I was your swimming teacher.  Welcome and thanks for being here, and welcome back Majid, for your 4th time on the podcast. INTRO: Mom, you would know by now that I do these podcasts, and interview people all over the world to glean their wisdom and advice. Today, I wanted to ask you some questions so you can share your words of wisdom with our audience that spans over 190 countries, around the world. Can we start to orient our listeners with both of your backgrounds? Q1: Hazel: What comes to mind when you think about growing up in [England-The Quadrant]?   Majid: What comes to mind when you think about growing up in Iran?    Q2: Hazel and Majid: What made you decide to move to a new country? Majid: What was it like coming to the US without knowing how to speak the language?   Q3: Hazel and Majid: How did you choose your career? What did you like the most/least about it?   Q4: Hazel and Majid: What made you successful at work?   Q5: Hazel and Majid: What helped you through difficult times?   Q6: Hazel and Majid: What events most shaped your life?   Q7: Hazel and Majid: What words best describe who you tried to be in life and how you want to be remembered?   Q8: Hazel and Majid: What have you learned about other people in life?   Q9: Hazel and Majid: What are you most proud of in life?   Q10: Hazel and Majid: Final thoughts?   Mom, and Majid, I want to thank you both for coming on the podcast today, and helping me to share your message with our listeners, and leave a part of your legacy with mine. I can't tell you enough how grateful I am to have had this opportunity today. I hope your lessons help others, and specifically, I do hope that others follow Brendon Burchard's lead, and interview those who have impacted them in their lifetime. This has been an incredible experience that I'll never forget. Thank you. FINAL THOGHTS: All episodes are special and important to me, but this one, came full circle from where we began in June 2019. Some things aren't easy to see looking forward, but so clear when you connect the dots, looking backwards, like Steve Jobs is famous for saying. When I asked my Mom to come on the podcast and record an episode with my husband, I had no idea that we would record the weekend before my Mom's 80th Birthday on August 10th, so I knew I had to release this episode on her 80th Birthday, as a thank you for all that she did for me that took me to where I am today. It was my Mom, Hazel, who sat with me every morning, planning the best way for me to move to the United States, and what I would do when I arrived. She didn't foresee September 11th happening, or any of the hardships, but she told me many times that it would be hard work, but I would be very happy. I believed her, because over the years I learned to trust her instinct and magical intuition. She would spend hours every night studying for these work tests, in the insurance industry (she said they were the Lomas Tests) and after she had passed all of these tests, I noticed she was still studying at night. I wondered what she was studying, and knew in my heart it was important work. My Mom worked hard at her craft, but she worked equally as hard at developing the faculties of her mind. If you ask me, this is what gave her an edge over others in her life, helped her through difficult times raising us kids, and especially helped her when she had to overcome Uterine Cancer. I noticed the hard work she put into this study, and watching her motivated me to do the same. It's sort of contagious when you see someone else working hard, and yielding the results from this work, and this what I'm doing when I am driven to keep learning, and sharing with you here on the podcast. I want to carry my Mom's legacy forward, in my work. To close out this episode, I'll review the TOP 12 Life Lessons I picked out from her words today, and hope it helps you in some way. LESSON 1: Be Clear About the Part of Your Life That Shapes You the Most: She remembered hers, and I know mine. It's not the easy times that I know changed me, it those difficult challenging times. So if you are IN difficult, and challenging times now, know they will end, and you will be a better person because of them. LESSON 2: Say “YES” to every job to move your career forward. I talk about this in my most recent book, Level Up[v], in the chapter on Persistence, with the words of the late Art Linkletter, who had no business experience, but created a highly popular TV show back in the 1950s and 1960s called Kids Say the Darndest Things.  When I heard him speak years ago, his whole message was about persistence, saying he had to interview 27,000 children to get the ones that were really good that went on television. He also mentioned that his biggest regret in life was saying no to a business opportunity with his good friend Walt Disney, who took him to these orange groves, and tried to paint the picture of Disneyland for him, but he couldn't see his friends vision. Say “yes” to everything, just like my Mom said, so you don't miss out on a partnership like Disneyland like Art did. LESSON 3: Keep Learning New Skills. This is what I watched my Mom doing at night after long days at the office, and what motivates me to keep learning. What is it that keeps YOU coming back and learning from podcasts, or listening to us today? LESSON 4: Have a sense of humor. This one, I don't have any tips for, as this is not my strength. Majid is better at this one than me, as I'm usually the more serious one. LESSON 5: Learn how to solve difficult problems and know where to go when you get stuck with something. This is one of the reasons why I do this podcast, to share tools and resources we can all use to help move us forward. LESSON 6: Learn to be resourceful. This is something I remember John Assaraf saying in our interview together (EP #39)[vi] that made a difference in his early life. He talked about ways he would think creatively when he didn't have enough money to do things, and this creativity spilled over into his life today, helping him to see ways forward, around roadblocks. LESSON 7: ALWAYS LEARN FROM OTHERS. If you keep reading books, listening to ideas, you can learn to do some outstanding things, all from others. LESSON 8: There's more good people in the world than bad. See the good in people. We cover this on EP#214[vii] with Marie Gervais and her book “The Spirit of Work.” LESSON 9: Learn to read people. My Mom taught me Theory of Mind that we covered on EP 46[viii] when I told her I needed help with this skill. We took this a whole bunch of levels deeper with EP#163[ix] with Dan Hill, the faces guy, on his episode that taught us “How to Read the Emotions in Others in Schools, Sports and the Workplace.” This skill, when practiced, will give you information quickly about another person, as our eyes really are the mirrors to our soul. LESSON 10: Thank people who have moved your forward somehow. That was the whole point of this episode that I mention in the backstory. Find those who have helped YOU along the way, and let them know. LESSON 11: Learn from our challenging experiences.  This one doesn't need any explanation. LESSON 12: Finally, the last words of wisdom from my Mom, have no regrets in life. And with that, I'll close out our 300th episode, dedicated to Mom, Hazel on her 80th Birthday. Happy Birthday Mom. I love you, and am so grateful to have had this opportunity to record your words of wisdom, for others around the world to hear. I also want to honor the words of wisdom from ALL our past guests today, as we reach this important milestone, and I'll see you next week! Heritage railway enthusiasts enjoyed a rare treat today (17th May) as a heritage steam locomotive chuffed through the Petersphere. The Hampshire Hills Lunchtime Tour - hauled by ex-LNER B1 class 61306 Mayflower - set off from West Brompton in south west London this morning before taking part in an historic photo shoot next to Brooklands Museum, Weybridge, recreating Frederick Gordon Crosby's famous painting of the 350HP Sunbeam over taking a steam-hauled express train. It marked exactly a hundred years since the world land speed record was broken there. Continuing down to Woking, Winchester and Fareham, it greeted us in Petersfield at around 12:50pm. Those dining onboard were served a three-course meal. After passing Liss and Liphook, it arrived into Platform 3 at Haslemere where a water tanker awaited. In this special programme, Harrison RB, Jo Gray and James 'the Captain' Birdseye meet the crew including the engine's driver and fireman and Head of Passenger Services at tour operator Steam Dreams, which is based in Guildford. A slightly shorter episode this week, although not by much. Whilst we have plenty of subjects in the pipeline to talk about we're beginning run out of ideas. It's not that we've said everything there is to say about Wiltshire but that finding the time to get out and explore is increasingly difficult. So we're contemplating recording the podcasts on a monthly basis rather than every two weeks, just to give us the time to visit more interesting locations. We'd really appreciate ideas about new locations from followers of the podcast. In the two weeks since the last podcast Glyn has again been pretty much tied to his desk, although he did manage to do a muddy eight mile walk to Bincknoll Castle and the Broad Town White Horse near Wroughton. It sounded like the mud tempered his enthusiasm!  Paul has done a few walks, albeit one was in Sussex on the border of the Surrey Hills. He walked to the top of the highest point in Sussex, which is not on the South Downs as he'd always thought, but on Black Down near to Haslemere. The hill was very reminiscent of the New Forest. Inspired by Hidden Wiltshire contributor Elaine Perkins, Paul re-visited Newton Tony to look at its past role as a transport hub. It once had an important railway but long before that a Roman road passed nearby. There is a blog about the walk on the Hidden Wiltshire website and it's linked on the Facebook pages but we will record a podcast about it sometime in the future. Elaine has also written her first Blog for the website. You'll find a link below. Another walk Paul did was in Bentley Wood, again with useful tips from Elaine Perkins. This was Paul's first visit and he put together a route that also included Hound Wood and Blackmoor Copse. Whilst most of the route was in woodland the varied nature of the woods and copses was very noticeable. Probably not one for a podcast but a short blog and photos may follow soon. Meanwhile, Glyn and Paul met with Tim Daw and recorded an interview with him at the modern day long barrow he built at All Cannings, something he has called a Novolithic long barrow. The perfect name we thought. We'll be putting out a podcast with this fascinating interview soon. Glyn has also received another hand written letter together with a book written by the grandfather of one of his Twitter followers Jonathan Steadman. The book, by A R Steadman (who was the head teacher of Marlborough Grammar School), is about the countryside around Marlborough from prehistoric times through to the 1960s. It would make an interesting comparison with the book The Land of Lettice Sweetapple which is about the history of the same area. And finally Hidden Wiltshire has once again featured in another publication. Glyn wrote an article about Blind Houses for the March edition of the Wiltshire Buildings Record Newsletter. If you can get hold of a copy there are many hidden Wiltshire gems in there. The main feature this week is Wiltshire's Chalk Badges. The county's military links are well known and long lasting. As far as we have been able to identify there are four locations where regimental badges can be found carved into chalk hillsides, albeit one is not strictly a regimental badge.  Fovant is the most famous location where eight or nine badges can still be seen carved into the hillside next to the A30. Glyn wrote a blog about it on 18 October 2018 (see link below). Mostly carved by soldiers during the Fist World War (some are later) there would initially have been around 20 badges. Many are now overgrown. Just a little further along the valley there are two more badges at Sutton Mandeville. The final badge is called the Lamb Down Badge and can be seen by the A36 at Codford. This solitary badge was carved by soldiers of the 13th Training Battalion of the Australian Imperial Forces in 1917 as a form of punishment! Finally we have the famous giant Kiwi carved in 1919 by New Zealand soldiers. At 420 feet (130m) high it's enormous and its construction was designed to distract riotous soldiers awaiting transit home to New Zealand. Then on to the wrap up: Steve Dixon's piece leading into our main subject today is called “From the Edge of Grey to Green” because that's what happens to the white/light grey of the chalk if it's not regularly cleaned! As ever the piece in the introduction and at the end of the podcast is entitled “The Holloway”. Don't forget to check out the Hidden Wiltshire online shop on the website if you'd like to help us keep the lights on. Both Hidden Wiltshire books can be purchased there. The second book is also available at Devizes Bookshop, Wiltshire Museum in Devizes and now Wiltshire's libraries. And don't forget to subscribe to the Hidden Wiltshire Newsletter from the website. It was full steam ahead for railway enthusiasts across the Petersphere on Saturday (6th November) as Merchant Navy Class No.35028 "Clan Line" chuffed through the South Downs. “The Hampshire Pullman” was virtually on-time for the entirety of its six hour long trip from London Victoria and down the Portsmouth Direct Line before looping back round towards the capital via Eastleigh and Basingstoke. The train made its first stop at Haslemere to allow the locomotive to take on water. It was there that Shine Radio's Noni Needs and Harrison RB were invited for a tour of the iconic British Pullman carriages used on the London-Folkestone leg of the Venice Simplon Orient Express. Noni and Harrison also spoke to volunteers from the Merchant Navy Locomotive Preservation Society - Clan Line's owners - who are supported entirely through donations. This particular tour was organised by UK Railtours. But the excitement wasn't all up the A3 in Haslemere - Stephen Martin was at Kingsfernsden Lane level crossing where families gathered to catch a glimpse of the train as it headed for Petersfield station. Stephen spoke to Gill who lives close to the railway line. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Trainspotters are gearing up to witness the first steam-hauled railtour along the main line through Petersfield for more than two years on Saturday (6th November). “The Hampshire Pullman” – hauled by Merchant Navy Class No.35028 “Clan Line” – is formed of the iconic British Pullman carriages used on the London-Folkestone leg of the Venice Simplon Orient Express, and will also pass through Liss and the Petersphere's spectacle of level crossings on its journey from, and to, London Victoria. The tour was originally scheduled via Andover and Southampton but has been diverted through the South Downs as the recovery operation continues at the scene of Sunday's train crash near Salisbury. After a water stop at Haslemere, 13:12-13:42, it is expected to pass Liphook at 13:47, Liss at 13:53, Petersfield at 13:57 and Rowlands Castle at 14:08. I have used this several times for moving Linux to new drives. It does support Windows 10 too. The only downside is it has so many different options. He lives in Haslemere, Surrey, but he is limited to just variable BT Internet with a max speed of 32Mbps down and 2-3Mbps up. He looked at 5G but not available in his area yet. Starlink costs him approx £90 per month. It delivers speeds consistently in the 80Mbps - 170Mbps range - and this is improving as Starlink adds more satellites. He does get dropouts of 3-6 seconds at times, now and then. The Starlink dish is mounted on his chimney and is slightly bigger than a Sky dish. It is motorised for tracking the satellites and heated to clear snow and ice. He's not had any overheating issues, but could see that might happen on a hot 30C+ day in direct sunlight. *B* rownie Addiction was founded in 2020 by entrepreneurial couple Michelle Cox and Kevin Southgate. Michelle Cox, also Head of product development, has an impressive background as a Cordon Bleu trained chef who has spent more than ten years perfecting her brownie recipe before co-founding Brownie Addiction. Kevin Southgate, with his customer-centric obsession, is responsible for the strategic vision of Brownie Addiction. Starting out during Covid-19, providing a pick me up treat to put a smile on the faces of local residents, Michelle's Brownies quickly became a local hit in the Hampshire area. Fast forward a few months, and with the objective to take that smile UK wide, Brownie Addiction was formed. All our full-size brownies were perfectly optimized to fit through your letterbox without jeopardizing size, quality, or price for our customers. We are now well established in our unit in Fernhurst Business Park, near Haslemere, Surrey, with the capacity to produce up to 1,500 brownies per day. We supply our delicious luxurious brownies, and blondies made with the finest Belgian chocolate not only to consumers UK wide but our local business partners too. Whether you are looking to sell our Brownies in your cafe, send gifts to all your amazing staff for going over and above or favors at your dream wedding.

Testing & Tracing the coronavirus, and the traces our movements leave behind

BBC Inside Science

Inside Science this week is all about our information - the stuff we volunteer and the traces our everyday movements leave behind. With the launch of NHS Test and Trace across England, if you start to feel unwell with suspected Covid-19 and call a new NHS hotline 119, you’ll be tested for the virus. Your close contacts will be traced and, if you test positive, you'll be asked to self-isolate for 7 days, and your contacts asked to quarantine for 14 days. The route to those close contacts is currently through manual tracing - you have to give the details of everyone with whom you’ve been in close contact. But in the coming weeks, the plan is to integrate the NHSX app, currently being trialled on the Isle of Wight. This will pick up close contacts with people you don't know, on public transport, for example, provided they also have the app. It’s a new way to fight a pandemic, but the pioneers here are the residents of the English town of Haslemere in Surrey who, back in 2017, were tackling a terrifyingly contagious and, thankfully, hypothetical virus spread by ‘patient zero’ Hannah Fry. Created for the BBC4 documentary: Contagion, it was an experiment to see how we could fight the next pandemic. The BBC built an app, which residents downloaded and, crucially, it created a data-set. Evolutionary Biologist Dr Lewis Spurgin, from University of East Anglia, has used this data-set to explore the impact that different control strategies could have on the spread of the virus that causes Covid-19. In a different case of tracking and tracing, involving some policing by members of the public and journalists, Dominic Cummings’ comings and goings have consumed the nation this week. Just how much are our everyday movements being clocked, monitored and recorded? What traces do our phones, cars and even our faces leave behind? And who gets to see this information? Marnie talks to researcher and broadcaster Stephanie Hare, author of the forthcoming book Technology Ethics. Presenter: Marnie Chesterton Producers: Beth Eastwood & Fiona Roberts

AIOTM Video Series #3: Kniforkoon. We're a cast member down and the new young blood on the team seems to be plotting a permanent takeover. It reminds me of something, but surely there can't be a Shakespeare parody in the middle of all this rubbish about poo and robot sex? Richard is furious about a slight he has received from a young house guest and bamboozled by the specificity of the educational videos that his daughter has to sit through (introducing the big future star of TV, film or whatever they have in the future, Phoebe Herring). He is also planning to reinvent the way we eat food and his toaster robot obsession is getting out of hand (and into the slot of a toaster). Also what happens when you try to wee in the wrong place and finally Emma Kennedy gets what's coming to her. This show is best enjoyed whilst sitting in Haslemere and eating some Dylan's Ice Cream: http://www.dylansicecream.co.uk/ To view a longer version of this and the other five episodes (all six are already up), plus behind the scenes interviews, bloopers and other material why not buy a series pass at www.gofasterstripe.com/aiotm (other AIOTM merchandise also available at that address).

Clare Balding walks in the footsteps of Jane Austen as she takes a path regularly taken by Jane, from her home in Chawton, now a museum, to Farringdon, to visit her friends. Clare is joined by husband and wife, Martyn and Sue Dell. Both work as volunteers at the museum, fulfilling a long held ambition of Sue's. She fell in love with Austen as a teenager upon first reading Pride and Prejudice and has fancied herself as Elizabeth Bennet ever since. Sue promised herself she would work at the museum once she retired from teaching. Martyn is a trustee and steward and talks about the importance of the house to visitors from all over the world, especially this year which marks the 200 th anniversary of Austen's death. They are also joined by the Museum Administrator, Gill Stanton. The walk can be found on OS Explorer 133 Haslemere and Petersfield. Starting at the house in Chawton and walking to Farringdon, across the fields as Jane would have done and then back along the old disused railway, which she would have not. Producer Lucy Lunt.
