Cara Harbstreet and Whitney Trotter joined this episode LIVE in Denver, CO at the first in-person WIND event since 2020. This was made possible by partnering with Gaudiani Clinic, Eating Disorders Foundation, and SuperBill. We start this conversation off with some fun topics including pet peeves while traveling, favorite emojis, and superpowers. Cara and Whitney then share how the shift into virtual work has affected their businesses and what major initiative they would want to spearhead within the weight-inclusive healthcare and/or cultural space. This episode is sponsored by Way Health. Way is a mindful eating app that helps you find peace in your relationship with food and your body. Grounded in mindfulness and cognitive behavioral therapy, they focus on what makes the body feel good and what makes you feel good about your body as an avenue to long-term eating behavior change. Find Way on the Apple Store and other places where apps are sold! Cara and Whitney answer two audience questions: How are you taking care of yourself and focusing on client care while trying to balance what's happening in the spaces of underrepresented identities? How are you balancing micro or macro aggressions against yourself, your colleagues, and your clients from other professionals while also dealing with the anger, exhaustion and frustration that comes up for you? I'll lead with the lead: this is the final season of RD Real Talk podcast...I'm pretty sure! (Said like a true Enneagram 7.) This episode features a sneak peak at the WIND Summer Series. Check it out here: Weightinclusivenutrition.teachable.com! There are (at least) ten SOLID episodes of this show left, and I'm so excited (and feeling lucky) to be recording them over the next two months. But after that, we take a break! Indefinitely. So, don't go anywhere too soon. In this episode, I share some of the business insights and numbers from the show over the past 5 years! I share why I've loved doing this podcast, and why I'm pausing it for now, and maybe for always. And I'm sharing a little reminder for whoever needs it: success doesn't have to mean a million downloads, or a show that produces prolificly for infinity. If you want to start your own anti-diet, weight-inclusive show, I'm here for it! Do it. Whitney Trotter RN RD is here to talk about the ways we must start revolutionizing eating disorder care, to do no harm when caring for marginalized identities. Whitney is both a registered nurse and registered dietitian, an anti-diet practitioner, and an advocate for social justice reform in eating disorder treatment. We talk about how her work has evolved, how traditional and standard ED treatment norms fall short, how we can foster confidence with flexible eating, and how cultural cuisine shouldn’t be a special ‘challenge’ meal. Amy Hanneke RD, aka @SatisfyNutrition IG, has experienced some major career moves since we last talked. On her first episode of RD Real Talk (67: IE Stories in Clinical Nutrition), she was working in clinical nutrition and living in rural southern Idaho. She went on to leave her clinical post, set up a booming private practice in Denver, CO, and eventually decided to close up shop and move, again. If you’re interested in setting up your own weight-inclusive, non-diet private practice, check out Pursuing Private Practice-Intuitive Eating, a robust course led by Jennifer McGurk. I (Heather) used it in setting up my own practice! This is an affiliate link. We don’t hear much about the whole private practice, especially the nitty gritty of getting things set up, but more so the tough decision to leave the business world, and become an employee again. All of these choices are deeply personal, and Amy gets real about why this was right choice for her. She also takes us into the world of Satisfy Nutrition, sharing some behind-the-scenes info about her social media world. Another essential resource to both mine and Amy’s private practice: SimplePractice. SimplePractice is an Electronic Health Record for dietitians that provides flexible formatting for show notes, practice documents (templates for Release of Information, Policies, and billing), scheduling, and secure video conferencing! [Replay!] Jessica Jones, dietitian and co-host of Food Heaven podcast, joins me to chat about her career, and then, Whole30. January seems like the most popular time for people to "try" the Whole30, so we're here to try and help you avoid that path. I put out a call to social media, asking people why they've done the Whole30, and what they liked about it, to try and integrate various perspectives. Tune into our conversation to learn why Whole30 isn't the best way to adopt new habits like meal planning, trying new recipes, and eating to feel better. There are many other ways to do all of the above, without extreme food restrictions or rigid food rules. We address: meal planning, recipes, digestive issues, sugar addiction (or lack thereof), PCOS, and the hidden threat of deprivation. Kimmie Singh MS RD2Be joins us to talk about all things weight-inclusive care for PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome). Kimmie describes how her "informal" nutrition education started young, while she was studying physics in college, when she was diagnosed with PCOS at age 19. Given little medical guidance or nutrition resources, Kimmie took it up on herself to learn how to manage her symptoms. Much of what we see in the PCOS literature focuses on weight-normative care and promotes weight loss or "weight management". This episode provides information on how and why this approach will likely fail, and how to effectively manage PCOS without a focus on weight. Almost everything is impermanent, actually. Including this podcast! But we're here for now, and it's the 100th episode of RD Real Talk! Heather and Robyn are back to co-host this episode of RD Real Talk, talking about stress, and Allostatic Load (or overload). We're both in a certain phase of life where "overwhelm" comes easily, and we have to consistently reassess how much our buckets can hold. Allostatic Load: "Stressed or stressed out: What is the difference?" Robyn wrote a great blog post about Allostatic load, so if you want to dive in further, read on. Things we discuss: how running can be part of joyful movement and a balanced relationship with health exercise why I (Heather) didn't go after that half-marathon PR real life, imperfect human moments how to tell when your bucket might be WAY TOO full Questions or feedback, or just a story about allostatic load in your life? Haley Goodrich, INSPIRD private practice dietitian and co-leader of the #INSPIRDtoSEEK Facebook group for nutrition entrepreneurs, joins me on this episode to talk about holding space for our clients. But first, we dive into the evolution of her business, and her own process of embracing a non-diet approach and learning how to do some uncomfortable work. This episode touches on how we can do less harm and more good by addressing our egos, our expectations, and our learned behaviors that suggest we have to have "The Fix" and provide tangible takeaways every time—and changing that approach. Instead, we are learning to be present with another person and their story, without always having (or needing) a solution. We touch on thin and body privilege, weight stigma, expanding your business, and starting to see how weight inclusive practices apply beyond nutrition therapy and into the world around us. How can we practice more weight-inclusivity in healthcare? In dietetics? Why does this approach feel threatening, and divisive? What can we do about the lack of diversity in dietetics? Weight Inclusive Nutrition and Dietetics (WIND) Workshop recording: These aren’t easy questions to answer, or even talk about. But it’s necessary that we look at these issues and get ready to take them on. It’s imperative that we stop promoting and engaging weight-based discrimination. Emily Travis, MPH RD, joins me to talk about all things dating, socializing, and maintaining your intuitive eating preferences. Emily regales us with stories from her dating experiences, from inappropriate comments to a waiter offering some #DietCulture tips. We're not here for that, y'all. Emily offers more information about this topic on her site: WeAll-Eat.com. We cover everything from friendships to romantic relationships, but I do want to acknowledge that this is mostly a conversation about "traditional" dating, in hetero-normative relationships. So, I want to welcome YOUR stories, too. Have a different perspective to add to the mix? Reach out anytime: RDRealTalk@Gmail.com Before we dive into all things dating, I share a little real-talk-moment about an unpleasant run-in with diet culture on social media. Kelsey Miller, author of the 5-year column "The Anti-Diet Project" on Refiner29, and force behind The 67 Percent Project, joins me for a chat about all things real life, and Not dieting. Kelsey shares the moment, "somewhere between an epiphany and a panic attack," when she decided to be done with dieting. And from there, what's next? An eating coach, the Intuitive Eating book, writing her memoir (see below), and how life can be hard, either way. We also touch on representation in pop culture, and a different way to look at some of our favorite shows (again!), a la her newest book. Taylor Wolfram, dietitian, vegan advocate, and HAES practitioner, wants you to know what veganism is, and what it definitely isn't (e.g. a diet). She posted about this on Instagram recently, knowing it would spark some controversy but willing to take that on. "It's just the tip of the iceberg," she wrote in her post on Instagram. We answer a listener's question about some family health history and current heart health issues, related to veganism. We talk about how veganism and the Eating Disorder treatment worlds can seem at odds. We talk about the Health Halo and pervasive Diet Culture messaging surrounding veganism, and how to decode it. And we talk about why Taylor's passion is helping vegans embrace Health at Every Size, and vice versa. Replay! Lindsay Stenovec, dietitian and host of The Nurtured Mama podcast, joins me to talk about the tenth principle of Intuitive Eating. At the end, nutrition is brought back into the picture! This book was authored by two dietitians, after all. Lindsay and I talk about why it's important that nutrition is taken OFF the table while clients work on eating intuitively. Diet culture has hijacked our thoughts around nutrition, making it nearly impossible to feel "good" about eating anything but fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. Orthorexia, an eating disorder defined by an unhealthy fixation on eating healthy foods, is an eating disorder that's hard for some people to even recognize. Dieting is the norm. In this episode, we hope to help you understand why it's OK—healthy, even—to put nutrition thoughts away while you work on other aspects of Intuitive eating, including self-trust and self-awareness. And it's OK to be interested in nutrition again, eventually. Lindsay's work and Nurtured Mama community can be found on her website, nutritioninstincts.com . Replay! Paige Smathers, dietitian and host of the podcast Nutrition Matters, joins me to dive into the sixth principle of Intuitive Eating. Satisfaction is different than satiety, but it can take some time to identify their unique qualities. Our diet-focused culture has a hard time with satisfaction, as it implies feeling pleasure in your food experiences. Our clients have struggled with this principle, as it requires coming to peace with our food preferences and cravings. Replay! Julie Duffy Dillon, aka the Food Peace RD, joins me to discuss Intuitive Eating (IE) Principle #3: Make Peace With Food. All foods! Not just the healthy, or "fun", foods. We start by outlining what's called "The Last Supper Phenomenon" of dieting. This sets everyone up for failure, yet we see it happen so often. It's just one factor that pulls your dieting pendulum too far to one side, so it will inevitably swing right back. Read the book: Intuitive Eating: A Revolutionary Program That Works Julie and I dig into the importance of making peace with all foods, how this concept is largely misunderstood, and what steps anyone can take to start the process. As Julie says, EVERY food has its place, and anything can be unhealthy for us in excess. (Yep, even broccoli!) Replay! This is the episode that kicked of the RD Real Talk podcast Intuitive Eating series—10 episodes all about the principles, and evidence, behind Intuitive Eating (IE). Evelyn Tribole is one of the co-authors of the book on Intuitive Eating, and dishes about how the idea came to be, why she wrote it (with Elyse Resche), and what that was like in the mid-90s. For reference: It was first published in 1995! If you haven't already, buy the book and dig in. For now, tune in to hear it all from the OG IE dietitian herself. Jessica Jones, dietitian and host of Food Heaven podcast, joins me to chat about her career, and then, Whole30. Most of the things we talked about: Food heaven show on YouTube, and the Food Heaven podcast “I guess the Whole30 is very much still a thing”, on my blog Marci Evans on Food Addiction: Food Pscyh & RD Real Talk (#26) “Why Fear of Sugar Addiction May Be More Toxic Than Sugar Is” by Rebecca Scritchfield RD PCOS Nutrition resources: Julie Duffy Dillon & Rachael Hartley Other stuff: Join the extended podcast conversations and meet fellow real-talkers by joining our community, Patreon.com/RdRealTalk Your host, Heather Caplan: HeatherCaplan.com, @heatherDCRD, @RDRealTalk Have you left a review on iTunes yet? Jessi Haggerty, aka host of The Body Love Project podcast, joins me on the show. We talk about how she began questioning the efficacy of weight-loss diets in college, and how that felt as a young RD. Jessi is also a personal trainer, tired of the fat-phobia and fear-based food messaging in the fitness industry. Her work is based around body inclusivity, women's health, and creating environments supportive of Intuitive Eating and Health at Every Size (HAES). Also in this episode: Jessi shares a personal update that explains why we've heard a little less from her on her podcast and blog this year. Lauren Newman is what we in the dietetic world call an "RD2Be". She's completing a Coordinated program at UT Austin, and will be joining us with her RD certification soon. She is part of a Facebook group for new and aspiring dietitians who are interested in intuitive eating (IE) and Health at Every Size (HAES). I reached out to her after she posted about something big; she gave a presentation on Intuitive Eating and HAES in her Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT) class. Baller move. In this first IE Stories episode, we get real about the initial assumptions Lauren had about these philosophies. She tried hard to prove them wrong, to stay in the weight-based world of nutrition that she believed to be true, to "fight" the so-called obesity epidemic! Then we talk about the Big Nutrition Goal she has for her career, and the work it will take to get there. Find more about Lauren on her site, laurennewmanrd2be.com, or via Instagram @gofeedyourself_. This is the first RD Real Talk coaching episode! These coaching episodes are an extension of the Intuitive Eating series, exploring the concepts with listeners who reached out and agreed to have a one-on-one recorded session. (All personal details are kept anonymous.) In this coaching episode: A dietitian is about to switch jobs and will now have a new schedule, and will be able to step away from weight-loss work. She's realizing that the diet mentality has a stronghold on her approach to nutrition. She dabbled in weight loss for her wedding, and wrapped much her of dietitian identity up in certain healthy eating practices and messages. She's curious about intuitive eating, but struggling with how to implement the principles for herself. To get access to more one-on-one RD Real Talk coaching episodes, become a Patreon of the show! Robyn Nohling, dietitian and Family Nurse Practitioner, is one of my favorite gals to chat with about all things intuitive eating. She has written about the ways in which she shifted her approach to exercise on her blog, The Real Life RD. We have both trained for endurance running events, and think of exercise a little differently now that we do work in this space. We also both work with women recovering from Hypothalamic Amenorrhea (HA), during which exercise may have to take a back seat, or be stopped entirely. We dive into what it means to enjoy exercise, feeling the difference between exercising for the psychological benefits instead of in hopes of physical changes. Our culture’s obsession with suffering and powering through workouts in order to “gain” fitness or prove that you’re strong shapes doesn’t foster “health” in every sense. Listen to this episode to step back and take a hard look at your habits and patterns with exercise, and try to keep an open mind to approaching it with a little more self-awareness and care. We dive into what it means to respect, versus love (or hate) the shape, size, and feel of your body. Kim Hoban, a certified Intuitive Eating (IE) counselor and good RD friend of mine, is on the show to help me cover IE principle 5. Feeling fullness isn't as, well, intuitive, as you might think. But when most people think about IE, they think it's just about "eating when you're hungry and stopping when you're full." So, we finally get to chat about the second half of that assumption. We talk about why fullness isn't introduced until you're already halfway through the 10 IE principles, and what it means to FEEL full versus satisfied. (More on that next week!) To be honest, we both see a lot of clients use fullness as an excuse to restrict their intake, or misunderstand the sensation entirely. We get real about that. This is also a big conversation topic in the virtual course I lead for active women on combining sports nutrition and intuitive eating—fullness is something many athletes shy away from. Emily Fonnesbeck joins me to talk about an Intuitive Eating (IE) principle that is challenging for many people—#4 how to challenge the food police. We review the various types of Food Police that may be directing traffic in your mind on any given day–from the Ally to the Informant—and how to start distinguishing the foes from the friend. Food police may be most familiar to those who have had an eating disorder. The voices sound a lot like an example provided by Dr. Laura Hill in her TEDx talk on anorexia. Even in the absence of an eating disorder, diet culture employs food policing thoughts that influence how we eat throughout the day. In the episode, we emphasize that restrictive eating is NOT healthy eating, and that not everyone obsesses over food. It is possible to go throughout your day without these food policing thoughts and internal debates. Check out more of Emily's writing and work on her site: EmilyFonnesbeck.com Next up: Kim Hoban, and principle #5: How to respect your fullness! Questions? Jennifer McGurk joins me to discuss Intuitive Eating principle #2: Honoring Your Hunger. At the time of recording, I was pregnant and she had just given birth, so we start with some real talk about the IE lessons these experiences will teach you! If you decide to skip ahead, we get into the principle and how it's essential to intuitive eating. It's also essential to have acknowledged your diet mentality, and put any goals of weight loss (or "management" aside) in order to really hear and heed your body's hunger signals. Jennifer is an eating disorder specialist, so part of our conversation touches on how this principle is used for eating disorder treatment, when appropriate. Sumner Brooks, an eating disorder dietitian and founder of EDRDpro, joins me to discuss the first principle of Intuitive Eating, Rejecting the Diet Mentality. As long as the diet mentality is prioritized—or as Sumner puts it, we make food decisions based on the outcome expected—it will be nearly impossible to eat intuitively. ETA: There seems to have been an issue with the audio recording, so Sumner's voice sounds a little off. Technology isn't always our best friend. :) While listening to this episode, think about your own diet mentality and what drives the food choices you make every day. Are you avoiding or working toward a certain outcome (e.g. weight, "health", or something else)? Or are you trying to tune into your body's signals of hunger, fullness, satisfaction, etc? (More on all of that to come!) It may be uncomfortable to realize that even though you may not be following a "diet," there are still many filters, or rules, by which you make food decisions. We know how that feels. We've been there. Stick with us. We give examples of the various levels of diet thinking, and how to work through this principle to bring yourself some food freedom. It helps you build the foundation on which you'll continue to build your intuitive eating habits throughout this series. Questions? Reach out anytime: RDRealTalk at Gmail dot com.
