Dawn shares her journey of discovering her passion for nutrition and hosting, and how she integrates her love for feeling good into her work. They also talk about the power of gratitude, playfulness, and self-care in maintaining positive energy. Dawn emphasizes the importance of prioritizing physical well-being, including sleep, movement, protein, and fiber. They also address the common practice of skipping meals in the beauty industry and the benefits of fueling the body properly. In this conversation, Dawn Jackson Blatner, RDN, and Bobbi discuss the importance of making small changes to improve overall well-being. They emphasize the power of focusing on one thing at a time, such as staying hydrated or eating a nutritious breakfast, and testing it out for seven days. They also discuss the importance of finding joy in everyday life, especially in challenging situations like beauty school. Dawn encourages listeners to make things 5% more fun or easier and to be authentic in their actions. They also discuss the impact of thoughts on feelings and actions, and the importance of not letting others' opinions define one's self-worth. Takeaways Authenticity and joy are key in the beauty industry, as they attract others and create a positive and magnetic energy. Finding joy and feeling good is a choice that requires active effort and a focus on gratitude, playfulness, and self-care. Prioritizing physical well-being, including sleep, movement, protein, and fiber, is essential for maintaining good energy levels and overall health. Skipping meals in the beauty industry is common but detrimental to energy levels and well-being. Taking time to fuel the body properly can lead to increased energy and success in the industry. Making small changes and focusing on one thing at a time can lead to significant improvements in overall well-being. Finding joy in everyday life, even in challenging situations, is important for personal growth and happiness. Being authentic and true to oneself is key to long-term success and fulfillment. Thoughts have a powerful impact on feelings and actions, and it's important to challenge negative self-talk and beliefs. A sports Dietitian Nutritionist should not food police you or your gymnast. I know many gymnasts are afraid to work with a dietitian because they're worried they'll have to go on some crazy strict diet of bland boring food. They're afraid they'll be banned from enjoying their favorite dessert or Starbucks drink. Or based on past experiences with other "nutritionists", they're stressed about weigh-ins or being told to lose weight. A dietitian nutritionist acting like the food police to your gymnast isn't going to help them or do them any favors in the future. Why won't I restrict what your gymnast can and can't have? Why am I not going to make her follow strict food rules? Because that approach ultimately doesn't work for a gymnast with big goals and dreams. A restrictive "clean" diet might work for the first couple of weeks to lose weight, but the long-term effects on performance, body image, body composition, and relationship with food can be devastating. And become a life-long struggle. These high-level gymnasts become so under-fueled, their bodies can't keep up with the amount of training needed at the higher levels. That's why we follow a science and research-backed approach to sports nutrition. The philosophy that food is neutral and all foods can fit into a gymnast's diet. So your gymnast is healthy, happy, and performing her best.Listen in to hear why a sports dietitian nutritionist should not food police your gymnast. In this episode you'll hear about: Is your gymnast addicted to sugar... or is something else going on?What happens to body composition due to restriction, binging, and underfuelingThe importance of developing a competent eater for adolescence and beyond. Almost everyone has experienced a painful breakup, whether with a romantic partner, friend, or family member. We might think the ending of a relationship marks a "failure" of that relationship, but it might actually be a reroute, a revival, and a reclamation of yourself. And, just because a relationship ends doesn't mean it wasn't a success. What if we perceived breakups as a beautiful journey of discovering something new about ourselves? In this episode of Whole, Full, and Alive–and the first in-person interview episode of the podcast–Catie engages Creative Business Coach Diana Davis in a conversation about breakup grief, healing, and revival. They share tidbits of wisdom gathered from their own experiences of ending relationships and discuss the importance of acknowledging your feelings and honoring yourself. Tune in and listen to some processing prompts and actionable suggestions at the end! We make decisions in everything we do—even the simple act of choosing what to eat is making a decision. But oftentimes, it's difficult to know whether we're deciding based on our intuition or not. Sometimes, it's anxiety's voice telling us to do or not to do something. And if we end up listening to the wrong voice, we may end up stuck in a place that is harmful in the long run. In the sixth episode of Whole, Full, & Alive, Caitie delves into the topic of decision-making. She explores the two voices—intuition and anxiety—that influence how we decide on everything in life. Learn how to make intuitive decisions in both small and big life events. If you want to start making intuitive decisions that allow you to grow, listen to this episode!
We've eaten up the rigid, restrictive diet programs that create this sense of false safety. These programs instill a sense of comfort and concreteness that's hard to find in our unpredictable world. But is this comfort worth losing all the other things that make you feel alive? What if we found out what gives us a secure sense of fullness instead? In the second episode of Whole, Full, & Alive, Caitie delves into the topic of "fullness" and the two foundations cultivating it. This episode will help you process your relationship with fullness and adopt actionable nutrition tools that help you live your most authentic life. If you find yourself stuck in the comforts of pseudo-safety, listen to this episode and jump out of the spiral!
What are the things that you think you need to “complete” you? What things do you feel you need to have or accomplish in order to feel whole? Believe it or not, the endless pursuit of some of these things might be holding you back from truly living the life you love and deserve. You will never feel as good as you can possibly feel if you depend on something outside of yourself to feel complete. In Whole, Full, & Alive's pilot episode, Caitie reflects on “wholeness”, its importance, and how we can reach the state of feeling complete and ‘whole' on our own. Tune in and discover sustainable actions that will empower you to feel whole and build that home within you.
Women's Health, Wisdom, and. . . WINE! is a weekly conversation with practitioners, providers, patients, and healers about complex reproductive medicine and women's health challenges, the value of an integrative approach to these challenges, many of the women's health topics you're already thinking about but uncomfortable talking about, and my personal favorite. . . WINE!Weight loss has, and will continue to be, one of the most challenge exercises (no pun intended!) that one will ever have to undergo. There are so many "solutions" out there and most of them are designed to address the weight; however, they fail to address how the weight got there in the first place. From weight loss gurus to get slim quick gurus peddling their overnight weight loss success snake oil to starvation diets and surgical interventions, the weight loss industry is growing and probably will continue to do so for many years to come. In addition to the ever prevalent social determinants of health, the (stressful) conditions in which we live, learn, work, and play, eating patterns, physical activity levels, and sleep routines, genetics, and taking certain medications also play a role. It can be difficult to make healthy food choices and get enough physical activity if these conditions do not support health. Differences in social determinants of health affect chronic disease outcomes and risks, including obesity, among racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic groups as well as in different geographies and among people with different physical abilities. What would your life look like in 5 years if you continue on a downward health spiral? What would your life look like in 5 years if you had the health outcomes that matter most to you? On this episode Dietitian Nutritionist and Diabetes Care and Education Specialist Kim Rose speaks of her work to keep nutrition advice simple and inclusive, the impact of plant-based eating, her work in Florida a recent covid-19 hotspot, and her podcast. Kim is a Florida RDN who specializes in health and wellness concerns for underserved populations. Her inclusive approach and philosophy revolve around “making nutrition easy and attainable” especially for people with diabetes. "Speaking to communities of color, I realized it was very important for them to still hold on to their traditional foods, but make it in such a way that it is healthful for them. Additionally, with that, even before getting into the nitty gritty of what the diet should entail, I realized that there was just this mental block about them. They didn't want me to speak to them about diabetes, I guess they thought that I was the food police per se. So I said, you know, it's, it's not difficult at all. It's quite simple."
