Have you ever been told your irregular cycle or acne is “just hormones”? In this episode of The Wellness Effect, we're diving deep into PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome)—what it really is, why so many women are being misdiagnosed, and how it connects to much more than just your ovaries. We share our personal experiences with PCOS, the shocking gaps in medical understanding, and how insulin resistance—not just hormones—is often the hidden root cause. If you've struggled with irregular periods, acne, unexplained weight gain, or frustrating doctor visits, this episode is a must-listen. In this episode, we discuss... The three types of PCOS—and why they're all connected to insulin resistance How high insulin disrupts your hormones, causes cysts, and impacts weight The emotional toll of misdiagnosis and poor doctor support Why conventional bloodwork can be misleading What the Dutch Test can and can't tell you Tips for managing PCOS symptoms naturally and understanding your body's cues Key Takeaways: Insulin resistance—not just hormones—is often the root cause of PCOS. Many women are told their symptoms are due to hormone issues, but elevated insulin is usually what drives cyst formation, irregular periods, acne, and stubborn weight gain. You can have PCOS without cysts—and cysts without PCOS. The name “Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome” is misleading. It's not about having cysts—it's about what's causing the hormonal dysregulation behind the scenes. Standard lab tests often miss the full picture. Conventional bloodwork may come back “normal,” even when your body is under stress. Functional testing, like the DUTCH test, paired with symptom awareness and lifestyle context, gives a more accurate view of your hormonal health. My journey with PCOS started when I was 17 years old. I was told by doctors I had cysts on my ovaries. They didn't think I had polycystic ovarian syndrome because I was not overweight and did not have excessive facial hair at the time. But I was on birth control at the time. (This suppresses PCOS) What helped me most was working with a naturopath, using holistic remedies to balance my hormones and help regulate my periods. Since I was 13, my cycles have been irregular. I have been with my husband for 6 years & haven't fallen pregnant. Every women's journey with PCOS is different; but there is a protocol we can follow to address & eliminate symptoms to find the root cause. Some women have been healed from PCOS & were able to successfully conceive, lose weight, regulate their cycles, put a stop to cravings, & restore energy levels. Putting PCOS symptoms into remission is possible. It just takes being BOLD to get started. PCOS is the most common cause of infertility in women, affecting between 10% and 18% of women of childbearing age. If you suffer from PCOS or infertility, falling pregnant can be a difficult journey. While we have seen links between conditions like gum disease and PCOS, the role of diet and fertility is one that doesn't get discussed often. Those with a PCOS diagnosis, should you be looking at strategies on how to cure PCOS permanently? What is PCOS? PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome) is a hormonal disorder that affects the ovaries and ovulation in women of childbearing age. Allison is an intuitive medium and owner of Souls of a Feather where she offers readings online. In this episode, she shares her experience with both prenatal and postpartum mood disorders. Allison suffered from PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome), and tried for two years to get pregnant. She finally decided to take a break from trying to focus on her health. She asked her doctor for birth control and in the time it took to fill the prescription, she got pregnant. Allison suffered from severe hyperemesis gravidarum which landed her in the hospital for a week. She had gestational diabetes which turned into hypoglycemia. Instead of being excited about her pregnancy, she felt anxious and paranoid. Postpartum only seemed to be worse for Allison. After a traumatic birth, she felt anxious and couldn't sleep. She was in the hospital multiple times for severely high blood pressure, and it was brushed off as anxiety. She still couldn't sleep. She was shuffled back and forth between her OB and her primary care physician, even though she was asking for help. Allison finally ended up in the hospital and spent several weeks recovering at her mother's house, away from her baby. Allison's story is a reminder of just how important it is to support mothers while pregnant and after giving birth. She says there aren't enough resources or education on mental health issues. How can we take care of the babies if we can't take care of the mothers? Postpartum Support International- 1-800-944-4773LaborLessons.comEnjoy listening to Labor Lessons? Leave a review here! Episode 150: Peeling Back The Layers of PCOS Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome affects 6-12% of women of childbearing age. According to the revised criteria, PCOS is identified via amenorrhea, polycystic ovaries on an ultrasound, or a combination of hirsutism and hyperandrogenism. Women with PCOS often see elevated LH to FSH, high free Testosterone, low SHBG, high fasted insulin or cortisol dysregulation on serum lab work. Because PCOS is a mix of so many different systemic dysfunctions, it can be hard to treat. Medical solutions include Metformin, birth control, spironolactone, and finasteride. Together we discuss the pathophysiology of PCOS and how we approach it from natural coaching angles. www.theexcellencecartel.com
The Catalyst: Sparking Creative Transformation in Healthcare
“I ultimately feel like doctors should be judged by how we get people off medications,” explains Jennifer Roelands, MD. Jennifer is the CEO and Founder of Well Woman MD. As an OBGYN with integrative medicine training and over a decade of women's health experience, Jennifer is a catalyst for change within the healthcare community. She believes that women's health requires a team based, integrative approach in order to really help the patient to the fullest extent and she is working to provide this model in her clinic. When Jennifer was trying to conceive her second child, she found out that her fertility was being impacted by both PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome) and Hashimotos Disease. To her dismay, her trusted OBGYN had nothing to offer her aside from birth control pills and a slew of other medications to counteract the side effects of the birth control pills. She realized there had to be a better way and this encouraged her to begin taking her health into her own hands by learning more about integrative medicine and really diving into information about nutrition and thyroid function. She discovered that main drivers of symptoms for PCOS are inflammation, insulin resistance, and gut health. And through that discovery, Jennifer was able to modify her diet and habits to improve her symptoms and heal her body all without the pill. Now, she uses what she has learned to help women get off of that endless carousel of medications and regain control over their own health. Just because healthcare has been handled one way for a long time does not mean it is necessarily the best way of doing things. Tune into this week's episode of The Catalyst to learn more about how to take control of your own health. Learn about the importance of nutrition, hormones, gut health, and how having an integrative team approach can make a huge difference in your health outcomes. Quotes • “I ultimately feel like doctors should be judged by how we get people off medications. We should be judged by that, not judged by how many people we can see in 10 minutes.” (7:40-7:52 | Jennifer) • “I think with PCOS, for me, it's a matter of trying to teach someone how to understand their body much better and understand their health and how my PCOS is different than your PCOS. So therefore, you need to focus on these particular aspects.” (11:43-11:56 | Jennifer) • “If I can revamp or reimagine women's health, I would basically want it to be an integrative team. So I think that health care for women needs to be a team approach. We need to be able to take care of a patient. Here's your doctor, here's your nutritionist, here's your acupuncturist. Here's your health coach, here's your trainer, it needs to be this approach where we're basically a team to help someone.” (21:28-21:56 | Jennifer) • “The patients want this kind of approach, we just need to learn to deliver it in a better model.” (23:25-23:32 | Jennifer) Links Connect with Jennifer Roelands: Website: https://www.wellwomanmd.com Instagram: @wellwomanmd (https://www.instagram.com/wellwomanmd/) Connect with Lara: Website: https://drlarasalyer.com Instagram: @drlarasalyer Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/drlarasalyer Linked-In: https://www.linkedin.com/in/drlarasalyer/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/DrLaraSalyer TikTok: @Creativity.Doctor Podcast production and show notes provided by HiveCast.fm
This episode explores PCOS. What classifies as a diagnosis, what are the symptoms, what are the causes. And most importantly, how can you fix it? I challenge you to empower yourself to take control of your health and wellbeing. The majority of women who are diagnosed with PCOS can reverse and improve their symptoms with diet, exercise and naturally balancing their hormones with the right foods. PCOS is not a permanent diagnosis. Like all episodes, this does not replace a medical consultation. if you have any comments or feedback please DM me @kryselek. If you have any specific medical questions, please consult with your primary care provider.

PCOS is the most common form of infertility in women. What maybe at the root cause of PCOS? And can there be anything that you could do about?
A woman's weight and BMI during and after pregnancy is often discussed and debated. This is especially true in the case of high-weight women, who, as research shows, have a higher risk of complications like cesarean birth. Today's episode is to discuss high weight women in pregnancy and when we need to concerned and when we don't PLUS, we also discuss some very questionable myths and treatments followed for high-weight women that you need to be aware of. But these in no way imply that people with very low body weight have uncomplicated pregnancies. To prove that, we compare pregnancy risks, body weight gain, and recovery in low-weight, normal weight and high-weight pregnant women and see clearly why a lower than ideal body weight could also pose significant birth complications. PS. Excessive weight is sometimes associated with ovulation issues. That, in turn, could be caused due to PCOS (PolyCystic Ovarian Syndrome), which is associated with a hormonal imbalance that messes up your ability to metabolize. Here are a few known complications faced by high-weight women during pregnancy: >> Preeclampsia -- Condition associated with high blood pressure and other complications, including retaining fluid and end-organ dysfunction. In extreme cases, it can lead to eclampsia or seizures, a severe form of preeclampsia. >> Diabetes (pregestational and gestational) -- Diabetes that's detected during the first trimester or the beginning of the second trimester is called pregestational diabetes. These can lead to abnormalities of development and more chances of miscarriages. Gestational diabetes is a form of diabetes that's developed in women during pregnancy. Women who have this condition wouldn't have had diabetes previously. >> Preterm delivery -- A condition that might cause pregnant women to go into labor early. >> Macrosomia -- High weight of the baby >> Higher weight loss -- High-weight women tend to lose more weight during pregnancy, which is unhealthy. It's healthy to end a pregnancy with a greater weight than what they started with. >> High risk of C section -- High-weight women are at a 70 % risk of a C-section -- even after complications like hypertension and diabetes have been neutralized. >> Less sensitivity to oxytocin -- Hence an increased need for oxytocin augmentation. >> The need to use IPCs (Intrauterine Pressure Catheter) -- a device placed inside the pregnant woman's uterus to monitor uterine contractions during labor. >> Pelvic outlet is narrower -- This is alleviated by making positional changes. >> Uterine tilt if a woman previously had high weight and lost it abruptly -- This is alleviated by making positional changes. >> Remodelling of bones -- As the bones become more narrow, changes are caused in getting the baby. >> Shoulder dystocia and postpartum hemorrhage -- Massage from postpartum hemorrhage is also harder. >> Difficult labor -- Caused due to positional issues of internal organs and the baby A common pregnancy complication seen (especially) in low-weight women: >> Hyphemeresis -- A condition that causes severe metabolic disturbances, including abnormal amounts of nausea and vomiting. This episode of Busine$$ of the V is all about the intersection of women's health and technology. Alyssa and Rachel speak with Kathrin Folkendt, who began in the tech world, later combining technology with women's health and is now the founder of Perla and Femtech Insider. Kathrin discusses PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome) – a condition that she has been diagnosed with and one that affects 10 percent of women. Kathrin discusses her own experience with PCOS as well as points where many women struggle with this condition such as the difficult process of diagnosis, dealing with a chronic condition, and the general lack of information. The treatment for PCOS is – or should be – multidisciplinary and involve professionals such as gynecologists, endocrinologists, nutritionists, coaches or trainers, and sometimes mental health specialists. This multidisciplinary approach is where Kathrin's startup can really come into play. Perla will attempt to deal with the whole process: early in the diagnosis process all the way through the care of a chronic condition. Kathrin's desire is to create more awareness of women's health issues like PCOS, making the process easier for women and, ideally, leading to more research and funding for these important topics.
