We deconstruct common myths and misconceptions about eating disorders, exercise, metabolic processes and why the term “sick enough” is such an apt title for a text and discussion on this group of complex and life-threatening mental health conditions.

Today Heather interviews Tracy Brown, registered dietitian and trauma-informed eating disorder recovery coach about all the physical issues that can accompany or follow seasons of dieting, disordered eating, or an eating disorder. Are you always cold? Have you experienced seasons of hair loss? Have you had joint or bone density issues? GI and digestive tract issues, no matter what you eat? Today Heather shares her story of several strange physical symptoms she's experienced over the years--from easily broken bones to esophagus issues--and how the decades of an unhealthy relationship with food have hit her with new symptoms and strange side effects, years later, even after she's recovered from disordered eating. In today's show, Heather and Tracy discuss issues like bone loss, muscle loss, joint issues, sexual health issues, fertility, and cardiac arrest and other heart issues. They also talk about how being malnourished (the technical way to look at dieting and calorie restriction of any kind) can cause hair loss, nail growth to stop, and your skin's appearance to change. Tracy explains how the human stress response acts as a protective mechanism to keep us alive by deciding which systems are most important to keep working. If your body only has a limited amount of resources and you are limiting food, the body has to choose whether or not to keep running your heart, lungs, and brain or to grow your hair. The body is smart enough to know that the heart, lungs, and brain are most important. Dieting Can Hurt Your Health: Physical, Mental, and Spiritual Heather and Tracy discuss how serious it is to put our bodies in a situation where it has to make this kind of choice. They also discuss how even without physical symptoms, there may be emotional and spiritual symptoms connected to months, years, or decades of disordered eating. In this episode of Recover to Flourish, I dive into a topic that many individuals with eating disorders struggle with: feeling like they are not "sick enough" for recovery. As someone who has experienced this feeling myself, I know how challenging it can be to seek help and support when you feel like your symptoms aren't "bad enough."Through my own experience and research, I explore the reasons why individuals with eating disorders may feel this way, including the glamorisation and trivialisation of eating disorders in the media, distorted body image and behaviours, and feelings of shame or stigma. I also offer practical tips and strategies for overcoming the comparison trap and seeking the help and support you need to recover. If you're struggling with feeling like you're not "sick enough" for eating disorder recovery, this episode is for you. I'm answering a listener question for today's episode and the question is... "hi, Victoria! I was wondering if you could do a podcast episode on imposter syndrome with eating disorders. I have been struggling a lot with regard to whether or not I deserve help or actually fall under the label of having an eating disorder because I'm not physically sick. I guess I feel like because I binge eat, I feel like I'm not malnourished or physically sick so how can I fall under the category? I'm not thin either so it's hard to feel like I can actually use the title or accept that I have an eating disorder." Taking the first step toward treatment is terrifying, and riddled with information overload… and that's where Ibbits Newhall comes in. Ibbits runs a consulting business as a treatment resource consultant. She works with individuals and families on treatment planning and what to do when navigating recovery – like step down options, residential programs, after care plans… any point of recovery. She's the person who can connect people with whomever they need to connect with for treatment. Ibbits is really well connected with a lot of different programs and people. She was a founding member and secretary of IAEDP-New York, which is our lovely IAEDP chapter. She served on the advisory board of CSAB (Center for the Study of Anorexia and Bulimia in NYC) and on the board of the Binge Eating Disorder Association. Currently, Ibbits serves on the Advisory Board Health 2021. She has worked with dozens of families and individuals to help them find the right treatment plans. Maybe you're struggling with disordered eating, or you're the family member of someone who is. Today, we're talking about what to do when you're in these positions. When you have no idea what to do, what to look out for, and you're terrified… Ibbits is going to share all her wisdom (along with her really entertaining stories). Tweetable Quotes “As a family member, it's important to understand the seductive power of this disease. If they can possibly begin to comprehend – although I think it is very difficult unless you've been in that brain yourself – how that seductive power permeates every corner of that individual's being.” – Ibbits Newhall “For the individual, [treatment] is terrifying. Even if, intellectually, the individual knows very well how destructive this disease is and what it's taking away from them, it is terrifying and scary beyond belief to think of taking that first step. And if they've been through this a number of times, thinking of taking that painful step yet again… and for parents to understand what that undertaking is.” – Ibbits Newhall “There's this narrow, tiny pinprick of light through which individuals are looking, and they don't see any other path [for their life]... and there is a world of possibility out there.” – Ibbits Newhall Resources: Ibbits Newhall's Consulting Website Recovery Roadmap Series for families Sick Enough by Dr. Jennifer Gaudiani LEAVE A REVIEW + help someone who may need this podcast by sharing this episode. Listen to hear Dr. G's advice on how to break free from the "I'm not sick enough" mindset. ABOUT OUR GUEST Dr. Gaudiani is an eating disorders expert physician and the Founder and Medical Director of the Gaudiani Clinic. Board Certified in Internal Medicine, she completed her undergraduate degree at Harvard, medical school at Boston University School of Medicine, and her internal medicine residency and chief residency at Yale. In 2008, she was one of the founding team members of the ACUTE Center for Eating Disorders at Denver Health. After seven great years there, she left as its Medical Director to pursue her vision of outpatient care, founding the Gaudiani Clinic. During her years at ACUTE, Dr. Gaudiani became a nationally recognized internist for her work on the medical complications of eating disorders. Dr. Gaudiani's book, Sick Enough: A Guide to the Medical Complications of Eating Disorders During the more than seven years that she's helped run the highest level of care in the country, providing definitive medical stabilization to critically ill patients with eating disorders, Dr. Gaudiani discovered that there are hardly any doctors who understand eating disorders. Even when people have a great mental health and nutritional outpatient team, they almost always lack a medical doctor in their community who has the expertise, time, and interest in providing superb care that motivates recovery and wellness. This may mean that patients have been seen by a physician who doesn't understand the nuances of an eating disorder, either from the emotional or the physical perspective. It may mean that eating disorder treatment professionals have no physician backup to support patients while they continue doing vital outpatient therapeutic work. It may mean that loved ones have not encountered a doctor who can provide families with the reassurance and expertise needed to diagnose, treat, and communicate clearly the medical complications associated with eating disorders. Dr. Jennifer Gaudiani wants patients to be safe as they continue outpatient therapy, clinicians to feel supported as they do that therapy, and families to be clear about what's going on medically. Just a quick content warning: on this episode and in this post, we're going to be discussing eating disorders and diets. If that's not a topic you're ready to listen to, skip this one and come back. We get it.We're in our second week of our deep dive into diet culture on our podcast, #WeGotGoals. And this week, we're speaking to Judith Matz, LCSW, ACSW. In terms of our deep dive, think of this episode as an intro to what diet culture is and a 101 on how to get out of it.Judith Matz is a therapist and nationally recognized speaker on the topics of diet culture, binge eating, emotional eating, body image, and weight stigma. She has her own journey with dieting and she shares on the episode how she inevitably broke up with her scale and made a professional choice to dedicate her professional life to undoing what diets have done to human beings.Matz is the co-author of the books The Diet Survivor's Handbook and Beyond a Shadow of a Diet. She also co-created two card decks that are meant to make an anti-diet and body positive lifestyle more accessible - The Making Peace with Food card deck and the Body Positivity card deck. We looked to her for her expertise in diets and diet culture for us. Read that as, I asked the stupid questions so you don't have to.You'll hear her define a diet as “Any time you make a change in how you eat for the purpose of weight loss.” I've been reading anti-diet books in public this month as I prepare for these interviews, and I've heard from a lot of people about their systems that aren't diets - they're more like do's and don'ts. According to Matz, your system is a diet if you're doing it to lose weight. And you'll also hear her define diet culture, which might as well be, “well, it's in the air you breathe,” but for the purpose of this conversation, it's “a belief that thinness is a moral virtue and thinness is health. Therefore, it's worth doing anything to achieve that status and when you get to that status, you'll be happier and healthier.”So, as we dive deeper, I'm convinced that diet culture is basically the matrix - our minds are so occupied with the illusion in front of us that if we just lose weight, we'll have the life of our dreams. We're so occupied, in fact, that we're willing to ignore the fact that you'll hear from several experts this month on diets and diet culture. Diets simply do not work.As Matz puts it, there's only a 3-5% chance that a diet will work - and there isn't a single program or plan that has the research to support sustained weight loss over 2-5 years. Resources:Judith Matz has a private practice in the Chicago area, which you can learn more about at www.judithmatz.com Follow Matz on Instagram @judmatzMatz's book The Diet Survivor's handbook is a good place to start if you're breaking out of diets - she reminds you that you haven't failed at diets - they've failed you.Matz goes through her Making Peace with Food card deck in our conversationYou'll hear Matz mention the book Sick Enough by Jennifer L. Gaudiani in reference to eating disorder recoveryPast episodes in this month's deep dive:A Deep Dive into Diet Culture with Dr. Lindo Bacon, pioneer in the HAES movementHere are some of the frequently asked questions I've heard since talking about this project as well as some resources (you'll also hear other experts speak to these this month):What's a diet? Any time you make a change in how you eat for the purpose of weight loss. What is diet culture? A belief that thinness is a moral virtue and thinness is health. Therefore, it's worth doing anything to achieve that status and when you get to that status, you'll be happier and healthier. What exactly is obesity? And should you use that word when talking about someone else's weight? In short, it's complicated, based on the BMI *which has its own problems* and no. Here's more research on the words we use and weight stigma. How do we know what our set point is? Ugh, it's complicated. But, you'l hear Dr. Bacon speak about how a body behaves when below it. (see the Keys' study “During the semi-starvation phase [about 1,500 calories a day] the changes were dramatic. Beyond the gaunt appearance of the men, there were significant decreases in their strength and stamina, body temperature, heart rate and sex drive. The psychological effects were significant as well. Hunger made the men obsessed with food. They would dream and fantasize about food, read and talk about food and savor the two meals a day they were given.”) How are we supposed to eat? That is literally the question that started this all and you'll hear more specific answers to this question throughout the month (From both Judith Matz and Dr. Alexis Conason, who you'll hear from next week), but when I spoke with Dr. Conason, it was clear that the question itself was rooted in diet culture. Damn it. Our bodies have cues that we'll speak to in the coming weeks that we've conditioned ourselves to ignore.
The “I'm not sick enough” narrative is a common one that comes up with those who have hypothalamic amenorrhea or disordered eating. It can often happen if you feel you don't perfectly fit a diagnosis of disordered eating or an eating disorder, the comparison trap of others being "worse than you", or disordered behaviours being normalised by society. In this podcast we breakdown: The main reasons you may not feel "sick enough" What to do if your symptoms don't fit into the DSM-5 criteria for an eating disorder The misconception of weight or BMI being a representation of how much you are suffering when struggling with disordered eating or compulsive exercise Why early intervention is so beneficial to recovery 5 key steps to break down the "I'm not sick enough" mentality so you can get the help you need and deserve to recover guilt-free . ❤️ Join my newsletter list for weekly motivation and inspiration and you'll also receive a FREE copy of my eBook "31 Ways to Boost Your Body Image" ❤️ Ready to get your period back? *Trigger Warning - if you are actively struggling with an eating disorder, this may be something to discuss with your treatment team before listening to this episode. This episode is not to be used for diagnostic purposes or in place of any form of therapy. Hi Guys and thank you for tuning into another episode of Get IN-TU-IT with Gila. Today, I interview Batya. Batya decided to keep her last name anonymous. She generously shared her eating disorder journey with us to be a resource for anyone struggling. Eating disorders never exist in a vacuum. For most people, their are many other variables that contribute to an eating disorder and create "the perfect storm" for the eating disorder to ensue. Many comorbidity's exist with eating disorders such as a diagnoses of depression, anxiety, bipolar or OCD. And this is very important to know- for so many people - the precursor for their eating disorder was actually going on a diet! I know dieting is alluring and it seems harmless but I want you to know that information before you decide to embark on a diet. Batya created a peer support group to help others who are struggling with an active eating disorder as well as those in recovery from an eating disorder. She used her pain from struggling with an eating disorder to create a way to help others. Anyone interested in joining the support group can email kindredforum@gmail.com with the subject line "Join." I asked Batya to share some resources that helped her through her eating disorder. She mentioned the following: 1. Relief - https://www.reliefhelp.org/blog/the-road-to-recovery-relief-resources-on-eating-disorders/ 2. Chazkeinu - https://chazkeinu.org/ 3. Books The book Batya referenced is Decoding Anorexia by Carrie Arnold. https://www.amazon.com/Decoding-Anorexia-Breakthroughs-Science-Disorders/dp/0415898676/ref=sr_1_1?gclid=Cj0KCQiAk4aOBhCTARIsAFWFP9Fj9evAsp8BBGyDBjeK7WQKFAr4G0M53n73qY-CTSxxmL8UsCJvWZEaAhiOEALw_wcB&hvadid=241610704058&hvdev=c&hvlocphy=1022987&hvnetw=g&hvqmt=e&hvrand=18184178650223117046&hvtargid=kwd-54799436010&hydadcr=15496_10339892&keywords=decoding+anorexia&qid=1640113116&sr=8-1 I love the book Sick Enough - https://www.amazon.com/Sick-Enough-Jennifer-L-Gaudiani/dp/0815382456/ref=tmm_pap_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=1640113926&sr=8-1 Check out the website EDRDPRO -https://edrdpro.com/resources/ - Their are so many resource's on this website I highly recommend it for nutrition professionals as well as anyone who is looking for Eating Disorder information. In this solocast, I delve into the eating disorder preservation mechanisms that your illness may employ as a method of holding you a prisoner of its captivity. I break down: The “not sick enough” rhetoric (see: Dr Jennifer Gaudiani, author of “Sick Enough" - https://www.sickenough.com) Agnostia and denial The “this is the last hurrah” mentality (“I'll recover when”/”I'll feel ready when”, etc.) Comparison: that individual is more deserving of recovery because they got “sicker” I'll only have a valid suffering when mine mimics that of theirs. TW: ED Recovery We’re back! And we’re joined by Molly from the My Big Fat Recovery Podcast! We talk about doctors (blech), fat shaming in recovery circles both in treatment… The post The “Sick Enough” Trap appeared first on Scapi Magazine.
Welcome to Episode 1! Have you ever thought you weren't actually sick enough to have an Eating Disorder? Today on the pod we are talking about where those thoughts come from, how they function to keep us sick, and how to work through them.
In this episode, Nicola and Florence have a conversation with Dr Jennifer Gaudiani, known as Dr G, one of the few Internal Medicine Physicians who is also certified as an eating disorder expert, and the founder and Medical Director of the Gaudiani Clinic. The Gaudiani Clinic is a HAES (Health At Every Size)®-informed provider and embraces treating people of all shapes and sizes.Together, they talked about Dr G's unique approach to support ED patients with good science and social justice, instead of condescension and assumptiveness. Dr G talked about the "cave person brain" survival mechanisms our bodies put in place to save them from starvation, and the epidemic of false health information out there. She also clarified why extreme dieting can lead to low resting heart rates and how to recognize the difference between an athlete's heart and a starved heart.Dr G also reminded us that our bodies are not the problem, diet culture and thin privilege are. None of us should feel the need to change our bodies to fit a system rooted in privilege. And that, as such, we need to work to disrupt the system that identifies that only some bodies have privilege. Every body deserves abundant, satisfying, balanced foods according to taste and satisfaction, as well as treatment, self-compassion, self-care and body trust. "If someone is eating restrictively in the name of health, and realizes their periods are missing and bone density is low, they now have proof that what they're doing is not healthy for them. That whatever they're doing is not done in the name of health, but that they're in fact trapped into fear." - Dr Jennifer GaudianiDr. Gaudiani's first book, Sick Enough: A Guide to the Medical Complications of Eating Disorders, was released by Routledge in October 2018 and is available on Amazon. To work with Dr Gaudiani and her team, reach out to the Gaudiani Clinic. At the end, Florence mentioned a podcast about the Burnout book, please find it here.To find support in your HA recovery:Get the "No Period. Mental health is one of the most important issues facing our youth everyday. In this episode, I talk with my mom to shed light on the invalidation of teen's mental health, the effect of parents' childhoods on the way they react to their children, and why the invisibility of certain mental illnesses causes them to be invalidated.
Today we cover the topic of does it matter if you have been ill for a long time when it comes to recovery, and we cover some of the things Adam has never really understood, when It comes to people taking recovery into their own hands.
In today's episode I talk about thinking I am not sick enough to be an advocate or activist in the chronic illness community. That is how I was feeling yesterday and coincidentally today I feel absolutely horrible. I'm laughing for doubting myself. We are all on our own paths, we don't need to compare ourselves to each other, we need to support each other as best we can. Take care of yourselves today! Weight stigma is harmful to human health at all sizes. The medical community upholds weight stigma and harms the very people they should be helping by weighing patients without informed consent, blaming weight on non weight related concerns like earaches and wrist pain, and recommending weight loss based on the unscientific BMI measurement. Medicine must work from the inside out to eradicate the problems they have perpetuated. Dr. Jennifer Gaudiani author of the book Sick Enough has made weight inclusive medical care a priority at her Denver based telemedicine clinic and she shares her ideas for why doctors must act to eradicate weight stigma on this episode. --- About Dr Gaudiani Jennifer L. Gaudiani, MD, CEDS, FAED, is the Founder and Medical Director of the Gaudiani Clinic. Board Certified in Internal Medicine, she completed her undergraduate degree at Harvard, medical school at Boston University School of Medicine, and her internal medicine residency and chief residency at Yale. Dr. Gaudiani has been a leader in the eating disorders field for over 10 years and served as the Medical Director at the ACUTE Center for Eating Disorders prior to founding the Gaudiani Clinic which is a Denver-based outpatient medical clinic dedicated to people with eating disorders and disordered eating. Dr. G is also the author of the book Sick Enough, a Guide to the Medical Complications of Eating Disorders. She talked to us about her journey to becoming a HAES-aligned doctor, and how she realized that HAES is the only ethical way to treat patients, especially those in larger bodies. She explains her "house on fire" analogy which helps those who struggle to understand that they are already sick enough with their eating disorder. We think everyone will benefit from listening to this podcast - patients and doctors alike. Dr. Jennifer Gaudiani returns to the show to discuss her new book Sick Enough: A Guide to the Medical Complications of Eating Disorders Dr. G shares helpful concepts that she uses throughout the book, such as the caveperson brain, our overall biological drive, and adaptation to keep us alive when we are struggling with disordered eating. “I’m not sick enough” is a statement that we hear with those that are struggling with disordered eating. We explore the beliefs around this statement in regards to seeking help with an eating disorder and caring for ourselves. The mind-body connection exists in us all, and we have to begin listening to emotions that are coming out in our physical body. The medical system silos body and soul and tends to want to get to the root of it vs the need for comfort and talking through things. We explore what needs to be changed in the healthcare system to prevent, diagnosis and treat disordered eating. So you know she is legit: Jennifer L. How can we practice more weight-inclusivity in healthcare? In dietetics? Why does this approach feel threatening, and divisive? What can we do about the lack of diversity in dietetics? Weight Inclusive Nutrition and Dietetics (WIND) Workshop recording: These aren’t easy questions to answer, or even talk about. But it’s necessary that we look at these issues and get ready to take them on. It’s imperative that we stop promoting and engaging weight-based discrimination.
