It's not just food and exercise that's affecting your metabolism. Addressing stored trauma and balancing hormones like insulin and cortisol are essential steps for transforming your body into an efficient fat burner. And speeding up a sluggish metabolism. In this minisode, I revealed the common misconceptions about aging and weight gain, empowering you to reclaim control over your health and wellbeing at any age. Key Takeaways: Building and maintaining muscle mass is essential for a heightened metabolism, as muscle tissue burns more calories at rest. Aging-related weight gain is often a result of diminished muscle mass, not just hormonal changes. Consuming whole foods that require effort to digest can significantly boost metabolism. Engaging in everyday non-purposeful exercises, like walking and household chores, contributes to metabolic efficiency. Releasing stored emotional trauma can lead to improved metabolic health by alleviating physical manifestations of stress and trauma. What up, Beasts! Welcome back to the show. Today, I'm hanging out with the incredible Anne Kent, a registered dietitian nutritionist and intuitive eating counselor, to talk about how we can truly nourish our bodies without falling into the traps of diet culture. We dive deep into the mindset shifts that happen when you stop restricting food, the importance of balancing nutrition with food freedom, and why learning to listen to your body takes time—but is so worth it. Anne shares how her background in diabetes education led her to create a meal planning app that actually supports intuitive eating (because, yes, you can have structure without dieting). We also get into the nuances of honoring your cravings while considering what actually makes you feel good, both physically and emotionally. We also tackle one of the biggest misconceptions about intuitive eating—the idea that it's just eating “whatever you want” without any thought. Anne breaks down how we can use our brain's executive functioning to make choices that align with both satisfaction and well-being, rather than swinging between restriction and chaos. We talk about healing your relationship with food, why feeling out of control around certain foods is often a sign of deeper restriction, and how to move past the pendulum swing to find real balance. Plus, I share my own experiences of unlearning diet culture's nonsense, including my ongoing journey to one day keep a pack of Oreos in my house without feeling like I need to inhale them all at once. This episode is packed with insights, real talk, and actionable takeaways—let's get into it! As always, I hope something lands with you today. I hope something you hear tugs on your heart-strings and/or I hope you laugh. Bio: Ann Kent is a Registered Dietitian, Certified Intuitive Eating Counselor and the owner of Peas and Hoppiness. Send us a textShow NotesSummary:In this episode of The Weight Loss Mindset Podcast, we explore how to regain control over food cravings by understanding the brain's reward system. The episode offers insights into how cravings are not a personal failing but a natural brain response, and it provides strategies for rewiring your brain to foster healthier eating habits. Through neuroplasticity, mindful eating, and strategic planning, listeners can achieve a balanced relationship with food that promotes both physical and emotional well-being.Key Takeaways:Cravings and the Brain: Cravings are a natural result of the brain's design to seek pleasure and avoid pain. Our modern food environment amplifies these cravings, but understanding this can help alleviate guilt and frustration. The Restriction Trap: Labeling food as “off-limits” can intensify cravings. Instead of strict restrictions, view all food as neutral and focus on balance and moderation. Emotional Eating Awareness: Emotional eating is not just about physical hunger but often a response to stress or loneliness. Recognizing emotional triggers is crucial for breaking the cycle and finding healthier coping mechanisms. Mindful Eating Practices: Mindful eating involves paying full attention to the eating experience, helping to reconnect with the body's hunger and fullness cues, leading to more satisfying and less impulsive eating habits. Rewiring Preferences: Gradually introduce more nutrient-dense foods by pairing them with favorites and being consistent. Over time, the brain can learn to enjoy healthier options as taste preferences adapt. Power of Planning: Effective planning and preparation can make healthy eating more accessible and less reliant on willpower. Having pre-prepared healthy options can increase the likelihood of making nutritious choices. Ready to transform your relationship with food? Start by implementing one mindful eating practice this week and prepare a few healthy meals in advance. Share your progress with us on social media. In this minisode, let's talk about the dangers of New Year resolutions, particularly in health and fitness. As the holiday season unfolds, many feel pressured to make drastic lifestyle changes at the start of the new year. I emphasize the importance of practicing a healthy relationship with food that doesn't resort to restriction and deprivation. I also share that New Year's resolutions can trigger nervous system responses similar to survival instincts, perpetuating cycles of scarcity and binge eating. sustainable change comes from setting intentions rather than rigid goals, focusing on self-love, and understanding the body's cues. By shifting the mindset from scarcity to abundance, individuals can create a safer, more nourishing relationship with food. Key Takeaways: Setting extreme New Year's resolutions often results in self-sabotage due to unmanageable pressure and unrealistic expectations. The nervous system plays a crucial role in food-related behaviors; switching from scarcity to an abundance mindset is essential for healthier eating habits. Intentions rooted in self-love and personal reflection can drive more sustainable lifestyle changes than rigid goals. Developing a sense of safety through nutrition and body image is key to overcoming negative eating patterns. Seeking guidance from experienced coaches can help unveil blind spots and pave the way for meaningful transformation. “The message we tell ourselves is the message of the life we're going to experience.”- Sandra Hauch In this episode, I invited my longtime acquaintance, Sandra Hauch to discuss her captivating journey of self-improvement and inner growth. I admire Sandra's ability to observe, listen, and then speak with impact, a quality that many aspire to cultivate. Together, we discuss the significance of overcoming personal limitations and embracing fear as a tool for growth and transformation. Sandra shares her experience of initiating her self-awareness journey in 2004, driven by a deep-seated question: "Who would you be if there were no limits?" Her path led her to numerous practices, including NLP and spiritual retreats, all aimed at peeling back layers to reveal her fullest potential. Our conversation highlights the importance of identifying core fears, such as fear of failure and not being enough, and how these fears create boundaries that can restrict personal and professional development. Key Takeaways: Sandra's journey began with a pivotal question about personal limits, leading to her ongoing engagement with personal growth techniques. Embracing fear and understanding its presence as a catalyst for self-discovery helps navigate through uncertainty and challenges. Releasing trauma by addressing past experiences and embracing forgiveness can lead to profound personal freedom and empowerment. Personal transformation is a continuous journey of nurturing self-compassion and developing healthier relationships with oneself and life aspects such as food and fitness If you've been listening to this podcast, and you're ready to take a timeout and focus on just you for a whole week, then I want to invite you to join me for the Transformation in Paradise Empyrean Retreat in Costa Rica May 24-31, 2025. Join me in today's minisode as I discuss why the path to health is about releasing stored energy patterns and aligning with our body's intrinsic needs and let's dive deep to understand why many remain stuck in cycles of self-sabotage, repeating behavior that derails health and fitness goals, often masking deeper issues with transient gains, only to revert to old patterns due to life's unpredictable happenings. I shared the conventional weight loss strategies, focusing on why diet cultures fail through terms like "protection mode" and "safety mode," and how emotional management links with lasting healthy transformations. By addressing the autonomic nervous system, I also tackles how unresolved emotional and physical traumas can trigger states where metabolism slows, leading to emotional overeating or binge behaviors. I reveal the alternative to the 'calories-in-calories-out' mindset by unlocking the power of the nervous system to foster true well-being, moving beyond the binge and delve into the compelling nature of our nervous system regulating our journey. Key Takeaways: Understanding the difference between "protection mode" and "safety mode" is crucial in overcoming self-sabotaging patterns related to eating and weight loss. The autonomic nervous system plays a pivotal role in managing stress and ensuring body safety, and its regulation is key to stopping compulsive overeating. Thought patterns and emotions majorly influence bodily reactions, which can lead to the reinforcement of unhealthy behavior unless interrupted Diets fail because they focus on food restrictions rather than addressing the underlying emotional triggers and nervous system imbalances. Lasting transformation is achieved not by rigorous dieting but by regulating the nervous system and embracing self-awareness of thought patterns and emotions. Throughout the minisode, I also discuss the concept of sugar addiction through the lens of the dopamine reward system and the psychological implications of food restriction. And the damage of relying on willpower alone instead of reprogramming your mindset and nervous system to change your relationship with sugar. And cut the cravings for good. If you're a self-proclaimed "sugar addict" and ready to live sugar-free, tune in with me today. We'll talk about the psychology behind cravings, the role of the dopamine reward system, and how emotional responses to restrictions can negatively impact your eating habits. Join me as I delve into the vital roles of insulin in metabolism, emphasizing its function in energy storage and fat suppression. Let's explore how lifestyle choices influence insulin levels and fat storage, including meal frequency, food composition, and timing. Discover strategies to manage insulin release through whole foods, avoiding artificial sweeteners, and optimizing activity around your natural circadian rhythm. This episode offers practical insights into balancing nutrition and exercise to improve metabolic health and achieve sustainable fat management. Key Takeaways Insulin's Dual Role: Insulin not only promotes energy storage but also suppresses fat release. Efficient management of insulin release can balance these processes. Impact of Eating Habits: Consuming complex carbohydrates and reducing meal frequency can lead to better insulin management by reducing constant insulin stimulation. Nutrient-Dense Meals: Focusing on meals that are nutrient-rich rather than calorie-dense helps in maintaining satiety and proper energy metabolism. Timing and Patterns: Aligning eating patterns with natural circadian rhythms helps in optimizing insulin sensitivity, especially by avoiding late-night snacking. In this engaging episode, I unravel the complexities surrounding metabolism, providing listeners with a fresh perspective on the common misconceptions of genetics and metabolism. As the debate over what truly slows down metabolism continues, I dive deep into the world of epigenetics, explaining how environmental factors and lifestyle choices impact gene expression and metabolic rates. With her insightful breakdown, Sherry challenges the notion that genetics predetermine our metabolic fate. Crash dieting emerges as a central theme, highlighting the detrimental effects such practices have on our metabolism. I discuss how cycles of extreme dieting can lead to significant degradation of lean body mass and consequently slow down our metabolic rate. Additionally, the role of inactivity, unresolved trauma, and sugar dependency in impeding metabolism are explored. I also mention the medical industry's influence on weight loss trends, cautioning listeners about the use of semaglutides like Ozempic and Wegovy. Throughout the episode, I stress the importance of rebuilding lean body mass for a healthy and active metabolism. Key Takeaways: Epigenetics reveals that genes are influenced by environmental factors, not solely responsible for our metabolic rate. Crash dieting can cause a loss of lean body mass, which is essential for maintaining a healthy metabolism. Inactivity and lifestyle choices heavily contribute to metabolic slowdown over time. The use of weight-loss drugs like Ozempic can lead to detrimental long-term effects and dependency. Building lean body mass is crucial for reversing metabolic slowdown. I further explain how our nervous system states influence our relationship with food, advocating for a balanced approach. I also delve deep into practical strategies to maintain a regulated nervous system, introducing listeners to techniques centered around breathwork and emotional intelligence. As an advocate for holistic well-being, I address current health trends such as the use of semiglutides for weight loss, stressing the importance of weighing the risks and conducting thorough research before opting for quick-fix solutions. The conversation is packed with insightful advice for women striving to achieve wellness for themselves and their families. Key Takeaways: Embrace intuitive eating by listening to your body's needs instead of following external dietary rules. Understand the role of your nervous system in regulating emotions and its impact on eating behaviors. Sherry shares her extensive journey in the health and fitness industry, debunking the popular myth that carbs are detrimental to weight loss. She explains how an obsession with cutting out carbs and other food groups can lead to unhealthy eating behaviors and long-term weight gain due to the buildup of a reward system in the brain. Sherry elaborates on the harmful effects of restrictive diets, such as the keto diet, which can sabotage both physical and mental well-being. She introduces listeners to the importance of transitioning from a scarcity mindset to an abundance mindset regarding food. By learning to reconnect with the body's natural cues and shifting the nervous system from protection mode to safety mode, individuals can enjoy their favorite foods like carbs while achieving their fitness goals. Sherry also touches on the significance of building an intuitive eating habit, highlighting her personal rituals and success stories from her clients to emphasize the practical implementation of her advice. Key Takeaways: Carbohydrates are a crucial energy resource and should not be entirely excluded from a diet aimed at weight loss. Shifting from a scarcity to an abundance mindset helps restore a healthy relationship with food and mitigates binge eating tendencies. Achieving an intuitive eating habit requires moving from the brain's protection mode to a safety mode, aligning with the body's natural hunger cues. In today's minisode, Sherry Shaban discusses the pervasive issue of nighttime snacking and how it undermines wellness goals. She reveals that contrary to popular belief, nighttime eating is often not a matter of weak willpower or lack of discipline. Instead, it is deeply rooted in our nervous system's response to stress and perceived threats. Sherry shares her personal struggle with nighttime snacking and provides insightful strategies for conquering this habit by addressing its underlying causes. Sherry explains the impact of our circadian rhythm on how our body metabolizes food after 7 or 8 PM, leading to increased fat storage and disrupted sleep. She emphasizes that addressing this habit requires moving beyond strict diet plans or accountability partners and instead focusing on regulating the nervous system. This process can align our body with a state of safety rather than protection, which in turn diminishes cravings and fosters healthier eating patterns. Key Takeaways: Understanding the Role of the Nervous System: Nighttime snacking is often driven by the nervous system, not a lack of discipline. Impact of Circadian Rhythm: Our body's ability to metabolize carbohydrates decreases after 7 or 8 PM, leading to fat storage and sleep disturbances. Role of Stress and Routine Changes: High stress levels and disrupted routines can trigger unwanted eating behaviors. Importance of Parasympathetic State: Shifting from a protection mode to a safety mode in the nervous system can eliminate cravings and promote healthier eating habits. Coaching for Long-Term Solutions: Personalized coaching can identify nervous system issues and provide strategies for permanent change. In this week's minisode, Sherry Shaban dives deep into the science of hormones and their impact on weight management, eating behaviors, and overall health. Do you need help to maintain motivation for your fitness goals? Do binge eating, emotional eating, or nighttime eating habits hinder your progress? Sherry addresses these issues by explaining how the body's hormones function and how you can work with your body rather than against it to overcome these challenges. Throughout the discussion, Sherry emphasizes the importance of managing hormones like insulin and cortisol. She explains how these hormones are crucial in fat storage, metabolism, and stress responses. By understanding the mechanics of these hormones, listeners can adopt strategies such as choosing complex carbohydrates, eating less frequently, and practicing non-purposeful exercise to manage insulin levels effectively. Additionally, Sherry highlights the significance of minimizing stress and promoting a sense of safety to reduce cortisol levels, thereby improving overall health and facilitating weight loss. Key Takeaways: Hormonal Influence on Weight Management: It's the hormones, not calories, that dictate how the body handles food. Manage insulin and cortisol for effective weight control. Insulin as a Storage Hormone: Insulin is crucial for transporting glucose and protein to tissues and is triggered by the presence of these nutrients in the bloodstream. Impact of Cortisol: High cortisol levels due to chronic stress can slow metabolism, increase fat storage around the midsection, and trigger cravings for high-energy foods. Strategies for Hormone Management: Choose complex carbs, eat less frequently, prefer whole foods over processed options, and avoid artificial sweeteners to manage insulin. Pattern Interrupt for Cortisol: Techniques like breath work, meditation, and other tools can help shift from protection mode to safety mode, reducing cortisol levels and promoting well-being Connect with Sherry Shaban: Book a Food Freedom Strategy Call: https://calendly.com/sherryshaban/makepeacewithfood Get Your Free Food Freedom Workbook: https://www.makepeacewithfood.com Join Make Peace With Food CommunEATy: http://ourcommuneaty.com Download HIIT Decks App Now!: http://www.hiitdecks.com Fall In Love With Fitness Podcast: http://www.fallinlovewithfitness.com YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/@sherryshabanfitness

In today's minisode, Sherry Shaban dives deep into the intricacies of how to effectively get your body to burn fat, focusing on the pivotal role of the nervous system in weight management. Sherry starts by addressing common misconceptions around diet trends such as low-carb and keto diets, offering insightful advice on how to navigate the overwhelming world of nutritional information. Sherry explains how emotions and the nervous system—specifically the sympathetic and parasympathetic states—affect the body's ability to burn fat. She introduces the concepts of "Protection Mode" and "Safety Mode," illustrating how stress and anxiety can trigger hormonal responses that hinder weight loss efforts. By understanding and managing the nervous system's responses, Sherry outlines a path toward achieving sustained weight loss and overall well-being. Key Takeaways: Importance of the Nervous System: Understanding how the autonomic nervous system, particularly the fight or flight and rest and digest states, impacts metabolism and fat storage. Protection vs. Safety Mode: Differentiating between protection mode, which increases cortisol and halts metabolism, and safety mode, which promotes relaxation and optimal fat burning. Emotional Impact on Weight Loss: The significant role of emotions in either aiding or hindering weight loss progress. In this Minisode, Sherry Shaban discusses food obsession, eating behavior, and the nervous system. The episode begins with Sherry's personal confrontation with her excessive concern over diet and nutritional choices, which evolved into a fear-driven preoccupation with food. This honest sharing of her own experiences serves to lay the groundwork for an engaging discussion on how our eating behaviors can become dysregulated. Sherry identifies food obsession as a universal yet often misunderstood challenge, intimately tied to our autonomic nervous system's state. She explains that the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems play critical roles in our eating habits, often acting as the unseen force behind behaviors like binge eating. In the protection mode, our bodies may conserve energy and prompt survival responses, such as cravings for high-energy food, further complicating our dietary patterns. The key takeaway from this conversation is the profound impact that chronic dieting and negative self-talk can have on perpetuating an unhealthy relationship with food. Sherry advocates for a shift from focusing on food control to understanding and nurturing the nervous system as a path toward healing and breaking the cycle of unwanted eating behaviors.
