When dietitians are offered a seat at the table of commodity boards, food brands, and non-profit associations, there are benefits for all involved - including the consumer. But what's the emotional price tag the dietitian must pay when partnerships are erroneously scrutinized for all the world to see? Is the discussion more nuanced than recent articles would you to believe? Cara Harbstreet, MS, RD, LD, and owner of Street Smart Nutrition, is a fierce advocate for fearlessly nourishing meals, and she uses a weight-inclusive approach in her work in private practice and nutrition communications. Working with many industry partners, Cara emphasizes that her primary goal as a registered dietitian is to share nutrition information and knowledge with as many people as possible.  Being able to go on farm tours and partake in other immersive agricultural experiences has allowed her to do just that - and to be well-versed in where our food comes from and how it's grown.  Through these experiences, Cara has built a network of industry and food science experts on whom she can rely for further insights as issues arise in our food system and mis and disinformation continue to proliferate on social media. While Cara emphasizes the potential for bias to increase when compensation is introduced to industry partnerships, she also notes that there is an inherent degree of bias in ALL partnerships, and that having a strong litmus test of who you're willing to go to the mat for and defend publicly should a partnership come under scrutiny can help guide dietitians in choosing industry and brand partners.  Moreover, Cara believes that there are many ways in which dietitians can make money and that they should be compensated for their work - regardless of the implicit media message suggesting that they should be limited in their career choices. As she often highlights processed foods in recipes and on social media, Cara points out that the degree of processing a food goes through is not an indicator of its health or nourishing value.  Listen in for her insights on how the role of processed foods has evolved over the past half century, and for her personal standards when it comes to grocery shopping. Part of growing is getting out of your comfort zone. Why leave the comfort of familiarity? How do we feel productivity when we are in a state of being uncomfortable? I was joined for episode 4 of the Connect, Change & Challenge podcast by Cara Harbstreet of Street Smart Nutrition.   I met Cara virtually a couple years ago and in person within in the past 12 months. It always makes me happy when someone I follow online exceeds my expectations once we meet in person. Cara is a dietitian by trade, and a student of life. She has a great approach to learning, always providing thoughts and ideas to her audience to bring us all along, so she was a great fit for this conversation. She also throws in some snark and sass so with that we can relate.1:06  CONNECT Cara reviews her professional hurdles and identified opportunities to go out on her own and create Street Smart Nutrition. She learned about the opportunities to challenge herself and her clients with bigger thinking. Cara talks about peoples' connection to food and their diet. I don't know about you, but I struggle with food decisions. I'm fortunate to be relatively health, but, of course, could do better. I love to cook, and I'm all in on full fat butter and cream. My theory of natural fats might be a little off on the nutrition spectrum. Also, if you tell me I can't have carbs, bread and pasta will takeover my thoughts and my productivity will decrease as I'm focused on pizza and sandwiches, not strategy. So, diets aren't my thing. This is another thing that attracted me to Cara's food philosophies focused on intuitive eating and health at every size. The combination of taking book smart ideas, with street smart real-life situations. 2:02  Cara's professional brand helps emulate her thinking on continuous learning and how things evolve. It's hard to be uncomfortable or to realize that the way you've been living or something that you've thought for a time may be wrong. None of us likes to admit that we might be wrong about something, or that we have treated someone poorly, even if not intentional. Cara discussed the importance of learning how to live in that uncomfortable state, and how to take something good from process. 8:38  Another topic that can make many of us uncomfortable is racism and diversity. This is an area where I personally want to grow. How can I do better? How can I be more inclusive? How can I design programs and initiatives in the workplace that show the brand or organization is open to people who look different, think different or even just approach problems in different ways? These are questions I'm asking myself right now. Cara talks about her personal journey around race as she identifies as bi-racial, so her experience is different from others, both people of color and Caucasians. She discusses her personal journey of exploring working with an anti-racism educator while having accountability and consistency. 11:13  CHANGE  I feel like being uncomfortable is often the first step to work toward change. Most everyone can say they have experienced stress in 2020. Whether personal, professional or most likely, both. That may mean balancing watching kids and helping with virtual learning while joining your third zoom call for the day. Or maybe hosting a virtual seminar and having your screen adapter come loose and the presenters get a white screen during the live event. I don't have kids so you can guess which one of those is from personal experience. All that being said, that's not the type of stress I am talking about. I'm talking about topics or issues that make you uncomfortable and maybe even add stress that you don't realize is there. Lately, there have been issues that have popped up where I've had to say I don't understand how or why that person feels the way they do. I need to take a step back and see if I can better understand to develop or check my own opinions on that issue. 14:08  That all being said, between the stress and the self questioning, these don't mean that asking yourself these questions equates to you being wrong with your feelings. It's just keeping yourself in check. I've also found that many times it actually strengthens my position on topics, but I now know why I feel that way, and also understand how someone else may feel differently. We can disagree and still respect each other. 15:52  Cara emphasizes the importance of working past the stress. The educator she has worked with is Monique Melton. One light bulb statement Cara learned from Monique was that you can't let anxiety be your barrier to continuing to work. This is something I found very impactful and a mantra that helps you live in the state of uncomfortable, and get to the point of change. 17:11  CHALLENGE  We always end every episode with the challenge, and Cara left us with two great thoughts. We talked about the need for accountability, but building your right accountability team--hose that will be supportive, but still help you push yourself forward. 20:17  Cara leaves us with advice from her professional experience. It's a loose thought exercise where you focus on trying to find out if your actions and behaviors are aligned with your values. Ask yourself, “what are your values?” Then, evaluate your actions and see if what you are doing is aligning with the values you have identified. The question is, “Are your values being reflected in your personal actions and your professional actions?” 22:39  The second is to take a step back and ask yourself what you want to learn. What are you really aspiring to do or learn? This is a great way to evaluate how you move forward and to keep yourself from being distracted. 24:58  I hope you tune in to listen to the full episode.  There were so many great thoughts in this episode it was hard to capture them all. Comment below if you have thoughts on any of the information shared, or the challenges we put forward.  If you want to follow Cara professionally, you can check her out online at streetsmartnutrition.com or on Instagram at streetsmart.rd. She posts great recipes, which not only taste good, but look good, funny memes and thought-provoking articles. “I shouldn’t eat this...I’m too fat to have this cupcake...I’m not a good parent because I bought this snack.” When was the last time you judged or criticized yourself about food?  National Nutrition Month is a great time to change the restrictive mentality we have around food and today’s guest will help you spend less energy  worrying about food. Cara Harbstreet is a Registered Dietitian Nutrition (RDN), focused on eating without restriction or fear. She’s authored an intuitive eating workbook to help people find food freedom and celebrate eating agin.  ara believes health at every size is pursuing healthful behaviors that can help us. Stop bullying yourself about food and buying into the chaotic eating space. If all else fails, celebrate with chocolate and smile! Key points Food shame: why we bully ourselves Food freedom: how do you relate to food and believe what your believe? It’s a very fluid and ongoing process. Health at every size: moving away from calories in and calories out, putting more of an individual emphasis on other factors. Food bullying offers a persona to restrictive mentality, which can lead to eating disorders. How you’re drawn in by “bright and shiny” objects of food labels Standards: put some blinders on and identify your own priorities, which can be determined by budged, time, and other preferences. The stress of trying to feed ourselves and making nutrition decisions, from calorie counting, macros, etc. Being more compassionate towards yourself; adapt and evolve your plans to what happens in the moment to be more flexible in getting through the day. The multi-billion business of dieting and supplements. Pendulum effect of restrictive eating and the associated cycle. Find a place you can sustain new found satisfaction around food. How restricting your food can lead to overeating. Identifying B.S. label claims such as super foods, detox foods, transparent food. The importance of transparent conversations with farmers and farmers to help people feel more comfortable with food production Tips to overcome food bullying: Take a step back to check-in with yourself, stay curious and skeptical, and grow your network.  Fabulous quotes “Shame is the most powerful master emotion. It’s the fear that we’re not good enough.” says Brene Brown. Food should never be about shame." “Don’t let one negative experience about food define your story.” “Health at every size means we’re pursuing the helpful behaviors." "If we feel that our food choices don’t uphold this ideal standard of how we “should” be eating, there is a harsh cycle of criticism and judgment, often from ourselves.” “Get more in tune of what’s going to look best for you in the long run.” “Eating is such a fun thing, but food can be incredibly stressful instead of celebration and connecting with other people. It can be contentious.” “We really don’t have to be so uptight and need to loosen up about food.” “Food is deeply, deeply personal.” Links Instagram, Twitter, Facebook: @streetsmartrd Website: www.streetsmartnutrition.com Food Bullying: How to Avoid Buying BS by Michele Payn Embrace Your Heart with Eliz Greene Food Bullying Podcast’s Facebook page

Thank a Farmer. We've heard it over the years and I've even joined in the movement myself over the past decade by writing a few articles asking for others to thank us – farmers, ranchers and the agriculture community for the food, fiber and fuel that is used every day. But is that really what we should be asking? This week on the podcast, Carrie Mess (a.k.a. Dairy Carrie) and I sit down for another Over A Beer episode to discuss. You can find all episode show notes here. Hey, I'm guilty of it. If you search my blog, you'll find an article as far back as 2009 asking the world to Thank A Farmer “for all of the hard work a small portion of Americans put forth to feed a growing world population.” But as we've matured in our advocacy efforts, I'd like to think we can realize there is a much more effective way of communicating that message. Carrie and I sit down over a beer to discuss how this campaign had every great intention when it began. There are absolutely appropriate times to ask people to Thank a Farmer. A really good example of this is a campaign like Culvers' Thank You Farmers. However, this has changed over the years with a bit of a self-seeking tone. Farmers aren't the only people who work hard. People don't want to be told they need to be educated. Carrie and I offer our solutions to raising awareness of those who work in agriculture. This has included the evolution of our own brands to correct course and connect with other people as a person rather than trying to be advocates armed with facts, figures and science to tell people they should support agriculture. We share how we've done this and how other advocates can as well. We share a few examples of people who are connecting are examples of doing this. This includes Cara Harbstreet, a registered dietitian from Kansas City (Instagram and Twitter). Let us know what you think about Thank A Farmer by chiming in on Twitter. This episode's Dear Food letter: Dear Food, We’ve had a complicated relationship for as long as I can remember. I have always felt guilty when eating you and blamed you for my oversized body (according to society's standards). My guilt and shame turned into a full fledged eating disorder, which I was entrenched in for years. I was diagnosed with anorexia in 2015 after years of restricting, over exercising, and hating myself. I finally agreed to get help from professionals, which meant having to eat a lot of you food. I was forced to eat what I considered my “bad” foods or “off limit” foods and refrain from exercise. It took years to restore my weight and countless appointments with my dietician, doctor, and therapist. It was and still is the hardest battle I have ever had to fight. Here I am now, in 2019, and still have a difficult time with you. I still overthink you and I worry that you will always have control over my life. But I have also come a long way in understanding our relationship and the distorted thoughts I have about you. I have recently felt a strong desire to fight against diet culture. You see food, I am about to enter the field of professional counseling and my hope is to help people understand you better and become less fearful of you. I want people to enjoy you and honor the body they live in, without being on a diet. I want that for myself and for others.  Though, as empowered as I feel, I am stuck. I have a hard time listening to people talk about you, diets, and weight. It makes me cringe and I don’t know how to address you in conversations in a respectful and knowledgeable manner. Unfortunately, the conversation of you and weight occur far too often. I usually just ignore what I am hearing and don’t get involved because I am scared of how others will react when I tell them I am on your side and that you are not the real problem. What do I say to them? How do I enter a conversation about you, body image, and scales when I am against the norm? How do we as Food Peace soldiers push back on diet culture on a daily basis? How do we respond to our family and friends when they sit and talk about you and restricting you? How do we help people understand that diets are so harmful to our bodies and that we deserve so much more? How do we help people see that Food Peace is possible and it does not include restriction or being on a diet?  I want so badly to tell the world that everything they have heard and learned about diets and you is a big lie. I want to help people find body acceptance and break free of the shame and guilt they feel around you, but I don’t know how. HELP!  Yours truly, Stuck and Fed Up. Cara Harbstreet, of StreetSmart Nutrition and a new startup, Libre Connections, joins me to talk business, investing in yourself, and mind mapping! (I had to look up what mind-mapping is, btw.) She's gone from being a new RD with a full-time job, to starting her private practice, to joining a startup incubator all in just a few years. She had an idea, and ran with it. Cue: Libre Connections.  We talk about successes and failures in business, starting something and learning along the way, and what happens when you invest in yourself (even if it's just a few bucks to get you started). Oh, and we talk about being sassy on Twitter (@StreetSmartRD).  Check out Cara's new podcast, You Can Eat With Us.  Other stuff: Have you left a review on iTunes yet? If not, please do! This week I’m chatting with anti-diet Registered Dietitian, Cara Harbstreet. Cara is the founder of Street Smart Nutrition. And although I have spoken to a number of non-diet RD’s in this second season of the podcast, I’m always surprised at how each of the conversations take such a different path. We talk about Cara’s experience with disordered eating and how she found her way to freedom. We also focus on: the prevalence of disordered eating in female athletes, the misleading marketing tactics – used by the diet industry – that mask diets/weight-loss, and how we can find an identity in dieting praying on our need to belong & be accepted. IN THIS EPISODE WE DISCUSS: Cara’s intuitive eating journey The difference between ‘disordered eating’ and an ‘eating disorder’ How elimination diets (like vegetarian or vegan) can mask disordered eating tendencies Her “cheeseburger phase” experiment The guilt she experienced upon starting her intuitive eating journey How being alone can exacerbate emotions when you are feeling triggered The importance of eating food that YOU personally find satiating Health = the controllable behaviors that we can actually influence The importance of our overall lifestyle & the behaviors we embody to our health Eating […] The post LPP #62 Finding Acceptance, Belonging & Connection Without Dieting with Cara Harbstreet appeared first on Liveng Proof.

RD Real Talk - Registered Dietitians Keeping it Real

This week I chat with Cara Harbstreet, of Street Smart Nutrition (street-smartnutrition.com). When we first met in real life, we connected over a mutual love of Oiselle and running. In this episode, we bond over a mutual distaste for the idea that dietitians don't eat french fries. In the nutrition news: The article that poses an odd question: is sugar or salt worse for you? The study that gives us an interesting insight into the many benefits of gut health, including a good night's rest The top cardiologist who is "blasting" nutrition guidelines, and why
