Eating disorders are complicated and not uncommon in artistic athletes. Common comorbidities of symptomatic joint hypermobility (SJH), like mast cell activation disorder (MCAD) or gastroparesis, may contribute to disordered eating, which can spiral into an eating disorder. For years, eating disorders have been stigmatized and dismissed by many in the health community. To discuss this difficult topic, Bendy Bodies sat down with Dr. Jennifer Gaudiani, MD, CEDS-S, FAED, and founder of the Gaudiani Clinic for Eating Disorders. Dr. Gaudiani shares how she became so passionate about caring for this complex population and the importance of understanding her patient's stories. She talks about why there's such a stigma around eating disorders and how she's working to change that. We discuss why this topic is so important for those with SJH and cover possible eating disorder mimickers. We break down definitions and explore possible predictors of eating disorders. Dr. Gaudiani shares the aspects of treatment that she has found vital, and offers tips on how to speak to someone you suspect may have an eating disorder. Finally, she reveals ways to find experts for getting the help needed for an eating disorder. Learn more about the Gaudiani Clinic here. You might be wondering what do we do in terminal cases of Anorexia. Terminal Anorexia is different than Severe and Enduring AN- where sufferers do often make a recovery after 20 years (research shows). Terminal AN is diagnosed when the sufferer will die from malnutrition within 6 months. This is an extremely small portion of AN sufferers that often falls through the cracks of dignified, whole person care. Dr. Gaudiani and I talk about how to cope and treat these cases in a way that centers autonomy, dignity and love for one's end of life. Jennifer L. Join the Recovery Collective by June 2nd EST: https://recoverycollective.mykajabi.com ABOUT THIS EPISODE Join Meg as she interviews Dr. Jennifer Gaudiani about why you are sick enough to seek treatment, and how medical professionals often unintentionally invalidate our eating disorders with outdated science and training, thin worship and medical fat phobia. Listen to hear Dr. G's advice on how to break free from the "I'm not sick enough" mindset. ABOUT OUR GUEST Dr. Gaudiani is an eating disorders expert physician and the Founder and Medical Director of the Gaudiani Clinic. Board Certified in Internal Medicine, she completed her undergraduate degree at Harvard, medical school at Boston University School of Medicine, and her internal medicine residency and chief residency at Yale. In 2008, she was one of the founding team members of the ACUTE Center for Eating Disorders at Denver Health. After seven great years there, she left as its Medical Director to pursue her vision of outpatient care, founding the Gaudiani Clinic. During her years at ACUTE, Dr. Gaudiani became a nationally recognized internist for her work on the medical complications of eating disorders. Dr. Gaudiani's book, Sick Enough: A Guide to the Medical Complications of Eating Disorders During the more than seven years that she's helped run the highest level of care in the country, providing definitive medical stabilization to critically ill patients with eating disorders, Dr. Gaudiani discovered that there are hardly any doctors who understand eating disorders. Even when people have a great mental health and nutritional outpatient team, they almost always lack a medical doctor in their community who has the expertise, time, and interest in providing superb care that motivates recovery and wellness. This may mean that patients have been seen by a physician who doesn't understand the nuances of an eating disorder, either from the emotional or the physical perspective. It may mean that eating disorder treatment professionals have no physician backup to support patients while they continue doing vital outpatient therapeutic work. It may mean that loved ones have not encountered a doctor who can provide families with the reassurance and expertise needed to diagnose, treat, and communicate clearly the medical complications associated with eating disorders. Dr. Jennifer Gaudiani wants patients to be safe as they continue outpatient therapy, clinicians to feel supported as they do that therapy, and families to be clear about what's going on medically. #110 - Jane was born and raised in London, in what can only be described as a very ‘normal' household, with four siblings, and a mum and dad, who quite simply, adored each other, and still do! There was always a pet of some kind in their household. Nothing remarkable happened, certainly no great traumas, yet, at the age of 11, Jane developed a serious eating disorder. It wasn't until age 35, that Jane got a handle on recovery, thanks in no small part, to the best dog to ever walk the planet – a beautiful, soulful, rescue bulldog named Crystal. That special dog taught Jane the true meaning of unconditional love and gave her the courage to join life again. The endless cycle of hospital admissions stopped, and for the last 15 years Jane has worked in the field of mental health and substance misuse, campaigning for better services, developing projects to challenge stigma, and educate people about mental illness. Jane is passionate about a fairer welfare system for low-income families, and she is currently employed by a wonderful organization which helps people access financial and emotional support, as well as practical services. Jane's main ‘love' in life, outside of her work, is and always has been, animals. She spends every moment of her spare time with her crazy greyhound, Daisy. Jane also enjoys reading, watching ‘rubbish' TV, and spending time with her family. Our society is sick. Diet culture, the beauty industry, and the media have sold us a narrowly defined ideal and it has warped our views on food, our bodies, and beauty. In this week's episode, I had the privilege of speaking with the incredible Dr. Jennifer Gaudiani all about the fallout of these warped cultural messages.Dr. Jennifer Gaudiani is an eating disorders expert physician and the Founder and Medical Director of the Gaudiani Clinic in Denver, Colorado. Dr. Gauidiani completed her undergraduate degree at Harvard, medical school at Boston University School of Medicine, and her internal medicine residency and chief residency at Yale. In 2008, she was one of the founding team members of the ACUTE Center for Eating Disorders at Denver Health and, after seven great years there, she left as its Medical Director to pursue her vision of outpatient care, founding the Gaudiani Clinic. During her years at ACUTE, Dr. Gaudiani became a nationally recognized internist for her work on the medical complications of eating disorders. She also wrote a book on this same topic, released in 2018, Sick Enough: A Guide to the Medical Complications of Eating Disorders.Dr. Gaudiani has lectured nationally and internationally and is widely published in the scientific literature as well as on blogs. She is one of the only outpatient internists in the US who carries the Certified Eating Disorder Specialist and Supervisor designation and has received the honorable designation of Fellow from the international organization Academy for Eating Disorders. In our time together, Dr. Gaudiani covers so many important topics, including the shocking percentage of people whom she believes have a disordered relationship with food, how diet culture has impacted the medical field, and how most doctors don't understand eating disorders. She also talks about thin privilege, weight stigma, weight-inclusive medical care, and what a balanced relationship with food and our bodies looks like. Dr. Gaudiani's wisdom and compassion are palpable in her work and in this episode. My hope is that her experience and insights might help us identify and shed the harmful messages we have absorbed, so we might move into a more peaceful relationship with food, our bodies, and ourselves.
Join Meg as she interviews Dr. About Dr. Jennifer Gaudiani: Dr. #102 - In this episode Linda Mazur, Jack Mazur, and Ellen Bennett discuss the insidious ways an eating disorder can begin and how complex they can become. Awareness and early intervention are critical. Everyone knows someone with an eating disorder. Eating disorder do not discriminate, they affect individuals of every age, gender, sexual orientation, ethnicity, race, and socioeconomic background. In the U.S. approximately 30 million people will have an eating disorder in their lifetime. At least one third are men. There is one death as a result of an eating disorder every 52 minutes. People who suffer with eating disorders feel immense shame. Eating disorders are underreported. Many people with eating disorders are not diagnosed and fly under the radar, and these cases are not reflected in the statistics. Let's listen and learn as they begin the conversations that need to happen because everyone's mental health matters. Our HostsLinda and John (Jack) Mazur wrote the book, Emilee-The Story of a Girl and Her Family Hijacked by Anorexia, https://www.amazon.com/Emilee-Story-Family-Hijacked-Anorexia/dp/170092012X to honor their daughter's wish, to raise awareness, evoke compassion, and foster change in how eating disorders are viewed and treated. In this episode, Nicola and Florence have a conversation with Dr Jennifer Gaudiani, known as Dr G, one of the few Internal Medicine Physicians who is also certified as an eating disorder expert, and the founder and Medical Director of the Gaudiani Clinic. The Gaudiani Clinic is a HAES (Health At Every Size)®-informed provider and embraces treating people of all shapes and sizes.Together, they talked about Dr G's unique approach to support ED patients with good science and social justice, instead of condescension and assumptiveness. Dr G talked about the "cave person brain" survival mechanisms our bodies put in place to save them from starvation, and the epidemic of false health information out there. She also clarified why extreme dieting can lead to low resting heart rates and how to recognize the difference between an athlete's heart and a starved heart.Dr G also reminded us that our bodies are not the problem, diet culture and thin privilege are. None of us should feel the need to change our bodies to fit a system rooted in privilege. And that, as such, we need to work to disrupt the system that identifies that only some bodies have privilege. Every body deserves abundant, satisfying, balanced foods according to taste and satisfaction, as well as treatment, self-compassion, self-care and body trust. "If someone is eating restrictively in the name of health, and realizes their periods are missing and bone density is low, they now have proof that what they're doing is not healthy for them. That whatever they're doing is not done in the name of health, but that they're in fact trapped into fear." - Dr Jennifer GaudianiDr. Gaudiani's first book, Sick Enough: A Guide to the Medical Complications of Eating Disorders, was released by Routledge in October 2018 and is available on Amazon. To work with Dr Gaudiani and her team, reach out to the Gaudiani Clinic. At the end, Florence mentioned a podcast about the Burnout book, please find it here.To find support in your HA recovery:Get the "No Period. Weight stigma is harmful to human health at all sizes. The medical community upholds weight stigma and harms the very people they should be helping by weighing patients without informed consent, blaming weight on non weight related concerns like earaches and wrist pain, and recommending weight loss based on the unscientific BMI measurement. Medicine must work from the inside out to eradicate the problems they have perpetuated. Dr. Jennifer Gaudiani author of the book Sick Enough has made weight inclusive medical care a priority at her Denver based telemedicine clinic and she shares her ideas for why doctors must act to eradicate weight stigma on this episode. --- About Dr Gaudiani Jennifer L. Dr. Jennifer Gaudiani returns to the show to discuss her new book Sick Enough: A Guide to the Medical Complications of Eating Disorders Dr. G shares helpful concepts that she uses throughout the book, such as the caveperson brain, our overall biological drive, and adaptation to keep us alive when we are struggling with disordered eating. “I’m not sick enough” is a statement that we hear with those that are struggling with disordered eating. We explore the beliefs around this statement in regards to seeking help with an eating disorder and caring for ourselves. The mind-body connection exists in us all, and we have to begin listening to emotions that are coming out in our physical body. The medical system silos body and soul and tends to want to get to the root of it vs the need for comfort and talking through things. We explore what needs to be changed in the healthcare system to prevent, diagnosis and treat disordered eating. So you know she is legit: Jennifer L. By day I am a doctor, by night I am getting my hands-on any outdoor adventure. Saw a gap in the care of the health of the female athlete. Found she was able to blend her experience with medical complication secondary to disorder and issues seen within athletic population specifically female athlete. Trying to change the culture of amenorrhea being a natural consequence. The loss of a menstrual cycle is a RED flag! For every year without a menstrual cycle, you can lose 2% bone density Debunks why birth control is not beneficial at protecting or rebuilding bone. Is this an athlete with a good strong heart or an athlete under fueling causing a “starved” heart? Feels there has been a great effort to get the word out on RED-S Under fueling in sport doesn’t just happen in females. Only 37% of physicians in a survey could identify the components of the female athlete triad. In any medical system many times you have to advocate for yourself. This weeks podcast is a conversation with Aimee Becker on recovery, connection, and advocacy Aimee Becker is the Chief Operating Officer of the Gaudiani Clinic. She spent 10 years dedicating herself to developing the infrastructure for Monte Nido & Affiliates. Inspired to join the field through her own recovery, Aimee joined Carolyn Costin when Monte Nido was only a six bed residential facility, as the Program Coordinator. Progressing to Director of Operations and then Chief Compliance Officer, Aimee oversaw Monte Nido & Affiliates' expansion into six states. In addition to her strong commitment to superb programmatic and operational functioning, Aimee developed a deep engagement with the therapeutic values and processes inherent to the world of eating disorder treatment. Through years of leading groups on gender and sexuality at Monte Nido, Aimee further developed her fundamental belief in client-centered goals, a narrative approach to therapy, and the idea that the person is not the problem, the problem is the problem. She is developing training on queer competency for eating disorder professionals, highlighting non-binary constructs of gender and sexuality and non-assumptive models of therapeutic engagement.
