Juni 2024 exklusiv sehen. Ob sich das lohnt? Sero und Johannes wissen mehr. Viel Spaß mit der neuen Folge vom Tele-Stammtisch! linktr.ee/CatchingUpOnCinema Kyle returns to Catching Up On Cinema after a month long absence to kickoff December 2021's, “Kyle's Cold Christmas” event month! All month long, we'll be reviewing frigid films to chill the bones. First up this month is our review of Xavier Gens', Cold Skin (2017)! Starring David Oakes, Ray Stevenson, and Aura Garrido (in full body creature makeup and prosthetics), the film is a horror tinged psycho drama concerning men waging a constant war of attrition with strange amphibious humanoids from the deep. Shot on location in on scenic beaches of the Canary Islands, the film is heavily allegorical in nature, with very explicit references being made to World War I, and The Divine Comedy. Deliberately repetitious in it's structure, the film suffers from a bit of an identity crisis, mostly failing to comfortably settle into a rhythm or tone, resulting in either a heady character study interrupted by action beats, or a rather tame horror film weighed down by frequent lulls in the action. Not at all lacking in creativity or enthusiasm, the film plays host to many interesting ideas and allegories, but ultimately fails to engage due to it's inconsistent pace and tone, coupled with a less than satisfying conclusion. Before we get into reviewing the not quite Lovecraftian Cold Skin, we've got some real eldritch horrors to discuss. Cut rate Corman clone Charles Band - yeah, him - is producing a sequel to From Beyond called Miskatonic U: The Resonator and there are behind the scenes photos to feast your eyes upon if you're into that type of thing. We're not really, which is probably why we ultimately diverge into a conversation on which Fantastic Four film is the worst and how Kang the Conquerer fits into the MCU. Skip ahead to about 28:45 if you'd rather not hear about the latest venture from the producer of Corona Zombies and would rather hear about this rather tepid adaptation from New French Extremity director Xavier Gens. Including aquatic creatures that mate with humans does not make the film Lovecraftian, nor does an opening Nietzsche quote make it meditative, but even if Cold Skin is ultimately forgettable, the viewing experience was certainly not regrettable.  Visit IndieWire to read Dave Ehrlich's review in full.

Can it be horror without a supernatural element? This is a booktube, horrortube and Canadian crossover! Amy is in the midst of PhD studies and when we get together, watch out! It’s the very 12th episode of Forsaken Cinema Podcast!! So here’s the deal. We recorded this the weekend before our little hiatus and were originally gonna scrap it due to some audio issues (issues = Melissa leaving a window open whilst we recorded allowing for super annoying bird sounds throughout the entire recently released movie portion) but in light of not putting anything out in 2 weeks, and the fact that Re-Animator is one of our faves, we’re gonna release it as a bonus this week. SO ignore any mentions of the movie “Get In” (spoiler: the movie is TRASH and you’re really not missing out). SO enjoy a fun intro and a fun conversation about Stuart Gordon’s crowning achievement.------------------------------Also discussed:“Haunt” (2019)“Channel Zero” (series 2016-2018)“Cold Skin” (2017)“Monstrum” (2018)-----------------------Please please please!! We take a look at Robert Eggers’s latest THE LIGHTHOUSE which stars Willem Dafoe and Robert Pattinson as a couple of salty sea dogs tending a secluded lighthouse in what might just be the Twilight Zone. It’s a beautifully photographed black-and-white film shot with vintage lenses with careful attention paid to period details not just in the set dressing and wardrobe, but with the dialects and even the mannerisms. Dafoe and Pattinson deliver amazing performances and the mood and sense of dread are as thick as the New England fog, but do all those things add up to an excellent film? Join us for a discussion about why this film worked or didn’t, and why it’s bad luck to mess with a seagull.SPOILER WARNING: This episode contains MAJOR SPOILERS which means important story details will be revealed. Talk Horror To Me

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 29, 2019 64:37

Going into this episode, neither Mr. Bean or I had seen Assault on Precinct 13.  From all indications, it wouldn't be much of a horror movie per se, but it seemed to me that it had the potential to be a touchstone to refer back to as we continue this exploration of the genre that Talk Horror To Me was always intended to be, and that we've now got the reps in to continue in an increasingly satisfying way.  While not John Carpenter's first completed film, it was his first Hollywood release, which meant I was doing myself a disservice by leaving that hole in my picture of genre history.  Few people of that late analog era (the time just before computer technology changed not only how films are made and distributed, but ultimately experienced as mass communication in the hands of the individual would change all aspects of the human experience) have had the impact on the genre like John Carpenter has, and while this particular film is one of his less highly profiled movies these decades later, I was hoping it would shed some light on the things to come.   Hopefully this conversation does some little bit to relay the enthusiasm with which we tested this concept, because we were quite pleased with what we found.  Not only does Assault already begin to portray various writing and directorial elements that John Carpenter would refine and in many ways perfect as his filmography grew, but it provides an excellent example of the "siege narrative" story.  There's something intrinsically compelling about a scenario involving relatable characters attempting to survive in a confined environment, with only the materials around them, materials the viewers themselves can see.  Perhaps there's something existential to the theme, or perhaps it's just fun to participate with the storytellers themselves, because by limiting the working space for our potential survivors, we as viewers can relate with some immediacy to the choices that they make, because of the restricted nature of their plight. Whether it's a gang of outlaws on horses in the old American West, or a zombie outbreak (Night Of The Living Dead).  Deadites surrounding a remote cabin (Evil Dead), or fish folk assaulting a remote lighthouse (Cold Skin), it's a tried and true narrative that when done well, can still captivate, and revisiting this pivotal example of the structure was enlightening and enjoyable.  We hope you think so too.   Cheers! There was a bit of division between us concerning this film, as Matt didn't enjoy it nearly as much as I did.  To be sure, Errementari: The Blacksmith and the Devil, the first feature length film by Spanish director Paul Urkijo Alijo is less an adults horror film and more a hybrid of dark fantasy and morality play, based on regional folklore and falling into line with stories more like those found collected by the Brothers Grimm than those told by George Romero or John Carpenter.  In my defense of the film, as you will hear in the episode, I think it has several things going for it that will lead a segment of the horror audience to appreciate it.  Beautiful staging, lighting, costumes and practical effects.  While there are elements of it that lends it more to a young audience (the films primary protagonist is a young girl struggling with the loss of her mother to suicide, and the ramifications that has in a small 19th century Christian community) some of the sets have art direction reminiscent of another Spanish and French co-production from the same year Cold Skin, which we covered enthusiastically in episode 18. If you like lighter fare in terms of storytelling, or you like classical European religious iconography, I contend this is a film that may not have come across your radar that is well worth your time.  If you like those dark children's movies of the 80s, the ones with a decidedly Hensonian flair like the Dark Crystal or Labyrinth, I think this movie is certainly worth your time.  Perhaps Errementari doesn't plant it's foot firmly enough in one genre to have widespread appeal for a contemporary American audience, but having seen it twice, I thoroughly enjoy it, and I hope at least a few of you might find it as charming and entertaining as I have. If not, I trust Matt will be happy to gripe about it with you on social media!  There's always that, and you can do so at one of the links below.   Cheers! -Shonny Constant 5. 12. 2019    Talk Horror To Me Facebook Group   Twitter      @Talk_horror @ShonnyConstant   Instagram @TalkHorrorShow @HobbyKnockout @Shonny.Constant   Our Talk Horror cover design is by artist and friend Crystal Mielcarek.  More of her work can be found on Instagram @Smushbox

Cold Skin is a newer release on Shudder, a 2017 movie that caught my eye with it's preview showing a bleak lighthouse environment, remote and in the past.  I like this set up for a movie, because if it's done well, I feel like I'm being immersed into a story and a fantastical place.  In the case of Cold Skin, Matt and I both agree that the movie delivers in both areas, with a great setting, an interesting enemy, and some depth to what we're supposed to interpret that doesn't (for us at least) dip too far off of a fun and compelling story.   Gruner especially, with his semi-malicious nature and far flung sensibilities, is a fun character to follow.  A convincingly paranoid but invaluable partner when it comes to surviving the environment, I'd place him in the lineage of Quint from Jaws.   We'd love to hear your opinions of Cold Skin!  Find us at one of the links below and tell us what you thought of it.   Cheers! -Shonny Constant 2. 21. 2019    Talk Horror To Me Facebook Group   Twitter      @Talk_horror @ShonnyConstant   Instagram @TalkHorrorShow @HobbyKnockout @Shonny.Constant

Now drunk and besotten, Sparrow trades in his magical compass for a bottle of rum, setting off a cataclysmic series of events.  Feeling more like a true follow up to the original Pirates trilogy than the fourth film, it also feels a bit tired. Many action scenes end a bit too soon and emotional scenes strive to have a weight that's unearned. Despite this, there are zombie sharks and a ridiculous credit cookie. Mat discusses the recent Arnold Schwarzenegger drama Aftermath based on a disturbing true story of a man getting revenge on an air traffic controller after his wife dies in a mid-air airplane collision. Eric enjoys a collection of the family saga comic strip Gasoline Alley. The second film is BIRD BOX from director Susanne Bier, featuring a woman struggling with becoming a mother when the apocalypse strikes.  Doc Rotten and Vanessa Thompson from Horror News Radio along with Jeff Mohr from Decades of Horror: The Classic Era share their thoughts about this week's awesome collection of streaming horror films. Gruesome Magazine Podcast - Episode 050 BIRD BOX - COLD SKIN COLD SKIN In 1914, a young man arrives at a remote island near the Antarctic Circle to take the post of weather observer only to find himself trapped in a watchtower besieged by deadly creatures which live in hiding on the island. "[Cold Skin] felt so much like a good turn of the century novel. You have the protagonist as the narrator of his own sort of memoir and it has that kind of Lovecraft, Edgar Allan Poe feel." - Vanessa "[Cold Skin] raises a lot of issues about how we treat others who are different from us.." - Jeff "There were moments in [Cold Skin] I thought were really strong. Most of them involve 'Friend' and the creatures when he is learning about them or becoming close to them." - Doc Director: Xavier Gens Cast: Ray Stevenson, David Oakes, Aura Garrido Release: Currently Available on Shudder. BIRD BOX Five years after an ominous unseen presence drives most of society to suicide, a mother and her two children make a desperate bid to reach safety. "I really enjoyed the story. I enjoyed the way the different characters play against each other. There are a couple of things that I was, ‘Eh,’ but overall, I have to say I’m on the side of the people that really enjoyed the movie." - Vanessa "[Bird Box] has a substantial amount of depth to it … I really enjoy her (Sandra Bullock's character) story arc. I really dig this movie." - Rafe "I thought it was the story of Mallory’s evolution (Sandra Bullock’s character) . I’ll admit it. I cried at the end." - Jeff "The cast is phenomenal!" - Doc Director: Susanne Bier Cast: Sandra Bullock, Trevatne Rhodes, John Malkovich, Sarah Paulson, Jacki Weaver Release: Currently Available on NETFLIX

Welcome the newest episode of Dark Discussions, your place for the discussion of horror film, fiction, and all that’s fantastic. In the early 2000’s, the French extreme movement turned the independent horror world upside down. Some of the most popular films of the era were MARTYRS, INSIDE, HIGH TENSION, and Xavier Gens FRONTIER(S). But now, years later, the talent behind these films have moved onto other subgenres including COLD SKIN (2018), a period piece film, that Xavier Gens has adapted from successful novel by Albert Sanchez Pinol. In 1914, a young man sails to a remote South Atlantic island as a weatherman; someone to chart the conditions of the isolated British territory. The only other resident is a lighthouse keeper named Gruner. Gruner explains the prior weatherman passed from typhus leaving him alone for many months. As Friend sets about his work, the second night of his one year term, his cabin is attacked by something extraordinary from the sea. Fleeing, he holes up with Gruner in the lighthouse only to find out the threat may be unending. Receiving strong reviews from the festival circuit, the US distribution to the film was picked up by Samuel Goldwyn Films. Unlike his prior films, COLD SKIN is a new direction for Xavier Gens. Though dark, it seems quite unique for his filmography. Dark Discussions takes a look at this new movie and discuss not only the movie but the film trajectory for Gens himself. Greetings, and welcome back to Horror Business. We have one awesome episode in store for you guys. On this episode we’re discussing 1971’s Let’s Scare Jessica To Death and 1990’s Henry: Portrait Of A Serial Killer. First and foremost we want to give a shoutout to our sponsors over at Lehigh Valley Apparel Creations, the premiere screen-printing company of the Lehigh Valley. Chris Reject and his merry band of miscreants are ready to work with you to bring to life your vision of a t-shirt for your business, band, project, or whatever else it is you need represented by a shirt, sweater, pin, or coozy. Head on over to www.xlvacx.com to check them out. Also, thank you to our Patreon subscribers. Your support means the world to us and we are eternally grateful for that support. Thanks! We start by talking about what we’ve seen or done lately in the field of horror. Liam briefly talks about seeing the Netflix original film Apostle and attending the annual Exhumed Films 24 Hour Horrorthon, and seeing the film Great White aka The Last Shark and Fade To Black. Justin talks about seeing the films Terrifier, Cold Skin, Still/Born, and Slender Man and starting the final season of the TV series Penny Dreadful. First up is 1971’s Let’s Scare Jessica To Death. We begin by talking about the quasi-underrated nature of the film and giving a brief outline of the film. We touch upon the strange and misleading nature of the title and how the film never quite reveals as to whether or not what we’re seeing on screen is real. We talk about the way mental illness is depicted in the film and the possible symbolism of other characters in the film that aren’t Jessica. The concept of an environment being hostile to outsiders is touched upon. Up next is 1990’s Henry: Portrait Of A Serial Killer. Liam talks about how he first encountered the film, and how it is essentially the “anti-80s horror film” and how it didn’t hold up upon a second viewing. We talk about the almost unnecessary cruelty of the film at times and how the excessive violence comes off as just that: excessive. There is a brief discussion on the abandonment of supernatural themes in the early 90s and the rise of the splatterpunk movement. The “nobilization” of Henry and how the film flirts with sympathizing with him is discussed; as is how this is a shortcoming on the part of the filmmakers for waffling on the nature of Henry i.e. is he evil or just misunderstood? The conflation of “intense and violent” with “good and scary” is discussed. As always thanks to everyone and anyone who donated on Patreon, checked this episode out, or shared a tweet/shared a post on FB/gave us love by recommending us to someone. We love you forever for listening. Any questions, comments, suggestions for movies and guests, or if you yourself want to join us for a movie viewing or even an episode, can be sent to thehorrorbiz@gmail.com.
