MARK SUTHERLAND Following a phone call in 1992, Mark found himself taking responsibility for the production design and the construction of the sets of a low budget film, “White Angel”. The film is referenced in the industry respected Guerrilla Film Makers Handbook. “White Angel” was distributed in 35 cinemas including the West End of London. He contributed to the 2009 BBC Children's Festival, and has used his carpentry skills to work on a number of TV shows including ‘Strictly Come Dancing' and the opening ceremony of the London 2012 Olympics. Mark has latterly produced/co-produced a number of short films, notably “Pukka” written by the late Mark Straker in which Mark combined his film-making skills with his background in secondary education by employing film-making to teach English and Maths to young people through set design and construction. “Pukka” consequently won the Community Award at the 2004 Notting Hill Film Festival. Mark then co-produced “One of Us”, also written by Mark Straker, and this subsequently won the award for Best Drama at the Los Angeles Hollywood VSM [Very Short Movie] Film Festival, and Best Actor at the 2007 BFM [Black Film Makers] Festival. In 2009 Mark designed, built the set, and art directed the film “Jerome's Weakness” which was directed by Mathew McGuchan. In 2010 Mark was Co-Producer and Production Designer for the BBC2 feature film “SUS”, an adaption of Barrie Keeffe's classic play that starred Clint Dyer screened. In 2011 Mark shared the Production Design Credit for “Rahab”, a short film directed by Rob McLellan, starring David Oyelowo. Mark was also the Construction Manager responsible for the set construction. Mark teamed up again with Rob McLellan, writer/director, in 2013 to co-produce the multiple award winning short film, “ABE”, which went viral upon its internet release and was optioned by MGM to be developed as a full feature film. “ABE” also attracted interest from Sony Pictures and had a huge film festival run around the world. Mark had three productions in the 2014 London Sci-Fi Film Festival. Teaming up with Hughie Philips of Mind's Eye, Mark produced “Always the Sun”, directed by Rob McLellan. “Always the Sun” made it into the top 10 selection, along with another wonderful Sci-Fi short, “Mouse X”, directed by Justin Tagg, that Mark built the set for. ‘ABE' also screened at the Festival. Mark regularly appears on the Christian network Revelation TV “Politics Today” programme and is lauded as a valued and widely followed commentator on American culture and politics from both sides of the Atlantic. Mark produced “Between Lambs and Lions”, a political thriller set in a dystopian future where the American constitution is null and void and the Star Spangled Banner assigned to a museum. “Between Lambs and Lions” was directed and written by Ted Wilkes of Bottle Rocket Films and starred Paterson Joseph and Finbar Lynch. Producing “Between Lambs and Lions” has led to Mark having broadcasting opportunities in America. Mark cares passionately about what goes on in America and he contributes regularly to over twenty-five independent channels. Mark also made a documentary called “Flexcit the Movie”, the definitive guide to the UK leaving the EU. It was based on a lecture given by Richard North and Christopher Booker who wrote “The History of Europe” and “The Great Deception”. Mark produced his latest project, “The Iris Echo”, which has featured in film festivals in Florida, Maryland, Dublin, the Cannes Market Place and Derby in the UK. “The Iris Echo” is a drama depicting the corruption of communism which is particularly pertinent in today's political climate of Cultural Marxism that uses film to make people think and is what motivates Mark to produce films. Later in 2020 Mark will be contributing as the London commentator to a current news-based programme observing End Times Scriptural prophecy which will be airing on the JUL TV network.com out of California. Mark has recently had speaking engagements in the US at the “This West is Our West” gathering in Montana, “Therefore Go” in Ohio, and “Here the Watchmen Orange County” in California. Also, the “American Celebration Tour” by StopHate.com in Tennessee. Mark is collaborating with Stop Hate Media Studios in Dallas to produce a video pod cast series that will include his very own “The Sutherland Report”. Mark has secured an author contract with an international publisher for his forthcoming book that compares Brexit with the 2016 Presidential election of Donald J Trump. This Podcast Is Episode Number 419, And It's About Becoming A Better Construction Manager By Developing Accountability The success of any business, large or small, depends considerably on nurturing an efficient, productive workplace.   While improving employee productivity should always be a priority when the ultimate goal is a sustainable and profitable business, the process is easier said than done.   Being a better construction business owner is not just about the habits you practice in front of others. It is often about the habits you practice behind closed doors that make you an easy person to follow.   Whether you work alone or managing a group of people, practicing accountability matters. Accountability is a touchy subject that can make many people feel uncomfortable, but it protects you as a leader and can exponentially increase the level of influence you have over a corporation or group of followers.    Here are a few ways you can develop the kind of accountability that makes you a better construction manager. Set clear expectations for yourself As a business owner, you need to have a clear set of expectations of what you will do and what you will never do. This can go for your personal life as well as your professional life. If you are going to be an accountable person, you need to know what you are responsible for in no uncertain terms. Establish an accountability partner Establishing an accountability partner is as simple as finding a person you trust, telling them the expectations you have placed on yourself, and asking them to follow up with you regularly to ensure you haven't lowered your standards. In finance, it is imperative to have someone you are accountable to.  Countless construction companies each year get in legal trouble for laundering funds or evading taxes; when you are the project manager and provided with access to company finances, make sure there is someone within your organization that goes behind you to check invoices and balances, this could save you a massive headache in the long run. Establish a board of directors (or an accountability group) Depending on the size of your business, your board of directors could be employees that are on the payroll, or it could be friends and family members that volunteer as advisers.  Your board of directors needs to have at least a moderate amount of business sense, and they need to be easy to reach in crisis. Should you ever find yourself in the position of making a big decision quickly, you will need to access your board of directors to either obtain their permission to act or discuss alternative courses of action. An accountability group can help you strategize for future growth and set goals that move your business forward. Most importantly, checking in with other people regularly to report on your progress makes it much more likely that you'll take action and get things done. Allow the people you lead to question you Allowing employees to question your methods does not mean you are allowing them to question your authority. If you have an employee that is feeling uncertain about a leadership practice or division in your company, you should establish an open-door policy and allow them to ask difficult questions.  It is okay for specific issues to remain private, but use your best judgment to determine how to respond to their questions and be as open and honest as possible. Hold yourself to the same standard you hold others to As a business owner, you likely invest in a particular security or monitoring service. It is essential that you adhere to the same policies and procedures others are expected to.  Suppose your building has a strict internet security policy; set your work computer up with the same internet permissions as others. If you regularly monitor employee chats, make your conversations public record. Anything that needs to be discussed privately should be consulted on paper or in-person to avoid legal trouble and confusion.  Final thoughts As intimidating as developing accountability looks from the outside, it is a precious asset that no business manager can afford to be without.  Accountability can protect you from legal backlash and disgruntled employees. When you make an effort to be the same leader behind closed doors as you are in front of those you are leading, they will know you are a trustworthy person who is worth following. It’s been just under two months since Coach Andy Avalos was hired as Boise State’s Football coach. Within that timeframe he’s hired new staff and added players. What does the future of BSU Football look like? What direction is Coach Avalos looking to take the team? Get to know Coach Avalos better through this episode as he answers these questions and others. During his tenure as a linebacker at Boise State, he amassed 365 tackles, which was fourth all-time in Boise State history. He also led Boise State in tackles every year from 2002–2004. He was named first-team All-Western Athletic Conference honors in 2003 and 2004. In 2016, he was listed in the top 30 players in Boise State history since Boise State installed their famous blue turf in 1986. Avalos had a 92-yard interception return for a touchdown in the 2004 Liberty Bowl. Andy went on to work at schools including his alma mater Boise State and Oregon as an assistant before returning to Boise State to become their head football coach. Also joining us in this podcast is Korey Hall, former NFL fullback and Boise State Bronco. Korey also went on to win Super Bowl XLV with the team over the Pittsburgh Steelers. That love for building and a degree in Construction Management led him to managing large capital projects as a Construction Manager and then, in 2015, setting out on his own with his wife, Jasmine, to start Graves Construction. Offensive rebounding is often a silent skill that can be overlooked. But when a player finds continued success with it, it's noticeable. Jaycie Casebolt, after grabbing four rebounds and scoring nine points in the season opener against Delta, has found similar success. In Thursday's loss to Coal Ridge she scored 12 points — a team-high. Casebolt is one of four seniors on the 2021 team. Coach Steve Skiff says that Jaycie has an outstanding knowledge about finding the ball.  Casebolt helped the Indians take a 20-17 lead into the half on Thursday. She added two steals and an assist in the Delta loss, and was a near perfect 4 for 5 from the field. The Rotary Amphitheater project was approved during the last City Council meeting. The city awarded $3.2 million of budgeted funds for construction of an amphitheater at Cerise Park. This project included the award of a contract with Stryker and Company, who will serve as the Construction Manager and the General Contractor. It will feature a stage, a recessed viewing area, a sound booth, restrooms, additional parking, a back access road to the stage area and designated spaces for vendors and merchandise. According to the community impact report, uses for the amphitheater could include music, theater, festivals, non-profit events and other events like movies or workout classes. The stage would be about the same size as the stage in the Montrose Pavilion. With a stage that big, there is potential to host bigger acts and shows, regional orchestras and symphonies.  Public Works Manager Jim Scheid said that the priority and challenge of the construction project was to create as little environmental impact as possible. Public comments advocated for further review of the environmental measures set in place for the project. There were concerns about negative environmental impacts on the ecological system in Cerise Park. Plans for breaking ground for the amphitheater are set to start by March 1st, and the amphitheater is scheduled for total completion by November 1st. And before we go,  The Montrose County School District announced last week that after a routine inspection, possible asbestos debris was found in the middle school ceiling at Olathe Middle and High School.  The district shared the discovery of asbestos during the BEST grant application process. The BEST grant would allow the district to use funds to further improve its security systems district-wide, something the community expressed as a goal several years ago. MCSD Superintendent Carrie Stephenson said that anytime we have the opportunity to access additional funds to improve our safety and security measures, we will continue to do so. MCSD and the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment are collaborating to identify mitigation strategies based on state regulations as they determine next steps. Stephenson said the timeline is not known currently as they continue the investigation, which includes having the qualified people come inspect the campuses. That process has already begun. She added that the district's COVID-19 conditions are getting to a place where they can consider welcoming all students back in-person. It's another reason why the district is taking immediate action to address the asbestos situation to avoid delaying that return. That's all for today, thank you for listening! When he came back to reality, Rory knew he would have to work hard to build up a sustainable portfolio that would provide enough passive income for him to work for himself on his own terms and travel at will. He found that short-term rentals provided him the greatest cash-flow, so he began building a portfolio. However, this path has not been passive and Rory is still working toward his goal of more passive income. Once you've brainstormed all your content, it's time to get down to brass tax. There are 3 things I'm always mindful of when it's time to write. 1. Never start from scratch In most cases, no matter what job you want there's always a reference you can look to. At the very least, there are people who work at that company in that role you can look to as an example. So instead of trying to come up with your resume yourself, take time to understand The Job description and everything they're looking for (Read it until you know it by heart) The general standard for resumes in that industry. You can find this through a quick Job Hero search. And how REAL HIRES are talking about their role. You can easily find all of this info by searching on Google and spying on people's Linkedin pages. I love using the 3rd tactic bc it shows you what a successful example looks like. Once you have that, you know how to talk about your role and what to emphasize. You'll also start identifying key themes across all those different sources in terms of vocabulary, key responsibilities, and required skills. 2. The bullet formula is your foundation From there, you can move on to actually crafting the Bullet. Start with a very strong action verb that captures the essence of your role. Then describe the core of what you did/how you did, then quantify. Simple. If you're stumped on what words to actually use, check out this list of 180 powerful action verbs broken down by project type. I've been using this as a resource for years and I still love it. 3. Quantify EVERYTHING Then when it comes down to Quantification, this is where most people check out. They always forget to quantify. The two biggest reasons are: They don't remember the exact impact they achieved They don't know how to actually get to a number If you don't remember the impact you achieved. ITS OK TO ESTIMATE. Don't kill yourself about it lol. What's important is that the ESTIMATE is REASONABLE. It should fall within some standard deviation where you don't feel like you're BSing when you're giving it out. As long as it's reasonable, you're good. Feel free to round up or down on a case by case basis. To get to the number, you really just have to go through a funnel. Start at the most macro level and continually refine until you get to the number you need. Anytime you say you did something, you should ask yourself: How much? How many? What was the before and after? Start with what you know, and then make logical assumptions for what you don't know. It will feel like a brain teaser exercise, but that's normal. It's all a part of the process. But this is pretty much it when it comes to the actual writing of the resume. Keep those 3 secrets in your back pocket and you'll rise above the rest. EP 24: THE DONUT SHACK: Defining Your Passion & Pivoting to Success with Nicole Vivieros   In this episode I had a conversation with my friend Nicole about her new venture, The Donut Shack. Being a baker was something Nicole had been super passionate about for over 7 years. She had started small back in 2013 and was distracted by LIFE!   She put her baking dreams on hold and shifted her multi-passionate entrepreneur ideas to wanting to create retreats. She ultimately wanted to create an Adult Girl Scout experience and create delicious confections for her troops.   Nevertheless she kept finding herself further away from her original passion of creating food for people. As life went on Nicole discovered that she had a diary allergy and couldn't eat certain foods especially donuts. She then came up with the idea of creating a donut that is 100% Vegan, Dairy Free, Nut Free.   BUT…It gets better, Nicole isn't an ordinary baker she is also a Construction Manager! Nicole knew she always wanted to do something with baking, but she is using her current full-time role to help make the side hustle the real deals.   In this episode you can hear the following takeaways: All it takes is 20 seconds of courage: most things we find to be uncomfortable, confusing or even awkward will pass. Take a dive a something your gut is telling you to do is the first step to getting to where you want to go. Make a list: Look at all the things you love to do and write them down. You're going to always looks for ways to help your business grow and pivot Don't give up on your failures: Mis-steps and failures are intended for us to grow and be able to learn from them. The period where we feel that we failed miserably are moments of success in learn how to be the best version of what you need to do. Consistency: This probably the most important of them all. You want to make sure everything you set out to do you do it consistently and don't stop All the Feels: When you're so excited you think you might throw up, that when your energy, time and hard work has paid and you're actually doing what it is you are meant to be doing.     ABOUT NICOLE VIVIEROS Currently I'm a construction project manager, who has been making carrot cake for nearly two decades as Xmas gifts. The Society of American Military Engineers (SAME) Denver Post and Philadelphia Post along with the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) are hosting a series of webinars based on talks given at recent Design and Construction Issues at Hazardous Waste Sites (DCHWS) Symposiums. The mission of the DCHWS symposiums is to facilitate an interactive engagement between professionals from government and the private sector related to relevant and topical issues affecting applications of engineering and science associated with cleaning up hazardous waste sites. The symposiums also serve as a platform to facilitate the exchange of information, encourage dialogue, share experiences, and build and enhance communication among design and construction professionals. This presentation will discuss the Superfund Job Training Initiative (JTI) implementation as part of the remedial action at the Fairfax Street Wood Treating Site in Jacksonville, Florida. The Superfund JTI program is a job readiness and training program that targets areas and citizens that are affected by Superfund sites and tries to involve underemployment or unemployed community members in the Superfund process thru training and potential employment. The process includes participation of community partners in the area to assist in getting the word out for the opportunity, candidates are screened by an evaluation panel (typically including EPA, EPA RA Contractor, Constructor, and local leaders), and then selected to be part of the training program. Upon completing he training program, the graduates are then eligible to be interviewed with the potential to be hired by the RA Constructor. Lessons learned from all stages of the RA implementation (initiation, procurement, planning, communication, and field execution (subcontractor hiring process) will be highlighted in the webinars. Specifically the presentation will discuss identifying certain expectations and objectives of the client, incorporating those objectives of Superfund JTI program into bid documents and developing appropriate subcontractor selection criteria, establishing strong communication and co-operation with the RA subcontractor, synchronizing construction schedule with the Superfund JTI program training schedule, improving screening and assessment processes for the potential candidates selected for the program, recognizing in advance the challenges presented by the candidates limited skill sets and experience as it pertains to the site specific construction needs, and developing creative alternatives, solutions, and/or opportunities for the graduates with their involvement in the RA activities. Korey grew up on a small farm and ranch in Glenns Ferry, ID. His success was a result of a great family, great friends and the support of a close knit community. After graduating high school, he attended Boise State University. Korey graduated with a degree in Construction Management while also starting four years as an inside linebacker for the Broncos. He finished his collegiate career with a win over Oklahoma in the 2007 Fiesta Bowl, one of the greatest college football games ever played. He went on to play four years with the Green Bay Packers and started at fullback in the 2011 Super Bowl win over the Pittsburgh Steelers. He finished his last season in the NFL with the New Orleans Saints. One of the biggest benefits of this experience was the intangible value of being part of great teams and understanding what’s possible when individuals come together and create something greater than themselves. The same holds true for business, people don’t follow companies, they follow great leaders. Korey started his career in the construction industry with Engineered Structures Inc. where he was a Project Engineer on multiple commercial and medical related jobs. He later moved on as a Project Manager and contributed to projects such as City Center Plaza, Boise Centre Expansion and the Boise State University Fine Arts building. As a Construction Manager for BVA Development, Korey is committed to assisting in the construction division expansion that will grow to accommodate the rapidly developing commercial industry. He prides himself on having the drive and tenacity to overcome any obstacles in his path and always welcomes future challenges. Korey has very high expectations for his professional career but his family is the foundation and focus of his priorities. He was married in 2011 to his wife Jennie and they have two small girls, Leila and Josslyn. They are the primary motivation of his relentless pursuit of excellence.

Keith Baker began painting houses in high school and worked construction through college, renovating houses in addition to performing rental make readies and rehabbing flips for investors while earning a degree in Philosophy and German. He never took a class in real estate, finance, accounting or business. Everything he’s learned about business, real estate, and lending has been through practical experience: successes and failures. He started his own construction/general contractor company after college. After closing his contractor business, Keith worked as a Construction Manager at McGuyer Home Builders (Pioneer and Plantation Homes). When the housing market peaked and began to crumble, he jumped head first into a field position with an oilfield service provider: Schlumberger and then parlayed my oilfield knowledge into a career as an energy loss adjuster. When Keith decided to invest in real estate, he hadn’t yet developed the confidence to speak to sellers, so he bought his first investment property from his parents, just to get things moving. He and his wife then house hacked their way through their starter home, which we slowly flipped for a nice profit. Then Keith decided it was time to become a landlord, which was a painful experience. Because he travels so much for a day job that he actually enjoys, Keith converted an old 401(k) into a self-directed IRA (with Quest IRA) and began private lending to local real estate investors to keep himself in the real estate investing loop, close to the action, and to expand his network. Through private lending he bought my first rental property from a potential borrower and met his partner, Landon. Together he and Landon formed Asset REI, which focuses on providing owner financing for both buyers and properties that are neglected and overlooked by the conventional “too big to fail banks.” Thus they become the bank! As President/CEO, Mae develops and maintains client relationships for the firm and directs all engineering and planning projects acquired by the organization. Mae is an alumna of Illinois Institute of Technology and graduated with a Bachelor’s of Science in Civil Engineering in 1999. She is a licensed Civil Engineer in the State of Illinois. As a grade and high school student, Mae experienced chronic homelessness with her mother. At her mother’s passing, it left her homeless, as a college student. Because of these trying times, Mae gained independence and resilience. After years of working at different corporations, she knew it was time for change. In 2010, with $10,000 in her pocket, she quit her $75,000 per year job and became a STEM entrepreneur. A risk taker and leader, Mae used this opportunity to position herself to make a major move. Today, CKL Engineers, LLC is one of Chicago’s leading African American woman owned engineering and management firms. The firm is a winner of the 2018 Engineering Excellence Honor Award for its role in construction management for the overhaul of I-90 Jane Addams Memorial Tollway. Her company’s new role is Construction Manager for the upcoming Pullman Clock Tower and Administration Building Renovation Project, part of a national park by President Obama. Mae has always been the type of person who believed in her astute intellect and always believed that she could do anything.
