This episode of Hoots on The Ground, Lean Builder Nation gets an introduction to the man behind the stories on LinkedIn, Mr. Matt Ohley! (Note: Not OH-LAY!, Oh-lee!) Matt talks about the challenges he faced growing up in the legal system! He talks a lot about living in the present time, not in the past and not in the future, but in the present. He goes through how he discovered the importance of this concept and how he goes about accomplishing this difficult principle. Matt discusses the real life of working in the trades and giving your body for the project's sake. He gives us an example of when he was HIM! Hoots prompts Matt to talk more about the time he built an intricate drainage project that he had to take over from someone else. Matt talks about how he broke through some of the things he suffered. He gets vulnerable about discovering common patterns in his life that he wasn't fond of and how he challenged his 43-year-old self to make some changes. When he started talking to a professional, he was able to have success with making positive changes in his life. From there he started to read and learned how to be human and navigate this thing called life! Matt lets the viewers better understand how he was able to deal with his big issues. He recommends a book called The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle. “You are not your mind” is one of the major takeaways that Hoots has and is still thinking about as these show notes are being typed up! You are not your thoughts. You can observe and control what you think about. This concept gets easier with practice. Matt runs us through a practical example of what his days look like. The first thing he does is hit the snooze button at 3:30 am, so don't confuse him with Jocko or David Goggins! His meditation routine is the most important part of his day to get it in the right mindset and place to take on the day! From barefoot standing on the ground to breathing techniques and cold shower treatments, he has experimented with it all! No matter what, he starts the day by being present with himself! Hoots and Matt discuss the Hawthorne Effect to increase production within the construction industry. To better understand, tune in to the whole episode to catch some of the wisdom that Matt is laying down.   ABOUT HOOTS ON THE GROUND PODCAST: The Lean Builder's absolutely, positively NO Bullshido podcast. We were joined by Coy Veach, Vice President at Freese and Nichols and past Chair of the Engineer Joint Contract Documents Committee to discuss the newly released Construction Manager At Risk document series now available through acec.org and ejcdc.org. The comprehensive new EJCDC series consists of 27 documents, including contracts, bonds, contractor-procurement documents, and administrative forms, intended for use on projects in which the owner retains a construction manager at risk (CMAR) to provide preconstruction services and then construct the project.  The Construction Manager at Risk method of delivering projects evolved from traditional design-bid-build by involving the construction contractor early in the project. The CMAR delivery process adds value by (1) having the contractor involved in the design phase of the project, by performing services such as constructability reviews, providing advice on material availability and selection, estimating and scheduling, assessment of risk factors and mitigating strategies, development of procurement strategies, and organization of the work into efficient work packages; (2) taking advantage of opportunities for early procurement of materials and equipment, especially in volatile markets; and (3) starting construction before the design of the entire project is complete (fast tracking). ACEC members can save 50% on any document in the new CMAR series.

Jillian Bandes is a Construction Manager with Bandes Construction, a Florida based, third-generation construction firm, with a strong portfolio of commercial work for the private and public sectors. Jillian has experience in commercial and residential construction, as well as for-profit and nonprofit development. In today's episode Jillian walks us through the challenges of being a female general contractor in a male dominated industry and how she navigates her role with grace. Tune into the episode to learn more about Jillian, her career, and about her volunteer work through a nonprofit organization she leads known as YIMBY St. Pete. YIMBY St. Pete concentrates on public policy approaches that can fix the affordable housing crisis through ways that don't cost taxpayers money.Memorable Moments:9:05- Especially as a GC, I'm almost positive that most of my clients don't ever have the opportunity to work with a female GC on some of their commercial jobs just in the nature of our market.19:22 There is a national housing shortage. It's a major crisis everywhere. It is really acute in St. Pete, and so I think we have a really valuable role to play in the conversation.21:27 Affordable housing impacts everyone, it impacts, you know, middle sized businesses like ours, impacts big corporations, it impacts you know, moms trying to get to, a grocery store near where their kids are, you know, it just hits every single part of our society.23:20 In terms of my company, I primarily want to work with happy employees. I know, that's not always the business goal, you know, I want to make money, I want to have great clients and I really value some of the great clients that I have. But day in day out, the folks you are working with are the folks who you do business with who you rely on to get the jobs done. And I have just such incredible coworkers right now. They really make it worth getting up and doing what I do all day long worth it. I find it really engaging and kind of, they're entertaining in a lot of ways, you know that that lifts you up.30:15 It took me so long to understand the mechanics of building and I feel like that learning process could have been shortened if I had majored in something that was a little different.Connect with Nancy:Instagram: https://instagram.com/nancysurakLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/nancysurak/Website: www.nancysurak.comConnect with Jillian:LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jillianbandes/Website: https://www.bandesconstruction.com/Email: Jillian.Bandes@bandesconstruction.comJullian's Book Recommendations:Haruki Murakami Books on Amazon https://amzn.to/3vWdAe4Pema Chödrön Books on Amazon https://amzn.to/3kWdpZUShe's WILD Sound Production by:Luke Surak, Surak Productions: surakproductions@gmail.com

Creativity comes in many forms. It's the ability to solve problems, as well as the understanding and use of communication tools to convey information. Our guest has demonstrated both of those elements of creativity in his naval service. LT. Rylan Tuohy, USN, is a 2016 Applied Physics graduate of the Naval Academy, and he's earned a Master's Degree in Project Management from the University of Maryland. He has served as an officer in the Navy's Civil Engineering Corps and he has more than 15 million views of his work on YouTube. We talk about how Rylan used creativity in his role in the SeaBees (Navy Construction Battalion), and beyond. We discuss are you "born with" a creativity function, or can you develop it? How does your ability to communicate and motivate as a leader play in the productions that you've created? Movies are a "team sport". How did your time in the Navy help you build those skills? You've taken some risks with your career path and with some of the choices that you made. Why and how did you take those risks? LT Rylan Tuohy, USN, is a 2016 Applied Physics graduate of the Naval Academy, and has earned a Master's Degree in project management. He's been a Platoon Commander in Amphibious Construction Battalion ONE, a Construction Manager, Legal Officer, and most recently, the Assistant Operations Officer at Amphibious Construction Battalion ONE.

In this episode, Kyle discusses what he learned from his own military transition and civilian career, sharing expert insights and advice along the way. He explains why he recommends that his FourBlock students think of the military as a corporation, and shares what he believes to be one of the most important steps for a veteran in transition to take. Kyle started his career as an active-duty engineering officer in the United States Air Force after completing the ROTC program at Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Massachusetts. He was initially stationed at Moody Air Force Base in Georgia, followed by McGuire Air Force Base in New Jersey, with two deployments in between totaling a five-year military career. After separating from the military, he took a position in Houston with Exxon Mobile supporting mega-capital projects (above $1B), focused on improving downstream operations at the second-largest refinery in the United States. Kyle currently lives in Los Angeles and manages a team focused on construction and real estate operations for SpaceX. He also serves as a FourBlock Career Readiness Instructor for the Los Angeles cohort of our Career Readiness Program.   ABOUT US Welcome to the FourBlock Podcast, a show that examines veteran career transition and the military-civilian divide in the workplace. General Charles Krulak coined the term "Three Block War" to describe the nature of 21st-century military service defined by peace-keeping, humanitarian aid, and full combat. But what happens next? Veterans are often unprepared to return home and begin new careers. We call this the Fourth Block.  FourBlock is a national non-profit that has supported thousands of transitioning service members across the nation in beginning new and meaningful careers.  Mike Abrams (@fourblock) is an Afghanistan veteran, FourBlock founder, director of the Columbia University Center for Veteran Transition and Integration, and author of two military transition books.
