Tune in to hear Barbara Brown talk about her tour from Chi-town, through New York, and then across the country to Phoenix where she found the 12 step program through her family and friends. She has now created her own legacy of helping others through a program of sobriety that includes hugging babies at Hushabye nursery and supporting Arizona Women's Recovery Center through her golf tournament, dedicated to her husband who passed away several years ago. Barbara is a shining example of continued sobriety through acts of service and supporting other addicts in their own journey.
As a Neonatal Nurse Practitioner for 30 years, Tara Sundem was a frontline worker in the growing opiate epidemic, caring for the newborns suffering through opiate withdrawal. Her passion to transform the healthcare experience for them and their families led her to found Hushabye Nursery, a nonprofit dedicated to caring for opiate-exposed newborns in their first weeks of life. The 12-bed inpatient nursery opened its doors and its arms to these babies and their mothers in November 2020. Hushabye Nursery has grown from an idea to “save the babies” in 2016, to a unique model of care for this underserved population that focuses on the family unit, both prenatal and postnatal. The nursery has 12 rooms for inpatient detox customized for infants born with Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome (NAS), where their family members can stay, and provides intensive outpatient services for all family members as part of Hushabye's continuous care. Label: Laurie 3028Year: 1959Condition: M-Last Price: $40.00. Not currently available for sale.I do believe this is the nicest copy of this classic, gorgeous Doo-Wop number I've yet had in the store since opening in 2001! The audio is so remarkable I had to make an mp3 "snippet" for you to enjoy. Simply brilliant sound! The flip is also highly worthy. By the way, this group had no albums, only singles... and they're all gems! Note: This 45 record comes in a vintage Laurie Records factory sleeve. The labels look Mint, and the vinyl (styrene) grades very close to Mint in appearance. The audio sounds as flawless as grooves these old can sound!
An in-depth interview with Al Contrera, member of The Mystics, 50's Doo Wop group who had a #20 hit song with "Hushabye" which is also the title of Al's book on his life in music.

And we will all go together To pick wild mountain thyme All around the purple heather Will you go? Lassie, will you go? If my true love won't come with me Then I would surely find another To pick wild mountain thyme All around the purple heather Will you go? Lassie, will ya go? And we will all go together To pick wild mountain thyme All around the purple heather Will you go? Will you go? Lassie will you go? The Man in the Moon The man in the moon dropped in last night He and Miss Muffet stopped in for a bite They said little boy blue was out for the night Chasing cows through the Milky Way They ask my opinion on kippers and kings And did I think trouble went around like a ring Did you ever hear such a curious thing Did you think it would make me cry I say to myself down and said where did you go Why did you leave as I started to grow They both shake their heads and softly said no It’s a trick of perspective you see Like all the king’s horses and all the kings men You’ve been marching away since this story began You went straight away in search of an end For something you thought might be Now I sit at a desk while my dreams all die The telephone rings, the debts pile high While I’d rather be somewhere up in the sky Singing songs with the man in the moon Twinkle twinkle little star How I wonder what you are Op above the world so high A diamond in the sky They both smiled and stood and said thanks for the tea But they had an appointment at a quarter to three They said look them up if by chance I was free They’d be happy to shine on down So I’m sleeping out in the yard tonight And I don’t care if the midges may bite For the stars overhead are a beautiful sight And the moon is shining down So when you sit at your desk in your dreams all die The telephone rings and the debts pile high Wouldn’t you rather be up in the sky Singing songs with the man in the moon Oh what a wonderful tune Singing songs with the man on the moon. Bonnie Ship the Diamond The Diamond is a ship, my lads For the Davis Strait we're bound The quay it is all garnished With bonnie lasses 'round Captain Thompson gives the order To sail the ocean wide Where the sun it never sets, my lads Nor darkness dims the sky For it's cheer up my lads Let your hearts never fail For the bonnie ship the Diamond Goes a-hunting for the whale Along the quay at Peterhead The lasses stand aroon Wi' their shawls all pulled around them And the saut tears runnin' doon Don't you weep, my bonnie wee lass Though you be left behind For the rose will grow on Greenland's ice Before we change our mind For it's cheer up my lads Let your hearts never fail For the bonnie ship the Diamond Goes a-hunting for the whale Here's a health to the Resolution Likewise the Eliza Swan Three cheers for the Battler of Montrose And the Diamond, ship of fame We wear the trousers o' the white The jackets o' the blue When we get back to Peterhead We'll hae sweethearts enou' For it's cheer up my lads Let your hearts never fail For the bonnie ship the Diamond Goes a-hunting for the whale It will be bright both day and night When the Greenland lads come hame Our ship full up with oil, my lads And money to our name We'll make the cradles for to rock And the blankets for to tear And every lass in Peterhead sing ""Hushabye, my dear"" For it's cheer up my lads Let your hearts never fail For the bonnie ship the Diamond Goes a-hunting for the whale For it's cheer up my lads Let your hearts never fail For the bonnie ship the Diamond Goes a-hunting for the whale We are Ye Banished Privateers Ye Banished Privateers In a filthy old tavern in the port of Belfast There sat a drunken laddie, he was tall as a scooner's mast He said ""My name is Charles and I am your king An' my royal arse on your ship you shall bring!"" Well I said ""You sure can swagger, but a king you are not"" And if I had that fucker here, I'd sure have him shot! ""But I need one more swabber, and we're leavin' tonight And you'll find the pay is good, can you sail, can you fight."" We are Ye Banished Privateers We are King Charlie's rovers, we're sailors besmeared We are Ye Banished Privateers We'll be hanged by the neck if near England we steer But Charlie was a weak one, a real worthless prick He threw up all the time 'cause the salt made 'em sick And when we were plundering a rich merchant ship He ran into hiding, trembling his lip But sea legs can grow on the weakest of lads It turned out some talent in fencing I had Once I grew fond of the pirate charade I'd be the first to dive into the fray We are Ye Banished Privateers We are King Charlie's rovers, we're sailors besmeared We are Ye Banished Privateers We'll be hanged by the neck if near England we steer We roamed all over the seven seas We plundered wherever there riches may be From ye coast of Tortuga to ye shores of Cape Horn We looted n' pillaged both poor and well born For each passing year an' each bottle of rum Had Charlie a more vicious pirate become One with the laddies so fearful and great He advanced to the rank of first mate We are Ye Banished Privateers We are King Charlie's rovers, we're sailors besmeared We are Ye Banished Privateers We'll be hanged by the neck if near England we steer But each thing so good, must come to an end And Charlie a letter from England was sent It turned that rascal was truly our king He returned from his exile during the spring I gave them my blessing to rove n' I said ""A yearly wager in gold you'll be paid But back home to England you cannot return For you are the scum of the Earth I have learned!"" We are Ye Banished Privateers We are King Charlie's rovers, we're sailors besmeared We are Ye Banished Privateers We'll be hanged by the neck if near England we steer We are Ye Banished Privateers We are King Charlie's rovers, we're sailors besmeared We are Ye Banished Privateers We'll be hanged by the neck if near England we steer We are Ye Banished Privateers We are King Charlie's rovers, we're sailors besmeared We are Ye Banished Privateers We'll be hanged by the neck if near England we steer!
The vocal harmony group tradition, known as Doo Wop, developed in the post-World War II era. It was the most popular form of rhythm and blues music among black teenagers, especially those living in the large urban centers of the eastern coast, in Chicago, and in Detroit. To those of us kids who were color-blind, it was just cool music coming from our transistor radios. That was the beauty of radio. Music wasn’t defined by a color, just by the beat and the mood you felt deep in your soul. Many groups specialized in romantic ballads that appealed to the sexual fantasies of teenagers in the late 1940s and early 1950s. By the mid-1950s, vocal harmony groups had transformed the smooth delivery of ballads into a performance style incorporating the nonsense phrase, “Doo Wop-Doo Wop” as vocalized by the bass singers, who provided rhythmic movement for an a cappella song style. Who says wedding photographers and videographers don't get on? Having had the pleasure of working with Jade from Hushabye films on a recent wedding, I knew she'd be a great podcast guest and she proved to be awesome. We sit (in a busy London cafe so apologies for the background blurb) and chat all things videography; from stolen lenses to overheard conversations. It's a fun way to end season three and Jade sets the standard for next season's guests!
Label: Laurie 3028Year: 1959Condition: M-Last Price: $30.00. Not currently available for sale. From a warehouse find, this is a new, unplayed stock copy, in its original Laurie Records factory sleeve. Although this vinyl pressing has some notable storage wear, it has simply brilliant sound! The flip is also highly worthy. By the way, this group had no albums, only singles... and they're all gems! Note: This copy's labels have some notable storage wear, especially on the B label (the A label is Near Mint). The vinyl has some light storage wear, but the grooves preserve pristine Mint sound... a real treat!
Ep19: Hushabye Mountain. Written by the Sherman brothers for the musical Chitty Chitty Bang Bang it has lyrics and a melody that will soothe us all in these difficult times.
Ep 16: Sleep On. Composed by Paul Mealor for Prince George, and sung by New Zealand singer, Hayley Westenra in her album Hushabye, this is a most beautiful modern lullaby.
“These songs come from a place of exhaustion, bewilderment and pure love,” says Nashville-based singer/songwriter Dawn Landes of My Tiny Twilight, a six-song collection out May 10 on Yep Roc Records. “I found myself singing to my daughter constantly to soothe her, entertain her, and pass the time, says Landes. “The first song I wrote was “Hushabye.” I couldn’t get her to stop crying so I sat at the piano and played until she quieted down. She responded to the melody and it became pretty useful in those first months.” You can also hear the whole song 'I'm Your Mama' at the end of the show. How about the video that Dawn directed herself? Check it! https://youtu.be/ibw8RNiDybI Continue reading Episode #218 – Dawn Landes on the site.

The Rock N Roll Archaeologists talks doowop with Al Contrera where they dissect his book, 'Hushabye: The Mystics, the Music and the Mob'. An original founding member of the Mystics, author Al Contrera tells the true story of how five Brooklyn teenagers went from singing on street corners to fame in the fifties with their first hit song, “Hushabye.” Contrera, provides vivid and detailed accounts of the trials and adventures of forming a rock-‘n’-roll group in a neighborhood controlled by the mob.

In this, our 8th full episode, we reviewed our G Book - "Hushabye" by Celina Grace. This was the first in her Kate Redman series. The infant son of Nick and Casey Fullman is kidnapped from his nursery and his nanny has been killed. Casey, a former D list reality TV star is prostrate with grief while her husband Nick is consumed by his business and hardly misses a telephone call. He lets his assistant deal with any and all unpleasant issues.
The song I have sent you this week is called “DooWop Days” and reminds us of the vocal groups past and present who produce this great style of music. It began in the States with street corner groups singing acapella and progressed into the rock and roll scene….it is similar to a rocky version of “barbershop”….it is a style I have always liked with those wonderful multi voice arrangements…..I’ve sent it because this week I got an Email from a guy called George Galfo who is the only original surviving member of The Mystics and thanked me for including his band in the song. The Mystics had a massive hit in the 50’s with a song called “Hushabye” which is still one of my favourites to this day…so much so I include their riff at the end of the song….the group are still performing and he told me they are soon off to Italy to do a DooWop concert……..that’s the power of the internet and it made my day. And I’d like to say hello to my mate Stevie Davies who plays bass and sings at our wednesday night jam sessions…great player and singer and great guy…and listens in. 2.Still on the music scene I’m not a massive fan of rap but I do like the visual of some of these guys….I saw P.Diddy on a chat show and he was undoubtedly the coolest dude I have ever seen. Last week Ice Cube was on The Graham Norton Show and was asked what he thought of the boycott of the Oscars by black actors….he said he couldn’t care less as he performs to his fans and it is immaterial what some so called academy thinks…and added that some of these stars need to get over themselves…..cool or what !!!....now THIS is sense !! Before they all scream “racist” maybe…just maybe…there are better actors than them? 3.There is a major scam going on in this country whereby cars deliberately stop and let the one behind crash into them…thus creating claims for whiplash etc….even BUSES are in on it. To me the answer is quite simple…false claims should receive a jail sentence…it’s fraud…simple as that….and anyone involved in the organisation of these scams should be jailed and receive a life ban from driving. ….including SOLICITORS who are a scab on society…..having said that if you drive safely you should leave enough room to slow down before going into the back of someone. A guy went into the back of me a few years back…..he hit my towbar and wrote the front of his car off….mine had no damage at all… so I helped him get out of the traffic and called it a day….I didn’t claim whiplash because I didn’t have it and I am not a lying grabbing piece of low life….the chap called at my house a week later with a bunch of flowers and a bottle of wine. 4.Also the media make matters worse with their one sided reporting…they had a feature regarding a lady who was “sitting at the traffic lights” and decided to peel a banana…she was seen by an unmarked police car and fined “£140” for not being in control of the vehicle…they had the lady in the studio who said she was actually moving but still in first gear…and had she not pleaded guilty it could have cost her over a grand. SHE WAS DRIVING WITH BOTH HANDS OFF THE WHEEL!!!..the moaners and wingers would be the first to complain if one of their family had been injured on their pushbike by someone peeling a banana If this is national news it’s time to call it a day. 5.I did a bit of baby sitting for my son last weekend and he sorted us out with “Jurassic Park”…..in 3D!!....it was unbelievable….more so in that it hadn’t originally been made in 3D….it was all done with modern technology….put the glasses on and there you are standing next to Sir Richard Attenborough…..it does make you wonder how far technology is yet to advance….
