[@2 min] Alright, this week...THE Iestyn Davies takes a Free Throw on one of his signature role, Didymus in Handel's Theodora. A role, incidentally, which will mark his debut with Chicago's Music of the Baroque this weekend. And since Oliver loves Iestyn so much, we'll revisit a favorite Inside the Huddle with the British countertenor from the OBS archives. [@44 min] And then, in the 'Two Minute Drill'…America will FINALLY celebrate Christ at Christmas. And it's supposed to be BARBER of Seville, not CHEESEMONGER of Seville...  I'm so pleased to share a conversation I recorded back in September with Iestyn Davies. Iestyn is one of the world's most sought after countertenors. A noted interpreter of Handel. His repertoire also extends beyond the traditional confines of the Baroque repertoire, having recently released a disc of English song, and relishing the challenges of contemporary music, as you'll hear later in this conversation. Iestyn and I talked about a range of topics, including his favourite Handel roles, his thoughts on Baroque ornamentation, acting, what it was like working with Sir Mark Rylance, the countertenor repertoire, and maintaining a career in the classical music industry, including some of his thoughts about the advantages and disadvantages of competitions and the music college system. I'd seen Iestyn a few months before in a concert performance of Handel's opera Orlando back in the summer with the Academy of Ancient Music at the Barbican; a terrific afternoon of music. We spent the first part talking about this concert, leading into a discussion about some of the more cumbersome aspects of Handel's writing and in concert performances. Thank you very much Iestyn for giving up your time, as well as your patience, your good humour and wise words throughout the hour or so we spent talking.

August is a big month for debuts, and we have one of our own - listener Rob made his first appearance on the pod, to talk about Tuesday's defeat at Orient, alongside Ed who witnessed Saturday's glorious home win against Doncaster. Between them they discuss the switch from a back five to a back four, fizzy midfielders, and squad depth. This was recorded and edited in haste due to holiday plans and lack of access to our usual tech - so apologies for the shonky audio; normal service will be resumed next week.We also touch on Thursday night's meeting of the NCAFC Supporters Trust (join if you're not already a member), and we also gave a plug to the fundraiser for Iestyn Davies, Chepstow Town's young defender who was this week diagnosed with Stage 2 Hodgkins Lymphoma - please spare a few quid if you can. As a former president of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists – only the second woman to hold that post in its 94-year history – she shone a light on historically taboo subjects from period problems and contraception to the menopause. Lesley was born in London in 1956. When she was seven she told her father that she wanted to be a doctor and although the sciences weren't her strongest subjects at school, she won a place at the Royal Free Hospital Medical School in London in 1975. In 1991 she was appointed a senior lecturer in Obstetrics and Gynaecology at St Mary's Hospital in London and consultant at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust. Patrick Radden Keefe, who has been shortlisted for the Baillie Gifford Prize of Prizes award, discusses his book Empire of Pain: The Secret History of the Sackler Dynasty. It tells the shocking story of the Sackler family and the part their company, Purdue Pharma, played in America's opioid crisis. “The word ‘divine',” Iestyn Davies says, ”has changed its meaning to indicate nowadays beauty as well as Divinity.” The songs countertenor Iestyn Davies has selected for his new album, Divine Music: An English Songbook, reflect this change. There are settings by Purcell, Britten and Butterworth and words by Shakespeare, de la Mare and Housman. That prolific artist Anonymous makes a significant contribution, too. Iestyn Davies talks to Tom Sutcliffe about his choices and, accompanied by pianist Joseph Middleton, performs one of them, appropriately titled, ‘A Hymn on Divine Music'. Theatre is not only becoming increasingly focused on telling stories about our climate crisis, but also thinking more about how sustainably it actually stages those stories. Paddy Dillon, theatre architect and founder of the Theatre Green Book, and Kate McGrath, director of Fuel Theatre Company, talk about cutting the carbon footprint of fixed theatres and touring productions. Presenter Tom Service visits the Pit Theatre at the Barbican to learn more about a new theatrical meditation on the bittersweet consolations of sorrow. He speaks to countertenor Iestyn Davies about the melancholy of John Dowland's music and its power to process grief, while the director Netia Jones tells Tom how she's weaved together creative visuals with philosophical musings of Robert Burton's 17th-century treatise The Anatomy of Melancholy as well as those of Freud and other contemporary experts of the human condition. As the BBC celebrates its centenary, Music Matters is joined by composers Matthew Herbert and Anna Meredith, and Artistic Associate of the Southbank Gillian Moore, to discuss the corporation's role as a commissioner of contemporary repertoire during the past 100 years. Tom catches-up with composer Tom Floyd, singer Sophie Goldrick, and Professor Marion Thain during rehearsals of a new opera, Veritable Michael, which charts the creative life and love affair of two women who operated together under the pseudonym Michael Field – a 19th century fictional author whose work was celebrated by the likes of Oscar Wilde and Robert Browning. And Tom takes a trip to the Victoria and Albert Museum where he'd joined by Harriet Reed, the co-curator of Re:Imagining Musicals – a new display of glittering costumes and musical memorabilia – to explore the craftmanship, creative renewal, and evolutionary impetus behind some of the most iconic musicals of the past seven decades.

In this episode, Davina reviews two newly released albums hot off the press:  Handel's 'La Resurrezione' by The English Concert and 'John Wilbye – Draw on Sweet Night ' by I Fagiolini and Robert Hollingworth. The English Concert and Harry Bicket's acclaimed concert cycle of Handel operas and oratorios continues with its second release on Linn, following Handel's Rodelinda last year. La Resurrezione, composed by Handel in his mid-twenties, and first performed on Easter Sunday in 1708, marked the climax of Handel's time in Rome. The work details the events between and during Good Friday and Easter Sunday. This new album features some of today's finest voices including Lucy Crowe, Iestyn Davies, Sophie Bevan, Ashley Riches and Hugo Hymas. Davina is joined in The Classical Corner by Iestyn and Lucy to talk about their favourite arias, Handel's operatic writing and the process of recording the album.   To welcome the spring, I Fagiolini has put aside its beloved Monteverdi to uncover its own national heritage: the best of John Wilbye's classic Golden Age madrigals. The album marks the first specific recording of Wilbye's Madrigals released since the 1980s.  The album covers a central part of English choral culture that has been strangely out of fashion for so long, sung by a group that has matured into the repertoire. The plangent dissonance of ‘Draw on, sweet night' and ‘Weep, weep, mine eyes' evoke English melancholy, while ‘Sweet honeysucking bees' and ‘Adieu, sweet Amaryllis' are such sheer pleasure to sing that many listeners will scrabble to unearth old scores. Davina chats to Robert about how this new album came about, the choice of repertoire and the sheer delight of listening to and singing English madrigals. With special thanks to Linn Records and Coro for the use of these beautiful recordings. Love it or hate it, London dominates the UK politically, economically and culturally. It's nearly 200 years since one critic famously described the capital as ‘the Great Wen' a monstrous cyst sucking the life blood from the rest of the country. And for many that belief still stands. In The London Problem: What Britain Gets Wrong About Its Capital City the academic, and Londoner, Jack Brown untangles the complex strands of anti-London rhetoric, separating hyperbole from fact. In 2019 the former special advisor Dominic Cummings told journalists to ‘get out of London. Go and talk to people who are not rich Remainers', feeding into another perception of the capital. But the city is far from homogenous: 40% of Londoners voted for Brexit, and the population is the most ethnically and religiously diverse and has the greatest levels of poverty, compared to the rest of the country. The writer Jennifer Kavanagh spent two years getting out and talking to people on the streets of London – from beggars, to stall owners, to entertainers to thieves. Let Me Take You By The Hand tells the stories in their own words, of those who work and live in the capital. The German composer George Frideric Handel moved to London in 1712 and made it his home. The countertenor Iestyn Davies celebrates Handel's life in the capital, following his footsteps from his operatic triumphs in Covent Garden, past his local church in Hanover Square, to his Mayfair home. In Handel's London Altos, at King's Place on 24th June, Davies will perform a series of pieces showcasing his best work. Producer: Katy Hickman

In order to be a Roman Emperor, you had to be entirely cold-blooded. It was a violent world of infighting, ruthless slander, and take-no-prisoners politics -- a world where rulers would kill a million people and enslave a million more just to flex their power. This was the Game of Thrones setting that George Frideric Handel chose for Agrippina. The opera's name comes from Empress Agrippina the Younger, a woman of ambition and influence, and this episode focuses on someone who inadvertently stands in her way: the hapless Ottone. He doesn’t realize that becoming the heir to the throne has put a target on his back, and that Agrippina is aiming to take him down. Eventually she turns everyone against Ottone, leaving him in total despair.  Having lost his friends, his future, and the love of his life, Ottone asks “Why me?” in the aria “Voi che udite il mio lamento.” Host Rhiannon Giddens and three guests take you on a tour of the cutthroat politics of ancient Rome, a world of murder and mayhem that still has something to teach us today.  Countertenor Iestyn Davies likes singing the role of Ottone because as the only honest character in the opera, he’s an audience favorite. This was the last role he sang at the Met right before the lockdown, and he knows that his future performances will be deepened by his experience of the pandemic.  Handel expert Dr. Alison DeSimone is an assistant professor of musicology at the University of Missouri, Kansas City, where she teaches courses in music of the Renaissance and Baroque periods. She loves how Handel gets to the emotional depths of all of his characters, making them feel like real people. She recently published a book called The Power of Pastiche about music and culture in 18th-century England. Historian Dr. Emma Southon is a recovering academic, writer, podcast host, and scholar of the ancient world. She's amused that ancient Romans are presented as paragons of civilization and culture even though their murder and mudslinging is anything but civilized. She wrote her first book, a biography of Agrippina, because she felt the Empress deserved her own book and no one else was stepping up to write it.

What's brewing backstage with the Orchestra? In September 2019, Netty met up with countertenor Iestyn Davies during our run of Handel's Agrippina at the Royal Opera House, where he sang the role of Ottone. They discuss Iestyn's archaeology degree, how you don't choose to become a countertenor, and the important role of Cathedrals in British musical life. Tea with Netty is the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment's podcast hosted by viola player Annette Isserlis (Netty). Over a cuppa (or something a little stronger...), Netty chats with a variety of conductors, players and other guests as she 'spills the tea' on the side of classical music you don't normally hear.Iestyn performs with the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment in Vivaldi and Pergolesi: Sacred Baroque, touring to London, Saffron Walden, New York and Ohio in November 2019.

Last year we covered Claire Van Kampen’s Farinelli and the King after it transferred from the Sam Wannamaker Playhouse at Shakespeare’s Globe to the Duke of York’s Theatre in London’s West End. This past Sunday, it opened on Broadway. The reviews have been raves pretty much across the board. Getting just as many great notices as the play’s star are Sam Crane and Iestyn Davies who play Farinelli and Farinelli’s Voice respectively.
