Mitch Daniels to talk about his new book, “Boiler Up,” a collection of speeches, op-eds and lectures from his time at Purdue. His 2018 commencement address, included in the book, highlighted the need to be exposed to different viewpoints in order to ward off tribalism. Some colleges around the country, including Stanford, Columbia and Penn, have faced criticism for statements their leaders have made following Hamas' Oct. 7 attack on Israel. Asked to view the universities' responses through the lens of that speech, Daniels said some institutions have “disgraced themselves.A section of Daniels' book, titled “The Grand Experiment — The Future of Democracy,” includes an op-ed criticizing the Commission on Presidential Debates for blocking third-party and independent candidates from taking part in presidential debates. Daniels, who once served on the commission, said the odds are still against a successful third-party candidate in 2024, but far more voters likely would be receptive to one than at any other time in U.S. history. Daniels said third parties haven't done well in the past because the two major parties could draw large numbers of centrist voters.Daniels said he most wants readers to take away an appreciation for Purdue University and the role of higher education more broadly in the United States. He said higher education has allowed too many people to question its value, particularly given the cost of tuition. Daniels famously froze tuition when he took the reins at Purdue in 2013, a policy that remains in effect to this day. He said much of the student loan debt crisis could be averted if colleges simply didn't charge students so much. He said a good idea might be to charge schools for a portion of any defaulted debt on federal loans.Daniels also addressed the legacy of longtime Indiana University men's basketball coach Bob Knight, whose death at age 83 was announced Wednesday. Army Sgt. Maj. William O. Wooldridge, the first Sergeant Major of the Army, has passed away. Wooldridge, who served in the Army for more than 30 years, received two Silver Stars for gallantry in action while fighting in Europe during World War II. He is survived by his wife, Patty. He was 89 years old. March is Women's History Month and the Naval Heritage and History Command has a section of their website devoted to Navy women, including videos, articles, oral histories and other documents. Recently, an all-female team of Naval aviators made history by running the first all-female combat mission in an E-2C Hawkeye. Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta visited troops from the 101st Airborne Division in Fort Campbell, Ky., to host a townhall meeting. He took questions on a variety of topics, including recent "Blue on Green" crimes by Taliban infiltrators in the Afghan National Security Force. Tornadoes and extreme weather struck the midwestern and southeastern United States and the National Guard was ready to help with rescue, cleanup and recovery operations. In Henryville, Ind., a town devastated by the tornadoes, Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels and Indiana National Guard Adjutant General Maj. Gen. R. Martin Umbarger met with residents, the press and the troops helping get the city back on its feet. A new settlement between the U.S. government and major housing lenders will have major implications for service members who have faced foreclosure in recent years. President Barack Obama outlined some of the benefits those service members may receive.
