New figures from the Department of Education show that Clare is falling behind the national average when it comes to Irish-medium education. Fewer than 5% of students in the county attend a Gaelscoil, compared to 6.5% nationwide, and Clare has just four Gaelscoileanna — well below the typical number in other counties. At the same time, there are some more encouraging signs at early years level, with higher exposure to Irish in childcare settings locally than across the country as a whole. So, what's behind these mixed trends, and what needs to happen to grow the Irish language in Clare? Alan Morrissey was joined by Leah Ní Thailtigh, Language Planning Officer with An Clár as Gaeilge and Irish and Cultural Officer with Clare GAA, and MacDara Ó Conaola, Native Irish speaker from Inis Oírr, in The Aran Island Gaeltacht, and Irish Language columnist Image © Clare FM

Health issues were to the fore in more ways than one this week. There was a very public back and forth between the Health Minister Jennifer Carroll MacNeill and BAM in relation to the National Children's Hospital. Closer to home on Galway Talks we focused in on the Rare Diseases Strategy which is being developed for the next five years up to 2030. There are calls for expansion of rare diseases tested for, but also reliability of said tests. While plans and strategies are important, ultimately it is delivery of changes and implementations of health recommendations that will make differences on the ground. We got to see the real human impact of that when Renmore mother Roisin Costello joined us alongside Anne Lawlor, a founding member and chair of 22q Ireland. Very poignantly at the end of the interview Roisin laid bare that due to inaction on implementing changes other families have gone through similar situations to her family as genetic anomalies have not been caught by the screening system. She wants to see and has renewed her calls for a centralised screening lab here in Ireland so that nothing is missed by health officials. Giving families the medical advice they need by making them aware of all the factors going into subsequent pregnancies. BreastCheck missing screening targets for a second year running also made headlines locally here in Galway. We covered it with Prof. Michael Kerin who is over the cancer programme locally and Edel Shovlin the COO of the Irish Cancer Society. Staffing dominated the changes needed alongside implementation of recommendations and completed promised infrastructure projects. In more positive news for service users and family members in Loughrea, the Seven Springs Day Centre fully reopened this week following a long campaign from the Loughrea Concerned Citizens Group. Mattie Quinn heralded the reopening and put it down to people power, adding that “they won't be going away” anytime soon. The Presidential election has remained in the focus and this week on Galway Bay FM we heard calls for grassroots Fianna Fáil members to be given a say in who will contest the race for the Áras. Loughrea area Cllr. Michael Regan hit out at the top brass of the party and expressed his support for Eamon O'Cuív. He wants to see a democratic process opened up without delay. We should hear more on the next moves from Fianna Fáil next week when the Taoiseach discusses options with the parliamentary party. Meanwhile, two Ministers from the party were on Inis Oírr this week to announce the first announcement of the NDP spending ahead of Budget 2026. The island will benefit from over 35 million euro investment in its pier, some 20 years on from when the project became one of the many victims from the financial downturn. Better late than ever and a shock to islanders, planning will now begin in earnest to get the most out of this massive infrastructural boost to the area. Galway County Council has announced details of a new funding scheme for organisations, businesses and communities of Oileáin Árann (The Aran Islands) that are interested in developing projects and initiatives focusing on addressing climate change. €60,000 is being made available through this new pilot Climate Action Fund. Oileáin Árann, consisting of the three islands of Árainn (Inis Mór), Inis Meáin and Inis Oírr, was designated as the Galway County Decarbonisation Zone in the Galway County Council Climate Action Plan 2024-2029. A Decarbonising Zone (DZ) is a chosen area where local authorities and communities work together to reduce the amount of carbon produced by their everyday activities. By looking within the community for ways to live and work more sustainably, these zones can find local solutions to global problems. The main objective of a Decarbonising Zone is to find innovative but achievable ways to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The fund will support climate action projects in four key theme areas, namely Energy, Travel, Food and Waste, and Local Environmental Action. The fund is now open to applications. Councillor Martina Kinane, Cathaoirleach of Galway County Council, celebrated the launch of this Pilot Fund, which she says, "builds upon the remarkable dedication of the communities of Oileáin Árann in the areas of climate action and sustainability". Welcoming the opening of the funding scheme, Liam Conneally, Chief Executive of Galway County Council noted that, "This new fund will hopefully be the start of financial assistance to help our island communities to reduce the use of carbon in their day to day lives. The Fund should also help to empower the communities of Oileáin Árann, cultivating stronger, more sustainable and resilient islands". He added, "The fund will create learnings that can be shared with communities across the County". Uinsinn Finn, Director of Services at Galway County Council acknowledged the existing commitment and strength of community involvement on the islands, who have established a local Comharchumann Fuinneamh to support their goal of increasing the sustainability of their homes and transport while protecting their unique ecosystem. The closing date for applications to the Oileáin Árann Climate Action Fund is Friday 30th May. Further information is available on https://www.galway.ie/en/services/environment/climate/ or from Rebecca Mooney, Climate Action Officer at climateaction@galwaycoco.ie / 091 509302.

TG4 has made significant strides toward sustainable broadcasting by integrating solar power into its energy supply. While TG4 does not operate solely on solar energy, it supplements its electricity usage throughout most of the year and even has the capacity to run entirely on solar power. Neil Keaveney, TG4's Director of Technology, said, "We are proud to contribute to the journey toward fully sustainable broadcasting. With the recent addition of a 100kW solar array, we now have the capability, to power the station entirely with renewable energy. In fact, over the past few weeks, there have been several hours during which the station operated without drawing any power from the grid. We hope this marks a new standard for the industry." Project Duration and Installation: The project implementation was completed over a seven-month period, with on-site work lasting six weeks. Due to the sensitive nature of the land surrounding TG4's headquarters, a highly delicate installation process was conducted to ensure the preservation of the local environment. Despite challenging terrain, including the boggy conditions of the area, TG4 and EnergieXPro successfully adhered to all specifications and requirements needed to comply with the granting of planning permission. Collaboration with EnergieXPro: TG4's sustainability efforts were made possible through its successful partnership with EnergieXPro, one of Ireland's most progressive commercial solar installers and a leader in battery storage systems. EnergieXPro installed a 100.70 kWp Ground Mounted Solar PV System at TG4's headquarters in Connemara, helping the station significantly reduce its carbon footprint. Ger Barry, a representative from EnergieXPro, said, "Partnering with TG4 on this groundbreaking solar project has been an incredibly rewarding experience. By integrating our cutting-edge solar technology with TG4's commitment to sustainability, we are setting a new benchmark for energy efficiency in the broadcasting industry." "This collaboration not only highlights the potential of renewable energy but also underscores the importance of innovative solutions in tackling climate change. We look forward to continuing our partnership with TG4 and driving forward the future of sustainable broadcasting," said Barry. EnergieXPro has completed several projects in the Gaeltacht region, including Ti Ruairí on Inis Oírr, (Aran Islands) Irish Seaspray, - Tír An Fhia, Leitir Móir, Co. Galway, and now TG4, with more projects planned. Their work in both local and international markets - including ongoing projects in Ireland, Sardinia, and the Philippines - highlights their role in contributing to sustainability and environmental preservation globally. The TG4 project, which is part of an ongoing collaboration, marks just the first phase of future sustainability initiatives. EnergieXPro is committed to continuing its partnership with TG4, ensuring long-term energy savings and sustainability through its high-performance PV modules. System Details and Sustainability Impact The installed 100.70 kWp Ground Mounted Solar PV System is expected to reduce TG4's carbon emissions by approximately 51.4 tons annually. This reduction is equivalent to planting between 1,550 and 2,330 trees each year. Pioneering Environmental Sustainability As part of its commitment to environmental sustainability, TG4 has set ambitious targets to achieve 50% energy efficiency and a 50% reduction in CO2 emissions by 2030. The station is already generating 5% of its energy from renewable sources, equivalent to 300,000 kWh, and reducing CO2 emissions by 104,000 kg per year. The installation of the solar panel collector at TG4's headquarters, along with other initiatives such as LED lighting upgrades, are key steps toward achieving these goals. Aligning with Ireland's Climate Goals TG4's use of solar energy aligns with Ireland's Climate Action Framework and its participation in the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI) r...

The Aran Islands lie in Galway Bay off the west coast of Ireland. They're made up of Inis Mór, Inis Mearn, and Inis Oírr. People have likely lived on the islands since c. 3000 BCE. Late Bronze Age and Iron Age ruins scatter the islands, alongside old churches and holy wells. After the era of saints and pilgrimages, Elizabeth I unlawfully seized ownership of the islands in 1565 and in 1588, she sold them to the Lynch family. Oliver Cromwell took them back and passed them to his supporters. Absentee English landlords owned the islands until 1922. They boast such fascinating sights as the Wormhole, believed to be the home of a giant serpent, and the remains of the ancient forts. The Aran Islands are also the home of the world-famous Aran sweaters! Let's find out more about saints, ancient forts, and knitting lore in this week's episode of Fabulous Folklore! Nuacht Mhall. Príomhscéalta na seachtaine, léite go mall. * Inniu an séú lá déag de mhí an Mhárta. Is mise Gráinne Ní Bhrosnacháin. Bhain Cillian Murphy éacht amach nuair a bhuaigh sé Gradam Oscar don aisteoir fireann is fearr dá ról mar J Robert Oppenheimer. Ba é an chéad uair riamh a bhuaigh duine a rugadh in Éirinn an gradam seo. Scannán beathaisnéise atá ann, a stiúir agus a léirigh Christopher Nolan faoin bhfisiceoir a chruthaigh an buama adamhach. D'éirigh leis an scannán seacht nOscar ar fad a fháil. Agus é ag glacadh leis an ngradam dúirt Cillian go raibh sé an-tógtha ar fad. Ghabh sé buíochas le Nolan, an criú agus a chomhréalta, lena thuismitheoirí agus clann. Dúirt sé go bhfuilimid inár gcónaí i ndomhan Oppenheimer, agus thiomnaigh sé an gradam do na daoine a dheánann síocháin. Labhair sé i nGaeilge chomh maith nuair a dúirt sé 'go raibh míle maith agaibh' ag deireadh a óráide. Is as Corcaigh ó dhúchas Cillian Murphy agus tá gach éinne ina cheantar agus timpeall na hÉireann an-bhródúil as. Bhuaigh an comhlacht leiriúcháin Element Pictures ó Bhaile Átha Cliath ceithre ghradam don scannán ‘Poor Things' ina bhfuil an t-aisteoir Emma Stone, a bhuaigh an gradam don aisteoir baineann is fearr. Tá an t-iriseoir iomráiteach agus comhfhreagraí nuachta Charlie Bird tar éis bás a fháil. Le linn daichead bliain mar iriseoir, thug Charlie Bird tuairiscí ar roinnt scéalta tábhachtacha in Éirinn agus go hidirnáisiúnta, lena n-áirítear tine Stardust, seachaint cánach sa Bhanc Éireannach Náisiúnta, na hionsaithe sceimhlitheoireachta i Meán Fómhair 2001 agus an súnámaí san Aigéan Indiach in 2004. Thosnaigh sé amach mar thaighdeoir le RTÉ in 1974 agus bhí cáil air mar dhuine díograiseach agus seiftiúil ar na cláracha Seven Days agus an Late Late Show agus ansin ag glacadh páirt le cúrsaí nuachta ó 1980 ar aghaidh. Sa bhliain 2021 deineadh diagnóis go raibh an galar néarón luadrach air. Chuaigh sé os comhar an phobail leis an ngalar agus thosnaigh sé an feachtas Climb With Charlie. Dhreap sé Cruach Phádraig, ag bailiú 3.3 milliún euro ar son An Cumann Galar Néarón Luadrach in Éirinn agus Pieta. D'eagraigh sé a luaithreach bheith curtha in Inis Oírr, áit ar thug sé cuairt uirthi go minic le breis is caoga bliain. Thaistil an Taoiseach Leo Varadkar go dtí na Stáit Aontaithe le ceiliúradh a dhéanamh ar Lá Fhéile Pádraig. Chaith sé dhá lá ar thuras go Bostún. Bhuail sé le Gobharnóir Massachusetts, Maura Healey, agus dhein sé óráid i Leabharlann John F. Kennedy. Ar an Aoine bhuail sé leis an Leasuachtarán Kamala Harris agus bhí cruinniú déthaobhach aige leis na Uachtarán Joe Biden. Dúirt an Taoiseach go mbainfeadh sé úsáid as an ardán atá aige chun béim a chur ar shos cogaidh sa Mheánoirthear. Ina chuid óráidí i mBostún agus in Washington, tharraing sé aird ar an ionsaí uafásach a dhein Hamas ar Iosrael ar an 7ú lá de mhí Dheireadh Fómhair chomh maith leis an tubaiste atá ag tarlú faoi láthair in Gaza. Ag dinnéar de chuid The Ireland Funds bhí Céad-Aire agus LeasChéad-Aire Thuaisceart Éireann, Michelle O'Neill agus Emma Little-Pengelly, i láthair. An príomhchuspóir a bhí acu ná infheistiú a mhealladh go dtí an Tuaisceart. Ag an dTeach Bán tháinig an Taoiseach agus an tUachtarán le chéile.
