The reality, importance, and pitfalls of election polls with Steve Mossop

Now that's Significant

This episode of Now that's significant, a Market Research Podcast sees host, Michael Howard, the head of marketing at Infotools, speak to Steve Mossop, Executive Vice President of Leger Vancouver. Before this, Steve was president of Insights West who Leger acquired in late 2021, and prior to this, Steve was at Ipsos for 17 years managing 30+ client service staff in multiple cities after starting his career at the Angus Reid Group and TNS in earlier years. And what might give away what we're going to be talking about today, Steve has, impressively, correctly predicted the outcomes of over 25 elections over his career.  In this episode, we discuss the crucial role of election polls, and notably, how they're actually far more accurate than many realize. We hear how Steve got into polling and some lessons he's learned along the way. Steve shares the role of polls and how they can be used to help gauge public opinion, and also encourage others to vote. We discussed how one of the best indicators of whether or not someone will vote is if they know the election day date. We talked about how the main pollsters got it so wrong in the USA over the past two elections. Steve shares how important it is to know your sample in order to minimize fraud and maximize the most realistic projections. We hope you enjoy the episode. Regards, Michael and the team at Infotools.

Welcome back to Intellicast! We have a fun episode for you today! Joining Brian Lamar and Producer Brian is Andrew DeCilles again to talk some latest market research news. [4:05] The episode kicks off with the guys discussing a recently released research report from Adverity that found one-third of CMO's lack trust in their marketing data. This led to a discussion about what could cause that, and why it might be happening. Producer Brian gives his perspective as the marketing guy on where he would fall if asked this. He talks about how he puts his trust in the source of the data, and its consistency in his measure of trust. [10:23] The guys then move on and talk about Leger's acquisition of the Vancouver-based full-service firm, Insights West.  [11:39] In the next news story, Brian and Andrew discuss some more big news from the sample arena. This time the major investment Prodege received by Great Hill Partners. This actually leads to a broader debate about whether the data a panel provides changes when they receive significant money, either investment, acquisition, etc. [17:25] In our last news story of the episode, the guys talk about Wise Works rebrand to Torfac. While Brian and Andrew don't spend a lot of time on the actual story, it leads to an old-school rant by Brian about the recent rebrand trend and the names companies are rebranding to. If you missed Brian's rants from past seasons, this is the episode for you! Thanks for listening and Happy Thanksgiving! We have been nominated for the Market Research Podcast of the Year. Proving the vaccine passport violates charter rights will be difficult

Roy L Hales/ Cortes Currents - Though they believe vaccine passport violate Canada's Charter of Rights and Freedoms, anti-vaxers will find this very difficult to prove in court, a lawyer with UBC's Peter A. Allard School of Law says. The key question in this debate is whether vaccine passports are mandated or an option. The key passage in the Charter is #7: “Everyone has the right to life, liberty and security of the person and the right not to be deprived thereof except in accordance with the principles of fundamental justice.” Salima Semnani, a lawyer, co-litigation director and lecturer with UBC, told CKTZ News, “there is no mandatory vaccine requirement.” She explained that British Columbians are given a choice. For example, people who have vaccine passports can eat inside restaurants and go to sports events. Those who refuse will have to be satisfied with take-out and watching sports on television. A recent Insights West market research poll found that 13 per cent of the British Columbians respondents are strongly opposed to a vaccine passport. This statistic was echoed in the Sept. 16 BC COVID-19 update, which states that 86.3 percent of the population were given their first dose of the vaccine and close to 79 per cent have received two doses. The vast majority of Cortes Island's adult population was vaccinated at Gorge Hall, or the Klahoose village, earlier this spring. Chart from the Insights West press release: The Vast Majority (79%), Of BC Residents Support The Idea Of Proof Of Double-Vaccinations In Order To Participate In Many Public Activities In BC, And Even More (over 8-in-10) Support Mandatory Vaccinations For Certain Professions. Photo courtesy of Insights West. Nancy Beach is one of the Cortes Island residents who opposes the passport's perceived violation of the Canadian constitution. She has written her MP, Rachel Blaney, her MLA, Michele Babchuk, and the local public health office. Beach was also one of the people who recently protested against the vaccine passport in Campbell River's Spirit Square. She cited Alberta-based Justice Centre for Constitutional Reform (JCCF) statements that the shots “are experimental” and clinical trials of the vaccine will not be complete until 2023. JCCF opposes the vaccine passports, arguing that the government should make the vaccines available to Canadians who want it, but their involvement should end there. JCCF did not respond to a CKTZ News request for an interview on Sept. 6, but two days latter issued a press release stating, “BC's vaccination requirement infringes Charter rights and freedoms. To be constitutional, vaccine passports must be ‘demonstrably justified' by the evidence.” Meanwhile the number of COVID cases within the Greater Campbell River Health Area has risen to levels not seen since the pandemic arrived in March 2020. Data from North Island Medical Health Officer Charmaine Enns' June 16, 2021, address to the City of Campbell River and the BC Centre for Disease Controls Epi-Week maps- Chart by Roy L Hales Semnani says there could be exceptional circumstances where someone could argue that their charter rights are being violated, for example when they cannot take the vaccine for medical reasons. She added that even then, it would still be very difficult to make the argument that is was an illegal violation of charter rights. “Section 1 says all of the rights and freedoms in the Charter are subject to reasonable limit as can be demonstratively justified in a free and democratic society,” explained Semnani. “So if we can say that the vaccine passport is reasonable, it's proportional due to the fact we have a global pandemic that is killing many, many, many people, then asking for a passport is a reasonable limit on people's rights.” Photo credit: Posters used against the vaccine passport in Campbell River, Sep 1, 2021 - Nancy Beach photo

Defender Radio: The Podcast for Wildlife Advocates and Animal Lovers

. It was a day of mixed emotions when we heard that the new NDP-led government in British Columbia would ban trophy hunting of grizzly bears – but still allow them to be killed for the quote meat. This pack out provision led to a big debate in the media, in comments, and on chatrooms across the province and country. It stood to reason that a good way to find out what people really thought about the hunting of grizzly bears was to ask them. Enter Insights West. Funded by LUSH Cosmetics and the Commercial Bear Viewing Association, Insights polled a sample of BC residents to get their opinions on grizzly bear hunting. Seventy-four per cent of residents support a ban on all hunting of grizzlies, which is a positive stat, though not surprising. What left me slack jawed was that 58% of self-identified hunters also support a ban on the hunting of all grizzlies. Immediately, this survey made headlines across the province and spurred even more debate. Throw in a mixture of all the fake news/inaccurate polling/lack of trust in media that has underscored the last 12 months, and the scientifically-valid survey got called into question. That’s why Defender Radio connected with Mario Canseco, the VP of Insights West. Mario discusses what the grizzly bear poll shows, why professional surveys are a valuable tool, and why advocates should be looking to the numbers.

As this episode airs, there are six days to go before British Columbia decides on the composition of their next Legislative Assembly. There is no shortage of reaction, insights, comparisons, polling, messaging appearing positive but mostly negative, and any other angle that may draw attention. And this is what the modern electoral cycle has become. Attention is the commodity that matters the most. Not issues. Not history. Not platforms. Electioneering is indeed an industry in the 21st century with an ever expanding multitude of ways for campaign money to be spent. It is fertile ground for research, demographic data collection, focus group messaging, But as this "science" evolves, so do the demands for accuracy relative to funds spent. There's the rub. EKOS Research Associates, Mainstreet Research, Forum Research, Ipsos, Insights West and many others are immersed in this always evolving industry. As things roll on, it's not just about selling their services to potential clients. It's about their own image, credibility and delivering value on their work. When the story about pollsters getting predictions wrong is as big as the actual results, you know we have entered a new era. When the BC Series kicked off on The View Up Here, it started by talking about corporate media's influence over smaller, independent sources that weren't reliant on advertising revenue or subservient to ownership pushing their preferred political viewpoints. This show has done its best to give those independents a venue hitting topics from a different perspective. We come full circle to look at how politics are now changed forever. Returning guests Grant G of the Powell River Pursuader and campaign/media/opinion veteran Bill Tieleman join once more, and Bob Mackin of The Breaker News guests to break it all down. #packyourshitChristy

It gets frustrating for us animal lovers – the apparent lack of change, the ongoing suffering. But the times, they really are a changing. This week we’re talking with two people involved in the process of change. First is Mario Canseco of Insights West, who conducted a poll on Canadian’s attitudes about fur and is an expert on consumer behaviour. Following Mario is Camille Labchuk, the animal rights attorney well-known by our supporters. In her work with Animal Justice, Camille has played an important role in the development and release of the Animal Charter of Rights & Freedoms.

Defender Radio: The Podcast for Wildlife Advocates and Animal Lovers

Talking about wildlife and animal welfare isn’t always enough; we have to do it effectively. Whether it’s working with the government, getting through to the media, or helping others get through the media spin, communicating effectively is paramount. In this week’s episode of Defender Radio, we’ve brought together a collection of experts to help us do just that. Mario Conseco of Insights West research shares the remarkable data from a recent poll of British Columbians that could help turn the tide of the government’s attitude about trapping. Professor Carrie Peckwood Freeman shares the lessons a career in communications has left her about the media, as well as her paper, ‘Giving Voice to the Voiceless.’ And IFAW’s seal hunt expert, Sheryl Fink, gives a brief history of the exploitative hunt, the importance of the recent WTO decision on the EU ban of seal products and how the media is being fed a government and industry spin on the story.
