The Vermont Conversation with David Goodman
Vermont's anti-Republican Republican congressional candidate Liam Madden

Liam Madden handily won the Republican primary for Vermont's lone U.S. House seat, defeating his two opponents by 8 points and 13 points respectively. He now faces Democrat Becca Balint in the November election. There's just one problem: Madden has renounced the Republican party. The Vermont Republican Party has returned the favor and renounced Madden as its candidate. “The state party would not commit any resources toward (Madden's) campaign due to his unwillingness to commit to caucusing with Republicans in Congress,” Vermont GOP Chair Paul Dame said.“I've been very upfront the entire election every single chance I get to speak to the public to say I'm an independent running in the Republican primary,” Madden told The Vermont Conversation. “The entire theme of my candidacy is to structurally, culturally and technologically create an alternative to the two party dominance of our political system, which I think is deeply dysfunctional. It's going to take a departure from this divisive, corrupt, oligarch-controlled and ultimately nonrepresentative and nonfunctional system.”Madden is a Marine Corps veteran who was a leader in Iraq Veterans Against the War. Since graduating from Northeastern University he has worked in the renewable energy field.Madden said that if elected, he will not caucus with either party. Asked how he would be effective in Congress, he said, “I would be courted quite strongly, I imagine, from both sides and I will give Vermonters an incredible amount of leverage.”Madden opposes many of the public health measures used to control the spread of covid, including mask mandates, vaccine requirements and lockdowns. “I would also question that these methods of protection that you claim are the gold standard are really as effective as this claim,” he said.Vermont currently limits abortion access. Madden said he is in favor of abortion rights but believes “it's reasonable to have the states make the decisions about what happens after 24 weeks.”Madden described his opponent, Vermont Senate President Pro Tempore Becca Balint, as “an incredibly intelligent and thoughtful, big hearted person. But she is also putting a kind face on a really broken system.”

You know the official story about the world that we're supposed to believe? You know ... that governments are always good and necessary, that politicians only do what they do because they love us so very much, that the police only exist to serve and protect you, and that every war the government has ever fought has been perfectly just and righteous? ADAM VS THE MAN brings you the reality THEY don't want you to know, hosted by libertarian activist Adam Kokesh. From Wikipedia: Adam Charles Kokesh (born February 1, 1982) is an American libertarian political activist, radio host, author and a U.S. 2020 Libertarian presidential candidate running on the single-issue platform of an "orderly dissolution of the federal government." Kokesh is a former U.S. Marine Corps Sergeant, and a combat veteran, having deployed to Fallujah, Iraq in 2004. Upon his return from Iraq, he became an anti-war activist and an advocate for Iraq Veterans Against the War. It was an honor to do this video interview with three of the nine members, seven male, and two female, of the Full Circle Everest team. They hope to make history as the first Black climbing team to attempt to summit Everest. As of late 2021, there have been 10,184 summits but only eight Black climbers have stood on the top. According to the Himalayan Database, South African Sibusiso Vilane became the first Black to summit on May 26, 2003, and returned in 2005 to summit from the Tibet side, both times with UK operator with Jagged Globe. American Sophia Danenberg became the first Black female to summit on May 19, 2006, with IMG. However, they were with standard commercial teams as there has never been an all-Black only team. The team is quite diverse with several members holding a Ph.D. One, Abby Dione, is an AMGA certified climber and runs a climbing gym. The leader, Phil Henderson is a longtime NOLS leader and attempted Everest in 2012 with Conrad Anker reaching Camp 3. Two are North Face-sponsored athletes, Frederick Campbell and Manoah Ainuu. Rosemary Saal is a NOLS instructor who led the first all-Black American team to the summit of Africa's Kilimanjaro in 2018. Demond “Dom” Mullins is is a combat veteran of the Iraq War, where he served as an Armor Crewman. After service Demond became a National Spokesman for Iraq Veterans Against the War (IVAW) and worked as a United States Senate staffer on veterans health and education issues. See the entire team at their site, I spoke today with Phil, Rosemary, and Dom about the expedition. We discussed their "why", who they are trying to reach and of course, all things Everest including their acclimatization and training efforts. The Full Circle Everest team is asking for financial help at their GoFundMe site. They've reached $21,368 of their $50,0000 goal as of this podcast, September 21, 2021. Any amount will help. I donated. You can follow their progress on their site at Full Circle Everest and on Instagram Climb On! Alan Memories are Everything

His photograph appeared in many national newspapers and resulted in dozens of TV interviews.  He was later to become the story himself when prosecuted unlawfully by the Marine Corps (while he was in the inactive reserves) for staging a street theater protest that included a mock combat patrol, "to bring a small piece of the reality of war home to Washington, DC." Season 2, Episode 43 - In Memory of Joshua Casteel (Dec. 1979-Aug. 2012) Tommy and I are honored to present this special episode in memory of the life of Joshua Casteel. Joshua was a classmate of ours at Washington High School in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. We're honored to have Joshua's mother, Kristi Casteel, join us on The Curiosity Hour Podcast to talk to us about her son's life. Joshua Casteel was a United States Army soldier, conscientious objector, writer, playwright, and divinity student. He was born in Sioux Falls, South Dakota and raised in Cedar Rapids, Iowa in a Christian Evangelical family to parents Rick and Kristi Casteel. While Joshua displayed early interest and skills in various arenas, including sports, music, theater, writing, and academics he chose to follow in the footsteps of his grandfather and father by attending West Point Military Academy. From his first experience with military life, questions began to surface as to whether he was ‘a fit' for military life and philosophy. After much deliberation, he realized he decided he needed to leave West Point. He enrolled at the University of Iowa and graduated with honors with a multidisciplinary major in Literature and the Arts with an emphasis in Philosophy. After 9-11, he felt he was constrained to fulfill his initial military commitment. He served with the Army's 202nd Defense Battalion as an interrogator at the Abu Ghraib Prison in Iraq, arriving six weeks after revelation of prisoner abuses by US personnel at the prison. After spending six months in Iraq and experiencing the realities of war and violence first hand, all the while struggling with the ethical and theological questions pertaining to his job and identity as a Christian soldier his military career finally came to an end. Years of study, counsel, prayer, and first hand experience ultimately led him to apply for conscientious objector. The Army approved his application and granted him an honorable discharge in 2005. Joshua went on to graduate from the University of Iowa in 2008 with a dual Master of Fine Arts Degree in playwriting and non-fiction writing. He was an active member of Iraq Veterans Against the War and the author of several plays performed in the US and abroad, including Returns and The Interrogation Room. His play will be performed as an opera in the UK in 2018. During the seven years between his return from Iraq and his death, he was featured writer for several magazines and a public speaker on religious and political matters around the world. He was featured in the documentary films Iraq For Sale: War Profiteers and Soldiers of Conscience. Excerpts of Casteel's emails from Iraq were published in Harper's Magazine and in book form by Essay Press, entitled Letters From Abu Ghraib. A second edition was published by Wipf and Stock Publishing in July, 2017. Prior to his death Joshua was at work on his memoir entitled, No Graven Image. He was attending the Divinity School at the University of Chicago at the time of his diagnosis. Before he died he was honored for his work towards justice and peace. Joshua died of lung cancer in New York City in New York Presbyterian Hospital on August 25, 2012. The Joshua Casteel Foundation was formed to carry on his legacy of nonviolence, working towards peace, justice and reconciliation in the world in ways that respect and honor the value of human life. Source: flickr It was the 1960s ” and throughout the United States, opposition to the War in Vietnam was growing. The Draft forced young men to make a choice about their own participation in the war. And many chose to resist. Over the course of the war, 2.6 million went to fight in Vietnam. More than 15 million were exempt or disqualified from military service. And over 200,000 officially defied the draft. Today, the US military is made up of those who enlist. What does it take ” in the absence of an official draft ” to build resistance to war and empire among the very people charged with fighting for it? Join host, Greg Carlwood, of The Higherside Chats podcast as he talks freedom, self-governance, and dissolving the State, with guest, Adam Kokesh. While we are all acutely aware of the uphill battle that must be fought in order to overcome the constant combat to our consciousness, many may differ on the best possible solutions to solve such a severe crisis. Yes, indeed there is a battle being waged throughout multiple fronts that appears hopelessly inescapable- from the systemic indoctrination through the school systems, to the wage slave scheme, it is painfully obvious that we are living in a broken system designed to indenture the masses- and while recognizing these oppressive inadequacies may be the first step on the road to recovery, what comes next is another thing. Today's guest, Adam Kokesh, has been a resolute figurehead of the Libertarian movement. As the author of "FREEDOM!", and host of the popular show "Adam Vs. The Man", Kokesh has been a passionate activist upon his return from the Iraq War. Today, Kokesh joins The Higherside to educate us on the violent role of the federal government and detail how he believes a society rooted in personal responsibility is the most viable option to restore freedom and circumvent oppression. 2:22 As an activist, author and champion of causes ranging from Iraq Veterans Against the War to gun rights, Kokesh has a rich and complex history of advocacy. Greg and Adam begin by walking through a few experiences that helped set him on a path to activism. Adam explains, his experience of Libertarianism began as far back as high school, slowly proliferated into a more philosophical perspective, and eventually expanded into an ethical examination of our society and political system. Kokesh also elaborates on how his military experience facilitated his disenfranchisement, the circumstances that lead to his 2010 Congressional campaign, and the inspiration behind his book "FREEDOM!". 9:42 Adam discusses how his activism landed him in jail. He begins by elaborating on the catalyst that put him on the radar, his Youtube video "Freedom Plaza", in which he loads a shotgun in close proximity to the White House. As a passionate proponent of gun rights, Kokesh articulates on how he believes matters such as gun control should be decided and what the future holds for technological advances in weaponry. 14:37 Greg and Adam debate the merits of gun rights and whether gun control should be deemed a violent policy, or if the very presence of weapons can be considered an act of aggression. 19:50 Despite understanding the elite's agenda to create a fearful and obedient society, using false flags and coordinated acts of terrorism being sold as random chaos, escaping the campaign of mass manipulation can be difficult. And, while we would love to believe it is only institutionalized acts of bloodshed that pose the real threat to public safety, stupidity is another factor that cannot be ignored. Adam examines not simply the tools of violence, but the prevalence of violence in society, and how it's foundation is rooted in the nefarious actions of governments worldwide. He also addresses critiques of this anti-government perspective and offers possible approaches to achieving this Libertarian utopia. 27:00 Kokesh clarifies the finer points on how we can ensure everyone evolves equally and there is a shift in paradigm even with the absence of an enforcement class. He also analyzes the ways in which agents of chaos and disruptors of the natural order can be managed in the absence of a central control mechanism. 30:00 While Adam contends that the real problem lies in government and the decentralization of power is the only viable solution, Greg questions if the nefarious acts attributed to government may in fact be the corrupt conduct of wealthy industrialists, corporate lobbyists, and corporate control in the governing process. 41:44 As a firm believer that all taxation is theft,

I've been reading a lot of articles that deserve some more mention. Not only is police brutality the classic oppressive instrument of the state, it is a fundamental look into how government agencies are set up to run. Take these news clips:-"Outside the debate, members of Iraq Veterans Against the War led a demonstration at the Hofstra University gates. At least fifteen people were arrested–including five IVAW members. Emily Forman of I-Witness Video captured footage of police on horseback attacking the crowd. Police horses trampled at least one veteran, Nick Morgan, who lay on the ground nearly unconscious in a pool of blood. Morgan served in Iraq for about a year. His condition is unknown."Taken from DemocracyNow! Thursday October 16th, 2008-"In Maryland, new details have been released on the state police spying on peace groups and anti-death penalty activists. In July, Maryland was forced to admit its agents infiltrated meetings and events of the Baltimore Pledge of Resistance and the Baltimore Coalition Against the Death Penalty. On Tuesday, Maryland’s top police chief admitted fifty-three nonviolent activists, as well as several protest groups, were classified as terrorists and entered onto a federal database that tracks terrorism suspects. Activists are now being invited to review their files before they are deleted."Taken from DemocracyNow! Wednesday October 8th, 2008-Today in one of my classes, there was an interesting question posed. "Think of how different your life would be, if at all, if you never had to fear violence of any kind?" This kind of police action is state violence directly against the people of this nation. Police all across the country have committed acts of violence and oppression against the working, working poor, and working/studying/activist youth of this country. Take a glimpse into what happened outside the last presidential debate:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KmQESpuiurIThis disrespect goes to our veterans...now think of what you may have experienced. Being pushed around, humiliated and taunted in the squad car, at the office, in the cell, chained up inside a courtroom with a leash around your neck. At other protests, tactics continue to include shooting rubber bullets and gasses into the crowds of men, women, and children. Since when was protesting illegal? This is direct state intervention and violence against what is arguably the most basic duty of people in a free society...demanding democracy in their streets. Demanding an end to an illegal war and occupation, which has devastated the people, enflamed a civil war, and condemned the region to billions of years of radiation from exploded depleted uranium shell casings. Oil supplies are not a good reason to invade a country...though, the members of the White House may not agree with me. You may have heard of Project for a New American Century...well, this is where you can find the neo-cons' logic and reasoning, as well as a hint that they might have let a certain disaster happen to get us behind some not-so-popular initiatives. I believe the quote from one of their publications read that they would need a "Pearl Harbor-like event" to get the people behind these plans. Lots of exploding, fire, massive destruction, many questions as to why it happened in the first place...if there's one disaster after Pearl Harbor that fits all these criteria, it's 9-11.Let me plainly state the obvious: The members of our government have used the pretext of a threat of terrorism to concentrate power into the hands of fewer and fewer people with less and less oversight. This is especially alarming considering the fact that U.S. troops are now being stationed for operations right here on U.S. soil. That's right:"In a barely noticed development, a US Army unit is now training for domestic operations under the control of US Army North, the Army service component of Northern Command. An initial news report in the Army Times newspaper last month noted that in addition to emergency response the force “may be called upon to help with civil unrest and crowd control.” The military has since claimed the force will not be used for civil unrest, but questions remain."Taken from DemocracyNow! Monday, October 13th, 2008Martial law is coming soon, and the police are the test run. The Army is next. Fight the power. Hit the streets. Show your numbers. Resist, refuse.

Steppin' Out of Babylon: Radio Interviews

Chanan Suarezdiaz is an Iraq War Veteran and an anti-war activist. He is the President of the Seattle, Washington Chapter of Iraq Veterans Against the War (IVAW). Suarezdiaz was a medic in Iraq from September 2004 until February 2005 when he got seriously wounded in the back by shrapnel. He spent many months in Ramadi, Iraq and recounts some of that experience in this interview. He calls it a "racist war of oppression". He also talks about the important organizing he's doing with Iraq Veterans Against the War both inside the military itself where anti-war sentiment is growing quickly all the time and among veterans. This interview occurred in Eugene, OR in the beginning of 2008 when he and David Solnit were touring and organizing for IVAW and the "counter-recruitment" movement just before the fifth anniversary of the invasion of Iraq where way over a million Iraqis have been killed as well as over 4000 Americans at that time. He reports that the US troops don't want to be in Iraq and Suarezdiaz cites some of the main issues of the vets besides that they don't like being an "occupying force". The troops are more and more often doing "search and avoid" missions for this reason. More and more squads and platoons are refusing orders and resisting. He emphasizes that they need a strong anti-war movement to back them up and big, huge demonstrations are very good. One out of four homeless people are vets both from the Vietnam War and this Iraq War-- and maybe more wars. He discusses the "back door draft" meaning that recruiters target and trick poor rural and urban folks since they have no other way to get money and they join because they need a job-- the reason that Suarezdiaz himself did. Ultimately many of the promises made by recruiters are never fulfilled and if people complain they are dismissed. The health care is nothing close to what is needed, especially regarding the mental health issues of post traumatic stress which is SO common. Suicide among vets and active duty military is VERY high. We discuss racism against the Iraqis and among the US troops. IVAW asks for 1) Immediate withdrawal of all occupying forces in Iraq, 2) Full VA benefits for all vets and abd 3) Reparations for Iraqis.YouTube - Chanan Suarez Diaz on GI Resistance to the war ...Chanan Suarez Diaz addressed a packed room on June 16, 2007 ...Watch video - 18 min - Rated 4.3 out of 5.0www.youtube.com/watch?v=uR_WPHrTDFI
