How can leaders use self-reflection as a development tool with others? Self-reflection is one of the most effective learning and development tools that a leader can use with themselves and their team members.Self-reflection can help everyone to learn from any mistakes that were made, flaws in systems that were uses, and to analyze actions that were taken. When guides and instructors use reflection with their guests, they create an opportunity to become aware of and to address problems. It also creates an opportunity to highlight learning opportunities and to ensure that everyone leaves with an accurate memory of events. In this episode of Delivering Adventure, Bill Mark joins Jordy and Chris to explore how leaders can use self-reflection with others.Bill Mark is a CSGA Certified Ski Guide and Guide Trainer. He has spent over Forty years in the ski industry working in ski patrol and as a guide. Bill's current role is the Assistant Director of Ski Operations and Senior Lead Heli-Ski Guide for Mike Wiegle's Heli-Skiing.Bill has extensive experience working with large teams of guides in high-risk environments where self-reflection is an essential tool for learning and development.Bill shares how leaders can use self-reflection with themselves and others effectively to improve sharing and leverage learning.Key TakeawaysUsing self-reflection as a leader effectively requires:Developing a Culture of Self-Reflection: Self-reflection is an essential component of developing a responsible risk-taking culture within teams. It is also one trait that can separate amateurs from true professionals. To leverage self-reflection, teams need to create a culture where self-reflection is encouraged and the time for it is set aside. This means scheduling it into the day and finding ways to make it a sustainable habit.Create Phycological Safety: Self-reflection only works if people are forthcoming and truthful with events, actions and thinking. To create an environment of open and honest communication, team members need to feel safe. To accomplish this, people should be rewarded for sharing mistakes instead of being punished or shamed. This is an essential component of creating psychological safety within the group.Look for Trends and Patterns: Humans are creatures of habit. When using self-reflection with others, leaders should be actively looking for unhealthy patterns or weakness in systems regardless of the outcomes. Correcting negative patterns, biases in decision making or poorly constructed or executed processes early, is an essential part of preventing future mishaps.Mentorship and Training (up for success): Leaders may need to train mentors and trainers how to use self-reflection effectively. It is a mistake to think that people in leader positions know how to use self-reflection effectively. Leaders may also have to train team members on how they can be mentored more effectively. This includes coaching them how to ask the right questions, how to learn from feedback and where to access mentorship.Guet BioBill started his career in the adventure industry working as a ski patroller in New Zealand before moving to Whistler for what was meant to be a season. Bill joined the Blackcomb Ski Patrol in 1987. He liked it so much he started doing back-to-back winters shuttling between the Whistler and working ski patrol in Cardrona in New Zealand, where he went on to become the ski patrol director. In 1991 he joined Mike Weigle's Heli Skiing as a ski guide. Bill is now the Assistant Director of Ski Operations and Senior Lead Heli-Ski Guide for Mike Wiegle's Heli-Skiing.Bill is CSGA L3 certified and has ISIA full certification (from NZ). He also instructs on CSGA courses and on CAA Industry Training Programs. When it comes to using self-reflection as a skill development

In this month's ARINS podcast, our host Rory Montgomery is joined by Anne Devlin, Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the ESRI, to unpuzzle the findings from the ISIA paper she co-authored with Seamus McGuinness, Adele Bergin and Emer Smyth: 'Education across the Island of Ireland: Examining Educational Outcomes, Earnings and Intergenerational Mobility' (https://muse.jhu.edu/article/884143). In this, our first episode exploring education north and south, Devlin explores how economic background impacts educational attainment and the way in which education in turn impacts the labour market north and south. In comparing levels of educational attainment, one measure, early school leaving for example, is known to have long-term ramifications for individuals shaping their labour market outcomes as well as their overall well-being. Other measures shaping education attainment include work status and the interaction between social background, measured by parental education and the impact on educational success or failure. Devlin and her colleagues explore why it is that in 2005 educational attainment north and south was broadly similar but by 2014 the mean wage gap was 27 percent in favour of Ireland, approximately 25 percent of this difference can be explained by lower levels of educational attainment in Northern Ireland. Anne Devlin is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the Economic Analysis Division having joined the ESRI in December 2020. Her research interests include labour economics and the economics of disability as well as a particular interest in economic inactivity in Ireland, north and south. She completed her PhD in Economics at Queen's University Belfast in June 2021. Her PhD research investigated the high levels of disability in Northern Ireland and whether there is a relationship with the ‘Troubles'. This is episode 22 of a podcast series that provides evidence-based research and analysis on the most significant questions of policy and public debate facing the island of Ireland, north and south. Host Rory Montgomery, MRIA, talks to authors of articles on topics such as cross border health co-operation; the need to regulate social media in referendums, education, cultural affairs and constitutional questions and the imperative for good data and the need to carry out impartial research. ARINS: Analysing and Researching Ireland North and South brings together experts to provide evidence-based research and analysis on the most significant questions of policy and public debate facing the island of Ireland, north and south. The project publishes, facilitates and disseminates research on the challenges and opportunities presented to the island in a post-Brexit context, with the intention of contributing to an informed public discourse. More information can be found at www.arinsproject.com. ARINS is a joint project of The Royal Irish Academy, an all-island body, and the Keough-Naughton Institute for Irish Studies at Notre Dame's Keough School of Global Affairs.

We've been ready to focus on our own future hometown, but had not even considered that maybe we weren't the only ones in our family who could take the plunge on a new home. Denise recently found a real estate agent to talk to us about Savannah. So we joined Isia Orr and her team at Fox Hollow Realty and got an education on everything that's happening in a city that's now on our Top 5 list. Isia gives us strategies for first-time buyers, the current state of the Savannah real estate market and post-pandemic buying and selling trends in cities across the country. The result? We took Isia's advice and our daughter is now scouring Corpus Christi for her first home. Our "new favorite real estate agent" will give you tips and hacks as she reveals the truth about just how attainable your first home can be. People waste so much money on rent and cars thinking they can't afford a house of their own--and couldn't be more wrong! In this episode, documentary and architecture photographer Filippo Romano joins podcast host Flora Loughridge to share his experiences capturing the devastating earthquake in Haiti for a photoreportage commissioned in 2010. He speaks of his ongoing interest in the relationship between architecture and communities, and the importance of trust when capturing the spirit and stories of people living in the Mathare ghetto in Nairobi, 2011. Filippo studied at ISIA in Urbino and specialised in photo documentary at the International Centre of Photography (ICP) in New York. His work explores cities, architecture and urban dwellers, and has featured in magazines, including Abitare, Dwell, Domus, Io Donna, Courrier International, Huffington Post, Newsweek and Skira. Filippo has travelled widely throughout his career, working in cities including Tokyo, Nairobi and Cairo. He also works on diverse projects closer to home, in Italy, and currently teaches at the Naba Design School in Milan and in the Photography Department at IUAV in Venice. @idealspaceswg @filipporomanophoto https://www.filipporomano.it/
We strongly advise you to listen to Jail Blazers (Part 1, 2 & 3) before moving forward to this episode. Eric, Zach and Craig consider this season to be "the eye of the hurricane" that really sets the table for the upcoming disasters. We break down the 2000-2001 Trail Blazer seasons and discuss all of the distractions within the organization that keeps building on to this "Jail Blazer" image. We discuss a lot of of news stories, specific games, locker room/player drama, and reference some incredible information from the book Jail Blazers written by Kerry Eggers (a fantastic read by the way!). We hope this episode provides a lot of laughs but we also hope this gives you an understanding of just how dysfunctional this team was from a players, coaches, management and fan base standpoint. Was this organization deserving of being known as the Jail Blazers or was this completely overblown by media and fans? Our goals is to lay out all of the information available and try to decide. ENJOY!
